Celtic Diary Thursday 20 August: Even Berget Looked Shocked

The picture above shows the immediate reaction of former Celt Jo Inge Berget after he scored the second goal for Malmo as they went down 3-2 to Celtic last night in Glasgow.

He wasn’t the only one having difficulty in coming to terms with the fact that his goals, both very well taken, give Malmo hope of winning a tie that looked to be over before most fans had settled in for the game.

Celts were two up through Leigh Griffiths and Nir Biton within twelve minutes-it might have been ten but I hadn’t come down from the ceiling to check- an were threatening to make not only the second leg a formality, but the second half as well.

Pace , creativity, strength and passion were all there and Malmo didn’t know what had hit them.

Unfortunately, for long periods in the second half, Celtic seemed to have forgotten what had hit Malmo as well, and Berget scored a terrific volley from where one of our defenders should have been, and the Swedes suddenly grew about six inches each.

But, Leigh Griffiths scored a typical strikers header when he barged a defender to loop the ball over the keeper, and the natural sense of order was restored.

For a minute or two. A nervy Celtic seemed to settle for this, and ceded more possession than they ought to have, and were unable to step back up to the dizzy heights of what had been one of the best performances of the Deila era thus far.

With the referee awarding five minutes of injury time, and Stefan Johansen opting to argue with a forward instead of concentrating on the game, and the mood spreading, only Nir biton and virgil van dijk seemed bothered about clearing the ball. Unhappily, they bumped into each other, the ball broke to Berget, who although we remember him as shite, and the players probably do as well, should at least have had someone near him.

Malmo celebrated like they’d won the Cup, and bizarrely Celtic fans, although ahead in the tie and having proved they are a vastly superior side, felt like we’d just been beaten.

Just to remind you.

Celtic 3, Malmo 2.

Okay, they have a couple of away goals, and only need to score one without reply to go through, but another way of putting it is Celtic simply need to avoid defeat in Sweden to progress.

Something which our away form in qualifiers suggests we are more than capable of. Especially with Leigh Griffiths on fire at the moment.

Malmo manager Age Hareide was a little relieved at full time, but generously helped Ronny Deila to prepare his team talk for the second leg;

“It was a terrible start for us, losing two goals so early in the game. I don’t know what happened, but credit to the boys for getting back in the game. “At 2-1, we had control of the match and Celtic looked tired. ”

Maybe bored rather than tired.

“We saw against Inverness Caley Thistle on Saturday that they do not have the legs for 90 minutes.

“Then we made silly mistakes and you cannot do that at this level. But credit to the boys they worked their way back into the game and made it 3-2.”

Then their keeper, Johan Wiland,  decided to edit the speech, and add a little more;

“They are pigs, all of them, that’s the way it is, You just have to try to stay cool and do what we have to do on the pitch. Leigh Griffiths, well, I don’t know what to say, he behaved like a child, tugging shirts all the time.”

“There were some players who talked a lot. You probably know who I mean. They have a captain [Scott Brown] and a few others who like to talk. But that’s the way it is at this level. One player who came on [Nadir Ciftci] was not particularly nice. The first thing he wanted to do when he came on was to talk. He had more focus on that than his performance. And I don’t think it was to their advantage that they were running around focusing on other things.”

There there, now, you’ll be alright.

Celtics players should take more care in the return, and not hurt this delicate little flower. No tugging his shirt, no swearing, and above all no rough stuff, as it would be terrible if one of them should mistime a jump while attacking from a corner and put both knees into his kidneys.

Hang on, I’ve seen this film, where a manager gets all excited after a one goal defeat at Celtic Park. Anyone else remember it  ?

The phrase ”men against boys” doesn’t exactly spring to mind but, in the business of one football manager out-witting and mildly ridiculing another, Martin O’Neill offered Graeme Souness the proverbial knee in the crotch at Ewood Park last night. Deservedly, and with no little panache, Celtic went through to the third round of the UEFA Cup after this alleged Battle of Britain in a noisy corner of Lancashire.

In the end it proved no battle, and nor were there any grudges. Nor, ultimately, was there much bravado afterwards from Souness, a man who had disparaged Celtic’s play in the first leg in Glasgow two weeks ago, but who last night was suddenly doing a decent impression of a peacock whose strut and feathers had been brutally hacked. A chastened Souness at least got one thing right: Blackburn can now concentrate on the Premiership.

