Celtic Diary Sunday October 25: Deila Needs To Stamp Authority

We can accuse the Celtic players, perhaps rightly, of not trying.

Maybe they should sit in on one of the meetings where they plan the match day experience. Those guys certainly can’t be accused of not trying.

Here’s your matchday schedule for Celtic v Dundee United:

10.00am:
Celtic Superstore opens for the day. Pop in for all your pre-match essentials and take advantage of our festive special offer. Simply spend £60 or more in a single transaction and receive a free £5 gift voucher. This offer is also available online atwww.celticsuperstore.co.uk

10.30am:
The Ticket Office at Celtic Park opens for supporters looking to buy or collect tickets for the match. Tickets are also on sale now for Celtic v Aberdeen (October 31), Molde FK (November 5) and Ajax (November 26). More information on ticketing arrangements can be found online – CLICK HERE

Either completely cut off from reality, and how most of the fans are feeling right now, or nobly trying to get the support interested again.

You decide. I’ve made my mind up.

1.30pm:
Stadium opens. Take the kids to the Family Stand where the Celtic Soccer Academy coaches will be on hand, teaching some famous Celtic turns including the Larsson and the Jinky. Better still, five lucky bhoys and ghirls who impress the coaches will be chosen to go out and show off their skills on the pitch at half-time! We’ll have our new ‘Honesty Flags’ available too, simply take a flag and use it during the match as you cheer on the Bhoys then return it to the Family Stand as you leave the stadium. Don’t forget to write your name, client code and date of the match on the flag to be in with the chance to win spot prizes throughout the season. A little reward for your honesty!

Honesty flags ?

“Could I have the one that says Fuck Off Ronny please, it’s over there in between the Collins Is A Tosser and the Lawwell, Lawwell , Get Tae Fuck ones  ”

Well, if theres no money to be made  out of Europe this year, I think they might have just hit on an important new revenue stream.

Today, of course, Celtic face dundee united. A game forced to be played on Sunday because of the clubs involvement in the Europa League. This has also led to the non appearance of Wednesdays League cup game at Hearts on tv screens. The BBC can only cover Tuesday games, and because Celtic are playing today, they cannot play on Tuesday. Apparently, thems the rules.

Ronny Deila, despite social media campaigns and no doubt a few protests today remains the manager.

And so he should.

But given recent events, he needs to stamp his authority on the club , starting when he picks todays team.

With John Collins still more in fear of losing his job than getting Ronny’s, the Norwegian has to get it right. Otherwise Collins will feel he has a chance of slipping into deila’s shoes, which may not appeal to everyone.

Actually, it probably doesn’t appeal to anyone, except maybe Collins.

The biggest dilemma facing the boss is in defence. He knows in his mind who he wants to play, he knows what they are capable of, but for whatever reasons he hasn’t been able to do that, and therefore we are still at the right lads who has got their boots with them stage.

There is an argument that some players should be, er, rested, and that makes a lot of sense.

But the defence needs to gel quickly, and therefore, if Gordon, Lustig, Boyata, Simunovic and Izaguirre are fit, then they should all play.

Ronny has stuck rigidly to his system, but it’s always good to try something different, it means that opponents, such as Molde in the week, are forced to second guess what you are going to do.

So let’s try a 4-4-2.

For a laugh.

From the right to the left,   Armstrong, Allen, Biton  Rogic . If Allen isn’t fit, then move Armstrong inside and play Mackay Steven or Forrest.

The full backs can do the overlapping.

Ciftci and Griffiths up front.

Brown and Johansen are either carrying injuries or grudges, so leave them out for a bit.

And Commons ?

KRIS COMMONS is ready to put the mayhem of Molde behind him and ask for an extended deal at Celtic – as MailSport
understands he expects to
outlast boss Ronny Deila.

The playmaker was forced into a public apology for blowing his top at being subbed in last week’s Europa League defeat.

However, MailSport understands the 32-year-old is determined not to let
frustrations at his up-and-down
relationship with boss Ronny Deila drive a wedge between him and the club.

Commons has a year left on his deal beyond this season after agreeing a
two-year extension in February.

And it’s believed he’s determined to add at least another 12 months
to that to see out his playing days at the club. Despite that seeming unlikely as long as Deila remains in charge and he struggles to hold down a place, privately he expects to outlast the under-fire boss.

