Celtic Diary Wednesday December 2: Compare and Contrast

I think it’s safe to say the club is in a period of transition.

The now official policy of rearing our own ( and I’ll try to resist the urge to put a picture of Frankie Howerd here in order to gain a cheap laugh

frankie howerd

well, I tried ) will see a few hiccoughs as we go along.

There will be peaks and troughs, but the idea is to support the team through thick and thin. That doesn’t mean we don’t have the right to question one or two things, however, and it also means that none of us will always be roight, and none of us will always be wrong.

Okay , there might be a few exceptions, but you get the point.

We’re going to keep an eye on how the young team performs in the Premier League Cup and in Europe over the next few weeks, but it’s interesting to see the mentality of them as well.

Earlier this week, John Collins decided he hadn’t said enough stupid things this year, and announced  that young Keiran Tierney was already a £5m defender, which brought poor Stevie Fulton flashbacks that would have made a Vietnam veteran wake up screaming.

Tierney , however, has his feet firmly on the ground.

“It’s a compliment you take well, it’s good for him to come out and say that. It doesn’t get said a lot about young people, so it’s positive.

“I was surprised by when I first saw it, I didn’t expect it and it was my dad that showed me.

“My team-mates haven’t mentioned it but I’m sure they will now.

“I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, I need to keep my feet on the ground. I’m still young, it’s still early doors and I need to keep working hard and get more appearances under my belt.”

“The rule at Celtic is the youngest have to clean the boots.

“I need to keep working hard and hopefully one day I can be in the
first-team dressing room.

“I don’t know when it will change but that’s all good. Everything that’s happened recently is hard to take in. I just see myself as still being a Celtic fan.

“It’s brilliant. I need to appreciate every moment I have with the first team and make the most of it.

“I’ve worked so hard to play for Celtic and have supported them all my life, so it’s a dream to play for them.”

The Scottish Cup draw threw up a tie at Stranraer for the Celts, and Tierney knows its a step on the way to a rare treble;

“The Treble is the aim for everyone at Celtic. We’ll take a tie against Stranraer, we’ll take anything, we just need to go with the right mindset and prepare right for the game and we should get the result.”

Note the use of the phrase “the right mindset “

And that brings us to Anthony Stokes.

At one time, Stokes was a prolific goalscorer, 14 goals in 16 games in the SPL for Falkirk earned him a £2m move to Sunderland in 2006, where he didn’t do so well, in fact his only goal was eight years ago today, a winner against Derby,  before being handed a chance to make a name for himself at Celtic.

Alongside Gary Hooper, he was part of a fearsome unit that carved through defences, and he was never shy of putting in a bit of effort.

Then, under Ronny Deila, it all appears to have gone wrong.

There are stories that his attitude is questionable, his professionalism non existent, and his sojourns to Ireland taking longer and longer to recover from.

Theres no doubt he can play, but he doesn’t seem to want to.

Then came his petulant tweet prior to the Inverness game, where he moaned about being forced to head up to the far north to just sit in the stand, receiving only thousands of pounds in compensation.

Since then, he has kind of slipped even further down the managers christmas card list, and has apparently been fined two weeks wages and sent home from the Lennoxtown facility when he turned up yesterday.

Perhaps he would have been better off getting rat arsed and falling asleep outside a city centre bar….

It may be as Stokes has finally exhausted the managers patience, and it may be that this is just the latest in a long line of incidents that have isolated Stokes from the managers plans, but you cannot have one rule for one, and one rule for another.

Scott Brown , as captain, has a responsibility to represent the club. Those pictures of him lying sutably refreshed in the gutter did the club and the player no good, but Deila chose to overlook it.

One rule for one, one for another.

Kris commons stamped his feet, waved his arms and shouted his mouth off after he was substituted.

No action from the management.

Stokes only tweeted his thoughts, not clever, but not exactly a massive offence.

This is where we need to compare and contrast.

Brown gets away with misdemeanours, Commons can say what he wants on television, but Stokes gets a fine for tweeting…

Tierney loves cherishes every minute of being involved at Celtic, and is prepared to clean boots and bide his time.

