Celtic Diary Wednesday May 18: Rodgers Turn To Be Favourite

Brendan rodgers spent a fair bit of time in the company of Dermot Desmond  yesterday, leading many experts to believe he’s going to take up the reins from Ronny Deila. Experts is maybe too strong a word in this context, but it does look like he’s a serious contender.

The word on the street is that Roy Keane will not make a commitment until after the euros, which leaves Desmond, who wants this sorted now, in a bit of a quandry.

Plus, where Keane is concerned, there’s only so many times you can ask him. Still, at least he’s quit before he got the job this time.

Or has he ?

Walking a bit further down the street and hearing whats being said you’d be inclined to think that Rodgers isn’t the favourite after all.

Maybe there’s more to it than that, and perhaps the rodgers chat is to make someone else think its now or never…

As it stands, Malky Mackay has also been spoken to, but I can’t fathom for the life of me what for.

If it is Rodgers, then good luck to him.

Image result for brendan rodgers jokes

If nothing else he will make Ronny look like a heavyweight when it comes to talking to the press. Rodgers has a habit of engaging the vocal chords before the brain realises they gone on ahead by themselves, as countless quotes testify, and Celtic need someone who can control the press, not become a target for ridicule.

I mentioned a book i read sometime back about football management in England, and Rodgers was one of those spoken to, and the example they used involved the manager sitting a young player down and explaining to him he would have x amount of pay cheques, which would allow him to take care of his family, friends and anything he wanted.

Thats not football management, thats financial planning. Its not really how I would go about the job. Deal with making the player first, as the money will follow anyway.

Sort of ties in with this quote from the Irishman;

“I started coaching for one reason and that was to make a difference for people, not just as footballers but as human beings.”

Forget that nonsense. Teach them how to pass, dribble, shoot and tackle.

There must be someone else out there….surely ?

Rodgers apparently wants the job, and is prepared, according to the Daily Record, to lose £10m to get it;

BRENDAN RODGERS will have to turn his back on a £10m fortune if he’s to accept the job of leading Celtic’s push for six-in-a-row.

The former Liverpool boss met with the Parkhead club’s majority shareholder Dermot Desmond in Ireland yesterday and was was immediately presented as the No.1 candidate to become Ronny Deila’s replacement.

But Record Sport understands Rodgers stands to pocket almost £5m a year over the next two years as per the terms of his severance deal at Anfield.

And that gardening leave jackpot will stop paying out from the moment he puts pen to paper on a contract with a new employer.

That means sugar daddy Desmond will have to dig deep to tempt Rodgers into accepting the job offer and turning his back on potentially more lucrative offers from other English Premiership clubs this summer.

The Record clearly doesn’t want to see rodgers at Celtic, and it continued with another reason why it’ll never happen..

The 43-year-old has already been linked with a possible switch to big spending Stoke City if current boss Mark Hughes, who is believed to be high on Everton’s managerial short list, is tempted away from the Potteries this summer.

“Understands” “been linked ”

All probably nonsense-and at Etims we know all about nonsense-but an indication of the agenda here.

Truth is, no-one knows if he’s been paid off, and no-one knows anything about the amounts . Heres why, as Barcabhoy added on twitter

Notice Rodgers is in talks, and if he’s in talks then he obviously wants the job, so that has to be positive, as he is a fairly big name down south. Not my own first choice, but then again. I don’t really have one. Unless its Guus Hiddink.

Anyway, Charlie Nicholas reckons theres other ways to make Brendan happy, apart from money.

“Brendan’s is a style of play I have always liked. It might work and might not, but it’s the principle. I’m very encouraged.

“The majority of the Celtic supporters that I speak with, Brendan seems to be edging towards the No.1 choice in their eyes.

“If they can get him and they are prepared to give him his head, it could become very exciting.”

Yes, i suppose it could.

Nicholas wouldn’t stop at that, and goes on to show he has a lot of man love for the unfortunately named Rodgers;

Charlie Nicholas: Getting in Brendan Rodgers would be the

best thing Celtic have done in a long time

Look, they’re bringing back the Carry On films and I fancy a change of career.

Whereas Joey Barton, who won’t be joining “rangers ” , for obvious reasons, he still gets a mention in the almost defunct paper;

Oh my God, they’re all at it.

Briefs for the Cup Final ?

Lets hope its a warm day.

