Celtic Diary Tuesday October 27: Lord Livingston Out! Now !

As you may have noticed, the governments plan to take even more money from the poor and add to their general misery failed yesterday, as the House Of Lords awoke from it’s slumber and voted to delay the cuts to tax credits, the supplementary wage given to enable business to pay peanuts.

Well, most of them did.

Have a look at who voted to keep the cuts;

Liverpool, Earl Not Content
Livingston of Parkhead, Lord Not Content
Lloyd-Webber, Lord Not Content

Whilst sitting on the board of a club he professes to support, one set up to put food on the tables of the poor, conservative Ian Paul Livingston decided that he thinks it’s better that things should turn full circle and go back to the way they were.

I’m surprised he doesn’t own a firm of chimney sweeps, and is looking to employ some kids to do the insides.

He should be nowhere near our club, and I’m quite sure that if you could find a contact number, you’d let him know that.

Oh, and you could let the club know as well.

The Lord Livingston of Parkhead

Parliamentary

House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW

Tel: 020 7219 5353

Email: contactholmember@parliament.uk

Theres an AGM due.

Is it too late to call for his resignation ?

Keiran Tierney was promoting the Christmas appeal yesterday;

So, Lord Livingston votes to take it away, and we have to give it back.

His arse shouldn’t touch London road on his way out the door and back to the motorway.

Anyhoo,  man of the moment Keiran Tierney has been talking to the papers. And he’s keeping his feet on the ground.

Despite the support calling for his immediate instatement in the first team, and the lynching of long time servant Emilio Izaguirre.

And I thought I was fickle.

Tierney spoke highly of the man he appears to view as his mentor.

“Emilio is a great player. He has played in the Champions League and World Cup so I still have a long way to go.

“He has great experience and he has been great with me.

“I still look up to him and I talk to him at training and he gives me tips.

“It was my fourth start of the season. Emilio has played in big competitions so I still have a long way to go.

“I need to keep on working on all my weaknesses.

“I have had meetings with John Collins and John Kennedy which have been great.

“They tell you the positives and also the negatives you need to work on and I do that after training.

“But I have been absolutely delighted with the faith the manager has put in me.

“He threw me into some big games at such a young age which has been absolutely great.”

Tierney is the first youngster to make the breakthrough solely under Ronny Deila. Hopefully he won’t be rushed. We’ve seen too many of the next big thing tyoe burnt out and playing at a lower level to not understand that maybe a few games in, then a few out, and a gradual introduction to a first team berth is the way to handle this.

He’s realistic enough, and seemingly mature enough, to understand this.

“There are full-backs I model myself on and you can take a part from the top players in the big leagues.

“I looked at Roberto Carlos when I was younger so I try to play the same game as he did, which is obviously attacking.

“He wasn’t afraid to shoot and he was a good defender as well.

“Attacking is a very big part of my armoury, especially the way the manager wants to play.

“But I need to do it for 90 minutes. As you saw yesterday I was kind of tired at the end so I need to get that out of my game and try to last 90 minutes easily.”

If he does that, he’ll be the first Celtic player to do it this season.

The other defender who caught the eye on Sunday was Croatian Jozo Simunovic, who turned in a calm and composed performance hoping to head off Jozo the Bozo taunts.

This rhyming couplet, the type used in terracing songs and chants, which may have been the reason Celtic never signed Noel Hunt, could lead to the sort of tag that was attributed to Rafael Scheidt, although that wsn’t really a rhyme, more a sort of CV.

Anyway, big Jozo seems happier now;

“I feel great to be back. It happened at training and the healing was long but now that is behind me.

“It was very hard to be out. There was nothing I could do about it but I worked really hard to get back. Now I want to show what I can do and help my team as much as I can.”

Short and to the point. The kind of player who does his talking on the park ? Hope so.

Oh, wait. He hasn’t finished. On the Dundee United game he said;

“I don’t think the game against Dundee United was too easy. Maybe it looked a little bit different when you were watching from outside of the park.

“But I think the match did show if we are 100 per cent on our game, we win 5-0. Every game that we are 100 per cent we should win.