Stokes can’t be arsed and just moans when he’s left out. but it’s hard not to feel a little sympathy for him when you compare and contrast Deila’s response to other public misdemeanours.

Commons shouts and moans live on television, nothing happens.

Brown is found in a gutter and his picture plastered all over the papers. nothing happens.

Stokes sent a tweet.

Interestingly, Neil Lennon used to argue with fans on social media, so maybe thats why he thought it was okay.

A “source ” close to the player told the Daily Mail;

“Anthony is surprised and disappointed Celtic have taken this action. All he wants is to play football for his club.

“He doesn’t care about the wages, he wants to play football and make a contribution and that was the point of the Tweets he later apologised for publicly.

“He has scored 59 goals in 107 starts for Celtic and feels frustrated he can’t get in the team.

“When Kris Commons indulged in a very public show of dissent towards Ronny and John Collins during the Molde game recently he was spared a suspension. Anthony finds it surprising his actions merit a suspension when that didn’t.

“The player recently became a father for the second time and has to think of his family here.

“Football is a short career and he wants to play games. When he is not playing, he is not contributing and his value decreases. That’s his concern.’

“It’s about reacting to your values. I will talk to him about it. What’s important for Stokesy is that he has to show the work first before he speaks. If you do that you have a future.”

A managers job is to keep everyone happy, and keep everyone in line.

But he has to have rules, and they must be the same for everyone, otherwise it will all grind to a halt sooner rather than later.

Still sure we you could win the treble if you were in charge ? Or anyone could do it ?

There is obviously an undercurrent at the club which needs to be addressed. and it appears to  be one of the managers own making.

Deila may be guilty of treating one player different from another, but you could say that each player treats the club differently from each other, and so somewhere we need to strike a happy medium

That should wipe that grin off her face.

The youngsters want to play, and maybe one or two of the older players are working their ticket, or perhaps afraid that they are about to be thrown out of their comfort zone.

That is obvious, and all eyes will be on the manager to see how he deals with it when the window opens next month.

But whatever he does, it will be the making or breaking of his future at Celtic.

In January, he needs to decide who he wants to keep, who he wants to let go, and stick to his guns.

Time to stop the tail wagging the dog…

Elsewhere, there was drama at a first division game last night when supporters were evacuated from their seats at Ibrox due to a fault in the “stadium fabric “.

It’s public knowledge that a certain level of investment is required to bring the old stadium up to modern standards, and this time, where it appeared that several parts of the roof had come loose and were hanging precariously over peoples heads, means surely the problem can no longer be ignored.

Embedded image permalink

Especially as we know that a previous owner of the club had sought expert advice on structural matters…

Embedded image permalink

Speaking of matters at Ibrox, the rumours of interest in their bright young manager (another one ? -Ed ) from Fulham won’t go away.

Though it seems that Warbs himself might.

Level % have their press release ready to go if Warburton does;

“We wish Mark all the best, but his family lives in london and he felt it was putting too much strain on them for him to live and work in Glasgow in what has become a hostile environment with the constant abuse he was getting from those who do not feel the club has been punished enough.

However, his position at the club was largely as a figurehead, and the real work was done on the ground by David Weir, who will now take over as manager, and continue to take the club in the right direction ”

  weir

We hear that an influential lady has heard that the liquidators of the original  Rangers has heard they are seeking leave to appeal the decision which means they owe her money,

but her mood altered when she was told of their likelihood of success.

And her joy knew no bounds when she was informed of a subliminal message from Mike ashley, who is currently involved in trying to get his money back from Dave King…

Embedded image permalink

King , of course, is desperately trying to raise the funds needed to avoid Ashley going to court to get repaid, and the SFA may well have told him to get it sorted, largely because they are kind of implicated having deemed the man who may yet spend Christmas in jail on account of being on licence for contempt of court when he appears in court next week charged with, er contempt of court, to be fit and proper.

We hear a few potential investors were asked to a secret meeting , where he sat round the table with them to outline his needs. However, they  all responded in the same way when King asked them for a sub, and he was left sitting by himself.

