Celtic Diary Monday October 26: Big Hugs As A Defence Takes Shape

Celtic swept to a convincing 5-0 win over a lacklustre dundee utd side yestareday, moving further ahead at the top of the league table, and restoring a little confidence to the side in the process.
Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring after nipping in to relieve the dundee Utd keeper of the ball, before cutting it into the net from an almost Larssonesque angle, Deydrick Boyata headed a second, Kris Commons got a couple, one from the spot, and finally Scott Brown blundered down the left wing before another one of his passes went astray, although this time it hit a Tannadice defedner on the head and ended up in the net.
So, thats it. we’re all happy again .
Right ?
Well, no.
First of all, Dundee united were shocking. No interest, no enthusiasm and most of all, none of their players threw a wobbly at the coach when they were substituted.
Then again, he is a big lad.
Too many passes went astray again, and a hatful of chances were wasted.
But, there is good news, something that does point to a little progress being made.
Keiran Tierney, in at left back, gave an exemplary display of how to play the role. Full of energy, pace ,ability and directness. And he could defend as well. Emilio Izaguirre, who has been going through a rough time of late, now has genuine competition for his place in the side, which may mean he lifts his game a bit. That can only be good for Celtic.
Also in defence, we saw Jozo Simunovic stroll through the game. Tough when he needed to be, calm when required, and although dunde united rarely threatened, he looked as though he could step up a gear if needed.
What was noticable about him was his ability to read a game, and be in the right place at the right time. With more game time, and more familiarity with his colleagues, that will get even better.
Boyata should settle a bit more now he has a regular partner, and in fairm=ness to Deila, when Celtic exited the Champions League, and van dijk was off, it appears that these two were his plan A. It’s just unfortunate we’ve had to wait this long for them to look like they may be a partnership.
Stuart Armstrong also had a good game, and Gary Mackay Steven looked a little more sure of himself than he has been of late.
As for the others, theres not much to say, as they all just went about their jobs, and were never really tested by the side who already look doomed to playing in the championship next season.
Oh, did I mention commons ?
Despite his tantrum in midweek, he was handed a start, ran about a bit, put a few corners into exactly the same place he usually does and scored a couple of goals.
This time when he was taken off, he was restrained by manager Deila;
Embedded image permalink
Alright. It was a hug. A bloody big girly hug.
Designed almost certainly to show there are no hard feelings between the two.
But , importantly, it shows that both of them have moved on.
However, the look on John Collins’s face when Commons went over to shake his hand was an entire;ly different story.
Forget about Deila going anywhere. Its not going to happen. Within the next few months we will see a team comprised of his own signings and players he has salvaged that Lennon wasn’t using properly. (Biton, Rogic, et al ) Add to that a couple of youngsters in the mould of Keiran Tierney and a few of the doubters on the Deila bus might start looking out of the window again instead of hiding their head between their legs.
Yesterday saw seven Scots in the starting line up, if you count commons as a Scot. Calum MacGregor coming on meant we had used eight. and thats without Mulgrew and Forrest.
Or Scott Allen, Ryan Christie, and Liam Henderson.
For those of you wondering why I’m sticking with Deila, there’s your answer.
If you can’t afford the ready made product, you have to make your own. That was always the plan, and it seems to be well under way.
After the game, ronny played down all the fuss;

“It is hard demands here at Celtic, At a successful club, you are always winning trophies. Now we have won the league four times in a row and will hopefully do it a fifth time. We are winning cups as well.

“Everybody wants us down, except of course the Celtic fans. When you have done a lot of good things, the demands get very, very high. That’s how it is at big clubs like this.

“If you look around, now it is Aberdeen getting troubles but it is not the same pressure on

them as there is in Celtic.

“But that’s how it is here and everybody has to cope with it. You need character to do what we did today.

“There were a lot of brave players out there, you also saw players have fun and that’s the most important thing in football.”

The MSM, fearful of another meltdown at ibrox, have been quick to jump on divisions within the Celtic support, and i was a little worried that the Green Brigade may have come up with a banner they could seize on to put Deila under further pressure.
But he lads did us proud, with this one;
Embedded image permalink
The lord alone knows how they managed to get past security with that one, but well done. The only way to defeat this ludicrous bill is to keep pushing.
And then push some more.
Especially as the media want to ignore the protests.
Craig Swan, at the Record sat with his crayon in hand ready to pile on further pain;

Craig Swan: Celtic Park an eerie place before the game..

but 5-0 win over Dundee United soon lifted the spirits

Which was pretty much the theme for the media.

Never mind, we might just have seen the season kickstarting, albeit against a very poor side, but there was enough in hooped shirts to give cause for optimism.