“It was the same pressure as we had at Dinamo. You are two times better than the players at other teams in the league but when you come to something better like Champions League or Europa League, then you can sometimes have a problem.

“That is normal because you maybe don’t have as much incentive in your own league.

“Dinamo is much better than the other teams in the Croatian League – far, far better.

“Players know this and they hear it but they can’t spend their time thinking and pondering this fact.

“The Scottish league is much more positive than the Croatian League.

“More people follow football
here. It is also two different styles of football, so it is hard to find the comparison.

“It seems that footballers work much harder here and everything is on a higher level.

“Dinamo is behind me. What they do is not hard for me. I am here and I am focused on Celtic.”

The first few lines actually make a bit of sense. Althoug it is worrying he found that game hard, he has a point. Was it his hard work and concentration that made it easy ? Probably not, Dundee United are terrible, and the SPFL are already considering relegating them two divisions  instead of one, to help them develop the next generation of Celtic signings.

But , reading between the lines, have we a defender who can concentrate for ninety minutes ? That would certainly be a novelty.

It took a while to play at Celtic Park but I loved it. I really enjoyed
it and I am looking forward to each new game.

“It is beautiful to be here playing in the stadium. It feels fantastic and the fans cheer you on,
appreciate your hard work.”

Wait till he’s been out for a beer with Efe, Emilio or Nadir. They’ll put him right about that.

Manager Ronny Deila, no doubt pleased that the calls for his head have abated slightly, looked ahead to a potentially difficult cup tie at Tynecastle tomorrow, the third game between the two in three tournaments.

He’s getting used to the press;

“One day we are talking about how bad Celtic are; this week people will want me to talk about winning the Treble I think we will take one game at a time now, that is the most important thing and just try to win as many as possible. In the end we can see where we are when the games have all been played.

“I will say the same this year – I want to win everything. But I know how hard it is. It is a long, long way before we start talking about that. It is a tough quarter-final, it is a game I think will be a hard one for us but I am looking forward to it.

It is what I enjoy, it is what the players enjoy and hopefully we can keep moving positively.”

Is he talking about the treble again ?

Thats a lot of pressure on one man.

But he put a stop to it last year, and no doubts hopes will be high again this year. He has already had his practice run at Fir park the other week, and he will be out to make a name for himself again soon if he is given the opportunity.

Which is likely.

Not tomorrow, though, it’s down to John Beaton to do his bit for the cause.

Celtic haven’t conceded a goal to Hearts since 2013, when the hoops won 3-1 in September of that year, but in the clash in September of this year, we didn’t score either.

Incidentally, Celtics goals that day were scored by Kris Commons, Anthony Stokes, and Teemu Pukki. Maybe the other two should have hugged Ronny more often as well.

Hang on, bit of breaking news….

It appears a few of Lord Livingstons colleagues have discovered his links to a club formed to help the poor, and are on their way to his office to deal with him….

Yesterdays picture featured the “legends ” who played in the a tournament in dubai, which is nice work if you can get it. Joe Miller, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Regi Blinker, Bobby Petta, David Elliot and Rudi Vata were in the squad managed by john Barnes, so it’s no aurprise they didn’t win it.

Stuart Hodge and Alan Muir are deep in conversation here.

As Scottish referees are not hooked up with microphones, we can only guess what they are talking about.

So we might as well have a stab at it.

Good article,

I thought Lord Livingston had ‘walked away’ from the club last year to concentrate on his ‘other work’????

we can argue and debate the merits of our manager but I can’t see much division over whether or not this guy should be removed from our board. his vote is in complete contrast to the ethos our club was founded on and claims to still represent. of be won’t resign remove him

Charlie Saiz

Not going to be popular this but I don’t think a persons political ideals should come into it regarding sitting on a Board of a Football Club.
Sport and Politics should never be mixed it seldom ends nicely when they do.
I might not agree with Nir Bittons thoughts on Palestine for example but they are of no interest to me he’s entitled to his own thoughts on that away from Celtic.
For example.
Just my opinion.