I think the difference between brown and stokes is that brown is doing what he is asked both on and off the pitch and is a positive influence on the team, this makes it easier to defend him when something like the Edinburgh incident happens. Stokes on the other hand is clearly not doing what he is asked to do on or off the pitch and i’d bet hes a negative influence ob the team. Maybe im biased as I have never rated stokes and was gutted when Neil lennon gave him a new contract. I would happily be ridofstokes asap.

I agree, Stokes is a very difficult player to watch in a Celtic jersey. Very like Aiden McGeady when his head got too big, every mistake was someone else’s fault. The number of times (and Tannadice was the most recent) I’ve seen Stokes turn and vent on his team mates and miserably stroll back toward the halfway line. Now I don’t mind a Roy Keane type balling players out and urging them on; Stokes is not that type. A moaning wee pr!ck who we’re well shot of. Good as a pair, and showed flashes out left with Izzy, but not part of our future.
Happy to eat my words when he’s proved me wrong with all conquering performances in the Championship or wherever he ends up. Ask your mate Gary what life is like after Celtic, and maybe you’ll wish you’d put it in when you had the chance.

The difference between Brown and Stokes,is that brown has been played in his proper position.Stokes was stuck out on the wing,as the idiot in charge won,t play 2 up front,he is still at it with Armstrong playing wide ,and not in the middle.

Im not saying stokes is a world beater but people on forums saying stokes is pish have short memories , he had a wonderful partnership with hooper and played well on the left. This tweet wasnt the best idea but dont you think when our captain can be pictured slumped in a street before the cup final and nothing is done, commons publicly on national tv swears at and berates the coaching staff and is just given a telling off, our striker is caught on camera and cautioned for making racist remarks and nothing is done. Stokes sends a couple of tweets that arent even abusive and is suspended. I think this looks like a case of you havnt been playing. Your not as important as the other three and i dont like you anyway so il hang you out to dry. Complete double standards , the whole situation stinks in my opinion.

Firstly I like Stokes, but he doesn’t fit into the way Deila wants to play. I’m not defending Deila because in my opinion he is not up to the job.

But do you really think that they got in the bus to Inverness not knowing at least a day (or possibly two) who was playing in the team and who was in the bench? It’s not a Sunday league team manager waiting to see who turns up hungover before telling the guys who is playing.

It’s like two kids saying “my dad’s bigger than your dad”. Stokes will not win this and will be in his way in January. I don’t think what the club ie Deila has done is right, but I have a feeling that ithe whole situation may have been engineered by Stimes and/or his agent to ensure Stokes gets away in January with a view to scraping into Ireland’s Euro’s squad.

Maybe I’m just cynical.

I have always liked Stokes as a player to me he is an honest player who gives his best when he plays regardless of form.
I can understand his frustration he was part of a decent partnership with Hoper, played well out on the left in the wide supporting role and can produce a bit of quality at times.
He has sat and watched Boerrigter,Armstrong and Mackay-Steven fail to make that wide left role their own yet he has proven playing with Izzy they had a good understanding up the left side?
Couple that with the fact he tracks back and puts a shift in then he must feel he’s been pushed out in the cold?
That said it was out of order but I feel he in doing so is working his ticket out the door.
I think Deila needs to have a clear out there are obviously players causing issues at Celtic behind the scenes and this may account for the no show at Molde when let’s face it none of them bar 1 or 2 turned up.

When you hear RD saying “you’ve got to be introspective”, “you’ve got to work hard every day” and “you’ve got to be humble” it never seem to get any traction with the SMSM or even CFC blogs. Then you see KT doing his first media gig, on his own representing Glasgow Celtic, showing signs of being introspective (JC’s compliment) and saying that he just wants to work hard everyday all while being incredibly humble. It makes me think MMMnnnn ‘maybe’ there might be something to this RD fella. LG has shown these characteristics all season also, but what I was thinks was, if this philosophy is adopted by the whole club top to bottom, I can only see positives in the future for the Great Glasgow Celtic. Why shouldn’t we be able to produce our own homegrown talent that one-day they will hold their own, with any company on a football pitch. HH

Is KT one of the first off this new conveyor belt where the young lads are fulltime ie go to a Celtic nominated school and train before/after studies? Maybe I’m making this up but was sure this was introduced a few years back.
KT seems mature and intelligent, perhaps this well rounded approach improving not on playing skills is working in terms of attitude and humilty.

