Celtic Diary Tuesday May 17: I Have Seen The Future

Apologies for the non-appearance of the diary yesterday, by the time I returned to some sort of capability it would have been time to do todays.

Thanks to the Preston Emerald for taking us up to the game, and what a great day it was.

I miss the big buses to the game, full of song , laughter and, er, the occasional refreshment, and its good to see a club doing okay with the right mix of youngsters , oldies and loonies. Well, to be fair, the loonies were on loan from Stoke.

Anyone in the Preston area should get in touch with them. You won’t regret it.

And then there was the football, a return to the days of playing the Celtic way, the predicted 7-0, and all done with the youngsters.

A glimpse of what might have been, or what might still be ?

Time will tell, but whoever the new manager is, he’s got quite a squad to work with.

Right, that you feeling good ?

Shall we keep it that way, or shall we have a look at the papers ?

Keiran tierney says he “one hundred per cent ” wants to sign the new improved five year deal thats on the table, but the SMSM can’t have that…

Arsenal set to stun Liverpool with £10m deal after chief scout sends back glowing reports

Thats from the Daily Star, makin its first appearance in the diary lest people think I’m just picking on the same papers, and the same reporters all the time. The story has appeared everywhere else, lending credence to the theory that the Scottish hacks simply share the nonsense so that no-one misses out when they finally do get something right.

The reports suggest that Arsenal have watched Tierney, have decided he’s worth it, and are about to put in a bid.

Other reports suggest he’s happy where he is, and if he says he’s happy , then thats good enough for me.

On the manager front, a little bit of tittle tattle from the stands hint that Peter houstion, who has done very well with Falkirk, could be next seasons John Collins, brought in in case Roy Keane throws a fit and storms out, therefore giving us a ready made replacement.

The flaw with that, of course, is that Keane would want to pick his own man, and has already claimed that was the very reason he turned the job down two years ago.

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon has spoken about the possibility of Keane arriving in to the hot seat, which is in itself interesting, as no one else has spoken about anyone else. Gordon reminisced about the first day of training with sunderland, when he left Hearts.

I did have a good day in my first training session.

“When you go to a new club you want to put on a good show, particularly on your first day, so I was right up for training.

“I’d been injured with a broken ankle for a few months before he left and hadn’t been playing.

“He was trying to bring me back and I played in his last game before he left but injured the ankle in the same game, so it wasn’t a great day for either of us.

“I’m sure if he was offered the challenge of leading the club, he’d accept it. He’s hard-but-fair and did a great job to keep Sunderland in the Premier League in that first season after winning promotion.

“He commands respect from everybody for what he’s done as a player and as a manager.

In Keane’s book, he mentions the incident, claiming the whole squad applaueded a top class performance from Gordon….

“Brendan Rodgers, David Moyes, Keane, any of those guys are massive names. Regardless of who comes in, they’re going to bring in good experience.” added the keeper, remembering he wasn’t supposed to give too much away.

So, the season is done, Ronny and Johnny are away, and the players can all head off for a wee break before coming back in a few weeks to start all over again. The Diary got the 7-0 right, and we also mentioned that the club is going to Slovenia for pre season training, which i don;t think has been announced yet, but it will be soon.

Something else we are right about is the impending statement on Resolution 12, which is due any day now as only the final wording has to be adjusted.

Should be an interesting summer.

The media blackout on the Tax Justice Network report has been explained to some degree at least, by Channel 4’s Alex Thomson, who said the as much of the report is based on Charlotte Fakes evidence, then it’s “legally toxic “, although it does beg the question as to why TJN isn’t in any bother.

Only Graham Spiers has mentioned it in his Times column, and he deserves praise for that. State funded broadcaster BBC Scotland won’t go near it, and this is repeated throughout the written and spoken media.

One wonders, however, if it had been another club at the centre of the allegations, if this would still have been the case.

If the media won’t touch it, and the SFA won’t comment, then it has to be taken to Holyrood. Ask your MSP to ask questions in the house.