Ronny Deila was a little peturbed at how things turned out. As you can imagine;

“Of course we can beat Malmo away, that’s for sure. They have to attack us and that can suit us.

“It doesn’t scare me. We know they are a good team but we are ahead by one goal. We were also ahead when we played Qarabag and defended well over there.

“Of course you get disappointed when you concede a goal in the last second but it happened and we have to look at it overall

“We are one goal ahead and they have to beat us in Malmo. It could be a better result but it is still an okay result.

“We played well in the first half, especially at the start of the game when we were all over them. But it was disappointing in the end.”

“They scored with the two chances they had but we have to see how it is after two legs. They have to beat us in Malmo.

“We are very irritated with the last thing that happened in the game but we have to move on and know we are ahead.

“We haven’t conceded goals from set plays this season, that’s one of first. We had two players going for same challenge and the ball bounced down to their player.

“Those are the small details. We had enough people in the box to take care of their players.

“But we scored three goals as well and that’s positive. We are ahead before the second game. I think we had good control of the game and had good chances.

“I’m very satisfied with that. We now have to produce it in Malmo.”

So, what can we take from last nights game, apart from a one goal lead ?

James Forrest was outstanding. Leigh Griffiths scored twice. Stuart Armstrong , and if you saw his face during Zadok the Priest you wouldn’t be surprised, was relishing every minute of the occasion, and put in an excellent shift.

The first half was total football at its best. Maybe Celtic can’t keep that pace up, not yet anyway, but they really need to kill teams off when they are in that form, because as last night showed, and the recent league games as well, it’s virtually impossible to lift yourelf back to that level if things start to go a little awry.

Perhaps thats what lead to the nerves, and maybe thats why concentration wasn’t as high as it should have been. One thing that did occur to me was it’s all very well having a big crowd roaring you on, but it’s quite another to ignore it, sit back and feel content with what you have done so far.

Theres a saying i heard somewhere, about never being able to have too much money, because if thats how you feel, you’ve obviously never had too little.

In the same way, you can never score enough goals, and the next time we go a couple ahead, we should remember that.

There is a pattern emerging, Celtic , unusually if you know the history, seem to have forgotten that a game is ninety minutes long, and need to keep focused for that length of time.

Otherwise, it will bite you in the arse.

Like the Diary author who compared Berget to a donkey, and put pictures of babies laughing when Kilmarnock threatene to get a result at Rugby Park.

From now on every team and every player we face is a world beater.

Well, nearly every team.

Some people are already making plans for the return game…

Still feeling like someone picked my pocket. Bit naive for both goals. Ball wtaching at the first and static for the second. Need to coach that out of us. That said we will defo score over there. COYBIG!

City sign Otamendi http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/34002463
Time to go back for Denayer per CQN? He now fifth in line behind Kompany, Mangala, Demichelis and otamendi. Wont even make the bench and cant be happy with this development.

Surely 4M-5M would seal the deal with City.

Boyota looked nervy last night and his distribution was very poor.

Certainly worth asking the question re Denayer but I doubt £4-£5m is going to leave Bold Peter’s account.
Might be a problem with wages too after City gave him a new deal very recently.
Boyata still a work in progress, lets give him 6 months and see where he’s at before jumping to conclusions.

We won.
We were the better side
We scored more goals than Salzburg managed over two legs.
We started our season 3 months later than Malmo
Have played 17 less games.

Their Manager has been off the mark with all his accounts.

We can and will score goals at Malmo.

If only Johansen has shot at an angle rather than dead centre! 3 would have killed them. We died down after 20 mins and even the crowd were lulled. Need some players with fire in bellies rather than quiet personas.

Armstrong – still no seen him do it in Europe. injured or just blowing out his @rse after 60 mins. Ciftci still a mile off the pace and not on same wavelength of the team, He kept running towards Izzy and Mackay Steven rather than into a space or taking defender away.

We looked knacked by the end and amazingly to say but could have did with Mulgrew on to help shore uip and also protect at set pieces.

But hey, it was a win and a great experience, good to see wee Jamesy back on form even if lassie behind me kept shouting “Come on the wee boy!”

