Celtic Diary Thursday December 3: Advice for Those Heading to Turkey

From the official website:

At this time, Celtic have received sufficient tickets for this fixture for our travelling support. Celtic Ticket Services will manage the sale of our tickets. Please only purchase tickets from Celtic Ticket Services.

  • For spectator safety reasons, please do not travel to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium unless you have an official ticket for this fixture located within the Celtic support.
  • Buses dedicated to this match for visiting fans will drop spectators close to the entry gate.
  • Please note that the perimeter entry point to the stadium is restricted with limited space. See picture below. PLEASE GIVE YOURSELF SUFFICIENT TIME TO ACCESS THE STADIUM.
  • Ticket checks will take place on the approaches to the away turnstiles.
  • Turnstiles are approached via narrow enclosed gangways. Again, please give yourself sufficient time to enter. PLEASE BE PATIENT, IT IS IMPORTANT TO AVOID CONGESTION IN THIS AREA.
  • An E Ticket System is in use.
  • All visiting fans can expect to be searched on entry by uniformed security staff and police.
  • Visiting turnstiles will be open from 5pm.
  • Celtic supporters are located in the Migros Tribune, Block G. This area is totally enclosed by fencing and served by one vomitory for access/egress.
  • There will also be an area for approved banners to be displayed. Banners positively supporting football are welcomed.
  • Alcohol is prohibited within the stadium and smoking is not permitted.

The club will be laying on buses to help supporters get to the ground, as they have also advised against using the Metro system, largely due to a pipe bomb exploding in one earlier this week.

Celtic Football Club are arranging match day bus return transfers for our fans from the Dolmabahce Palace to the match and back to the Dolmabahce Palace.

At this time, buses are scheduled to leave at 1600hrs with fans asked to meet at 1530hrs at the collection point. Please monitor our website for further updates.

There is also a section entitled “tips “

Generally crime levels are low, but street robbery and pick-pocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul. Only carry what you need and leave spare cash and valuables in hotel safety deposits

In Turkey it is an offence to insult the Turkish nation or the national flag, or to deface or tear up currency.

Smoking is prohibited on public transport and in other public areas like stadiums, playgrounds, cafes, bars, and restaurants. You can be fined if you are caught smoking in a designated smoke-free area.

We recommend that you purchase bottled water to drink which is readily available from local shops, hotels etc.

We recommend that you should try not to travel alone to the stadium and avoid displaying Celtic flags/ shirts in public places.

Avoid Kadikoy and Bagdat Street which are the home suburbs for Fenerbahce supporters.

I’ve also addd a section called tips;

At least there will be a police preence, and they can’t possibly be as bloody useless as Police Scotland when it comes to keeping supporters safe.

In fact, they put you in a great big cage.

fenerbahce visiting fans section 1

Travelling abroad with Celtic is always an experience, and this particular trip looks like being no different.

Back at the ranch, and Davie Hay, former player and manager, has been handed a job at Celtic. Unfitunately, for those of us who remember his playing and management skills, its with Celtic Pools.

He’s chuffed;

“I’m delighted to be involved again with my club Eric Riley spoke to me a while back and through him I was offered the position and I’m grateful for that.

“It’s different to what I’ve done for the club before but just to be involved with Celtic is great.

“I still come to the games regularly and I have an interest in the Academy as well because my grandson just joined this season but I know how well it’s all run with Chris McCart at the top all the way down to St Ninian’s High School in Kirkintilloch.

“I’d say it’s the best in Scotland, if not Britain, and hopefully over time we’ll get more players coming through.”

Hay was also a very succesful scout for Celtic during the noneties, and here’s hoping ronny asks him if he’s still got his contacts book. Whilst I’m all in favour of bringing through our own, at a recent meeting in Celtic Park, the head of retail observed that shirt sales were down, due largely to a lack of marquee signings. My suggestion of Stephen Ireland wearing number 32, or James MacLean didn’t seem to be taken seriously.

But you never know.

Hay had a knack of bringing in players who rapidly became icons, so it might be an idea to see if he can do it again. The ones we’ve got are , well, hopeless, and have cost the club a bloody fortune in signing donkeys, which has fortunately been offset by giving Southampton that free season book.

Neil O’Donnell, the owner of the hoops bar, has told STV of the horrific time he endured at the hands of Ajax fans before last weeks Europa League game;

“I’ve lost five or six hours of memory from the whole night. The whole thing was over in two minutes as far as I know. They were mindless morons. We’re not going to call them Ajax fans.

“It took everyone by surprise. It was an absolute rammy. A bottle or glass was thrown in straight away. One of the other customers who is a bit of a regular got a very bad beating.”

Police have been criticised for a lack of presence in the area, despite trouble the last time the dutch side were in town.

Detective inspector Colin Hailstones said: “It would appear that this disturbance took place when a large group of men, described as being dressed in black with hoods and scarves covering their faces, tried to gain access to some of the pubs in the Gallowgate and started to challenge patrons within.