Then theres the sponsors. Are Ladbrokes and William Hill happy to be associated with the whiff of corruption. ? Ask them .

The TV companies, Sky, BT Sport and all the others ? Are they happy to plough money into a rigged game ? Ask them.

Surely someone at Sky , with their own news channel, must want answers. Or at the veryuleat, they must want to ask questions. Again, ask them.

Regan, Doncaster and all the others tainted by this must be forced to comment. Their silence adds fuel to the rumours, and it isn’t doing the image of the game any good.

If they are still in place at the start of next season, then the games a bogey, and quite a few will give up on it.

Theres talk that the mighty “rangers ” will be ready to make their mark on the Premiership this year, and the papers are happily repeating whatever good news story they can find, no matter its credibility, to help shift season books.

Joey Barton, curently out of contract with Burnley-for a few days anyway-has been widely tipped to lead the side to glory..

So has Niko Kranjcar…

Lets just say theres more chance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming to Celtic.

Barton has a two year dela ready to sign at Burnley, and Kranjcar won’t leave his gig in the USA.

Of course, all of these stories may have something to them, but a quick look at the Company check website-something everyone should do when considering a purchase from any company involving anything more than a thousand pounds, tells its own story..

Loved the way we played on Sunday, the Celtic support showed its true class in the farewell for Ronny , especially the Green Brigade. The boos were reserved, deservedly, for Doncaster. The nonsense from the Death Starcand it’s media outlets is hilarious, a summer of fun and a good start to the Champions League “Here we go…

More pish from the daily rangers today , they are being talked up for preparing to go for barton and dorans even though they have no hope of getting either, and arsenal ready to buy tierney for ten million apparently. This is no more than an attempt by level 5 and co to make rangers look like a bigger team buying from england while we are “supposedly” selling to england. Scottish journalism at its best, the record should be band from celtic park!. No wonder we dont buy this rag

well, it really was a great game on Sunday and it just shows you how much talent we have with our young players. its a shame Ronny didnt have the faith in them throughout this season, i think that shows you that the pressure was too much for Ronny and in the end he was too scared to lose which meant he was too scared to play the kids and that is a shame.
what Sunday showed us was that we do have a pretty good squad of young talented players…..sign 4 quality experienced players and i think we will be good for the CL qualifiers.
just have to wait now for the new manager to come in and get things started, im hoping its Rodgers but but feeling is that it will be Keane, but who ever it is i will be behind them 100%…

You have hit the nail on the head Ewan though it is hardly suprising that Deilas mindset changed after the reactions of dropping points 2 games in a row get’s here and elsewhere?
Real end of the world stuff at times.
Here’s hoping the next guy has skin thick enough to both ignore it and carry on with his plans.
Obviously there will be certain rules he will have to abide by..

Firstly the good news,
The res 12 bhoys are almost ready to go,they along with we hope the Board, who will issue a statement,i assume at the same time or before it goes to the Guardian for publication a week tomorrow.
The bad news,is anything spun by the bigoted gutter press and our beloved National broadcaster, who are as far removed from reality as our silly polititions.with the emphesis on the tit bit.
I am excited to hear who our new Management team will be and who they will bring in to supplement the team,it really angers me to think about the millions wasted on duff,or fragile players, they need to be physically strong as well as mentally strong,so come on the tic and bring in some real fitba management and players.

Morning Ralph,
One of the things that greatly impressed me on Sunday was we didn’t take the foot off the gas.
I thought Stuart Armstrong in particular showed in his performance, the main reasons why we bought him, pace, skill, direct and a wonderfully taken goal.
The nucleus of a very healthy squad is in place but we need to be keeping Rogic and Tierney, I also think James Forrest has a big part to play still.
What we need now is real quality brought into the side, difference makers in key areas.
We must start in defence and make a big signing at the back, a leader and a presence about him.
We don’t need wholesale changes but as I have said previously we need high quality players, preferably with CL experience.
Some will disagree with me and others will agree, but Celtic SHOULD be in the CL group stages every season, the team on the park must have the quality to make this happen.
It needs to happen ( qualification) this year, because as of the year after we will be unseeded in the draw.
So let’s get a class manager in and a few big signings and bring the thunder back.