Ronnie really needs a good talk to the team about when we are on top, he also needs to kick a few asses.
I am sure if we can turn up and keep focused for the return we can progress to the group stages.
Good Diary as always, keep up the good work. HH

It felt like a defeat and it was a subdued crowd that left Celtic Park last night – two careless mistakes may yet cost us dear. But then again we are still ahead and have every chance of scoring one or two goals in Sweden. Hoepfully the team will ram Malmo’s manager’s words down his throat. Maintaining absolute concentration for 90+ minutes will be essential, otherwise we’ll be facing SPFL games on Sundays till Christmas thus adding more expense to my trips back to Glasgow from London!

Charlie Saiz: I won’t let you off the hook from your previous posting, which favoured Ciftci over Griffiths! Any idea who might score you/us those goals in Malmo?
Otherwise, agree with all you’ve said here. A third goal earlier on would have opened the floodgates and put the tie way beyond reach.
We can win in Malmo and we can score goals there. All we need is a draw. If they attack more, they will also open up more and we can counter: mainly with Forrest and Griffiths.
3-1 was the real score last night and could have been more.
Now not sure about Boyata at the back and Lustig may be out.
Mulgrew in for Boyata and big Efe at right back?

By the way, Hareide comes across as an arrogant blowhard and his players aren’t much better.
“Unfit Pigs” might be enough to galvanize our bhoys?
Their goalkeeper was no flying pig with Griffith’s second goal, just a grounded porker.
I put it to you Ronny and the bhoys. Celtic are clearly a better team. Keep the heid in Malmo and remember: they called you “unfit pigs.”
Keep 11 men on the pitch and punish them all.
You can do it and we’re all behind you.
Griffiths, ya beauty!
Forrest: a force of nature. Defenders can only trip you or go for rugby tackles.Keep up the excellent work son.

The Jury was still out on Griffiths for me up till last night he’s not done anything of note at this level.
Thankfully that changed last night the boy done great but I still believe once Ciftci settles and get’s up to speed fitness wise he will be an asset against better defences.
Though that said Griffiths has to be first choice now in Malmo.
I don’t mind getting things wrong when it means players are getting things right.
btw I still think Ambrose or Mulgrew would be better at CB next week than Boyata he’s too risky ..yes even riskier than the much panned and maligned Ambrose.
Too many square balls to Van Dijk last night for my liking bud some of which put him and us under needless pressure from a side playing 2 up.
Ambrose and Mulgrew will use the ball alot better from the back I think plus both are fine facing play.

He is a flop. He scored a good goal but so did tore Andre flo!! He was garbage as a Celtic player. Total mince. Should not of been allowed to get both shots away. Good to see some fans acknowledging James performance. Said all along when he gets a run of games he will be dynamite. Whether or not it was 3-1 or 3-2 I think we would of still had o score next week so nothing changes. An early goal and they will have to throw everything at us. We are better away from home.

Forest has all the pace in the world to trouble top top defenders but and there is a but that has plagued him all along (except for a 6 week period in Lennys first Season where he and Sammy carried an injury ravaged squad for 6 weeks)his end product tends to let him down.
His final ball can be atrocious,he often overruns it into touch and like last night sometimes leaves the ball behind.
If he can address these faults then he will be worth his weight in Gold.
He worked his arse off last night though put in a very good shift and was by far the quickest thinking and moving player on the pitch.
Malmo will be worried next week our pace frightened them first half.

Berget? I never called him a flop but he wasn’t our answer at the time. He had the misfortune to be part of a struggling work in progress. He scored two goals in one match last night which is all he did for us in six months! For us, Berget WAS a flop.
None of us called him “unfit” or a “pig.”
He’s still not good enough to get in our side which might also hint that we are better than Malmo.May the better team win next Tuesday.

Ronny will have the team set up to hit them on the counter and hit them hard. We will score over there, at least one if not more. We are a superior team to them all over the pitch, let’s ram their managers word back down his throat.

Thought for the most part we played really well last night, no reason why we can’t go to Sweden and do the same again. James Forrest showed how important a player he can be when fully fit, every time he ran at the Malmo defence they were worried. Also got to mention Johansen’s work rate, never stopped chasing players down from start to finish.

