Celtic Diary Wednesday March 30: Another Celtic PR Triumph

Of the Celts involved in international action, the one who came closest to sitting out the rest of his season in the treatment room was danish defender Erik Sviatchenko, who somehow walked away from this tackle, by an over enthusiastic Liam Bridcutt ( no, I’d never heard of him either )

Bridcutt tackle

A confused Scott Brown showed commendable loyalty to his fellow Scot who faced the wrath of the Danes afterwards, and kept the kicking for the Leeds man until he got to the dressing room…

Didn’t he ?

Anyway, it all ended in a yellow card for Bridcutt and Neil Lennon got a touchline ban.

Brown was seen to tell Sviatchenko to get up after the tackle, which may have been misinterpreted, and the Celtic captain must have decided he wants to be a referee when he retires..

“I thought it was a fair tackle the way I saw it but I haven’t seen it back yet. Erik got up and that’s the main thing.”

to which Svaitchenko said;

“If he sees it again he will probably say it’s a fair tackle again.

“Broony is a funny guy, when he plays he plays with his heart and wants to win every ball. He is right, I am still here, I am not injured, so he can have the right saying that.”

If I were Brown, and Sviatchenko was hurtling towards me in a training match while i was in possession, I’d tell him to “just take it “.

From a Scotland point of view, Bridcutt can be said to have been giving one hundred per cent. From a Celtic point of view, he’s clearly not mature enough for the top level yet.

And Brown ?

Maybe he didn’t see it, but maybe a wee chat with John Kennedy might set him right. Club loyalties apart, it’s his job to make sure Scotland debutants don’t get carried away by the occasion, and he, more than anyone, should know what injuries can mean.

It was a friendly , after all.

Keiran Tierney did well in his debut, but Leigh Griffiths appeared bemused again by the decision to have someone up front helping him. Anyway, at least they didn’t get hurt and thats the main thing.

Back at the ranch, and Calum MacGregor, speaking at a Show Racism the Red Card event, claims he’s now all grown up after his recent, er, issues.

“It is only natural that when you are doing well you think the world is your oyster and you feel invincible But you get that kind of bang back down to earth. It was a big wake-up call.

“The standards you need to be at every week is the mental side that I have learned. When you go on the park you have to be 100 per cent ready and I am trying to do that every week.”

When MacGregor broke into the side after he returned from a loan spell in england, he thought he’d made it. Then he realised he hadn’t, and now he knows what he has to do to stay in the team.

And thats not to fret over an international call up…

“I am obviously disappointed not to be in the squads but a few boys have done well and deserve to be there,”

Still a ways to go, one feels, but at least he’s on the right road.

Walking, obviously.

Celtic’s PR man , whoever he is, whenever he gets back off his break, might want to think about something he missed at the weekend.

Something that perhaps ties in the the clubs identity ?

Look, even Kenny MacAskill noticed what was important about last weekend, as the Irish Post explains..

A LEADING politician has called on the Scottish government to celebrate famed Irish independence fighter James Connolly.

Former Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill made the comments yesterday, calling on the Scottish Parliament to officially recognise the role that Edinburgh-born Connolly played in Ireland’s Easter Rising.

Over the coming year the 1916 Rising Centenary Committee (Scotland) – which includes Mr MacAskill – plan to commemorate the contingent of Glasgow-based members of the Irish Volunteers that participated in the Rising.

The key role played by James Connolly will be a particular focus for the group.

Connolly was executed by British forces for his participation in the Rising which took place 100 years ago next April.

In his motion brought to parliament this week, Mr MacAskill called for recognition of Connolly’s involvement with the Scottish Socialist Federation, the Independent Labour Party and his work with socialist politics in the US, before his involvement in the Rising.

“As long as they don’t sing about it ” he added, off the record,

The hypocrisy is stunning, with Celtic supporters condemned, arrested , beaten and imprisoned in Guantanamo bay,- which is bad enough, but those orange overalls – it seems a little odd that MacAskill should be the one to point out the obvious.

Scotland has ignored the celebrations of its nearest and dearest neighbour.

But we can always count on that bastion of Irishness Celtic Football club to recognise and remember the events of Easter 1916…can’t we ?

Apparently not, there’s that silence again.

Resolution 12-nothing.

EBTS, cheating, -nothing.

And now, a celebration of events that were to lead to the biggest change in Irelands history  – nothing.

Why did the club not at least recognise the significance of the weekend ?

After all, the club does have significant Irish roots, or does it only suit the board to mention that when its a chance to make money from it ?

It reminds me of the first foodbank appeal organised by the Green Brigade, the exuberant singing section with a heart of gold, as the club failed to acknowledge or mention that either.

Its either just piss poor PR, with no-one making the connection between Ireland and Celtic, or an indefensible board decision, which can be interpreted as “Look, we used to be Irish, but we’ve moved on….”