Up in the top corner Martyn Waghorn, hailed as the natural successor to Gerd Muller, offers a few handy pointers as to how Joey Barton should behave if he joins up at Ibrox on a free transfer.

Bear in mind that free transfer will cost a signing on fee of around seven figures, money that simply isn’t available at Ibrox.

Still, got to keep the hordes happy…

speaking of spin, it might be worth mentioning that Charlie Taylor, of Leeds, another excellent left back, is also a target for the big clubs in England, but somehow the Scottish press didn’t see that as worth mentioning.

Lets concentrate on keeping our own lot happy, which leads us to Resolution 12, and a wee remonder from Auldheid what its all about….

If I can remind you all Res12 just asked UEFA to investigate on the overdue payable angle. There may be nothing to see or lots.

So don’t jump any guns. It could lead anywhere or nowhere.

What is important, however, is that we are about to go down that path…

On a similar note, the BBC have tried to explain their testicular vacuum with this pathetic reply, sent out to anyone who asked why they weren’t commenting on the Offshire Game report;

The BBC are presumably referring to a legal system which doesn’t affect the Offshore Game people, the Tax justice Network or anyone else who has had the balls to talk about it, as there appears to be a lack of lawyers letters, court cases or anything else that would suggest the BBC are telling the truth here.

These days, as it proved when there were protests outside downing Street, the BBC, chooses to ignore anything that might upset it’s pals, but has taken decisive action on a recipe website it ran.

It sure knows when to get tough. And why…

Celtics retail department have been a little concerned that a lack of big name signings is affecting shirt sales. There may be a solution with Charlton goalkeeper nick Pope reportedly on the radar..

No, not that one. A real radar.

Pope is apparently looking to move after the Addicks-not an Edinburgh rehab  side, but actually the nickname of Charlton- were relegated, and could be utilised as both a back up keeper and a cash cow if he gets the number 11 shirt….

Look, if they don’t want me to do the PR then I’ll take over marketing. We’d dwarf Real Madrid and Manchester United within a fortnight.

There are various other names touted around as possible incomings, but the lack of a manager kind of negates that, because as we know the manager has the final say on transfers.

laughter

I know, sometimes its all too obvious ….

You think you’ve an issue with ticket prices at Celtic Park ?

From Stokes evening paper….

SEASON ticket-holder Aimee Adams was delighted by Stoke City’s final day victory – but unhappy at having to pay £14 to take her new born baby to her first game.

The 25-year-old went with little Luna to the last match of the season after missing out on several games because she was heavily pregnant

But she was shocked to be told she would have to fork out £14 for her five-week-old daughter for ‘health and safety reasons’.

Mother-of-one Aimee, who is originally from Biddulph but now lives in Derbyshire, said: “I wanted to watch the last game but I didn’t want to leave Luna.

“I called the ticket office on the morning to check it would be okay to bring her. I was really surprised to be told I had to pay for a child’s ticket even though Luna doesn’t need her own seat.

We hear Hector has caught up with Richard Gough, and has been asking him some pretty searching questions… perhaps the big defender can help him with his enquiries…

morning Ralph, im quite surprised that you are against the appointment of BR but everyone is entitled to their opinion but i think he is a perfect fit for us and i really hope we get him.
no surprise the SMSM coming out with all the negative stories regarding this and you have to ask yourself why ? the answer is obviously they fear that he will be a huge success for us which i think he will be.
if it is to be Brendan well i hope we get the deal done by this weekend, why draw it out ? also it would be great to grab all the headlines on the eve of the cup final

Rodgers is the only name on the bookies list that ‘I’ believe is acceptable, but he would need to be nuts to walk out on £10m. If he does it, ‘I’ could see him taking us to ’10 IN A ROW’, so no pressure there then. HH

I believe that if the record said one thing then i would believe the polar opposite, meethinks that if the £10 million payoff then it would only relate to the EPL,that might explain his interest in the Cellic job.

It concerns me that we have spoken to Malky Mackay, are they taking the piss?
I would not welcome Mackay as manager, not in the slightest.
Celtic have known for a wee while now that Deila was going, we can’t lose any more time on this.
The squad and team need shaped and signings need to be made, a sense of urgency is required here!
Rodgers, Moves, Martin O’ Neill, Michael O’Neill, Keane and Lennon???
Whoever it is going to be, just get a move on Celtic!