The only thing I can say is Celtic looked a better team before brown started gifting them chances. Apart from a few ok build ups malmo only looked dangerous when Celtic lost cohesion and gave the ball away. I think it is a fitness thing a nd their coach is right. Malmo are a bit ahead in match fitness and anyone who’s played knows the difference. Tired passes etc after a furious onslaught. Need to make hay while the sun shines when the dominance is so prevalent

elcormaco

That was a microcosm of Ronnie at Celtic: so much to get excited about, large spells of impressive play, but poor game management and an inability to put in a full 90 minute performance. He put great stock on fitness when he came in, but the arrogant Norwegian boss of Malmo is right, we did look knackered. We also consistently pass the ball to our opponents and they only looked dangerous when we did this.

3-1 we d all have been delighted, but as soon as I saw 5 minutes injury time I knew it was not going to finish like that, and that’s frustrating, that our players can’t seem mentally to see a game out – Johannsen and his stupid posturing, Brown overly casual with headed passes inviting pressure, everyone trying to see who can give the ball away most.

Izzaguire is a complete liability now at full back. Going forward he is very decent, but if I were managing a team against Celtic I d focus all my attacking down his side and he’ll offer up chances: dive in, get booked, be caught out of position, miscue clearances, pass the ball to opponents. I almost feel sorry for him, no matter how poor his form there is no viable alternative for his position – it is the worst of Charlie’s possible positions.

Letting Matthews go so cheaply seems even more folly now, Lustig will be out surely and so Janko or Fisher are our right back options?

I disagree with the comment that Armstrong hasn’t done it at this level – a goal and a half against Inter, his driving run last night set up the beautiful first goal, his passing and crossing were always excellent, I think he brings a lot to the team.

Happy for Leigh as well, I think the way Ronnie shook his hand as he came off was an acknowledgement that he is now the no1 striker at the club.

Before the second game I d show the players some footage of the Malmo lads walking off hugging and smiling at the end of last night – they lost but carried on like they’d won- well there is another game to go and I d like to think there is enough desire in our dressing room to make sure the second leg is just as tough for Malmo as last night – we could have been 3 or 4 or 5 up before the first half ended.

That’s what makes last night so frustrating, we were for most of the game the better team and only our own failings allowed our opponent into it, now the tie is in the balance but we can go again and get a good result against them and make sure that the Malmo players and their pr*ck of a manager aren’t smiling after losing next week.

You could even see it coming in audio. I could hear it in the commentators’ vibrato, in between chatty discussions with each other instead of telling us what was going on. It is pure piss to listen to Mick McManus rambling on about what should or should not be as though he was a coaching guru then suddenly hear the commentator’s voice of doom announce they have scored. The fact his last bit of information to us listeners was GMS running down the wing then giving McManus the mike to ruminate on it, did not seem to strike him as kind of missing something for LISTENERS. They really do need to get the audio act sorted at CTV. It has to click with someone, no anyone, that sound without pictures is just that, fucking sound. No, I am not taking the result out on CTV UK. I have ranted about this till I am embarrassingly blue in the face.

Anyway, as I said, the one thing the voices did not hide was the all conquering start, aided very much by the terror created by the crowd, then the inevitable drop off till half time. I thought the commentator had laid half a dozen extra large eggs all at once when we scored the first two goals. Then the second half became almost visible as the voices gradually developed that nervous fate ridden tone of inevitability. I just knew it was a downhill slide from there on in with perhaps the odd burst of life as McManus continually assured us this team were shite. But when they scored within minutes of the re-start my butterflies went into overdrive and I heard the vision of the inevitable slackness sound once again in my ears. How did I know what would come? Simply because it has been the common element of most of our recent performances. When you drawing from 2-0 lead against Kilmarnock, a team still trying to lace its boots, and are pegged back from 4 up to fighting for 4-2 against a team with one foot in the slaughterhouse then it is easy to believe 3 is far from enough for this team in Europe. Only an idiot would claim it was a fitness problem so the Malmo boss is still crap at judging other teams. No, it is simply a question of concentration. Too many players seem to have an auto switch off button. We might be able to afford one or two now and then but when 75% of the team do it all at once and for long periods, then we are doomed. And last night was not the first time it has happened, not by a long shot. I am now convinced we have players who do not know how to handle and protect early leads. I would be far more confident of a comprehensive win and far more able to deal with the nerves if the first goal did not come till around mid way through the second half. Maybe Ronny should keep his cavalry charge till then and just have them play Quarabang away style till that point. Defeat I can take. Pseudo capitulation is unacceptable.

