On this day in 1840, a man was born in Sligo who went on to leave a permanent monument to helping the poor. Regular reader and contributor Monti suggests another fitting memorial, one that perhaps is needed more now than ever before..
We Celtic supporters are all aware of the reasons why Celtic were formed, from poverty, homelessness, penniless and destitution, Celtic were created to help the poorest people in their community, to feed people, to clothe people and to give their community and people hope in a hopeless situation.
Something to focus on, and somewhere to turn to in times of need.
Thousands of people living in squalor and impoverished environment and living conditions were now, due to Celtic being born, starting to get the help they desperately needed to have some kind of structure to their lives.
But the problem hasn’t gone away.
Poverty and homelessness are still rife in 2016, we still see people living and begging on our streets in Glasgow and most towns and cities across Scotland.
Foodbanks exist, charity shops dominate high streets, and austerity has become a domestic issue.
I would like to see Celtic F.C. build a permanent building for the people of Glasgow’s poorest and homeless citizens,
I would like to see them oversee recrutiment and training so that those involved are the right kind of people to help those who have fallen on hard times.
I would like to see the club fund it and give these unfortunate souls some dignity back, get them safe and off the streets, and give them back the hope that they have lost in society.
I would like to see them given a chance to start all over again, and make the most of any opportu nity that comes their way.
Poverty and homelessness should not be a reality in Scotland in 2016.
There are many reasons for people being homeless and the ages vary from the very young to the old and vulnerable. Very often it is not their fault.
Unfortunately we have seen the weakest and most vulnerable on our streets being exploited in shelters such as the hideous ” bellgrove shelter ” in the Gallowgate, landlords receiving lots of money and their residents living in disgusting conditions.
Taking advantage of those less fortunate, those who have little choice, is one of the 21st century’s most despicable crimes, yet it’srampant in the poorest sections of society.
I don’t know if it can be done or if the Celtic board would consider such a move but it would be a big winner with the fans I believe, if Celtic were to construct a building, in the club’s name, in Walfrid’s name, that got the homeless off the streets, in the process making people safe and giving them a foundation, a start to getting their lives back together again.
Celtic , again, would be putting something into the community, something which is worthwhile.
The Celtic story of being formed for people who had nothing and giving them hope, is the story I fell in love with, it is the reason I support the club, reading about our origins as a kid ignited a flame in my heart, it has never burned stronger.
A building rising high into the East end sky, that has taken people from the streets and fed them, and made them safe would be remarkable, befitting a remarkable man and club.
Hail Hail!
HAPPY HOOOOOOOPY BIRTHDAY,Brother Walfrid.
You can look down us from above.
No-one else can look down on us.
We have come a long long way since your day,Sir.
I hope you are proud of those who came after you.
Cos we’re sure proud of you.
Well said Mick, I’m sure Andrew Kerins would be proud of what HIS Celtic has become, although I’m sure he would disagree with a few things as well.
Nevertheless, he has given us a great thing in our lives!
I know its all about commercialism but what would Sir Robert Kelly think about our club sponsers, a betting company and a drinks company, never mind Brother Walfrid.
Wuftie,
If it was down to me I would have UNICEF on the Hoops, but we can’t turn the money down unfortunately, I don’t like betting or alcohol names on our shirt either m8.
You would think a club the size of Celtic could attract a more morally appealing sponsor.
Excellent post M, I wonder what Brother Walfrid would think of a heated driveway.
Cheers Andybhoy, I would like to see it happen and I would love to see the reaction of our entire support, if the board brought it to their attention that they wanted to build something like this.
Quality peice Monti, I couldn’t imagine a more fitting tribute to our founding father’s than such a building, we the Celtic support/family has raised millions over the years for great charitable causes all over the world, we’ve never done it for awards, for medals or any kind of acknowledgment of other’s, we’ve done it because that’s what loving and supporting Celtic is all about its what makes us ” A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER ” I’m sure with the right people managing and promoting this venture and with the full Celtic support behind it then this could soon be a reality.. WALFRID HOUSE. Let’s get it done..HH
Keighley bhoy,
Absolutely mate, it would be wonderful to see this…
KEIGHLEY BHOY,wehave done so much good for charities and will continue to do so yet inmo we sell ourselves short,no other club comes near us in real worldwide support yet we fail to capitalise on this appeal, take Sunday for example a glorious day in more respects than one,why didn,t we in the run up have bands on playing music alluding to our heritage, why didn,t we invite the plethora of Celtic minded celebs making it a Celtic carnival, instead of a back garden fireworks display, why do we not capitalise on our world wide appeal by having a 2 day Celticfhest held at CP which would be sold world we earning a lot of money not just for the club but more so for our charities.
He was born in 1840
Yes we know that, on the 18th May…..
So you changed your initial error of 140 years.
Chucky R Law,
Is that the most constructive you can be?
Maybe try and look at the sentiment behind the thread rather than anything else?
That was me.
Just a bit of a stickler for facts. Also a bit of a pedant.
Good article though – says much about the government that was voted into office in Scotland when football supporters have to take it upon themselves to feed and shelter the less fortunate among us.
To be fair, if you hadn’t have pointed it out, I wouldn’t have noticed. lazy, and i don’t know where it came from.
Well done Monti, excellent piece. Walfrid House is also a great idea. This is why we support Celtic, even if we won nothing. Spot on about Unicef or Oxfam. More than just a football club, always.
Thanks Devoy!