There is a little worry over at ibrox, apart from the usual legal and financial issues.

After being overlooked for the Liverpool job in favour of the untried and inexperienced Jurgen Klopp, Mark Warburton has been installed as favourite for the newly available position at Aston villa, not by any bookies, but by the knowledgable and trustworthy Level 5 PR company, led by crusading journalist James Traynor.

I suppose the name Fifth Columnists was already taken.

Warburton has, acoording to at least one source, been telling people he would jump at the chance to return to England, isn’t a serious contender for any big jobs down there, or any small ones come to think of it, although the Co-op near me are looking for a manager.

If he were to leave, as unlikely as it seems, be prepared for him having just been a figurehead, and it was, in fact, Davie Weir who was in charge all along.

Hibernian are breathing down their necks in the league after a shaky start, and will face Warburtons Magic Hat at Easter Road soon. Is it the pefect start about to become the perfect storm ?

I figured it might be worth putting a bet on hibs to win the Championship, or Second Division, as it should be known.

So i had a look on william hills….

Surely if one side were overwhelming favourites, then bookies, never shy of taking your last pound, would positively encourage bets against the odds on team, as it should be money in the bank.
I rang the UK number to ask about it, but all of their advisors were busy. Presumably taking calls from the Scottish press hot on the story….
Yesterdays pic was of brothers Tom ( Celtic ) and Colin (Rangers ) McAdam, who faced each other numerous times in the colours of their respective teams.
Trickier today.
Whats the story here ?

Mornin’
This a ” Ronny doubter” here who has managed to type this despite my head being between my legs.(and where you got that from… Gawd only knows.)
Anyway..To try and make positive judgements on anything from yesterday’s game,is a total waste of time.
Dundee Utd were, ultimately, dreadful/shocking/rubbish/poor/crap..and not neccessarily in that order.
For all the possession we had,we ended up being wasteful again..and how many times has that been said ?
I will say that, irrespective of the opposition, our new CB looked a really good player and young Tierney was excellent…and I hope his performance is rewarded with a game on Wednesday.
And one final point…
I’m not John Collins’ biggest fan..but yesterday highlighted what he was trying to say about the different levels in Europe and in Scotland…and how it causes us problems.
It can’t do our team any good to be up against opposition who have no intention of playing against you..as we saw yesterday, and then come up against teams who do.
That’s the area that Ronny needs to get sorted..and until he does…Europe will remain a pipe-dream.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  Mike Bhoyle

I agree with this Mike but the players also have to get this sorted because far too often the key men are simply not producing the same level they show Domestically as they do in Europe.
The Games against Inter and Qarabag show they can.
Thursday they simply didn’t and this is why I am questioning the attitude of some of them and to whether we have some bottle merchants at Celtic.
I foresee a clearout coming.
Not in a Managerial sense either.

I’m a big doubter when it comes to Europe. In fact, I’ll take my head away from between my legs a minute to say Ronny is clueless in Europe….doesn’t learn lessons and continues playing players who should be nowhere near the team.

He’ll be here the rest of the season to win the shooty in that is the SPFL and I hope he wins the treble.

If our board leave him in charge for another CL qwalifying campaign they are in big trouble.

elcormaco

I m a Ronnie doubter and yesterday, while welcome, still feels like a sticking plaster over a fracture.

Rightly or wrongly I m judging Ronnie by how we do in Europe. With the resources we have winning the league should be a given, its how we progress in Europe that gives us an indication of where we really are as a team. And Sorry Charlie holding up the Inter game as an example of positive dispalys in Europe? We conceded 3 goals at home and went out of the tie. This isnt a good thing.

So if Ronnie were to go now I wouldnt mind at all, but I imagine he’ll get at the very least the rest of this Europa league campaign. Any more Molde level performances,a scary carbon copy of Malmo and he can go, we’ve all seen Celtic lose loads and loads of away games in Europe, but that was about dispiriting as any I can recall.

The high point of recent years in terms of away performacnes was Spartak Moscow, where we carried a thrreat on the break and defended diligently, we are currently drifitng further and further from that level and humping a rank rotten Dundee United team doesnt change that

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  elcormaco

Two goalkeeping errors from a Keeper who up until that point had been flawless did not give a true reflection of our performance in those games.
The performance is what I am talking about not the result.

elcormaco
Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Unfortunately they were part of our performance in those games. Every big European game Ronnie has overseen has included some horrendous individual or collective errors.

To say they dont count as apart from the stupid mistakes that cost us the game we actaully played well is to miss the point. The game is about attacking and defending – in some European games we have atacked quite well granted, but seem incapable of dealing with the defending side of it in any way you could describe as competent.