“This then developed and people spilled on to the street where the assaults took place. We have been checking CCTV in the area and have already spoken to people who were there at the time as part of the investigation for which there is a dedicated team off officers involved.

“People may think they have got away with it, but just because you may not have been arrested at the time doesn’t mean you wont be identified and caught. “Any information can be passed to officers at London Road Police office via 101.”

Just think, if his men had actually been there, where they were supposed to be, they could have filmed them, or kettled them, or even arrested one or two of them at the time.

A spokesman for their Rapid Reaction force said they hadn’t seen any signs of trouble;

However, they did mention that they would assess the way they dealt with football supporters, and will be trialing a new system against Hamilton on Saturday.

January is just around the corner, and already the scouts are busy checking out what they can blow this windows budget on. Two names mentioned are Michael O’Halloran, whose father is a coach at Celtic , and Graham Cummins, the two St. Johnstone forwards.

To be fair to these two, they have done very well this season, but this time round we should give the Scottish market a miss. There’s already a lot of work to be done with the current crop, and maybe a wee bit f experience is needed this time to help with the players on the park.

Elsewhere, and a furious Mark Warburton has expressed his anger at all of these stories in the press linking him with other jobs;

Council teams to assess damage to Ibrox Stadium

fabric following safety concerns and match delay

Oh dear, makes me wonder if those stories about asking to rent Hampden were true…..

The man from the cooncil said;

The responsibility for safety within a sports ground lies with the club that holds the safety certificate.

“Therefore the decision on any necessary actions required during a matchday rest with the club, who can also liaise as required with representatives from Police Scotland in attendance.

“The council has been in dialogue with the club as to the nature of the incident that occurred and is awaiting a formal report from them.”

Waiting for a report from them ?

In a bit of a rush today, so i’ll leave you with a missing words question…from the North Star, about a case in Inverness…

Morning Ralph,
I don’t actually want Celtic to go to Istanbul at this time, not the team or the fans.
Do others feel the same?

Taking a chance for a 90 minute game of football is just nonsense.
We are out anyway, why take the risk……and it is a risk.
Not as risky as a trip to Tynecastle, but you get my point.

Ralph I asked yesterday if anyone was aware of what action Celtic have taken surrounding the violence in the Gallowgate, I’ll ask again?
Have we done anything?

Absolute wow KTF. What was it Monti said? Nurse?? 8points last year. 2 this year. But we’re playing better this year? Ffs mate seriously. It seems that the guys wanting him to stay are clutching at straws with reasons to stick with him whilst the people against present facts!! We played ok in Amsterdam and for 45mins against fenerbache. I will try on these carefully chosen words. Warsaw Maribor Malmö molde

KTF

Reply to  Bgbhoy

You quoting the number of points between the years does nothing only to illustrate my point that it’s all about results with you? Do you not remember the games against Astra and Zagreb at Parkhead last year? We were absolutely pumped rotten by Zagreb especially but only clinical finishing and Craig Gordon got us the results. Same away to Red Bull. Bear in mind that Ajax and Fenerbache are plenty better than those two teams. And if you’re telling me we didn’t deserve something from the Ajax game last week then you’re as short sighted and biased as I suspect you are
The problem with presenting facts is you only present the ones that suit you and they don’t tell the full story. I’m not saying I’m happy with everything at Celtic at the moment, farrrrrrrr from it but I’m willing to look beyond results and look for improvements in performance and I can see plenty of examples of such

we deserved to win last week? hmmmm dont think so… theres a big difference between should win and deserving to win… we played well in austria last year…. we got what we deserved last week, NOTHING. the performances in europe this year have been nothing short of EMBARASSING… do you remember the games against the mighty malmo and molde…. playing badly and winning is the makings of a good team…. playing badly and getting gubbed is the making of a poor team and clueless manager….

bgbhoy

and i couldnt care less if we win every game 10-9 playing poorly as long as we win!!!

KTF

Reply to  bgbhoy

And herein lies the problem! What a statement to make. Sometimes you play badly and win but that will obviously never last. You’re effectively just relying on luck like we did in the Europa League last year. I can state for a fact that our performances against Fenerbache and Ajax were an improvement on the performances against Astra and Zagreb last year. And let’s not forget that they are much better teams.

KTF

I would say they tried their hearts out against Ajax twice and Fenerbache and were only let down by individual mistakes and poor finishing…..and I would also say they are better sides than us.

I agree with KTF on this the Molde performances were poor by any standard.
That has more to do with the players own performances than the Manger IMO.
Too manyKEY men just no at it this Season for what ever reason.
Form ,fitness or mental approach it is down to them to raide their game regardless of who they are playing.
But naw let’s just keep pointing the fikle finger of blame at the Manager.

Whilst I don’t care about Stokes and Wakaso I’ll concede that there does seem to be a problem between management and players, particularly Collins. Wouldn’t break my heart to see him leave, especially given some of the sh1te he’s come out with in press conferences recently.

