Celtic Diary Friday March 4: Gauny Dae Somethin’

Every man and his dog is offering advice to the Celtic board, the Celtic manager and the Celtic players. If someone doesn’t get a grip soon, the whole lot will explode and we’re going to be sitting round discussing what we should have done.

We all have our own ideas.

But for the moment at least, the only thoughts that matter are those of the manager.

‘I look at everything, ‘There are three things (that are) important – first is physical and second its mental stress.

‘Everything is affected but the mental things can be affected more. You train and then when you stop training you can lie on your couch with your feet up so you can rebuild your body.

‘If you think about other things 24/7 then it’s about getting positive thoughts, thoughts you can do something about.

‘Not about if you will win the league, if you will play, if the fans will get after you.

‘You can’t do anything about that and you have to keep your mind away from those things.

He may have a point. The players, especially the new boys, cannot handle what has become unrelenting pressure, and the one’s he maybe thought he could rely on are shirking their responsibilities.

Yesterday, for instance, on the back of a dreadful performance against Dundee, it was left to Patrick Roberts, the loan siging from Manchester City, who must have wished he had kept his hand down when the biannual “who fancies a crack at Scottish football ? ” was asked in the Etihad dressing room.

“This is the biggest club in Scotland so there’s going to be pressure to win every game, which is normal and what I expected. It’s why I came here.

“It was good to get a first start and get the full 90 minutes, although it was disappointing not to win the game.

“You can feel the fans’ frustration because we feel it on the pitch as well, but we need to pick ourselves back up and get playing the way we were earlier in the season.

“We need to stick together, not letting our heads go down and just concentrate on the next game.”

The last line could be very telling, as it may imply a split in the dressing room. Yet overall, what he says is perfectly sound, and extremely simple when you think about it.

Get on with the job and stop bloody blaming everyone else.

Some months ago, when Celtic exited Europe’s premier competition, Stefan Johansen went on record as saying that it was a bit of a disappointment. As champions League football is a major selling point for the club when it comes to foreign and established players, the zest went out of their games knowing that a “real challenge ” wasn’t going to be there. The Europa League isn’t the same for players either, despite being drawn in a group which contained a couple of big names.

Then we had the three players, alleged to be Commons, Stokes and Mulgrew who were hauled in after some sort of players revolt, which was never really quelled.

Commons’s rant, aimed at Collins and not Deila, may also have let slip a little more about what is really going on.

One criticism aimed at the manager is a lack of strength in dealing with players. At this point, he should have stopped the tail from wagging the dog. If players weren’t going to do it his way, they should have been removed in January. At the time, the diary noted that this laissez faire approach could well cost him his job.

We appear to be edging towards that scenario, and indeed , if reports are to be believed , then Martin o’Neill is already lined up to take over.

Yet one of the stories about O’Neill concerns Charlie Mulgrew reminiscing in the dressing room. One of the main antagonists, allegedly, openly talking about the good old days. Subtle and sleekit undermining of the manager.

What we now see is a manager under pressure, despite, and this is crucial, a four point lead at the top of the table.

“Thats not enough, it should be more ! ” cry his opponents.

Like last year, presumably ? When after twenty eight games the table looked like this…

Celtic are down three points, and Aberdeen down one.

The fury whipped up by disgruntled supporters and happily seized on by the press could yet backfire.

Unless we all stop the moaning until at least the summer.

But as Deila is the man in the position to help allay the fears , he must be decisive and do what he is paid to do.

He must manage.

To my mind, he needs to question the attitude of some of his senior players. To his however, it’s a different story.

No-one tells me that Scott Brown or Charlie Mulgrew does not give 100 per cent. They may have been half a metre too late but it’s because they are drained and that’s what we have to turn around.’

Astonishing. I would give one hundred per cent, but I too, would perhaps be half a metre late. The trick is to pick someone who would get there half a metre early. If Brown and Mulgrew are drained, then they shouldn’t be starting.

There are young players, Deila’s own sigings , straining at the leash to get onto that pitch. Players who might even know what it means to wear that jersey, and they should be given a chance. Over the last few weeks, on the park, the senior players have let us down, and yesterday, not one of them had the balls to come out and admit it.

So if they won’t admit it, does that mean they don’t accept it ?

Are there possibly players, senior players, in that squad who can look at themselves and say that they are doing their bit ? If so, then there is a deeper problem than we first thought.

In my line of work, i’ve had to deal with people who blame others for their own deficiences, and the first thing I do is tell them I know exactly what is wrong, and then take to the car and ask them to look into the rear view mirror.