Time and again under Ronnie these stupid mistakes happen and he seems incapable of learning / being able to put it right despite talking about doing those very things.

The first goal Molde scored the other night a classic case in point. One bad mistake form Boyata and a guy runs unchallenged from around the half way line, plays one pass and the unmarked striker strokes it into the near post.

Mistaks galore – the manager insisting both full backs push up the pitch at the same time leaving us with very little cover, a terribly underhit pass, failure to get close to the guy running with the ball and challenge / foul him to stop the danger there. Defender failing to stay tight to his man allowing him to get into the box unchallenged, and the keeper allowing a fairly soft shot into his near post. On the second goal how many chances did we have to clear the ball and failed to do so?

If you want to excuse Ronnie all of these mistakes then what actually is the point in having him? Are victories down to him and defeats down to the players? Where can i sign up for a similar job description.

Ronnie seems like a good enough guy, but I can t even really bear to him talk after another Euro horror show now because its the same shite – “poor mistakes, not good enough, we must learn and do better” and nothing changes. He should have gone after Malmo for me, to chuck that game in such a spineless way was pretty unforgivable in my opinion.

Yes United were very poor, but you still have to beat what’s in front of you. Tierney was excellent yesterday and he really should be given an extended run in the team. Perhaps we might end up looking back on Thursday as a turning point (hopefully for the better) as the players got a richly deserved wake up call. No team has a right to win – it has to be earned by hard work, application and of course a bit of flair and getting the basics right.

Thursday was a turning point, the point where some had it confirmed to them that this manager is out of his depth, and a number of players are either not giving their all, off form or not good enough!
In the case of Ambrose, he clearly is in the category of must be sold!
The sparse areas around the stadium tells us a story…the fans are sick of failure in Europe, over priced match day tickets and a board who are Downsizing the team.

It is going to get worse, because we have a manager who doesn’t have the first fucking Scooby!

As we have seen in these columns over the time since RD arrived there are two schools of thought: the manager and his coaching staff are irredeemably useless and must be shown the door immediately. The other holds in essence that Rome wasn’t but in a day, so RD and co need sufficient time to develop a team that can play the kind of football we all want to see at home and in Europe. I suppose I’m still inclined to the latter view: the argument is clearly over whether we have seen enough to be absolutely sure one way or the other.Competing in Europe is getting harder and harder each year and there is a real risk that Celtic get left behind. The distortion in the game caused by TV money means that we will always be up against it no matter who sits in the dug out or in the boardroom. Perhaps if Desmond were to shell out some extra pennies and we had a different manager and coaching staffing our prospects might be better. But there’s no guarantee. Football has a very annoying habit of recurring disappointment.

I get what your saying mate, I understand a manager needs a bit of time, but I don’t see anything from Deila, I genuinely like the guy as a person but it’s about Celtic at the end of the day, the results and performances in Europe are worrying at least.
See if Deila turns this around and we build a side that is successful in Europe ( success being getting into the CL group stages AND giving a good account of ourselves) I will be happy, we need to be in the CL it is the only show in town, it’s where our club will grow in stature!
Desmond and Lawwell need to back the man with some hefty investment to get there, if they believe in him, then fucking back him! HH!

Agreed – we need to be in the CL group stages and give a good account of ourselves even if we have no earthly chance of winning the thing. Beating the top teams at CP is a good indication of where we stand in terms of ability and as a football team. It also makes for a damn good night out.

That said, I still have some nagging doubts about the CL where big money, sponsors and a tiny handful of wealthy clubs in about three or four countries are the real beneficiaries. The current structure of European football works against clubs like ours (and all the Nordic and Dutch clubs for that matter).

Just a wee reminder, failure to make the latter stages of the EL or the CL group stages next season will see us lose about a third of our total coefficient points and this will result in us being unseeded for the CL playoff stage, maybe the the 3rd qualifying round as well. We will also drop down a pot for group stage draws.

Next season is looking likely to be the last for a while that we get an easy route to the CL, the Malmos and Maribors will become teams like Salzburg and Basel (probably the champions of the 13th -15th ranked leagues, currently Switzerland, Austria and Czech Republic)

After next season we will have to beat teams ranked higher than us in order to get to the CL and then its pot 4 in CL or pot 3 in EL for us where we will face more higher ranked opponents. The last time Celtic beat a higher ranked team over two games was Spartak Moscow in 2012.