More mischief making from the Mail, or is it ?

Common’s agent Martin Reilly said;

“No way is Kris going anywhere, he’s staying put – 100 per cent.

“He wants to end his playing career with Celtic.

After his tantrum on Thursday he may have got his wish.

“When he retired as a
Scotland player, he did it to extend his club career and if he stays fit he can play at Celtic until he’s 35.

“What happened on
Thursday is all brushed under the carpet. He’s happy at Celtic and will get on with doing his job professionally.”

We’re not at the game today, a number of call offs meant only a couple of us could still make it, so its Aberdeen next week for me.

Those of you who are, could I ask a favour ?

Get behind the players, the manager and the club.

I’m never sure whether its the fans job to motivate the players, or the players job to lift the fans.

Today, i think the fans need to take the lead. The players seem a little unloved and miserable about it.

If only to stop a gleeful press from trumoeting divisions amongst us, and happily pushing headlines like this one, from the Scotsman;

Deila’s standing among Celtic support is plummeting

The story, by Andrew Smith, gos on to point out Deila’s failings in Europe, in the same way they didn’t when Walter Smith won something like one out of twenty two, and whilst they will always find an excuse to have a go at progressive management, especially if it’s at Celtic, we could do without giving them further fuel for their pyre.

If ever we needed that fabled 7-0 , it’s today.

With all the goals coming in the last twenty minutes, to redress this little anomaly I cam across the other day;

Embedded image permalink

Only three goals thus far have been scored in the last twenty minutes, compared with quite a few conceded, I would guess.

Although this one, about set pieces surely cannot be right. I thought we conceded more or less from every set piece;

Anyway, a big win and a big performance today, from whoever starts.

Finally, whats unusual about this picture ?

Another Masonic handshake, there fekin everywhere, seriously, you would play izzy and Gordon today, surly we Have somebody within the whole Celtic set up that could possibly run doon the left-hand Side of a pitch and possibly, if it’s naw to much trouble, put a fkg good cross into the opponents box, Bailey surly warrants a start as does young Allen if he’s fit, Johansson needs a long rest so he can take his head oot his arse and stop thinking he’s some world class player just cause he had one good season, anyway I’m going fur 4-1 Celtic… KTF

Take control Ronnie and sack your coaching staff and then close the door behind you. And then can we have someone who knows how to pick a decent manager decide who replaces him.

Great read yesterday and today. My initial comments relate yesterday’s Diary.

You will note I have stayed away from the “debates”. I have had my day on the terraces, the yelling, the foaming mouths, the biting and scratching and bloody noses. That’s why I stopped taking the wife.

However, I think you may have summed up the modern day club football dilemma or just caught that nail with a bloody lucky hit on the head. No matter which, perhaps we need to come to terms with having to tell different stories to those grandchildren sitting on our knees. My God, even that is under scrutiny in this modern politically correct and fucked up world.

“We’re around eighteen months into Deila’s tenure. About half the time it should reallistically take to build your own team, hopefully a team who won’t spend their long nights staring wistfully south hoping to jump on the gravy train down there full of mediocre mercenaries who have already got everything they wanted, except for medals.”

Might I add that money is way ahead of medals and anything that looks like loyalty, commitment or sporting integrity at any level in football these days. Finally, I am afraid Big Jock’s gone and so are those sort of glory days. With him go many of his famous statements too, none more so than “The Celtic jersey does not shrink to fit inferior players.” I am afraid today the jersey does – probably not helped by being manufactured by New Balance. Personally, I do not see that as totally down to the manager, though some sort of fitting beforehand should definitely be on his agenda.

I understand the frustrations, the mix of emotions and the constant shattering of dreams, no matter how unrealistic. I have been there more often than I have gone the toilet so no need to be told. But in the end, what truly makes us Celtic supporters is “faithful through and through”. That is where we differ from anyone else because our club really means something and that something is often not simply on fields of green. We may constantly be angry, disappointed, despairing even of her, but we will never give up on her.

“We don’t care if we win lose or draw, what the hell do we care for we only know there’s goin’ to be a show and the Glasgow Celtic will be there”. And as long as they are, so will I.