CeciltheLion

It’s not Collins who’s got the ultimate responsibility. That’s Deila’s area. Get him and his management spoofery out and the players, who see right through his crap, will start to look like players again (except Boyata who’s never been a player in his life).

bgbhoy

im going to suggest that ronny is not in control….. why would commons go racing past ronny in molde and start ranting at collins? who has the final say? the whole set up is a shambles…. a defensive coach who cant teach defending an assistant manager who is detested and smug and a manager who does not know how to win games in europe and who refuses to learn from mistakes…. to win me over we must start to blow teams away domestically and for johansen not to start for the rest of the season… he is garbage!!! the lad allan should be in from the start!!!

KTF you are accepting poor performances and poor results.. why woud it be a problem to accept winning and not playing well??

KTF

I’m accepting good performances (don’t get me wrong, with exceptions such as Malmo away and the Molde games) on the understanding that eventually results will come. I won’t accept winning and not playing well cos it’s patently obvious that sort of scenario can’t last forever.

please, tell me what games i missed… i was in amsterdam and at the 3 home games… when did they play really well

i would say amsterdam was ok nithing more, a game that a draw was snatched from the jaws of victory

KTF
Reply to  bgbhoy

I would say we would all have taken a draw against Ajax before the game had started and the draw was snatched only due to Izzy’s stupidity (individual mistake I spoke about).
As for the home games, I agree against Molde we were muck, second half especially. I would argue that we were unlucky not to be a goal or two up on them before they scored which would have changed the game but ok, pure sh1te 2nd half.
I don’t think that was the case against Ajax and Fenerbache. I thought we played well, against two teams with, on paper, far better players than ours and did enough to win both games. You’re not telling me we didn’t create enough chances to beat Ajax? And remember we were only done by a sucker punch at the end. Efe sold the buns v Fenerbache and ok you can say he shouldn’t have been on the pitch (and I would have sold him months ago) but that wasn’t reflective of the performance of the team
I think you use results more than you should to quatify how we’re doing. If we played like we did against Zagreb last year we’d lose more than we won. Similarly, if we played like we did vs Fenerbache or Ajax, we’d win more than lose. But games are often won and lost on fine margins and we just didn’t land on the right side of those margins in this campaign

Bgbhoy

Would of took a draw in Ajax before the game but then thy where there for a beating. And the 2nd half against fenerbache was non existent. Molde and Malmö I all I will remember when I think of Ronnys team. Not seen us have a really goo performance in Europe under him. In 2 years. Ad that’s including 10 games no win in the Europa. 11 come next week and then one more game away from the Europa leagues worst ever sequence of results. Celtic!?

Thanks for the clarification, Charlie, but you missed one…”the Treble means nothing”. I thought it was only the Loan Rangers and the SMSM punting that to ensure a dodgy team in the top league and, if they survive long enough to get there, you can bet the same people will begin trotting out “Historic Treble” eulogies and how it is the benchmark for a top team etc, etc. I cannot believe any Celtic fan would think the Treble means nothing…big Jock would not only be turning in his grave, he would be greeting.

Bleat Bleat Bleat!!!!
The Treble isn’t important!
Believe it or not I managed to come to that conclusion all by myself.
It’s based on a few things, mainly if Celtic are in the CL every season, the club can bring in around £20-25m per season, this will/should allow the club to bring in a standard of player or players who can give us a greater chance of getting into the CL groups the following season, so on and so on.
It also brings in revenues and fills the stadium, catering, t.v. etc.
Celtic being in the CL also dangles a carrot in the face potential signings.
Not only that, our very own CEO Peter Lawwell claims we are a ” Champions league club ” and makes qualification a big deal each summer.

This is the platform I want Celtic to be showcased on, it will help fulfil our potential.

As for the ‘ TREBLE ‘…I have never heard so much shite from a manager as I did from Ronny Deila on a what seemed like a weekly basis last season, ” we all want the treble “…..every fucking week?
It got embarrassing, fuck all to do with the media, just Deila puting pressure on the team and pissing off some of our own fans and definitely the opposition teams and support.

Yes it’s great to see Celtic go walkabout at Hampden with a silver trophy with green and white ribbons flowing from it, do you think I don’t feel that?
But please, please don’t insult me by suggesting the treble is a great thing, it isn’t.
I see Celtic fighting Barcelona and Manchester utd and beating them, the team and club getting worldwide recognition for these achievements, that IS what floats my boat.
I’ll take a treble any year, it hasn’t been won that much by Celtic and it would be an excellent season.
But don’t try and tell me it’s the be all and end all!

Winning the League is the most important goal at the start of every season, the two cups are secondary, though great to have. What I and many others are pointing out is to win in Scotland is all well and good, but the only way we can see tangible proof that we are progressing and I would imagine that is what everybody wants to see, is results and performances in Europe. No great mystery to that and what we have witnessed in this seasons campaign has not shown any progression whatsoever.
