Celtic Diary Wednesday August 19 : Here We Go Again….

Ronny Ready For Malmo Challenge !

Celts Can Do It !

Scots Champions Have Enough To See Off Swedes !

Just a few of the headlines you won’t see today.

So bollocks to them.

Theres some guff in the papers today, including a Celtic Scout who went public over company policy, ( read it here. David moss interview Tell me if theres anything in it we didn’t know already.)  which lead to the groundbreaking ( Ibrox Evening Times ) news that;

Celtic scout admits Virgil van Dijk is expected

to leave the club this month

Which is exactly what Ronny said back in May. The gaffer also added that van Dijk mught well fancy a crack at the group stages should Celtic qualify.

Any decent rag, on a day when the profile of Scottish football could be raised with a great night of top class football in front of a massive , passionate crowd would have at the very least tried

Van Dijk May Stay If Hoops Succeed

Ach. fuck ’em.

Champions League play off day, generally accepted to be the longest day of the year for most of us, followed by the shortest hour and a half, should be one of the highlights of the season. Dreams to be dreamt, songs to be sung, and hopes to be hoped.

And of course, beer to be drank, fags to be smoked, and wives to be hiding from.

Ronny will be ready for this game. The players will be up for it. When it comes to the crunch, Celtic will do what they have to do to get a result.

Image result for i had to work late

Celtic manager Ronny Deila

The manager looked relaxed when he told a press conference;

We want to be in the Champions League. That’s the goal, I’ve said that since coming to this club.

“Now we have two games to reach it. The most important thing is to win and get a good result.”

“I know the only thing I can do something about is the performance of the team, and I trust my team,”

“I can’t remember when we last lost a game and the team is in good shape, we have a lot of confidence.

“We also know that to get a clean sheet is very important in European football.

“We just have to be the best we can be and if we do that and don’t succeed then we’re not good enough. But I think if we are at our best, it’s going to be tough for Malmo.”

“and you in the checked shirt-what the fucks that on your head ? “

If he’s relaxed and confident, then so will the players be.

Mikael Lustig was so laid back he was almost horizontal;

“Both teams have Norwegian managers and like to play football on the ground, get the full-backs forward, and play positive football,”

“Malmo struggled a little bit at the beginning of the season but they have brought some new players in and look stronger now so it will be tough.

“We have been solid in Europe so far and have played very well in defence against Qarabag. Our confidence is good now so I feel we are ready.”

As usual, the team more or less picks itself, with Gordon, Lustig, van dijk, Boyata and Izaguirre forming the back line, and you’d be confident that Scott Brown and Nir Biton will do the linking betwen defence and attack. There is a chance that Charlie mulgrew could be preferred at left back, but thats probably how it will be in the second leg. James Forrest could also start ahead of Gary Mackay Steven, who is not quite adjusting to the higher level yet, but Stefan Johansen and Stuart Armstrong have, and they will have key roles tonight.

 Then its the dilemma, do we go for the pace and awareness of free scoring Leigh Griffiths, or hope that Nadir Ciftci , who has spent most of the season sitting on his arse-on and off the field- can finally find the net.

 The wording of the question may offer a hint as to what I think, but Ronny will probably think differently. Despite yesterday claiming that players don’t go straight into games like this when asked about a possible inclusion of Scott Allan, who , incidentally, has his own personal Celtic shirt,

Embedded image permalink

he will probably persevere with the former Dundee United player.

Still, if he does wear them down, Griffiths can exploit that. As could a fresh Gary Mackay Steven in the latter stages. Charlie Mulgrew would be on hand to replace any of the starters who tire or are injured.

 It’s a squad game, and we have the squad to do it.

But what of Malmo ?

You’d be pushed to find any decent or informative article on them in the mainstream media, and to be honest, the best assessments i’ve sen come from the Diary readers who have already watched them. ( See yesterdays replies )

Malmo beat Salzburg. Salzburg were without their talismanic striker Jonathan Soriano, who we remember, with a bit of a shudder, from last season.

 That would have helped the Swedes, and oddly enough, wasn’t mentioned in any of manager Age Hareide’s pre game rambles.

Though they do appear to have hit a bit of form;

Notice anything ?  Domestically, they have scored in every single away game so far. They failed to score in Salzburg, which suggests a different approach.

Backed up by this;

For all the talk of Berget, have a look at this;

Goals Home Away
J. Berget 7 3 4
M. Rosenberg 7 5 2
M. Wolff Eikrem 6 4 2
N. Djurjic 3 1 2
P. Cibicki 3 2 1
V. Rodic 2 2 0
E. Johansson 2 1 1
A. Mehmeti 2 2 0
O. Lewicki 2 1 1
K. Arnason 1 1 0
S. Kroon 1 0 1
E. Rakip 1 0 1
E. Adu 1 0 1
Y. Yotún 1 0  1

The Norwegian is their top domestic scorer, presumably because he has worked out that a ridiculous beard confuses defenders;

Malmo and former Celtic player Jo Inge Berget speaks to the press ahead of his side's meeting with his former team

My beard?It’s nothing special. I had a beard before and it’s grown longer now. Maybe it can give me some strength but it’s just to look the part.”