Charlie Saiz,

I would normally agree with you regarding people person beliefs, however on this occasion I think the difference here is that he voted in a public arena, where his views are there to be witnessed and recorded.

Nir Biton may well be anti Hamas or pro Judaic, but I have never read this in any of his profiles or tweets etc.

For Lord Livingston’s views to be so far removed from what our club stands for, is without question an embarrassment for our board. He really should do the right thing and resign. If he has not already

I am more concerned about Peter Lawwells bonus than this dicks personal Political views if I am honest.
I don’t agree with his politics I just happen to think he’s entitled to a personal opinion away from Football.
Same for anyone else at Celtic.

As I said, I agree with the principle of that, but when you are a public figure that principle has changed.

Lawell’s bonus is another matter all together. I don’t disagree with that, if this is what he is contracted to earn we should look at however gave him the contract

Sorry to get political, not like us I know, but those thieving b’strd Labour Lords ( what an oxymoron) abstained on the first Liberal motion to scrap the cuts and then all voted for a wee pause that directed the cuts to universal credits I believe. This makes it worse but media spin is all over this. Those Tory b’strds (sorry for the language but this is their least offensive description) are at it.

Sport & politics don’t mix? Tell that to Barca fans, St Pauli or the many other clubs (not least Glasgow Celtic) who represent a political view. Have no objection to conservatives supporting or being part of Celtic football club but when their decisions go against the whole ethos of the club then as far as I’m concerned its bye bye weasel.

It’s a bit late in coming but I hope with Simunovic in the defence he will settle things down and help the other defenders with their concentration which in some of them wanders at crucial moments. Craig Gordon will now have a man in front of him he can at last rely on so he can hopefully regain the lost confidence in those in front of him. I think Simunovic may just be the man to save Deila’s job. We don’t like to see people coming in and leaving after just a season and a half and then starting all over again with someone new. Klopp at Liverpool has said he needs maybe four seasons before they win the league but I doubt he will be given that amount of time. If the Tic defence starts doing their jobs properly we may just survive the rest of the games in Europe and then build from there to the the end of the season. Living in hope.

Charity and politics are not the same thing. About time some Celtic fans realised this simple distinction.

Glasgow Celtic is not some socialist, republican breeding ground. It is a football club with a charitable ethos.

Desperate stuff from the agenda merchants.

CarlJungleBhoy

Agreed, charity & politics are not the same thing, but this is not about either – It’s about hypocrisy. Surely going along with something which may mean that many more decent, but less well off, families may be forced to rely on charity (foodbanks etc.) to feed their wanes, is contrary to what Celtic as a club stand for – irrespective of your political views? It’s not about the politics, it’s about the morality & consistency (or lack of) behind the decision.

Plumsaucesaurus

Reply to  CarlJungleBhoy

I don’t disagree with that but his vote in the Lords is his own political choice. He hasn’t made that choice as a board member of Celtic but in another capacity.

It certainly isn’t a likeable choice and neither is it one I would make but it certainly doesn’t warrant forcing him out.

It disgusts me how some of our fellow fans seem to think that the club is a tool for their own political agendas. It isn’t now and never has been.

I don’t think that anyone is saying that politics and charity are the same thing.

I would guess that the Celtic support like any other football teams support has a mix of political beliefs.

However, I do believe that Celtic as a club was founded with the principles that we should care and protect people who are less well off than ourselves. If we have a board member who beliefs are so out of whack with this that they wish to deprive the needy of our society, I cannot see how the board can balance these beliefs against our principles.

I think that it would serve you well to draw a halt to the insults. This is not what this site is about.

Nobody is disputing Lord Livingston is entitled to his political beliefs.

What we are disputing is that he is a representative of a company that has a support founded on a tradition of helping those of society who are worse off than themselves, whilst he is voting to discriminate against these very members of our society.

And yes I use the word discriminate in the same tone as you use racism or hate.

Also I take great pleasure in advising you that I am not a keyboard warrior, neither am I dense or willfully ignorant, I am just another Celtic supporter with a point of view.