I meant to add that I do believe we can win in Malmo. If we defend as resolutely as we did against Quarabang then I am convinced we can not only protect our lead but get at least one away goal. The hippie just isn’t capable of doing that twice. Mind you, I did hear their best goal scorer was not playing last night. Still believe as long as the team play as they can and should.

Celtic are a better team than Malmo and getting the early goals were great. Should have capitalised and settled the tie in the first half, Johansen would killed them off if he had scored. Their heads were down at two and the extra goal would have been the end for them. Punters actually booing at a victory, what’s wrong with these people?

I’m usually a glass half-full kinda guy BUT (< big butt) – even 'though I think we're better than Malmo – we could & should have put the tie outta reach by HT – I'm really worried we've shot ourselves in the foot and have blown our chances.

Sorry to be such a misery guts, but, I don't really see us keeping a clean sheet in Malmo and have serious doubts that we can go through. I'm just hoping against hope that Malmo's luck has finally run out – they didn't deserve 2 goals last night or the 3 against Salzburg – and that – with an inspired display by Craig Gordon and the bounce of the ball – we might be the lucky ones for once next week (I wonder if a few thousands Hail Hail Mary's might help)

Judging by Lustig's reaction, there's no way he'll be fit enough. If it was me, I'd play Darnell Fisher at RT as I think he's more reliable then either Efe or (jury still out) Janko.

Yeah Tam The Tim, I couldn’t believe my ears when people started booing at the final whistle. The “last kick of the ball” goal felt a bit like a boot in the baws, but that’s no excuse.
I said to the guy sitting beside me in the first half last night that the sloppiness and carelessness that creeps into our passing and possession in the middle of the park was going to kill us. That’s 6 goals in the the last 3 games we have given away through slack and careless play.
We will have to be a lot tighter in the return leg because they offer much more of a goal threat than Qarabag did.

Frank McGaaaaarvey

Still feckin raging at losing that stupid avoidable goal in the very last minute. It may make a huge difference to the tie but the timing of it is a huge kick in the Niagaras. If they scored in say the 70th minute or so it wouldn’t have hurt as much. How they forced their way up the park for the 1st goal when we had plenty chances to retain possession is beyond me. Then there was the Lustig ball watching. As for the 2nd……

BUT, we played great in spells and I can’t fault the overall effort of the team because for 94 minutes we were all very happy Bhoys and Ghirls. With cool heads, concentration and an ability to keep the ball of course we can put these smug arrogant feckers in their place. BTW, there is no reason whatsoever (barring injury) now for Leigh to be kept out the team for Ciftci. Let him pick up on his fitness with a few reserve outings. Leigh is well on the the way to becoming a Hoops legend after last nights performance.

School boy stuff at times, 5 minutes to go and they can’t keep possession and play the game out. Scott Brown needs to calm down a bit, got a feeling the second leg will be a feisty affair and a sending off could be costly.

I’ve always doubted that Deila is the amazing tactitian he’s made out to be while everyone gives him full support and yet I’m confident about going through while everyone else is nervous. The tables have turned.

Malmo are a decent team but they gave the ball away a lot and they had to resort to fouling Forest as they couldn’t deal with him at all. They are more than beatable, we could put the game beyond them in 15 minutes if we start the same way we did last night. We already have what we need to progress, we have the lead and the tie is ours to throw away. Only an epic cock up can ruin it.

We had a huge amount of space between their flat midfield and defence in the first half but they played an anchor man in the second half and it worked to an extent. If they do this on Tuesday as well as doubling up on Forest then there should be space for Brown and Biton to get time on the ball and also for whoever plays RB. Then we’ll need the forward players to give them effective options for an out/final ball. We more than have the ability to exploit their weaknesses.

Watched the game in Cascais Portugal last night, the majority of Portugese thought the Celts were well in control. Two lapses in defence allowed them two goals. If we score one in Malmo, Griffiths can do it, Hareide can eat his words. Agree with the comment that Fisher should have been one of the subs as Lustig has been carrying his injury in the last few games.
Surprised at the fans bailing and allowing Malm the appearance that they had just won the Champions League.