Er, what part ?

And look, the guy with the checked shirt from the Ronny conference is in this picture as well.

A trawl of the web found some other interesting stats, but nothing to worry about. They do score goals, they can defend, but the evidence is that they will be a little cagey tonight.

When Salzburg beat them 2-0, it wasn’t until the second half when they broke the deadlock-and to be honest, it took a calm heads and a set piece-brilliantly worked -to do it;

Salzburg goal

On the same link, there is a link to highlights of the return leg. Watch out for the penalty claim in the 38th minute.  We really should have been playing Salzburg.

Malmo will be without their other top scorer Marcus Rosenberg, who is suspended, and defensive midfielder Enoch Kofi Adu, which again points to damage limitation and making sure the tie is still live when the clubs go to Sweden.

All the old cliches, noisy but patient crowd, early goal, and so on will be trotted out. By me, for instance, but the key to this game in my mind is going ahead early.

Unfortunately, I think that the two players most likely to get you an early goal-Griffiths and Mackay Steven- before the opposition settle will start on the bench.

Thats not to say, however, that Celtic won’t win the game-in fact, a 2-0 win is probably the most likely outcome, and that discipline and professionalism we saw in the two ties against Qarabag means anything more is unlikely. Certainly the side won’t push for more in the old gung ho style that might be pleasing on the eye, it’s not always, er, productive.

I’d be happy with 2-0. So would you. 1-0 wouldn’t be a disaster, and neither would an away goal. Celts are more than capable of scoring away from home, but i’d rather we didn’t have to.

The new European style is about to get another airing at Celtic Park. Maybe it was time for a change.

Still a bit nervy though

And it doesn’t pay to be over confident;

I am so confident Scott Allan won’t go to Celtic that if he does I will buy a Celtic season ticket and give it away to someone who RTs this.

Hey-how about some praise for the media ?

Well, okay.

The BBC have certainly become more even handed and balanced over the last week or so. Tom Jones, the Welsh singer, has been sacked from TV show “The Voice ” , without any warning, proving they can fuck old people as well.

Right, before the butterflies get the better of me, I’m away to do something constructive.

And you can do something constructive later, if you are in this part of the ground;

How come the BBC News says that ManU played a Champions League tie last night, but the SMSM always insist to point out that we’re playing a qualifier.

I’m sure it’s all honest pedanticism 🙂
and that all of Scotland’s media is right behind us and is wishing us all the very best, in the hope that we can increase Scotland’s UEFA co-efficient and give each SPFL team some drop down cash to the equivalent of nearly a Scott Allan per team.

Also noticeable how keen the SMSM are to remind us of last seasons CL qualifiers, which is totally irrelevant to tonight. – r do Level 5 also do the PR for Maribor?

Another brilliant Diary, don’t know how you keep it up.
(Anyway, I s’pose that’s your wee personal secret!)
I actually clicked on the link to the interview with somebody called Moss. Can’t really comment as I quickly thought “what the fuck am I doing reading this pish?” and exited.
We showed on Saturday what we’re capable of (forget the late errors).
Nobody can live with us if we go like that, led on by our Talismanic Captain. Ronny’s bang on. If we play well and don’t progress, we’re not good enough. I agree with Ronny, however. WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH.
I hope he gives Leigh the nod to start as it’s down to proven vs unproven (Leigh vs Ciftci)
I’m quietly confident and just hope for good reffing and full concentration.
HH
PS That was a nasty (‘though v.clever) use of the anagram on Magners. I think it’s pish anyway but having seen that it’ll never pass my lips again. COYBIG.

elcormaco

Midfiled will be the area that decides the victors, no surprise there. I am basing my view on never even having seen Malmo play, but the mix of Brown, Bitton, Armstrong, Johannsen and either Forrest or GMS gives us a real good balance in there of battle, craft, desire and goal scoring threat. Its on that basis that I m going for a squeaky win tonight.
never mind Bergets beard btw, he has at least got rid of that pathetic ponytail he spported while in the hoops.