Agree – that was one of the real positives on Sunday: the team kept going and didn’t let up, well maybe apart from the last few minutes. One of the problems through the season was that Celtic could play about 30 minutes of decent flowing football in many games, but they couldn’t maintain it; and nor was there any guaranmtee as to when this purple patch might appear (and of course some times it didn’t). And we most certainly have the
nucleus of a very healthy squad and we need to be keep Rogic and Tierney. And someone to play along sde big Eric – he is also starting to look the part.

I’ve liked the idea of Brendan Rodgers. His background will give him some insight into what this club is all about—and isn’t. A few questions for ewanbhoy and others:
Does he prefer certain formations: 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, etc.
Will he give our youngsters a chance?
Can he inspire players?
Good man manager?
Aware of our financial ‘limitations’?
Who will he have on his management team?
What experience of Europe does he have? Any success there?
Brendan, here is our best 11.
Gordon
Lustig/Sviatchenko/Simunovic/Tierney
Armstrong/McGregor
Roberts/Rogic/Christie
Griffiths
Allan and Henderson to play a part. Maybe Forrest.
Goodbye to: Ciftci/Scepovic/Cole/Kazim and a few others. Trim the squad. Bring in a few. Get us into the Champions League please. Win us 6 in a row!

I think Mikael’s best days are gone but apart from that a good team with a bit of pace. Our captain is another whose best days are behind him and his passing and general play leave a lot to be desired recently, would like to see him remain at the club though in a coaching capacity. Nir slows the game down too much for me, I would like Stuart to be given a central berth, most of his best work on Sunday was through the middle and think he is wasted out wide.

ewanbhoy

Reply to  Devoy45

Devoy thats a good team selection and it shows how much talent we have, we just need the right man in to take charge of them and that man for me should be Brendan Rodgers.
As to your questions, well his favored formation is 4-3-3 but he can mix it up a bit too, he will definitely give our youth a chance as he will be well informed about our budget and strategy. he has great man management skills too which will be great for our young players.
his experience in Europe is nothing great but he did manage Liverpool for 2 season in Europe, 1 in the CL where they finished 3rd and then got knocked out of the Europa league in the next round, his other season again he got to the last 32 of the Europa…but this is valuable experience no the less which he can take forward with us hopefully….if he does get the job

Reply to  Devoy45

I Disagree Devoy I think Shifty could be an excellent understudy for Rogic. That’s one of the many things Ronny didn’t get, Rogic was using his strength and ball control to hold up the ball, when he played others in that role this season things didn’t work.

It was a very good performance on Sunday, but remember it was an end of season meaningless game, nothing was at stake.
I think that Brendon Rodgers would be most supporters first choice,we will have to wait and see, also we will still need to bring in a new spine of the team, centre back, defensive mid. and a new striker, first team players, anything less would IMHO leave us unlikely to qualify for the C.L Qualifiers.
So come on Celtic push Res,12 and bring in good strong physically and mentally sound players.
Germany is my choice.

Mike, like you say a typical end of season game for us,remember we humped Inverness 5-0 the season before.
It’s the games that mattered that let Ronnie down.
He couldn’t win them simple as.
Failures in Europe, the cups, but especially against them, will always be in my thoughts when I think of Ronnie.
A manager gas to come in now, before the euros,he gas to get everything into place for the friendliest coming up and potential signings.
A strong defensive midfielder, maybe the young lad from Norway will be that,I don’t know, but we badly need one.
My thoughts on a starting 11 with the players we have currently, would be. 3 5 2
Gordon
Eric Jose Mulgrew
Lustig right wing back Tierney left wing back
Armstrong Rogic Johansen
Griffiths Stokes.
Subs goalie Boyata Janko ,Christie Mackay Stevens Commons. Roberts.
You will notice the absence of Brown Bitton too me they were the cause of Celtics failure, unable to tackle, sideway passes, wayward passes, and too many times gave the ball away cheaply.
Let’s hope a new dynamic centre midfield player, and a striker to get us through the qualifiers.