So our players are pigs who pull jerseys according to their keeper. Wonder what he thinks of the Malmo player who blatantly barged Virgil out of the way as he went to challenge for the ball as it came over at their second goal. That said how many more times are we going to keep throwing away, or failing to add to, a two-goal lead?

Don’t understand the Armstrong love-in; great work for the goal and his shot came very close, but that was it! Also Johansen is starting to remind me of Gravesen; lots of running but adding no real quality, again the first goal being the exception. GMS offered nothing off the bench so I’m not sure who can come into the team for Tuesday but Forrest/Griffiths must start. The starting XI for Saturday could be interesting were it not for the fact that result means nothing to me in the context of Tuesday; that game is all that matters!
How Izzy and Brown conspired to gift possession to them in advance of their first goal is beyond me. Under no pressure and they opened the door. I also thought we had them on the ropes and stood back for an eight count letting them find their feet. We must become ruthless!!

Another question: how much do our top Bhoys earn per week: Van Dijk, Brown, Griffiths?
How would we pay Hooper and Denayer from our biscuit tin?

Well, after a good night’s sleep, I have had time to get the depressed feelings out of my system and I’m feeling confident that we’ll not make the same mistakes twice. Nearly every post on here today has identified the good and the bad points about our players, so no need to repeat them all…..but we really need to be ruthless when we get on top, individual players have to stop showboating (Johanson) and concentrate on what’s going on around them. I think their manager is trying to wind us up and suck our players into personal battles in the next game, maybe hoping for sendings off and us to lose our discipline and game plan. He knows that they got out of jail last night, they were close to being eliminated and he knows that if Malmo start the next match in the same way they won’t be so lucky again.
There’s nothing unforgivable about making a mistake, only about stupidly repeating the same mistake. Let’s take the game to them and not let them off the hook this time.
And a big thanks to their manager and goalkeeper for doing our team talk, I don’t think the players will need any extra incentive now. The best way to answer them is to beat them in their own stadium. HH

Yes dissapointing to give away a goal in the very last minute and yet I think I saw enough to think we can avoid defeat in Sweden and progress to he Champions League proper. Given the comments about our bhoys tells me they are learning how to conduct themselves in European competition – lessons learned against Juve! As for the Sheep Shagger songs I have a Danish colleague and she told me all the Nordic countries have this joke about Scotland. Must be a hangover from their Viking past. I will be very happy if we can avoid defeat and oink ourselves into the next round. I would start Griffiths every game

Devoy. All our players are on a 15 k wage cap. This is why ledley Matthews samaras and others did not and have not signed new deals. Some of the bigger players are on higher appearance fees but that is the basic. The squad is on 90k a man to qualify

Thought Johansen was partly responsible for loss of concentration at Malmo second goal with his little drama before the corner. Still feel we can get a result over there if we can produce the same kind of performance we put on at Qarabag

Getting tired of the way malmo management and players are constantly mouthing off, not very professional. I hope ronny goes with commons it would be the perfect game for him, I’ve got a feeling ronny will go with commons.
Everything will be OK. Hail hail

@London celtic, you’re right. How many of our recent goals have been with headers? It seems everybody has forgotten how to shoot….Johanson couldn’t even do it from close in (twice). Commons is the only guy who REGULARLY takes a pop from outside the box and when no-one expects it. He should be on from the start in the return match.
The team talk should not be overly technical and should go along the lines of “Get intae them!!!”

‘supporting Celtic is never easy, but it is always worthwhile’ The Bunnet.

Celtic will score in Sweden. If we were going into it 3-1 mibbie – just mibbie – we would be complacent, as it stands it is indeed a case of GITFUKENINTITHUM!

hail hail.

I was willing to give Malmo fans the benefit of the doubt – the sheep song was just silly, but not really nasty. However, now that I’ve heard about the abuse handed out to young Jordan Larsson, they’ve completely lost my respect. Sure, there are bad elements amongst most large supports, but no excuses are acceptable.

In passing, I’m starting to think that all the name calling by Malmo players & staff, both before and especially after the match is a deliberate attempt to rile Celtic players and get them seeing red. Celtic need to be sure they don’t let these mind games get to them, otherwise we could easily end up with 10 or even 9 men in Malmo (Broony? Johannsen? Griff?????/) which seems to be exactly what all this Pigs & Children stuff is intended to do.