Lots off charities are political, Greenpeace & Amnesty International are charities, hardly non political. Standing up for the poor, speaking out against those who oppress them is political. Celtic were threatened with closure in 1952 for daring to fly the Irish flag, any fan wearing Green, White & Gold or waving the flag is making a political statement as they do when they sing The Soldiers Song which is probably the most political National Anthem there is. Maybe some Celtic supporters are unaware that what they wear & what they sing are political but as the song says ‘if you know your history’.

We are all hypocrites in Football when you think about it.
We want the best team possible to go out and be a success in Europe.
Not because we think we can win the Champions League you see but because “it’s £20m lost”
Of the many many millions that have passed through the tills at Celtic Park how much of it by percentage has actually gone into the very cause Brother Walfrid, John Glass and co set out to help?
Very little by comparison I would suggest.
By rights we should be fielding a team of self produced players who play for a normal wage.
All our profits should go direct to the Celtic Foundation and general running of our Club.
That is if we want to stick to the reason of why Celtic actually formed and existed?
But that’s not practical nowadays is it?
This dick (and he is a dick btw) is entitled to have his own views away from the Club.
I don’t share his viewpoint and I certainly don’t advocate his way of thinking but as a good Celtic Man like the rest of you I will afford him his right to do so.
He’s not at Celtic to impose his Political Will he’s at Celtic to add Financial know how.
Because like it or not we have become a Corporate Entity with Charitable beginnings and Charitable Leanings.

Jambos Wednesday night? Tynecastle is a tough place for away fans as well as players. Cousins of William team is hard to call or predict. They may end up being the second team in the league this season and our 0-0 home draw still rankles. Also, we don’t know which Celtic will turn up. I’d like us to put out our best on-form 11. I think we can handle the sheep this weekend so should play our best 11. Forget Molde for now. Ronny are you listenin’? Here goes:
Gordon
Lustig/Boyata/Simunovic/Tierney
Brown/Bitton
Forrest/Armstrong/Commons
Griffiths
Subs: Bailly/Johansen/Mackay-Steven/Ciftci/Janko/Ambrose/Rogic

These League Cup games must go to penalties or extra time? so that’s also a factor. They’ll put all their men behind the ball and try hit us on the break.
Tough to call but a nail-biting 2-1 to us.
What I would really like to see is us hammering them from the get-go and be 2 up before they can recover. We can do it but I am nervous about it. It is a big game for our ambitions (don’t mention the T-word!)I am sure any team losing two goals to us can’t continue to park the bus and that opens things for us. Then we can play the way we want to.

Gerry

Interesting comments from Tierney, the need to develop his stamina and strength carefully to help him in his career.
The other side is, most fans would probably agree that a settled back four is what we want and need. Tierney is probably in the box seat for LB, but if we need to rotate him out periodically to protect him does that cause the very disruption we’re trying to avoid? I’m glad I’m not a manager as making calls like that for the good of the team, and for the good of a young player and his future career (hopefully for many years at Celtic) must be tough. One of those nice problems to have I suppose.

Down with that sort of thing

“the governments plan to take even more money from the poor”

Ralph, while people may rightly disagree with cutting benefits to those in desperate need, can we at least refrain from thinking that not giving people money is the same as taking money from them?

Stop pretending we’re a world power, cut our offence budget, and there would be ample funds to help the needy at home.

To more important matters – Deila came with this 24-hour footballer thing, so why have our performances been lacking in success late in games when superior fitness should be telling?

I think that those who steward an institution like Celtic Football Club, should fit with the general ethos, values and traditions of the club. The roots of the club were based in alleviating acute poverty through charitable work and donation and that ethos should be front and centre in the selection of those who sit at the very top of our club. His Lordship by his public vote has signaled that he has a different ethos and set of values and that is fine. He should then do the decent thing and resign from our club. There is a difference between personal views that we might speculate on and public views that are clear and fail to fit our club values and ethos.