Was at the Brighton match last night, with the hoops on of course, great stadium really enjoyed the match.
Good to see Hooper Wallace Kayal Loovens all playing.
Brighton fans can’t believe Celtic let him go and for less than 400k they say he has been brilliant all season.
Hooper I think would still do a great job for us,why don’t we go back and get him,if they don’t get into the premiership.

I believe brown could do the enforcer of midfield role , provided he gets himself fit and stops playing through injuries. The rest of the midfield should be the younger players . Agree with des we signed a four million defender who looked the part and could be a great partner for eric with his pace. Have high hopes for christie , looks like hes built himself up and has skill and pace. Told you so to the people that wrote off armstrong , he showed on sunday what he can do, bring on sevcos old bosman reject team , will be old men against bhoys!

Browns finished m8 hasn’t got it anymore, time for some new blood in there. Armstrong and Johansen playing in their normal roles the difference to being stuck out wide too often.

I don’t agree jimmy , even Delia said he’s the fittest guy at the club. He’s said he was playing through injuries so rested up and injury free he will be backj next season in a more defensive role I reckon

Apart from immense pride and delight what I took from Sunday was how Armstrong Johannsen etc played without the influence of Brown, and Bitton. We were much more fluid, moved the ball about quicker, we had more of a goal threat going forward and that’s without a recognised striker , the full backs seemed to play further up etc. Granted some Murderwell players were already on the beach but never the less I thought that with Brown and Bitton missing it transformed the team mentality. The shape of things to come with summer bids for Bitton and strong rumours of Browns injuries taking there toll and him starting his coaching badges……

The Bitton of the last few months, definitely happy to see go. The guy who looked composed and assured, including in the San Siro last season, I want him back and in the hoops for years to come.
Big fan of his, I’m hoping it’s a man-management issue with him and the new guy can extract every ounce of the good player that is definitely there.
The second half of last season he was the key to all that was good about our play, alongside the freshness brought in by Zig and Zag. Bitton In !!! (so long as he takes a good look at himself this summer)

Me also Del,i would sell him also along with Johanson, keep Broony we need his dig and his experience and defo. bring in a new tough tackeling Def.Mid.Keep Rogic and Christie.Allan for me is too light weight, punt also.

mike Broonies dig is a myth he only ever wins the ball from side or back,it never ceases to amaze me how players like Broonie make it through the ranks nevermind punters giving him legendary status,he is of limited ability can,t shoot/score no vision or passing ability,Lubo was a legend ffs.

John is there any Cellic player you like apart from Lubo who i also believe was different class. My thoughts was on a new big tough tackelling Defensive mid,a ball winner, with a bit of pace. The size of Efe but with a footballing brain.

Evening bhoys,
been away for a while, back now so some thoughts if I may,
Sunday was good but lets not get carried away end of season fare but some good exciting players for next year , young Christie 10 out of 10 superb.

Thought Ronnie was composed yet emotional at the same time, thanks for your hard work but you will not be missed, sadly.

Time now for lawwell to earn his million pound a year salary and deliver the new manager in a time frame that allows whoever it is to accomplish something before the CL qualifiers, please let it be Rodgers

Time for RES 12 to come to the fore celtic and other football clubs must start the battle as the gutless, spineless cunts at the SMSM will hide again as they have done for years not wanting to upset the hunnish hordes
the clowns that run our game, the guilty will want this to go away, lawwell do your job

Brighter times my friends to come

cheers

Have got to say Lustig’s best performance for ages, bombed forward in support of Roberts all day. Armstrong was good and Johanson was very good. The football you can play when Lasley isn’t booting feck out of you ! Nice touch from him with Jay at the end and an excellent send off (his banner from the GB was passed around the ground) Think he was crying after he went to them. It wasn’t fast paced but we hunted it down all the time and it was relentless.
Of course we need to get it right but you know what…it doesn’t really matter who is the manager, we will still always go because it is part of us…it is who we are.