Gerry,
If Izaguirre was on top form, Tierney would be away out on loan.
Don’t give Deila too much credit for playing him.
Same with Henderson, never put a foot wrong for Celtic yet he is at Hibs on loan.
Johansen however, get’s a shirt most weeks….and gloves and hair band??

Deila isn’t a developer….he is a bluffer!

Charlie Saiz

Henderson has 16 games under his belt at Hibs this Season already I doubt very much he would have had half that at Celtic given the amount of AMF we have vying for places.
As for Tierney was excellent for the Development squad and rightly got his chance the form of Izzy is neither here or there because a blind man could see Tierney has the tools to do the job.
Bitton has improved,Griffiths attitude has improved as has his play,Forrest looks like he’s getting back to the form that got him thee in the first place and aso Janko pre injury was making inroads under him.
I would say the jury is still out on Boyata but he looks more relaxed and confident.

It’s a Frank McAvennie line ( pun intended) up, Mark Mcghee, Andy Walker and Joe Miller.

Quality strike force!

If Ronny Deila was manager he would have only played one of them tho.

I don’t think Anthony Stokes should have tweeted what he did but at the same time, we are now witnessing a manager who clearly has different rules for different players, this is a sign of weakness from Deila.
I can’t see the Celtic dressing room being unified when the squad know they are being dealt with on a ‘ who you are ‘ mentality.

A manager ( particularly last season) on a weekly basis banging on about winning the treble, his assistant firing up the opposition with Ill thought insults and demeaning quotes, captain lying pished in the street before a cup final….
Commons very publicly berating the management without punishment?

I hear the ticking of a clock……

Hi Bondibrian,
Positives about Ronny Deila?

Let’s take it back to the start, When Ronny was announced as or new manager, I was initially disappointed that we didn’t get an experienced European manager in.
I got over that when I heard Ronny tell us about what he wanted to bring to Celtic, the style of football that was promised and all the trimmings.
I basically bought into it.
As I left Paradise at full time against Maribor, I was disgusted with how he set out a Celtic side, at home with EVERYTHING that was at stake that night.
It was all there for him, the away goal, the full house and Ronny set to become the new King of Parkhead…..
HE SHAT IT……No turning back for me, I want him gone yesterday.

Positives? NONE!

I am not so sure that there are double standards at play here.

Stokes has been reprimanded for turning up hungover or drunk at training on more than one occasion. Has RD stated that his recent fine was a result of his tweet or did he just turned pished to training one time too many?

There is no doubt that he has contributed to some memorable victories over the years, but if the manager has set rules on fitness for work then they should be abided by.

delbhoy

I agree john , the orher thing that puzzles me is all these players that are brought in and not played , we keep getting the same lines from ronny , he knows what he has to work on , he knows what we want him to do , he has to work every day and be humble (what the feck has being humble got to be with playing football) is ibrahimovic humble? No but id bloody take him up front in a second! . These players are getting signed and then told your not good enough for me, which begs the question why were they signed! Cifti is todays example, if ronny clearly didnt think he was good enough , why did he sign him? If inded he did. For me day after day we have all these issues and questions and they all seem to stem from ronny delia

Stokes’s attitude sucks. its been said already, but there is no other reason for him being treated differently. Brown and Commons both care, and demonstrate that (albeit to different degrees) on and off the park.
I don’t think the same can be said of Stokes. Now its fair to say if he had a different manager he might care more…but the mettle of a man is how he behaves when conditions are against him. Stokes acts like a wean.
I think the perfect parallel is Griffiths – he came in, full of pish, thought he was the bollocks – many of us thought he was overrated and not the answer – and was immediately embroiled in some unsavoury business with the singing. He’s been talked to, and he has got his head down and completely changed his approach to playing for Celtic. He may still not be “the answer” but he is doing everyhting he can to prove he is. Long may it continue.