That, more often than not, will show them the problem.

Ronny, however, may need a bigger car.

Winning the fans over is a different proposition. For many it’s already too late. The results we can put up with, but this “Celtic Way ” of playing is a neccessity, despite it being more in our minds than actually a regular occurrence on the pitch.

With ten league games and a possible further three in the Cup, will they prove to be an unlucky thirteen for the Norwegian ?

Not if he has his way;

‘The fans come with performances. The last three matches now haven’t been at the level we want but we had a good spell in January and now we haven’t played at the level we want.

‘So then of course there are a lot of emotions, and that’s not only for the fans it’s also inside our group. We need to just keep on working hard and stay together as a group and I know also the fans will stay together with us because we are Celtic, and when we get good performances we will get back on track again.

‘It’s nothing about the attitude. The boys really, really want it. Nobody goes out in front of 40,000 people and wants to play badly or is lazy, especially in the situation we are in.

‘The players really want it but lately we haven’t played at the level we’ve wanted. It’s small details that we have to do better. I know we’re going to get there, it’s just about turning it around as quickly as possible. We’re still in a good situation in the league but our performances need to be better.’

He’s right, but what will he do about it ?

If, indeed, he gets the chance ? How’s he dealing with the pressure that appears to have crushed his most experienced players ?

‘I speak with Peter (Lawwell) every day so that’s nothing new Everybody in the club knows what situation we are in and how we are performing.

‘There’s pressure on everybody. Everybody is also quite experienced and knows how to do it.

‘Now we have to show how we turn it around. Of course. I believe in what I’m doing. This team has played very well under me.

‘Now we are in a period where we are not playing very good but we have to get back to the things we did before. It’s about improvement – it’s not about change.

‘We just have to keep winning games and performing.

Thats the size of it.

‘It’s true that if Aberdeen win every game and we slip up they are champions but it’s also true that if we win our games we are champions.’

Er, there wasn’t really any need to add that. To my mind it shows he is worrying about aberdeen, and in fact he should be concentrating on our side, and getting the team playing the way they can. Everything depends on this.

Aberdeen, of course, can smell fear. They’ve added to their own impetus by offering the players a little incentive, taking their lead from a similar offer given to nigerian players which spurred them on to African Nations glory…

Of course, several players failed to see the attraction, so the offer was improved.

As it stands, Morton are next up.

Maybe we should get behind the side.

Deila Out banners, bedsheets and booing  isn’t going to help the team.

We are Celtic supporters. And the club needs us right now.

Away from all that, it appears that the Daily Record, who offer a “Celtic blogger ” and a “Rangers blogger ” in an attempt to appear all modern, suffered a wee bit of embarassment yesterday when the representative of the dark side allowed his own feelings to run away with him, much like the spivs ran away with his money, to be fair.

which was later altered to…

Even more worryingly, look at the size of that arrow coming out of Keith Jacksons mouth. no wonder his colleague is looking worried.

Speaking of the Record, often criticised on this page, we have to say well done and credit where credit is due for todays headline, as it seems they have finally worked out exactly what is wrong with Scottish football.

Yes, he is.

Now , how about a campaign to get him out of there ?

Speaking of the beaks, Dedryck Boyata got the result of his appeal..

Disciplinary outcome: Dedryck Boyata (Celtic)

Thursday, 03 March 2016

A Disciplinary Tribunal convened today in accordance with the Judicial Panel Protocol to consider the following case:

Player: Dedryck Boyata (Celtic)
Match: Hamilton v Celtic (SPFL Premiership) – 26 February 2016
Case: Claim of Wrongful Dismissal (Denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity)
Outcome: Claim dismissed. One-match suspension applied (SPFL Premiership).

Well, it must be said right now we need a hero, and this leaves the way clear for him….

Cometh the hour, cometh the man….

When a team is missing heart and soul,

it needs a man like Efe.

Which reminds me, we need a caption competition, and for some reason, as regular readers may remember, when I think of Efe, I think of this picture… taken when he got tired after a cross country run.

Which makes a re-appearance as todays caption competition, in a probably futile attempt to put a smile back on our faces, if only for a moment.