Monti, it is not very often that i disagree with you,but on this i do.We must repeat must take our time with this appointment,we absolutely must get it right. We posters always think that our opinions are the correct ones but the Board are right to go through the proper procedures,it is for our complete benefit.Rodgers seem to tick all the boxes but i am not 100%convinced,lets just take our time after all the players are away for a much needed break just now and we have 2 weeks to get the correct decision.

This is a genuinely difficult one to call – we need to get a move on with the new man in post quickly to begin assessing and planning for the new season. The closer we get to that first CL qualifying game with no manger, the more difficult things will be. On the other hand rushing into an appointment could lead to the wrong decision – and we’ve been down that road before. I’ve heard it said that at best a good manager can only add about 10% improvement in performance to a good team, but that a poor manage can reduce a team’s performance by as much as 50%. So on balance perhaps a few more days will do no harm. If there is no news in a fortnight then I’ll start to get agitated.

Morto
Reply to  jrw

Based on your calculations we can look forward to a 60% improvement next season, woo hoo!
Signings wise I don’t think the timing of the manager’s appointment is that important, in previous years the real spending doesn’t happen until after the qualifiers and is dependant on how well we do.
As for shaping the team and rearing for these games, yep, sooner the better

Mike,we must get it right, for footballing reasons not who is available at a cheap price.
The latest statement is of course to stop other candidates thinking that the job is already taken.
The interview process has to be done in the correct manner.
Malky Mackay although not everyone’s cup of tea has done well on managing football teams.
He applied for the job,and deserves the respect of the board,at interview.
The club has to follow recruitment procedures,as with any other business.
The fact that Brendan got to meet Dermot,I think he is in poll position. I hope anyway.

Monti is dead right. But for me, I’m not easy with Keane. We need a manager who wants to be here, will stay and get us six in a row, then more. Sevco in the League will also increase MIB shenanigans next season and we need someone to stand up to their ‘honest mistakes.’ My choices in order: Martin O’Neill, Michael O’Neill, WGS, Rodgers, Lenny…any of these will do. Not Keane. NEVER Malky Mackay? Quick, my meds…

June 1st has been the date often used by clubs to announce a new manager. Wether that’s to do with contracts finishing at the end of May I don’t know, but I am assuming that this will be the case again.
If it’s Keane and ONeil or Rodgers etc then all good with me.
I would have liked Di Matteo but we all have our favourites.
But I. Think it will be 1st of June with the decision.
To be honest with all the players away now on holiday,or at the euros, then there really is no need to rush it.
As long as they are there for pre season then no problem.

I took my 10 month old to the turgid New Year’s Day game with thistle and was told I needed to buy a child’s ticket for him and he have his own seat. Even though he couldn’t sit up properly and would spend his entire time on my knee (vomiting as it turned out but I didn’t blame him for that, the game had us all gagging)
I was given the same response as Stoke provided: “health and safety”. Utter bollocks.

Rebus67

Earlier I opined(did you like that?) that the manager position was sorted some time ago, probably around January. I believe moves were made to bring an interim in but these failed. I also indicated that there was a reason that action was taken earlier to replace RD and that accounted for him staying in position until the end of the season.

David Moyes was appointed manager of Real Sociedad in Nov., 2014 on an eighteen month contract. He was let go in Nov 2015, with around six months of his contract remaining. This will expire this month. So hiring DM earlier than this month would have involved compensating him for the remainder of the RS contract, probably. Lawell’s comment that the manager’s position would be announced at the end of this month reinforces my belief that a compensation issue is stalling the announcement of our new manager……Moyes or someone else.

Jimmybee,

BR had an excellent record at Liverpool. He recorded 1.77 points per game. Moyes also had a credible record st MU with 1.73 points per game. At Everton he averaged 1.53 points per game and was hired by MU on the strength of that. I think BR may vary his tactics more than Moyes which can be either an advantage or the reverse. I see thst Alex Neil was criticised for varying his formations too much. He may be a dark horse for our job.

What struck me about BR is his values…..leaving the proceeds of the sale of the family home to a hospice; climbing Kilimanjaro to raise funds for cancer research etc….defines a very principled man. I wonder if any of that would matter if results do not go his way!!

Great what a day off can do. I have had two of those “busy” days again. No it wasn’t a slip on the keys. I did mean BUSY and not as you think, DIZZY. So, I am catching up and have thoroughly enjoyed both Dairies since you had an overdose of 7ups.