Great result but as pointed out yesterday it doesn’t mean we’ve turned the corner. Hopefully Simunovic can start to settle in, and the support tolerate any lapses while he finds his feet.
Not sure how to handle Tierney, great prospect but he looked tired in the Ajax game for example so we need to understand his physical limitations at that age. “If you’re good enough you’re old enough” I have heard, and perhaps domestically we look to protect young players rather than how they get blooded on the continent irrespective. But getting up and down that line for ninety minutes, four games in 10/11 days? That might be too high an expectation, I hope the coaching team get the balance right and help develop the lad.
Four wins from Hearts, Aberdeen, Molde and Ajax would give Ronnie breating space (I would hope) from all quarters. That is a tough ask, but it is the hole that has been dug for him by his players. I hope for a succesful Deila and hope he gets the time; my only reservation is in two crucial games (Malmo and Molde) none of his players turned up for him, why?

Tierney already has a decent build I think should be able to handle the rougher stuff in the SPL.
Ronny seems to have handled the Forrest situation regarding injury well so I have no worries on how he prepares and bleeds the youngsters within the side in fact it was one of his main priorities when he arrived to improve these things.

Papering over the crack I feel.

United were as poor as you can get yesterday, so no real answers from that display. The usual 1 dimensional play, slow, lethargic and happy to play backwards rather than forward. possession is important but with thought, purpose, delivery and end product !!!!
Why of Why do we they still try and play the tippie-tappie through the middle of the defence … we are not Barcelona …. and when the ball does go wide the delivery into the box is generally dreadful, more hopeful than measured.

I believe we don’t have the players to play this 4-2-3-1 formation, the 3 supporting players don’t have enough wit and ability to make this work especially in Europe. Requires pace, control, and vision …. Something that is sadly missing in this team. Unfortunately RD is will stick with this till he gets the boot.

I think a 3-5-2 would be a better solution for the current squad. Much easier to drill the players in their role, rather than the free movement and awareness required to play the above.

I bet none of you would tell your own weans that but we have a very young team which requires good man management and some encouragement FFS.
Some of you are sounding worse than the Red Tops or MSM. They want Ronny out too although I’m not sure of their reasons but then I’m not so sure about the reasons some of you bhoys are offering. Whatever wonderbhoy you want to replace Ronny will still need to win the league for you to get your rocks off in Europe and so far, Ronny has been perfect in winning the league. Maybe that’s why the MSM want him out, to make way for Sevco next year? I wanted David Moyes to replace Lennon but I didn’t see Moyes (Christ, forget Keane!) busting a gut to come to the best club in the world, one he once played for. At least Ronny wanted to be here. Ask Forrest or Rogic or Bitton how good his coaching skills are compared to Lennon’s. I see in the papers that some want Lenny back! MON and Lenny both left the club of their own free will.
I bet some of you will even be trouser-tenting on Wednesday night if we don’t do the Jambos. I have met the enemy— and they is US!

No other big team in the world would accept thr downsizing we have had to endure from lawell and co , including openly admitting that they gave tge top job to a guy who was to be numbet two which in its self is a nonsence as most managers would bring there own number two in. Funkyy

Mike Bhoyle, I don’t think anybody is saying you’re not allowed to criticize the team…I was having a fit during last Thursday’s game. But I think we have to accept that we all have our individual opinions, some of them are the same, some of them overlap in certain areas and some of them are completely different…but they are all worth hearing and carry equal weight. We all care and suffer about what’s happening..there is no easy fix unless some “millionaire with wealth off the radar” comes in and puts real money into the coffers. I believe, not blindly, that we will come out of this bad period with a solid home grown team that will give us a solid foundation for the future, especially in Europe.
Yes it’s hard to suffer what we have had to up to now and it’s difficult to give 100% backing to the manager when things have gone pear-shaped several times. But I think he can succeed. We don’t know all the details of what’s happening inside the club, so my one doubt is how much “influence” Collins has on what has been going on. I would feel a helluva lot better if he was gone. For those who are almost baying for Ronny’s dismissal..be careful what you wish for…Collins might be what you get next!!!
When things are at their bleakest and worst, that’s when a manager needs to feel the support from the fans, not during a lap of honour with a Cup or league title. I believe the guy is really trying to build something here, it could be internal interference is making things harder for him.
It’s obvious why the media want him out…they’re afraid that things start to click for us, that Ronny is a success…and they f*cking fear that ‘cos they know their pet team, in whatever form, will be in our shadow for years and years to come. So they will do their best to highlight any defeats we have and they’ll fan the flames of any discontent to try to get rid of Ronny. The fact that they want him gone so desperately is in itself an indication that they think he might succeed. That’s my calm take on things….and I don’t need meds.