Excellent Diary again Ralph though I would go easy on the statistical side of things you wouldn’t want to shatter any illusions old bean 😉
Said it at the time Commons should have been punted after his outburst .
Ant players involved in undermining the Manager or coaches should also be shown the door it does the team (no I in team remember)no good whatsoever and can quickly descend into chaos.
I remember Tim Sherwood pulling a similar stunt at Ewood Park when Roy Hodgeson was boss Blackburn were relegated after Hodgeson left and never fully recovered.
Sherwood fucked off to Spurs the following Season incidentally career intact.

Ralph,If as you suggest that MON,has been approached to take over in the summer, would it not be more astute to get that information out to the supporters now,to unite everyone, players, supporters alike so that we could all get behind the team for the final push towards the title.
If Ronny is as astute as we are led to believe then he could handle that knowing that his contract would be finished at seasons end,if he cannot then we would need to bring in our club ambassadors to see out the last 10 games.

good diary ralph, kind of agree expected something to be done yesterday, silence, so we are stuck with 3 amigos until the summer, need to get behind the team and pray that by some stroke of good fortune, we galvanise and win this league
its just so sad that we have wasted years, we should be miles in front of deadco and the rest and clearly we are not, DD PL must share responsibility along with a bunch of overpaid prima donnas, who could no care less and a managment team, who are clueless and delusional

Lots of talk from Ronny about what they need to do but does he ever mention how they are going to do it?

Also still being top of the league isn’t the issue. The performances and the lack of fight are. If Aberdeen were just a little bit more consistent they would be well ahead of us and there’s no way in hell we’re qualifying for the Europe Lge, nevermind the Champ Lge unless there’s a massive turnaround.

If the last match of the season is a title decider Vs Aberdeen would anyone bet money on us to win?

The solution is simple.
Here’s the System that you have been playing now each and every one of you go out and produce a performance worthy of that strip you are wearing.

“It’s about improvement – it’s not about change.

GOOD ENOUGH RALPH?

No-one tells me that Scott Brown or Charlie Mulgrew does not give 100 per cent. They may have been half a metre too late but it’s because they are drained and that’s what we have to turn around.’

As you say yourself if they are not up to it physically don’t fkn pick them.

We just have to keep winning games and performing.
“KEEP PERFORMING” WELL STARTING WOULD BE NICE
Ralph all the things the man says now are either platitudes, pseudo-psycho babble or wishfull thinking.

By the way I will be there on Saturday I will support the team I have had a season ticket for 25 years for, the team my father and my grandfathers supported and if I am not happy I will say so and if anybody doesn’t like it and wants to say I am not a supporter tough!

My support of Deila rested on my faith that we had found a team that could play, with some spirit and fire. I also believed we were really improving. But I no longer believe Deila can inspire his players. His team selections are becoming more bizarre. Here is a fact: I think in Deila’s reign(including cups) we have dropped points to every other team in the league (except maybe Partick) That is worrying because it means every team now knows how to take points off us but that there is no plan B. I hope we win the league and I hope we win the cup and can overcome the Dark side if we have to. I will be watching the rest of the season from behind the sofa. It is painful. Lose on Sunday and Deila will be gone! The MON rumour is too good to be true. Why would he possibly come back to Celtic?
No Sutton, No Hartson, No Larsson. It wouldn’t work. MON can’t do biscuit tins.

Devoy,

I am torn on the value of 4231. Yesterday someone said it is a great system because the three can switch back and forth between concentrating on defence and attack. Apologies that I cannot remember who made that excellent point! On the face of it, it sounds like the perfect system. Maybe if it had worked at Celtic, I’d be convinced. However, somehow I cannot buy into the idea that we should play with a single striker against teams like EK, and most of the SPL. With three forwards commited to going for goals we should murder most of these teams, most of the time.

I tend to agree with you on MON. I do not think he will come back. Also I do not think he is what we want at this stage. His teams are big and strong through the middle…we do not have that anymore. Secondly, was he not too successful at his last two clubs?

Ralph,

Good diary. Timewise (maybe other ways) I am 5 hours behind the old country. First thing I do in the early morning(actually the second!) is read the diary over a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich. A great way to start the day.

Now you are feeling secure let me comment on some of your content today. Firstly, the statistics….it has been said that some folks use statistics as a drunk uses a lamp post…..for support rather than illumination!

A major difference between this and last season is that, at this stage, we were still in two other competitions, the Europa and the League Cup. So you could argue that despite preparing for and playing less games this season, we are worse off in the league. The number of games played would seem to be an important factor in RD’s argument that players are drained. So this year, despite playing fewer games, they are drained? Something is no adding up here, and it’s not just the hairs on my head!