I just read that you voted for Tax Credits to be cut for the lowest earners, yet you sit on the Board of Celtic Football Club, a club founded on the principal of helping the poor and less fortunate. You are a total hypocrite and a disgrace like the rest of those who voted in favour of the cut.
You members of the “elite” class who live financially secure comfortable lives think the working class is here to work for a pittance during peace-time in your businesses to make you richer and then to send their husbands, sons, brothers and fathers to die in wars so that you and your kind can fill your bank accounts with the spoils of said wars. You all might have got away with that in the last centuries, but you’re now dealing with a better educated working class and you will not get it so easy today.
I don’t know how you can look at yourself in the mirror. You obviously have no conscience whatsoever. The lies and deceit of the Tory Party is the stuff that provokes revolution…history has shown that. So enjoy your next expensive dinner in a 5 star restaurant while you get a wee bit richer off the work of less fortunate folk…but resign from the board of Celtic FC..we don’t want your kind anywhere near us.
Hail hail.

I bet you are stupid enough to think that politics and football go hand-in-hand.

Stick to making banners about terrorists. That’s your level pal.

The ‘Lord’ Livingston issue is three fold for me. Firstly, his views are that far removed from the fans (customers to him), he risks damaging the reputation of the club in the eyes of the fans and fellow board members may lose popularity, or even risk their shareholder-elected positions, for supporting him. Second, along with the rejection of the Living Wage it appears he wants to decrease the finances of the clubs lower paid staff. Third, he wants to decrease the finances some of the fans and, therefore, reduce the amount of money that fans spend on the club. The last two will see an indirect reduction on the clubs income and the percieved way the club treats employees may discouraged potential signing targets, clearly to the detriment of the club and in direct conflict with the position the ‘Lord’ holds at the club. His former party leader said the miners were “the enemy within”, but his actions have shown he is our ‘enemy within’. To paraphrase Don Corleone: Its not politics, its strictly Celtic.

What Plum doesn’t get in saying that he (and others, for we do not know who they vote for) is on our Board for his ‘business acumen’ is where he learned and profited from this acumen A look at the declared business interests from all MP’s and what kind of companies their pensions are invested in shows their complete detachment and contempt for, at least, the working class. He is on our Board for exactly this reason I remember having to be in Celtic Park before 2pm as you got a discount on showing UB40 (your card, not the well known Birmingham reggae beat combo)

Just got a reply from Lord Livingstone (he must have used his MI5 connections to get my first name!!!):-

To

gringo2580@yahoo.com

> Jim
>
> You clearly have decided you know all about me. You refer to ‘elite’ class – my grandfather was born in the Gorbals and my dad was the first in family to go to university. His father was a penniless immigrant.
>
> For what its worth, I would make changes to the tax credit proposals but I votes against the motion as it is not the constitutional place of the unelected House of Lords to vote down a financial measure which is clearly the will of the House of Commons.
>
> I have been a Celtic fan all my life and stood in the jungle as a kid. Celtic is a club that should welcome people of all faiths, colours, creed and opinion. My political views have nothing to do with Celtic and I welcome you as a Celtic supporter but I will not seek to impose my opinions on you.

Was there always a fire in his kitchen and a kettle on the boil ? If not i feel as a club we should disassociate with this anglophile directly.

First, to be fair, he took the time to answer my email…others would have ignored it.
He wrote again that the House of Lords never interferes with “money bills” (bills that are connected to financial matters)and so, although he personally would have recommended changes in the bill, he felt it was unconstitutional for the Lords as an unelected body to block it.
So I asked him why many of his fellow Peers, knowing like him the “convention” of not blocking such bills, still voted against the cuts,he replied again with the same answer as before.

The michelle mone excuse. Its not technically a bill about raising or lowering taxation. So it is not exempt. Hes talking out of his arse. Sooner it scuds down london road the quieter he’ll be.

Not sure what it can do. But you have to make your feelings known. Get did of this Tory bastirt from Celtic.

Keep registering I was No. 286 when I petitioned, by now it is about 2,500 people who object to this person being on the Celtic Board.

I can’t understand why people of the right associate with Celtic. What don’t they grasp about the club??
We have a guy in our CSC who is not only a member of the National Party – the New Zealand version of the Tories – but a constituency chair. He claims National does a lot for the poor, but under their rule, child poverty has risen from 20% to 27%. That’s the same kind of doublespeak the Tories use.