Even Lizzie the second laid a wreath in honour of the dead.

But Celtic ?

Nothing. Not so much as an enjoy yourselves while you’re out.

Recent events have suggested a drifting apart between those who earn from the club, and those who pay for it.

The board and the fans haven’t been this far apart since the days of Michael Kelly, though at least he continues to provide occasional comic relief.

Its almost like they don’t care…

There seems to be a groundswell of supporters who may hesitate, for their own reasons, to renew their season books this summer.

A number of reasons.

In the interest of fairness and balance, here are some reasons why you should.

Actually, I’d be grateful if you could fill this bit in. I’m fresh out of ideas.

The cup semi final draws nearer, stop yawning at the back, and the club have slipped in a little warning…

The possession and use of fireworks, smoke bombs, firecrackers and all pyrotechnics at any stadium is illegal and is absolutely prohibited. Again, we stress the dangers surrounding fireworks and pyrotechnics, which are considered a serious safety issue. Any supporter participating in such conduct may be removed from the stadium and prohibited from attending future matches involving the Club.

Fair enough, and I’ll adhere to it, and so should you.

Mind you, there’s no mention of this…

Which you could probably find on Ebay, or in most pubs in the Lancashire/Merseyside area.

Speaking of that game, Mark Warburton has nearly finished his coaching course, and will be even better by the time the game comes around..

Nevertheless, those experts at the Daily Record have given him five handy hints to help him beat Celtic;

Well, their “Rangers ” blogger has…

1: Turn the screw on Ronny Deila

Ultimately, if Rangers are defeated, it’s the expected result, BUT if Celtic fall then it’s the end of the management team, uncertainty for a large proportion of the squad and huge pressure on Peter Lawell. Warburton has to crank up the pressure, remind his players that the pressure is off, while turning the screw on Celtic and their boss.

There appears to be little love lost between Deila and the player that Rangers fans should fear the most, Kris Commons. Perhaps a wee press conference bomb on that subject wouldn’t go amiss.

Always bombs, isn’t it ? Oh, and maybe a bullet in the post ?

The ‘Ronny roar’ is a psychologically telling bit of populism: here is a man that needs to be loved to his very core. There’s a thread to be pulled here if Warburton can pick at it via the media.

Oh come on, thats just Record editorial policy..though I love the bit about Commons being the man Rangers fans fear. But then, they’ve been away for a while, and probably havent noticed the goals that Leigh Griffiths has scored, whoalong with commons has scored against them every time he’s played them.

2: Exploit Sviatchenko with pace

The Dane comes with good pedigree but he’s raw and still getting used to the pace of Scottish Football. We have also seen in flashes he’s not a guy that relishes either a foot race or players dribbling at pace which is one commodity that Rangers have in abundance and can use to their advantage. This can become especially crucial in the quick transitions of play that this Rangers side thrive on.

He’s an international defender. Like what they haven’t got. They do have an international forward, pictured above, but he may not be as , er, pacey , as he used to be. Mind you, they could use Dave King. He’s quick around the box. Especially one with someone elses money in it.

3:Stop Kieran Tierney

Oh, come on. He’s no Lee Wallace…

An impressive young player with pace, drive and a wicked delivery, James Tavernier needs to be at the top of his game to deal with this attacking threat and will need defensive help from Barrie McKay that is rarely required at Championship level. Stopping his delivery can help isolate Leigh Griffith and thus neuter Celtics main threat.

Yeah, if the bombs and bullets don’t work, let’s neuter them.

4:Get tight to Leigh Griffiths

Now he’s just pulling letters out of the scrabble bag and hoping they make sense.

With a deceptive turn of pace and clever runs in behind, Griffiths can be a defenders nightmare if you let him play his natural game. Get in close and make him play with his back to goal and he’s much less effective. Kiernan and Wilson will have to be at their best to nullify his threat and a continuation of the individual mistakes seen from the pair on occasion this season would be heavily punished.

Oh, he means “get him nullified”. which might not  be legal, even if you do it to a cat.

Well spotted, though, he is less effective with his back to goal. Griffiths may have solved this problem, however, having mastered the art of turning around.

5:Rope-a-dope

Does he mean “Pick Me ? ”

Er, no…

Mark Warburton’s Rangers have spent most of their time dominating opponents’ territory but their pace in forward areas and penetration from midfield is also tailor-made for fast counters as Celtic push forward. If Rangers can marshal their defence properly they have the attacking quality to cause serious problems. Preventing a Celtic goal in within the first 20 minutes will be key in setting the tone for the match and will help doubts to creep in amongst Celtic’s players.

Yeah. Good luck with that. Inviting the free scoring Celtic forwards, who play at a higher level,  onto the defence that has conceded six goals in their last two games-Falkirk and Queen of the South-in the hope of getting a break away ?