By the way, Ralph, I don’t have any twits in the family so any chance you could give out the upcoming news in a guide for dummies?

Enjoy Aberdeen next week. Many happy memories of weekends up there. Say hello to Angus. I felt it was an especially baaaad name for a cow until I realised I had had the wool pulled over my eyes.

To digress slightly, great game in prospect today, C’mon Argentina but if Australia win convincingly we’re in for a quality final, but hey, Maradonna has flown in so an Argentinian win.
The back rows will have it and the Australian back row is just a wee bit more mobile and will play thru referee a little bit better than Argentina.
It’ll be a lesson in fast flowing rugby at it’s best, like CELTIC used to be, going forward with panache and style that excited the fans, remember those days buoys.

Australia all over the park, Argentina will have to tighten up just a little, only 10 points in it. Pocock, Australia number 8 colossal, man of the tournament so far.
100% commitment 100% of the time! Celtic take note.

Bg, always the same.
We beat what was probably the worst Dundee Utd side in decades after the horror show on Thursday and they want to feed us humble pie ffs.
If we win at Tynecastle on Wednesday, (not worried about the sheep next week) If we beat Molde, If we beat Ajax and do enough against Fenerbahce, then and only then, would I give Deila an opportunity to get a plane rather than a canoe back to Norway.

Devoy45

A hard man to please! Nobody is asking for you to eat humble pie. I ate lots of it last year and don’t plan to eat much more. It does take a lot of courage to admit you’ve made a mistake and I was mistaken about Deila last year. I don’t plan to be mistaken again. If Deila does all of the above I would be chuffed because like you, I am a Celtic supporter and always want my team to do well.

Reply to  Devoy45

Devoy, I would be delighted to win these games and not necessarily all of them, but, the little faith I had in him completely evaporated with the Malmo debacle, Thursday night merely confirmed to me that the guy hasn’t got it. I can take defeats, but not in the manner that have been typical of many European matches under his tenure and that is the only place he can be judged, possibly with the exception of Aberdeen at Pittodrie or the Jammed Farts at Swinecastle.
Looking around Celtic Park today speaks volumes.

Correct andybhoy. He’s not got it. Can’t believe fans would be kidded by beating a shit team.

The result and performance was good today…so why not a good performance in every game? Why so awfully lame in Malmo and Molde? Why so poor? There are still vital questions to be answered. The handshake and hug between Commons and Ronny looked genuine…but did you watch Collins’ face when he slapped hands with Commons?…he looked away at the pitch, no eye contact whatsoever and a frozen “I don’t see you” expression on his coupon. Collins is like a cancerous growth, and needs cut out or the “problem” is going to fester under the surface for a while then reappear.
For me this team still has to make amends for the previous Malmo/Molde shite. They need to beat Hearts, Aberdeen, Molde and Ajax, and do it with style to rekindle my belief and trust in them. I never shouted and swore so much at the Tv than I did last Thursday, and never was so disappointed by a Celtic team’s lack of ability than in that game.

Funkyy,
Brilliantly put and sums up most of what I feel.
The Collins blanking Kris when he was subbed (as Kris made the effort to show unity, at least publicly) said it all for me.
Ronny Delia had Collins and Kennedy landed on him. I’d get the latter two out and let RD choose who HE wants to replace them, not PL to choose. Also, if no consistency after that then RD would need to go. But not before he gets a chance with his own assistants.
Some great play today and must say I like the look of Simunovec. He strolled it and two great efforts from distance. Great to see young Kieran Tierney get MoM.
I remember thinking I was watching a master-class in how to be an attacking full-back. Fantastic prospect.

Given the general stereotype of Italian teams/players being excellent defensive tacticians, why oh why don’t we get an Italian to coach the defence? There must be someone over there who’d love a crack at coaching at Celtic.

Its all about the coaching.

Ronnie has a vision. Most of us bought into it.
I say he stays, but with an improved coaching team to see if he can fulfil the vision.

Well the world is rosy again 5-0 all sins & ill feeling forgotten.
I don’t think so you fucking Norwegian kipper piss off & take your shit team and staff with you.
Promote the development team & get some real passion & pride back in wearing the jersey.
I would rather support a team of kids than a team of prima donnas.
Commons was bang on the money to give those dicks on the bench a spray against Molde.
Hail Hail!