I have to say, even Ronny’s departure cannot dampen the enthusiasm of some for a slagging match or a farewell condemnation. Probably when that finally runs out of steam it will be time for the new manager to be bombarded with abuse. I suppose that is part and parcel of supporting a football team. It used to be the terracing talk. The only time there was any let-up then was when the crowd was so big it was nay impossible to look at the fan next to you never mind speak to him. But, I suppose there will not be many on here who remember those days of lost bunnets, portable Tennent’s loos and soaking trouser legs.

As for the new manager, I await any announcement with baited breath and real trepidation as I see no name as yet that truly inspires me. All these big budget guys that are being mentioned will be lost working on a shoe string. You do not win trophies in the EPL. You buy them and that goes for Leicester too even though on a smaller scale than the top boys. We are in a catch twenty-two situation as long as we are competing in a league that is a beleaguered beggar in the streets of football. The horizon of change seems to be on a galaxy far, far away at the moment. So, for all it is worth, my advice is either lower expectations, especially in Europe, or powder your flintlocks for another year of managerial firing squads.

Mike, remember it wasn’t in Dundee 

AH Pensionerbhoy, well i never, the voice of sanity in a den of iniquity,we as fitba sensis and uneducated pundits (who is?).
Look to you for guidance and common sense and once again you deliver. We feel lost, who can we moan at,our usual target has departed to resume his skiing and fishing career never to be heard of again.Who is our new target,to whom can we aim our ire at?Well it has to be the Board, always a safe bet to confuse us and to foul up somehow, they will have to do until once again they give us a gift of another incompetent Manager.
Well how else can we spend our time?especially when insomnia beckons.Great to hear from you P.B.hope you are keeping well and remember,in Ronny we trust.HA.HA.HA.

Caption,Ronny and Jonny pack there bags and make there way to the circus, off they went with a clumpity, clump.

Ayrcelt, i agree with you, that we might need a strong character as Manager, one or two are now mentioning Peter Houston the Bairns Manager and John Hughes the ICT Manager.
My gut instinct remains that D.D.will want MON as the fitba Directer and Roy Keane as Manager, but who knows, but i would be happy with them,B.R. i am not to sure about, but at least it seems that D.D. is making the call.

call me a cynic ( you’re a cynic )but ah get the impression Rodgers is being touted big time in the MSM, and most Celtic fans ( masel included ) appear to want him, therefore if its no Rodgers for the managers job it will be seen as ‘another’ indication we huv nae ambition.

Also whuts aw this ‘we must get it right this time’…like that’s no batently obvious every time we need a new manager.

Anyhoo…make of aw that whut yi will.

HAIL HAIL N aw that! ( ah know, m

Bondi, how times have changed, once we had a relatively level playing field now we are situated tied to another country,a country of milk and honey.Where they earn £150 million pounds for winning there league and we poor sods are lucky to get close to a million pounds. Here now it is a question of survival a land of not much ambition cos ambition costs and we do not have the gelt.So we must do the best we can with the limited funds available and that means trying harder and by appointing a manager who is better than one who was clearly not experienced to cope.

H know Mike, galls me ti read Seville took only 7,000 fans ti the Europa final last nightl, they apparently handed back 2,000 ticket fae their allotted 9,000.Pal, ah would huv flown fae Sydney for that gemm if the Tic were in it.

If the managers wage is an issue then really how much dae they want ti bank? If the players budget is an issue that ah can understand. But ah think Celtic should make a serious dent in their ‘bottom line’ to see how we go. Its really aw aboot Europe me thinks.

Pal, ah would huv flown fae Sydney for that gemm if the Tic were in it.

MON THE HOOPS !

Telt yi ah would huv flown fae…repeat after me.

Anyhoo… HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION TIME:

Would you forfeit 10 IAR for a Europa ( lets be realistic, it’ll no be the Champions league ) final ? Me? dunno TBH.

Both would be nice.
If I had to choose…

I would not concede the 10 IAR.
We have been European champions (above and beyond the secondary trophy), and we got 9 without any dodgy EBT tax nonsense – unlike a certain historical team. To get the 10 would be monumental and an achievement that generations can look back on with more pride I would suggest; as year after year success is always more difficult than one good year.

Is anyone finding the site a bit laggy today?
Don’t know whether it’s my windows playing up or the amount of ads/gifs/pics on this page?