Favouritism. What does it matter that the manager doesn’t like you? The team comes first, no? Are you best for team on the day, yes, then in you go. Everyone is fond of quoting Jock Stein re shrinking shirts. What do they think of a very talented player in the stand and Carlton Cole getting a game. The latter looked like a member of yesteryear’s team at a charity match. Of late I’ve thought Johanssen shouldn’t be on the field at all. Which leads me to fitness, a big thing with RD. Stefan’s excuse “I have a sore back…”. Mulgrew looked sluggish and not ready for the first team. On he goes, injured. Brown same thing. Forest similar. It’s maybe not fair but when I watch good Euro sides we just do not compare in fitness. Light years of difference. Who is managing our loanees? Someone in the financial dept I assume? I want Ronnie to succeed but he seems to me to be digging a hole for himself. I for one am not ready to start over with a new manager so c’mon Ronnie get it together.

People forget Malmo (aye, I know they are only a lowly Scandinavian team) hadn’t been beaten at home in Europe for 4 years prior to Celtic playing them, put Salzburg out of the Champions League twice in the previous 2 years, and they have a support that gets right the team for the full 90 minutes, not only when things are going well. I think you are unable to see past the Deila Out agenda myself and are unable to concede that these factors could well be hindering any progress we made last Season under him.
Chuck in the loss of Central Pairing of Denaayer and Van Dijk too and I think it’s a relevant factor as to why defensively we have been shocking at times this Season.

Don’t know whether you noticed but he changed things at the weekend?
Man Marking on set pieces
Went with 2 strikers after the 2nd goal
He’s had too alter the approach this Season the Injuries and loss of form of key personnel had forced that on him.
But naw let’s just focus purely on results in Europe and shout”Ronny Out” every time we lose a game or drop some points.

Don’t believe the papers as that photo of Scott Brown was taken in May, marking the anniversary of his sisters passing, at the end of the season, not during, that’s how low they will stoop to try to paint anything positive about Celtic….

So why did Brown admit ” it was a mistake ” then?

Maybe the media bought him drink all night and sat him down outside?

After Commons unacceptable outburst , I wouldn’t be surprised if the club gathered players together and told them no more bad behaviour or dissent would go unpunished .
In any event Stokes knew he was existing on a shaky peg after his attack on Elvis
Not only is he likely to be jailed but he has put Celtic into disrepute and couldn’t afford to step out of line again .
I am amazed at the number of so called Celtic fans who are supporting Stokes ahead of Ronny and Celtic .
With supporters like these people Celtic would be better without .

Charlie why is delia all of a sudden changing formations and personel to suit cole who lets face it will be here a season , and not a long term answer. Why not go to a two for citi who as monti says hasnt played so how he can be judged god only knows . I would ber twenty quid to the trust that if cifti had a run of six to ten games you would see an entirely diffrent player.

i remember debating with my old man when maloney was here that he could be a great player , he like a lot of people are saying about cifti was telling me na maloneys a dud , hasnt got it. I remember there was talk of him being sold to aberdeen, then circumstances were that wee strachan threw him in for a few starts and the dud became player of the year. I mind mulgrew in similar circumstances. Some people just have to play and cant show it in cameos

Monti

Delbhoy,
It is only fair that a player is judged by playing him in consecutive games, be that 6,7,8 or 9 games on the bounce.
I may be wrong but did it not take Henrik Larsson ( for it is God) 6 games to get his first Celtic goal?

Most people who start a new job get a twelve week trial period, why? Because it gives the employer a decent timescale to make a judgement.
Here tho we have people ( including Ralph.) calling Nadir a ” Diddy “?

Poor show that.

Charlie Saiz

I agree I am fairly confident there is a player in Ciftci he has ability he has shown that at United.
I could see him in the hole behind Griffiths as he can hold the ball up well and has good strength to hold players off.

Deila had an opportunity to try something as we were ahead in the game and fairly comfortable.
By keeping Griffiths on he had the goal threat on the Park so to me it made sense to have a look at Cole.
He should have buried that header from McGregors cross and perhaps a few games in he would have.