You do that.

Couple of caption competition winners now…

Again, some quality yesterday, so a trickier one today…

Ralph, if Celtic’s pr man wants to quickly remedy the glaring oversight of not acknowledging the 1916, he/she/they should provide a link to “Centenary”.
This concert was on RTE1 on Monday night. It was a beautifully made commemoration of the events of the rising through music, song and dance.
I recommend all of you to try and watch it. It will probably be available on the RTE player. It was very moving and IMHO the piece about the martyrs deathbed letters and then followed by Grace ( song about Joseph Mary Plunkett’s last words to Grace Gifford who he had married hours earlier) is the greatest love song ever.
Now Celtic, there is there is the ultimate in PR and it’s only a link away.

With all these players deployed to neutralise neuter and nullify ( maybe his dictionary only has N’s in it) Celtic’s main threats, how is sevco going to actually play a game of football with the intention of winning unless they are allowed to field 22 men.

It’s all about trying to stop Celtic isn’t it?

I think they’l be happy enough to escape without a severe humiliation.

I love how they’re trying this line that if they get beat it’s just the expected result and all the pressure is on Celtic. Bullsh1t! King will not give Warbs a Warbchest of any sort during the summer, so the Sevco team that plays us in the semi final is pretty much the one that will be in the SPL next year….so if we give them a tanking it will dawn on the currant buns that they are miles off the pace and they will start to finally call for King to over invest. Make no mistake, King and Warburton will be sh1ting it from taking a tanking off us. Don’t by into this line that there is no pressure on them and it’s all on us.

PS the game is 2 and a half weeks away…..the Daily Record are shooting their load a bit early over this game running articles like this already. Celtic have got important business against proper SPL team before they worry about a new club from the lower leagues.

I don’t think we have it in us to destroy anyone guys. We have the same players who played against east kilbride and only won 2-0.
We don’t play teams off the park anymore,we are a poor team ourselves.
Why worry also about res 12 also. What will happen a fine,a sacking to someone in the sfs some compensation for Celtic. What is it exactly that people want res 12 to achieve? Because I don’t think it will achieve the aspirations of those persuing it. Only my opinion of course.
When Farry deliberately mishandled the cadette transfer, what did we get 10k in compensation.
Farry got sacked but walked away with a 200k handshake. What is going to change, with an outcome on Res 12.
Celtic sent over a full contingent to support the home rule bill in Dublin in 1896.The only sporting club to do so,a huge statement by our founding fathers.

Absolutely bg. While the much heralded msm tells Timmy to get back in their box and move on. Titles must be stripped and a complete clear out of all corrupt parties involved in what amounts to the end for Scottish football and should that include Celtic board members, well, put it this way, the moon is not far enough away for them.
If nothing is done then the game is dead to more than you could possibly imagine.

Before that came out, would any reasonable person have believed such a finding possible? I think what Jimmy is saying is that we should not get our hopes up on Res 12. It seems there is an Establishment that has no shame in what it will do to deny truth.
Don’t get me wrong, I support Res 12 and want to see it progress but I shall not be surprised at the efforts that will be used to preserve the status quo.

Reply to  jimmybee

Jimmybee,

There are lots of things in the football world that baffle me. Here are two that are relevent to the Res12 situation. Firstly, why does the club not come out publically and support this? Secondly, why does the club not explain its silence on the matter? Whatever some may think, the board is not populated with stupid people who do not hear the discontent from fans. People that daft would not succeed in life as they have.

This is why I think there is something going on that we have not been told, and we are not being told because in doing so, it would defeat the purpose. That is the only explanation that I can see for the silence. Now some of the Res 12 guys have obliquely made reference to this and say the reason for the club’s silence will become clear later. Whatever this is, is a matter of pure speculation for everyone outside a tight circle. I am prepared to wait to see what emerges before arriving at a judgement.

Now on the boycott idea, I can see why some might arrived at this conclusion through frustration with the SFA, the refs, the bigotry from the other lot. Living in Canada, I am not subjected to the worst of these things and the hateful PR that justifies them. However, I ask you to ask yourself this one question. Are you prepared to expose your team to a totally hostile environment against SEVCO, and the negative effect that it will have on Celtic’s performance? If you have thought of this and think that the long game makes it worthwhile to sacrifice the team on this game, then fine…I respect your stance. However, if you are not prepared to face the fallout from the lack of support for the team on the day, you need to grab your favourite brew and think all through again.

If there is one game in this terrible season that I want to see result in a win…..it is this one.