Great article Monti on an issue that is close to your heart,a fine tribute to our founding father. The people of Glasgow and Bonnie Dundee have been treated abysmally by the Political parties of every hue, only today we hear of Falkirk Labour/Tory led Council providing funds for the Orange Walks, add last years Bigot Fest at George Square into the mix along with the huge salaries of Council Chief Executives and we can see where our Council tax is targeted, surely they should be providing the facilities you suggest. The Celtic Supporters are the club, generous to a fault and provide for many, many good causes,if they decide that this would be a good cause then i too would back it wholeheartedly.H.H.
Mike, thanks.
Maybe Lawwell could put his £500,000 bonus to the running of the shelter every time we don’t qualify for the CL?
Post gone hiding in the new Brother Walfrid Hoose,it may come oot later, unless its to cosy in there.
Until this Celtic board comprising of an over paid CEO,Tories and a out of touch chairman take their head’s out of each other’s backsides and pay the living wage to the ones who need it most, the same one’s who have more of a true love of Celtic than any board member, then this vision of helping the most vulnerable in Glasgow will certainly never get the financial backing from Celtic FC.. As usual it will be up to us the support to finance it, I’m sure the James Mcavoys,Gérard Butler’s, Jim Kerrs of the Celtic world could through their full celeb status and financial clout behind this great idea…KTF
Keighley bhoy,
Totally agree, there is scope to do something like this surely?
great article monti somebody said to me today the difference between celtic and sevco is we build a statue to our founder they try to jail theirs ha ha
Cheers Charlie,
I think it would raise the bar in terms of what Celtic’s social mission started out on, a permanent structure which was really professionally run would be a real lasting legacy of Andrew Kerins.
I’m going to email Celtic with this idea just to gauge their thoughts.
I’m not sure if it will be done but I know the Celtic support would be all over this.
Monti
Sorry to be so late in commenting on such a heartfelt tribute and idea. Your passion for higher ideals at Celtic is palpable and inspiring. I guess I just felt the same about the club. I often, probably more than many would have wished for, said there was a line in the sand which Celtic supporters will not cross but there is simply no line to be seen when it comes to whom they will help. The club is willing but its flesh is often weak. It is time for them to listen to to and follow the example of the supporters. I would not wish to put an exclusive Christian tag on our charity work, especially as there are massive numbers in our fan base who have very different beliefs, but it is following the precept of Jesus who said the greatest of these is love, of The Father and OUR NEIGHBOUR. His parable of the Good Samaritan then explains unequivocally who our neighbour is. He is everyone including those you so eloquently describe in your article. In fact, such homeless and destitute brothers and sisters are probably nearer to the Good Samaritan’s victim than any others we encounter in our daily lives.
Monti, you really moved me.

Pensionerbhoy,
I really appreciate your comments sir, thank you for that.
I think our supporters are an incredible group of people, we can achieve anything we put our mind to.
It’s time long overdue now that this Celtic board appreciated the people who make our club what it is.
Our supporters deserve only the best.
” They are there and they are always there ” – Tommy Burns.
Monti
You are most welcome and I share each of your sentiments regarding the club and the support.
Lang may ye’re lum reek!
H H
An admirable sentiment. Close to most-if not all- Celtic ‘minded’ people ethos. I’m sure if enough of us advocated for such a bold move from Celtic it may just become a reality. It would have to be a long-term vision & strategy though.
Bondi,
Thanks for replying.
monti i showed yer article toma wee maw lawt night she said the bhoys right if it wisnae for the likes of walfrid and celtic most of us wouldnae be here hail hail
God bless yer wee maw Charlie!!
thanks monti she says bring um roon for sunday dinner efter chapel he dis go to chapel dinty charlie ha ha
Monti…I was thinkin’
Walfrid House
East end of Glasgow
(shelter/hot meals/food bank)
Scottish Government
Celtic Football Club
Glasgow City Council
Homeless charities
Celtic Foundation
Celtic Board
Celtic fans
Celtic Players
Charity football match could fund this (current Celts against past stars) This could draw 50,000 paying fans at Celtic Park.
A trust set up for annual running costs.
Food could be donated to a food bank there.
Fans would set up standing orders for fan contributions. Even £10/20 per fan annually would be a big help.
All Celtic players would contribute financially (contracts) and be required to put in some time at the facility with its day-to-day running.
The home would be open to all regardless or race, religion, football affiliation Social workers could determine need.
It is a vision but could be completed sooner rather than later.
devoy45 why not take it a step further and have a Celticfhest at CP invite a host of celebs have groups on playing “our” music mix it with games invite those with dis-abilities/dis-enfranchised,the videos of this would go nation/world wide giving our charities/club a much needed boost.
John,
I would have to insist on a few Republican flute bands in attendance 🙂
just a few monti?
Maybe a few more then…..:)
Devoy,
Top quality thoughts, great ideas in there!
If we have to put up with shirt sponsorship, especially those that are gambling and alcohol related, I think the club could at the very least divert a considerable portion of the revenue to building a Brother Walfrid House.
If we are to get in to bed with these type of sponsors, as they contribute to the poverty of so many people, it seems only right that they help with those that are less fortunate.
Pappnase,
Well said mate and I fully agree
Very well put.
Great thought provoking article well done monti
Tony,
Thanks for that mate, as you are well aware Celtic is a powerful thing in our lives, yes it’s a game of football we know that, but there is so much more to Celtic than just football.
I think Celtic have a long way to go in fulfilling it’s potential but the people who make Celtic what it is, the supporters, will always be there for the club.
This building I’m going on about excites me and it would be a fitting testament to Walfrid and all those associated with Celtic in the beginning, the early days.
Guys,
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to comment on this, much appreciated!
