Improving The PR..

Charlie Saiz has been thinking about the clubs-and the games-public image…

A few days ago I posted regarding my long held views on managers and players doing post match interviews.

After further thought, there’s a lot more wrong with the way things are done, not only at Celtic Park, but in the game itself.
Firstly, and most signifcantly, ththese interviews take place too soon after a game has finished.
TV restraints and time schedules of course have a lot to do with this but I believe that both the managers and players should have had time to wind down after a game, collect their thoughts and have time to go over contentious decisions that may or may not have had an impact on the final result.
All too often it seems a microphone is thrust under a managers face within minutes of the whistle, the interviewer acutely aware through replays that certain decisions have had a massive bearing on events and the manager may just be on the edge as the question is posed, thus providing him with an off the cuff emotional remark that may later show the interviewee was wrong, and has just made a fool of himself.
For me anyway a cooling off period should be given.
The manager should have the opportunity to review the footage and time to evaluate the situation if indeed there has been one. This would allow him to ask a few questions of his own.

Especially where the more contentious game changing events are concerned.
Any post match sensationalism, which is what the tv companies want, could be added to by bringing in  referees  to do post match summaries so they too can explain their decision making during games when contentious incidents have occurred and they have been forced to make a judgement call that has affected the game as a result.
Give them a good 45 minutes to review and perhaps even re evaluate any wrong call they may have made. Or, indeed, any right call.
This I believe could go a long way to nipping any of the usual conspiracy theories from forming regarding bias and honest mistakes. and it could also cut down on the abuse of the appeal system, when clubs appeal knowing they will lose, but allowing a player to play in an important game.
All to often managers run off at the mouth and end up on a disrepute charge as a result.whereas refs make their calls and that’s the last you hear  about it even if they have obviously made a mistake.
Never accountable ,never approachable and ultimately above resolving the matter.
If a ref came out held his hands up and said “Look on review I have called it wrong there and have apologised to the injured party” then most would be able to accept that and move on. It would also earn them a degree of respect that isn’t there at the moment.
This setup needs reviewed as I believe it would allow us all to calm down and move on that wee bit quicker if things were dealt with in a calm rational manner.

More importantly, it would make everyone accountable, and involve a degree of transparency not always apparent in the game.

Just think, a manager and a referee discussing how the game went.

Live on television after they have both prepared their arguments.

And then they could take it in turns to punch Neil McCann or Pat Nevin.

No reason, just because they would be there.

If Celtic are to improve their current PR, they need to take control of the media. A delay in post match interviews will be a start.  Even just a few more minutes to allow the boss to compose himself and structure his comments .

Failing that, he could do them in Norwegian.

also gives him time to conjure up more dross. i think he puts way too much philosophy in his comments. its a smokescreen whats actually happening. rhetoric to prolong his career. it reeks of just keep believing with no signs of improvement. better to get to him as soon as possible to give us some insight into how much he knows about whats actually going on in the heat of it

its also part of a so called entertainment package to get an early interview. i think most of us want to move on with our lives and netflix or a lucky shag fuck waiting around for 45 minutes after a draw against hamilton

Delia while he is still here should not at any point talk to the press as they turn everything and anything against him, surely Celtic as a club can see this.
Why not appoint someone else to do it and just give them a load of bullshit about absolutely bugger all.
On another note why don’t you fuck off back to Norway Delia as you are fucking useless.

I think the post match interviews are fine as they are!

why dont they put monitors somewhere in the dugouts to watch replays of incidents.so managers are privy to penalty incidents and sending offs. they can then give qualified opinion. anyway its only a matter of time before video refs come into football. it happens in rugby league cricket and tennis.

Some years ago I interviewed the SFA’s public relations officer (Andy Mitchell) and I was very impressed with his professionalism and knowledge of the sport. It was about the time of the Chris Sutton interview just after the Kilmarnock game, and Andy showed me a position paper he had submitted to the SFA and other authorities some months before. The paper recommended (among there things) that no interviews be conducted within an hour of the match; however, he felt that TV would over-rule that in an attempt to prolong ‘the show’ – and he regretted that.

Tom Campbell,
Would this be the same ” Professional and Knowledgeable ” Andy Mitchell formerly of the SFA, who in 2005 I think it was, instructed wrongly,Dundee Utd that they had qualified automatically for that years UEFA cup, when in fact that honour went to Hibernian.

I have never attributed the word professionalism, to anyone at the SFA.