I stuck up for Peter Lawwell in the past when he was criticised for saying nothing, publicly about the whole Huns Circus.
I remember reading something from him about keeping our fans safe, we all know what he meant by that and he was right, if Celtic had got involved, the media would have turned their liquidation into Celtic’s fault and an ‘ Old firm war ‘ would have followed, so in that respect I understand Celtic’s reluctance to get involved.
However, resolution 12 is an entirely different beast, we are talking here about the governing bodies reluctance to apply it’s own rules, in favour of a former club (Rangers IL) and it’s bastard offspring (Sevco).
Our club has been shat on from a great height by those at Hampden, they always have done in my opinion, that’s why I no longer give a duck if the national side, win, lose or draw a game.
There has been years of cherrypicking Huns in suits for positions within the SFA, the most sinister being Campbell Ogilvie, there is blood on this man’s hands and he needs sat down in front of a public investigation enquiry, a man so embroiled in all of the cheating he couldn’t get involved (sic) in any investigations into original Rangers cheating?

At the end of day we just want a fucking honest game to watch, no favours, no dodgy decisions just a fucking honest game to go and see.
I have very little faith in anything in Scottish football, in fact in Scotland in general…from the courts, to the Police, The SFA and their hand picked referees, I trust not fucking one of them.
Where are all the other supporters of other clubs demanding a fair game and change?
This is the time to bury the Huns and the establishment for good, if that can’t motivate everyone in Scotland who wants an honest game,
then nothing will.
Scottish football is broken, it is fucked!

Every fan of every club outside of Sevco need to do something about it.

Fuck the SFA!

Monti,

Very good post. You are so correct that the real power for change comes through the association of the other clubs in the game. We saw how effective this was when they combined to not accept SEVCO into the SPL. The vote was 10-1, I think.

I think that gathering support for Res 12 will have to come through supporters associations/clubs. Trouble is that will be a full time job. Who is going to take it on?

Anyway, got to go now. I spend too much time on this blog. Great debate, tho!

I agree with all that you say,we all know what the sfa are all about. From the time of demanding the tri-colour be taken down,to the Cadette transfer, the EBTs the favouritism towards the established club was plain for all to see.
Yet Celtic never backed away from their responsibilities to their fans. Yet here we have a monumental call for the club from its fans and shareholders to publicly act on Res 12 or at least give voice as to why it has not acted upon such callings. Yet silence.
Something isn’t as it should be, and we need to know what that is,or at least the shareholders need to know why that is.

Mike, when Fergus beat the sfa he was gutted that Farry walked away with 200k in his pocket, it riled him badly. But nothing he could do about it.
This is my problem. Res 12 is great work by the guys, and they deserve answers to their questions.
However I don’t know what victory would give us.
All I see and forgive me for this, but is some compensation to Celtic,an outburst by the media that it has nothing to do with new Rangers,Some cronies sacked by the sfa,and more cronies put in. Is that out of line?
Or is there more serious actions brought to roost, and if so what actions would fans expect the powers at be to use.

Jimmybee,

I do not think Rogic will play from the start due to his travel to Aussie over the last week.

I hope he does not play both Forest and Roberts. They are wingers that almost always cut inside. Forest runs across the defensive line until he loses the ball. Roberts needs to be told to get to the bye line and cross the ball back to the penalty spot, but I suspect he will not start as he is inexperienced. I hope McGregor is in the mix, and, I suspect that GMS will start.

I also hope that Mulgrew is retained at CH and I hope that Eric is fit.

I think that they will stick(i hope)to the
4=3=3 formation that he has recently heard from my posts.

Gordon
Lustig Sviet Mulgrew Tierny.
Brooni Mcgregor Biton
Commons Griff GMS.
See that works best for the Tic.

Jimmybee,your system to defensive.
Bboy,Rogic will be to travel weary.
Monti, have a wee bit of faith and listen to the Master.

Because he is a very good football player, who when in the mood, is unplayable!

Young James, has more to offer than people give him credit for I like his direct style and with Lustig playing further forward,it would allow James better options IMO. He could set set alight the team again with his style of play from a more central role.
I just think we are too slow and clumsy in the midfield areas the ball goes sideways too often instead of more direct passing and running.
Hearts will sit in and we need only to keep 3 centre backs to watch the back door.
Lustig bombing down the right,Izzy down the left, more space inside for more speedy players.
Hence Forrest Johansen and Roberts.
Nothing but attack in my selections with only1 sitting midfielder.

4-2-3-1
…………GORDON
.
LUSTIG..ERIK..MULDINI..TIERNEY
.
…….BROWN..JOHANSEN
.
…COMMONS..ROGIC..MCGREGOR
.
………..GRIFFITHS

Griffiths operates better up on his own that much is obvious so therefore we should play to his strengths.

Nonsense

It could be the innovative 9-1 formation. That is nine midfielders with another three in reserve to be substituted in when we have not scored by the 75th minute.

Is there anyone in the Hearts team worth watching as a recruit for next year?