On the Commons front, let’s see. My memory is a bit rusty but wasn’t he the top scorer in Scotland the year before RD arrived? The coach wanted to introduce his own system, eliminated the role that Commons played, did not play Griff because he was not a professional athlete, faced a goal drought and brought both Griff and Commons back. To me this sounds like a man that does not know how to manage the resources that he has. This is not to mention the Mad Hatter approach to collecting midfielders. So, due to the philosophy of the coach, Commons goes from a key role in the team to a bit part player in a disasterous Eutopean campaign. Is there any wonder that he blows his top?

On the retain/detain the coach front…..IMHO, the fact he did not go yesterday means nothing. It was too soon for the board to act then. They need a replacement lined up before acting. Also, there is a cup tie at the weekend….best scenario is to leave the decision until after Morton.

Just some random thoughts covered in crumbs from my sandwich,

Rebus

Having been at all the home league matches this season,I thought what was the best performance that I have seen from us this season.I know not many but we try and get any little bit of comfort we can.
It was against Aberdeen when we beat them 3-1. This took us 7 clear of Aberdeen who had only won 1 point from a possible 15 after sitting 4 points clear of us In September.
So I thought lets see what the team was that day, and if they played consecutive games.
Gordon Lustig Boyata Simunovic,Tierney.
Bitton Johansen,
Forrest Rogic Commons
Griffiths
So a 3-1 convincing victory followed up by the same team against Ross County a 4-1 away win.
Then changes and that starting 11 has not took the field since.
Maybe Ronnie all you need to do is go back to the team that has played the best this season?

The table just shows we are every bit as crap this season as we were last season, nothing being learned by manager or board, our play is even more boring than it was a year ago,we have no tactics no variety, player played out of position, constant tinkering shows he has no idea what his strongest team is ,lost 2 semi,s to dodgy refereeing decisions, and done the same both times, takes off the player who was getting at the opposition,go ultra defensive get humped, the team lack fight, seem totally confused that we flood the midfield against rubbish
SPL teams, and pass the ball slowly and all around the defence befor just lumping the ball forward, even when we win a free kick in the opposition half,it is a slow square pass then another and another, and usually end up passing back to the keeper, our corners are crap, even when we have specialists like mulgrew and commons on the park, johansen or armstrong take the corners,or even some times griffiths,so our only striker isn,t even in the box,Deila is a total tosser, but so is the board that appointed him and have not got the guts to sack him

We have lost or 2 best defenders
Had several injuries to key men and had several more under perform this season.
Hardly suprising we have not improved on last season given all of that no?

I know these things have no relevance in FIFA 16 Monti but in the real world these things have a rather large hand in things on the park.

You know but choose to dismiss it all the same.
To me you see this is where the problems lay this season before a ball was kicked.
The rest of the issues regarding injuries and poor form have caused the Manager no end of difficulties which again are dismissed as clamber to have him sacked.
Been the same all season Monti regardless of where we sit in the League.
Unless you change the record I am highly unlikely to change my response.

no matter that we lose players,we should be much better off,we are playing fuck all,a one team league and we might lose it to a side made up of lower league journeymen, the manager(or is it crazed fitness fanatic) is a total fanny,we even employ his sister as a trainer, funny how our players take so long to get fit,we are a laughing stock, and are making scum like Stewart and the rest of the diddies on the bbc very happy, how many season books will be sold next season

One criticism aimed at the manager is a lack of strength in dealing with players. At this point, he should have stopped the tail from wagging the dog. If players weren’t going to do it his way, they should have been removed in January. At the time, the diary noted that this laissez faire approach could well cost him his job.

The problem for the manager in the above scenario is that he does not have the final say on when and how players will be removed.
Players will only be removed when PL deems it to be commercially viable.
This is the type of situation that arises in a conflict of interest between the plc and the football department.

Spot on Deadhead 67 but the players aren’t learning. Surely they don’t need someone bawling from the side to tell them to up their game or even up the pace to force a mistake. When we try to up the pace it’s us who make the mistakes. The players are not good enough anymore to take instruction or carry it out wilfully or not.
Tribute to Caesar on Wednesday showed him shaking both fists on the park on many an occasion.Brown claps the crowd at the end…what was that about ? And another thing…why was the musical tribute to Dalglish (his 65th birthday ffs ! ) showed still pictures in the hoops but plenty action .for Liverpool
Rebus67…can’t even soothe the pain with some Rioja ( Lent ) but plan to leather that Faustino on Easter Sunday. Good shout by you earlier.