Pretty excited at the thought of Rodgers only fear is that he has a similar philosophy as Mowbray re expansive football a bit cavalier our past successes have been when more defensive minded guys like o Neil and Strachan were at the helm. Let’s hope he is across both sides

Anyone worried about Brendan Rodgers, please leave the room now. The guy is perfect for Celtic.
An attacking philosophy, we will be a joy to watch.
So what if we lose the odd game 4-3 bring it on.
Brendan on Tommy Burns
“My dear old friend Tommy Burns, the Celtic legend who passed away earlier this year, once told me that when the curtains go back and the spotlight is shining on you, nothing can prepare you for that.”

After quitting Watford for Reading, Rodgers found himself out of football before a stint at Swansea that sent his stock soaring thanks to promotion to the Premier League and an impressive first season in the top flight.

After hosting Celtic for a pre-season friendly in 2011 he said: “Celtic were my boyhood club, with the likes of Danny McGrain and Tommy.

“Tommy was a hero, a great man and a friend of mine. He was a special man and saw something in me early on. I’ve been lucky to work with some of the world’s top bosses but I got a lot of human qualities from Tommy.

“He had time for everyone and made me see you can be a good guy and a good coach. We’d talk for hours. When I was at Chelsea I’d visit him.

“I last saw him in August 2007. He took ill the next February and before I knew it he’d died, God bless him.

“At his funeral you saw the respect he had from all sides. He was a wonderful football guy but an even better person. Tommy twists, Tommy turns, Tommy Burns.”
He gave the house sale of his beloved parents home to the hospice, a manager who has in him all we would want.
He is the right man no ifs no buts Just get it done Dermot.

… “our past successes have been when more defensive minded guys like o Neil and Strachan were at the helm..” – – Really? The most successful team in our history was founded on exciting, attacking football (but with a solid core) and – if my ancestors are to be believed – that tradition dates even further back.

Sure, the modern game is different and every team needs a reliable, solid defence to succeed, but it’s all about finding the right balance .As Johan Cruijff once said “In my teams, the goalie is the first attacker, and the striker the first defender”, but IMHO there’s also still some truth in that old adage the best form of defence is attack.

I meant recent successes. Steins days where when the game wasn’t ruined by money and when we weren’t a feeder club for a provincial entities like Southampton. Conservative approaches to teams filled with better players if we are lucky to get that far in Europe is a must sure Rodgers knows this Mowbray was a fruitcake

Fair enough lancelt67. I knew you meant more recent successes and you’re spot on about us beeing a feeder club for 2nd tier EPL clubs (at best). In the absence of any definite news about the new boss, I felt like having a wee, old fashioned rant about the Celtic’s glorious attack minded legacy

Brendan Rodgers donates sale of parents’ home to NI Hospice
Brendan Rodgers has donated the sale of his parents home in Carnlough to the NI Hospice. Picture by Hugh Russell
BRENDAN Rodgers has told how donating the sale of his late parents’ home to the Northern Ireland Hospice is a way of honouring his mother’s dedication to charity work.

The former Liverpool manager also said he wanted to support the hospice after the care provided to his father Malachy before his death from cancer.

His donation of almost £100,000 will be used for a nurse call system at the new £13m adult hospice nearing completion built on Belfast’s Somerton Road.

Rodgers, who was last month unveiled as an ambassador for the NI Hospice and Children’s Hospice, bought the house for his parents in the Glenbrook area of Carnlough after they decided to downsize from the family home in the Co Antrim village.

In 2010 his mother Christina died after suffering a heart attack, aged just 53.

A year later, his 59-year-old father Malachy passed away following a battle with throat cancer.

Rodgers said he had now found a way of continuing his mother’s legacy of charity work by donating the sale of the house to NI Hospice.

“My mother was a big charity worker, she did a lot for Trócaire,” he told The Irish News.