Aye Tom I think alot more could be done regarding this situation because as we all know football can be a very emotional subject for some and sometimes those emotions can overspill when not kept in check.
Suttons reaction that day whilst understandable came across very poorly on the Club I thought.
Had that interview taken place an hour later I think Sutton would have been a wee bit more circumspect in his reply.
Same goes with Deila post Boyata last week I think.
The referees could do a piece say a 10 minute run down of the key decisions and I think this could go along way to removing some of the unsavoury and frankly mind boggling aspects of their application of the rules during these events?
Give them an hour to review the footage then give them the time to make sense of it all.
All too often what is said directly after a game becomes more important than the game itself.
HH Hope the recovery is going well Tom.

Is this what you are talking about ? Where the Turkish ref interrupted a flash interview after making a penalty decision that was proved wrong.
They are meeting today to talk about video replays being accepted and available when the ref is in doubt.
Scotland is one of the chosen leagues to trial this technology.

Interesting that Paul not seen that footage before cheers.
The Manager appears to be much happier the ref has owned his part in the events and been man enough to admit his failings.
Instead what we have zero input from refs and a system that hammers coaches for criticising them openly in interviews all too soon after the whistle.
Something needs to change I feel.

Can I apply here for the PR role at Celtic FC ?
Once again we are patronised..only this time by a newcomer who is here on loan…and spouting off in the Scotsman.
Do the powers that be think we are Muppets..?
Strike that question…
The powers that be must think we’re Muppets who want to listen to this guff again…and again…and again.
BTW this isn’t an attack on young Roberts…he’s been wheeled out to spout this tosh…so its not him I’m on about…It’s the idiot who thought it was a good idea.
For Celtic FC’s information…all supporters I know and talk to…hate this kind of nonsense..so ditch it.
And to quote the late great Elvis…
A Little Less Conversation…A Little more Action Please.

On the refs coming out and explaining decisions, they did do this a few of years ago, albeit through the SFA website.

Pretty sure that was stopped because it was apparent that refs were having to admit to a disproportionate number of ‘honest mistakes’ going against a certain team from the East End of Glasgow; thus making it clear some of us just weren’t paranoid enough.

Apparently.

The Media doesn’t’ want cool and considered interviews. They want the adrenaline high and the hearts pumping max.rate. Gut reactions are much more desirable in the hope that something sensational might be said or occur, thus helping increase viewing figures.
My main worry about delayed interviews would concern the possibility that they might be hijacked by the “powers that be” to promote their own nefarious propaganda.

I think it’s contractual that the coaching staff do the interviews bud.
I agree though I would not want the likes of Peter Lawwell using it as a free ad for Club spin.

North American baseball is also a game of inches and mistakes made by umpires. They have a good system. The umpires meet immediately after a contentious call, study the video evidence, and seconds later give their verdict and signal that to the crowd! The game resumes and everybody is happy. It only takes seconds. Could be used over here for offsides, ball crossing the line or not, handballs, red cards, did he get the ball first? It takes seconds and every team could contribute to the video cost. No more MIBs, no more ‘honest’ mistakes, no more greetin’ faces like McInnes and Warburton.

Devoy,

I completely agree with that, they video the Rugger tries, but i prefer the North American system.
Last years League Cup Semis was a case in point. One Ref.and four assistants could not spot an obvious hand ball but the tv showed what everyone in the stadium saw.
Charlie i agree 100% about transparency from refs. and there aftermatch interviews should be on telly just after the game.
Will it happen in Scotia, naw it wont untill they clear out all the cheats and bigots at the SFA,SPFL Media including the National broadcaster, as for Cellic P.R.anything is better than what we have at present, cause its non existant, well ay feel better noo.

look this article is well written with lots of valid points.in an ideal world a cooling off period would possibly give us a clearerpicture of events just passed However, lets not get sidetracked with one or two incidents in a game, because mistakes are always going to happen by refs because they have to make on the spot decisions. i dont think refs should be overly accountable for every mistake they make except to their own body. the refs assosciation or whatever its called. they can then chastise the refs and give them games in the lower leagues if they keep making blunders. there is too much attention on what refs are doing wrong.. fucking tired of hearing how biased they are its not true. fans thinking get coloured especially when the team they are supporting is playing poorly. focus shoild be on footballing matters. refs should be anonymous. the inverness decision last yeat was a howler but inverness deserved their win. bad decisions balance out through the course of a season.

emotions run high after a game especially if there is controversial decisions to be processed in the aftermath. the managers post match interview should encompass his thoughts on the whole ninety minutes and the salient events not just one decision.