Damian Smyth

Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven were the two outstanding young Scottish footballers a year or so ago, how much is our ” developing manager ” getting out of these two players?
Most Celtic fans were delighted to get these two signings through the front door, so what is happening now, I’m not seeing much from Stuart and Gary’s arse is parked on the bench?
Mackay-Steven looks like he has lost his confidence in particular, this guy should be driving at defences in the Hoops, bursting his gut, why is his confidence gone?
Nadir Ciftci was a real threat when he played at Tannadice, he was always in the box and great at taking people on with some nifty close control? When is he going to get a fair crack at the whip with us?
What would that have done for his confidence on Sunday, watching a clearly overweight Carlton Cole get on the park before him?

Charlie Saiz, is right to point out Liam Henderson has 16 starts so far for Hibs this season, fair enough, but I was disappointing to see Liam go out on loan in the first place.
Another player, Logan Bailly, when is this guy going to get his chance?, start of the season I thought Craig Gordon was decidedly average and cost us a few goals with his fumbling and indecision.
How do we know we have a capable back up keeper if he never plays?
What harm would it do giving Bailly a home game, once a month?
Does Gordon really need to play every single game? Why?

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  Monti

I agree on Bailly we should be rotating the keepers this will keep them both sharp and both keen.
Lenny did the same with Zaluska for 2 Seasons hardly played him under Forster.
Armstrong like Brown and Lustig has not started the same Season well in my opinion this can happen second Season but he has plenty time to improve and I believe he will.
Mackay-Steven had his ups and downs at United form wise I think he is the type that needs a wee arm round him to get the best out of him.
I believe that is the way Deila operates if you watch his lecture on Management.
Well worth a watch.

Ronny Deila Has given big Ciftci the same chance previous players have had by several different managers at Celtic.

Wee Gordon:Derek Riordan,Dion Dublin,Jeremie Aliadiere,Ben Hutchinson.

Lenny:fridjonnson,Bangura,Lassad,Miku,Pukki,Murphy,Balde.

Maybe they some could have made it given a run in the team. but many were just pish signings.

Correct monti , good point about henrik , i hope cifti does get a run , he was always a player i liked coming up against us. I felt sorry for pukki shuggy mind he had that wee run for ronny when he scored a few but again i thought he was one that was a number ten type player.

with this new formation managers theese days are adopting , how many fantastic strikers wouldnt get in. When i was growing up i always wanted to be the number 10. Roberto baggio, del piero, gullit , rivaldo, stoichkov , raul, bergkamp, cantona to name a few of this type of player, makes you think where they would be in todays game

Tourtenay

I’m just beginning to get the feeling that Celtic employed Ronny as a youth team coach but Ronny walked into the wrong dressing room and the almighty ones said “just leave him and see how he goes”
He is trying his level bestow get the average age of the first team as low as possible so that he is comfortable giving out the instructions, that makers him feel better, you know, in the company of younger players.
Can you imagine a really quality seasoned professional who has played with other seasoned professionals throughout his career, listening to coaches that know what they’re talking about especially regarding defensive systems, midfielders who impose themselves on the game and attackers who put it about with style and panache!!
But then they start listening to Ronnybhoy and they come to the conclusion “I think I’ve walked into the wrong dressing room”

That gells with me, been saying for months Ronnys a development manager, when it comes to the senior players he is out of his depth, also the senior players dont show him any respect. He looks and sounds like he has his favourets, its hardly suprising everyone knew that he was brought in to be no2,i think that P.L. paniced when he thought that Keane was going to get the job.

Mike,
There was a time I would have taken Roy Keane but not so sure now, I loved the man as a player because he was truly world class and a leader of men.
He hasn’t taken that into management….yet, Roy needs to settle down and then a manager may be in him, sometimes Keano comes across as being a bit unstable lol.

I do admire the guy though and maybe one day he will be our manager.

Charlie,
That WAS a great achievement no doubt, but it was done at a minnow of a side where he was in a position to develop without any great pressure. He is now manager of our club where the weight of expectation can, and has, destroyed many in the past. It’s a different kettle of poisson he has to contend with now.

Charlie Saiz

Therein lies the problem Frank.
He can develop players if given the time and backing to do so.
I think the expectations of some far exceed our abilities at times.
Ajax have won 6 major Trophies to our 1 in Europe they are prepared to give their coach time to build from their own.