My job may be just as tough, supporting the team come hell or high water. I’m no yes man and wanted the old board out before Fergus came. FFS, how could I be better than anyone on this site since I was chuffed when Mowbray was named manager!!! What a load of shite that was. If things go pear-shaped I will confess my sins and support Celtic with all my ancient, bad-ticking heart. The only thing I’m better than some of you is typing, which I learned to do well over fifty years ago. No big deal. That only means I can type more shite quicker than you. Good health to all you Fenian bastards for I am among you.
Bring on the Jambos, and yes, I’m nervous.

Some stats for Celtic managers first seasons in charge. The ‘Bad’ column is the number of games lost against weaker teams and the ‘Good’ column is the number of games won against stronger teams. That years Uefa rankings used to determine which teams are weaker/stronger than us.

Bad – Name – Good
9 – RD – 0
5 – NL – 3
8 – TM – 0
5 – GS – 0
3 – MON – 4
7 – JB/KD – 0
7 – JV – 2
7 – WJ – 0
4 – TB – 2
9 – LM – 2

@Mike mcarthur, try:-

http://www.ifeed2all.eu/type/football.html

or

http://fırstrowsports.eu/

Usually there are multiple links. A few months ago they started getting loads of ads opening on screen…just click on “Ads Close”, then any “x” that are in the ad boxes. The culprit is “Bet 365” it even opens another tab when you’re closing the ads. But eventually after a few clicks you get peace to watch the match. I watched the match yesterday morning nae problem.

Haha fair play devoy you certainly are good at the typing that was a novel! I understand what your saying ive just always beenthe way if we are shite i will say were shite . Ive had many an argument wi my auld da who sees everything with the green specs like you lol. When we were winning under strachen i used to go to the london tavern at half time coz the football was shite! Maybe i was just spoiled watching the king of kings and co over the years

Totaly agree monti , thats one thing i do like about ronny is the young players he buys if indeed it is him. I think we will be a quality team when these guys are all playing together.

You’re right Delbhoy, I gave up my st when Strachan was here because we were playing crap football and I remember him saying the fans knew nothing about the game, ignorant wee sod. I’ve said it before that we struggle in the early parts of games in Europe, that’s the away games because we can’t seem to handle teams coming at us, the players aren’t used to it. The coaching staff must drum it into them that the concentration levels have to be 100 pc. The European matches this season have been lost or drawn because the players can’t go through a match without losing it. I actually thought Deila would have been gone by now, he doesn’t seem to know what his best side is and a settled team is what’s needed. We shall know his fate by the end of the year.

Healthy disagreement is fine good even, but if you care to have a look at some of the abuse on this site last week from a select few it was way beyond constructive criticism it was pure bile. No naming names but I’m sure you know who you are. Makes me puke at times reading personal insults against Celtic players & management, slag them off for their performance or lack off but personal insults???? Said it before & I’ll said it again some of the abuse from last week is straight from sevco / rangers media book of insults towards their own.

Could everyone please be nice to each other, I’m really sensitive and I get scared when people shout at me…..

Fair comment Monti,

No dummy spit from me, just a simple reminder for us all – myself included – to keep the heid before we we make it personal ( well, as personal as you can from behind a key board … ut you get ma drift )

Now for your sins Monti checkout ( briefly, then go for a steam to cleanse yourself ) rangers media Bearsden…surely we don’t want to drop to that level of abuse.

Bondibrian,
I would never look on the Huns blogs, they are a sick people!
I agree we don’t need to insult each other ( Charlie Saiz is fair game tho) lol.

Now I’m going to give you a cyber hug and make it all fluffy again.

I’m not overly sensitive (except when my posts don’t appear!!! lol), but I 100% agree with BondiBrian and Devoy45. It’s one thing to be passionate in your beliefs and your opinions, but personal insults towards the manager and other posters should be frowned upon. Insulting people doesn’t show yourself in the best light and you lose any credibility for your opinion. “We are Celtic”..it’s more than a group of words.
Now don’t dare call me names or, or…or I don’t know what I’ll do!!

Not in his first season, only one European team that year and that was Artmedia Bratislava. 10 years ago and it still hurts.

Makes me laugh every time I read the articles great writing. Comments are great we all want Celtic to do well. I like what Ronny is trying we need to move and develop. As supporters we expect to win, do you think the Turks expected to get beat by Molde no but it happens. People say we shouldn’t get beat by Molde, Malmo etc but their national teams are in Euro playoffs where are we only British team not going to France something wrong somewhere must be Celtics fault

At the request of Bondibrian I’ve not to call you a fud, a prick, a fucking eejit or a moron.