“I just felt it was an opportunity to do something in my mum’s memory, especially because she was such a big charity worker. She spent her life trying to help others, trying to raise money to help others.

“It’s something for the hospice, it felt like the right thing to do, it was about putting the money to good use and I know that it will be in the hospice.

“I know that she would have been happy that I have done this.”

Rodgers also described how his father received hospice care during his battle with throat cancer and he was delighted his donation would be put to good use by the charity.

“Dad was treated in Antrim hospice when he was in the incurable stages of the disease,” he said.

“It’s always something that has stuck with me, how much the people who work at the hospice put into caring for people. I’ve said it before, they’re like angels, and they really are.

“One hundred per cent of the sale of the house goes to the hospice and to see that it’s going to the call system is great. When it’s something tangible that you can see, then it feels all the more worthwhile.”

Siofra Healy from the NI Hospice said it was an “amazing gesture”.

“Naturally we were overwhelmed at such a generous donation and also the generosity which Brendan and his family were offering to us in terms of their time and support,” she said.

“Brendan has said before that he admired the work and professionalism of hospice nurses, and so it is fitting that his donation will fund a state-of-the-art nurse call system in our new adult hospice in Belfast – a system that will help us make great advancements in delivering the highest quality palliative care to patients during the most difficult time in their lives.

“We are just a matter of weeks away from opening the new hospice and at a crucial stage raising funds for the of fitting-out of 18 private patient bedrooms – the support from people like Brendan, businesses, organisations and community has been amazing thus far.

“Without this generosity, we would not be able to maintain the highest standard of hospice care that people in Northern Ireland deserve.”

Barcelona forward Luis Suarez once again credited Liverpool and their manager Brendan Rodgers for his development as a player, according to a recent interview.

“Your game changes all the time. If you are not learning every day in training, you are going backwards as a player,” Suarez told Squawka. “Liverpool developed me and I did well in the Premier League, scoring hat-tricks or getting winners, and that gives you the confidence to think you can be a game-changer when you go out on the pitch.”

Suarez, 28, has become a key player for Barca since his €80 million arrival from Liverpool last summer, forming an all-South American attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar which has contributed a combined 117 goals this season.

“At Barcelona it is the same. We have forwards who can impose themselves on games, and that is how I need to be,” he said. “While we’ve also got some of the best midfielders who have ever lived. It is an absolute dream for any forward.

“Their game is about playing the right ball at the right time, and my game is all about capitalising on that, so you could not ask for better. I am in my element playing with them.

“On the training ground and during matches, you need to show that you can blend in. So yes, it is back to zero again. It is exciting but of course you are nervous.”

Suarez is currently battling a hamstring issue and not played since being substituted at halftime during the Champions League semifinal second leg at Bayern Munich on May 12. He remains a fitness worry ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

The Uruguayan told the website that his former Liverpool manager was key to his development following his £22.7 million move from Ajax in 2011.

“When Brendan was appointed, I was excited. I’d actually spoken to him when he was at Swansea in Spanish, which I thought was a good touch,” Suarez said. “He was familiar with the Spanish way of playing, as he’d studied there.

“He was very clever and told me that Liverpool would play possession football, as it would suit me. He helped me with my runs, arriving in the area at the right time and coming in from wide — rather than just waiting in the middle — which benefited my confidence.

“We worked hard on finding ways I could isolate players and then try to beat them, man on man. That was the only way I could succeed in England. […] If you punt a long ball up towards me and one of these [Premier League] defenders, I am not going to win it.

“But the way Liverpool played, with the ball on the floor, and being released very fast to my feet, gave me a chance against the big guys. […] I wasn’t proven and I had to adapt to the Premier League, which Brendan knew. He knows all about English football and he educated me to become successful.”

Of course Brendan has had is pitfalls too, as I’m sure many will look into in Scotlands media. His divorce, players who fell out with him etc etc. Will get plenty of pages.
But what we will get is a dedicated professional, who will play attractive football, encourage better players to come, and use all his experience to move us forward.
If Dermot wants him it will be done.