Just checked the BBC item on how to get happy….. the sixth item on the list was

Have goals to look forward to

So in a moment of delirious deja vu, I’ve stuck a fiver on Celtic to win by 4 or more goals…..13/1 with Paddy Power…….happiness undoubtedly comes gift wrapped in a betting slip. (Couldn’t specifically get the legendary 7-0, but I’ll take the 4-0 🙂 )

jpm 88, I share your feelings about animal abuse and find it hard to comprehend, we humans have a long way to evolve before we are the finished article.
Now, only 2 hours to go!!!! I’m tempted to run along to the town centre and put a correct score bet on (4-0), but since I already put on a couple of accumulators yesterday I’ll just leave it at that. But I have a helluva hunch we’re going to score a few goals today. Like I said yesterday “f*ck patience”, the drawback with that is that the longer the game goes without us scoring, the more settled and comfortable they become and then the nerves start and the crowd gets restless. Our big advantage is the atmosphere in the stadium when the match starts…attack them at pace from the off, while they are still trying to settle, and get the early goal…the crowd will spur us on and Malmo will crack and we’ll score a few more. I don’t fancy going there with only a 1 goal lead, my ticker wouldn’t survive that. This is a great opportunity to put the tie beyond them and almost guarantee our place in the Champions League sections, and that’s how we should be viewing it. COYBIG!!!!!!

This has to be comfortable at least, their joint top scorer is one of our worst players in decades. Two legs for a £20m windfall, failure is not an option. I shouldn’t be nervous but there are a few jitters. Tonight, Deila has a chance to show how for the team has come since last years record breaking embarrassment and win over doubters, like me. Stick yer deid auld firm and the spfl, this is what its all about.

Berget will never score like that again as long as he’s got a hole in his arse. Personally I hope it self-seals and the arse-hole moves higher up his poxy frame. Like adjoining his fucking gub. What a fanny.
End of day, they’ve GOT to beat us in Sweden.
I don’t think they will.
I can deal with it (tonight’s gifts to Malmo). Hope you can too.

Berget was a joke among the players even months after he left. We had an amazing half hour and a good 15 mins in the 2nd half but its only half time. Tuesday is a £20m game and that’s the one that matters. If Deila plays the youth team and gets pumped by Dundee Utd then so be it, Tuesday is the big one. Griffiths was a class apart tonight and I hope Lustig isn’t too bad, he looked distraught and utterly devastated when he went past, I’ll say a wee prayer for him before I go to bed.

Aye Doc, I think we see similar things.
If you check my recent posts you’ll see how I feel about Leigh Griffiths.
Pissed off still tonight, but very, very hopeful of going through.
Prayer is not on my ‘agenda’ but I’d gladly pray if I thought it would help Mikael Lustig get fit for next week. Impossible to replace, IMHO. He looked like he knew it was serious. But, Que Sera.

You could see that 2nd Malmo goal coming…thanks to Johanson. He starts f*cking about trying to delay their corner, gets booked and takes everybody else’s mind off their marking job. I don’t know what he’s trying to prove lately, but he should cut out the “hard man” attitude and concentrate on his football. He was an underachiever tonight and failed to put the ball in the net with only the keeper to beat. Now we ‘re gonna walk a tightrope in the return match, and it shouldn’t have been so. At 2-0 we were comfortable and only needed to keep focused, but I fear we may have shot ourselves in the foot.
And the worst thing is, if anything could be worse, that dipstick Keech Jackson and his brethren will be writing their usual shite even as we ponder this result.
So disappointing to throw away what was a gilt-edged advantage/opportunity.

Just watched the game thought that Celtic have this lack of self belief after going up against a poor team only to catastrophise. Brown is great then terrible great then terrible defusing attacks with intelligence then over confidently giving the ball way. Griffiths is s gem if we can’t beat this team we don’t deserve it. I don’t know why you bother commenting on the press fuck them they’re fickle Huns who are still smarting from the demise. We can do this. They aren’t that good

Vinnie

Ps
You know what I think ronnys problem is as a coach 1 he’s too much like infill and doesn’t detach himself enough from what’s going on otherwise he wouldn’t make stupid substitutions. Griffiths had another goal in him maybe I’m wrong andthat knock he took warranted a substitutionI also think heshe’s given brown and johansen too much latitude for petulance sometimes Brown’s antics work but johansen is a brat who is only so because he’s guaranteed a place in the big games. His antics contributed to the second goal. There was a forever to defend you don’t fuck around here. It’s ok to fuck around in less dangerous scenarios. Idiot on a positive note I think we can actually beat this team again. Ronny has to be a better disciplinarian. I can see his thinking trying to get the balance right and not stifling personalities but for fuck sake johansen is accountable. So was the numpty who back headered it to Berger

Isn’t it nice to have somewhere welcoming like E-Tims to come to when you want to avoid looking at or hearing 1 word from the mainstream media, cause you just know it will do your head in?

BTW – When he shows what he’s capable of – and how much he plays for the jersey (those 2 tackles he won chasing the ball in the 1st half were clean btw!) James Forrest deserves 100% backing from the Celtic support. Last night he was beyond criticism. Top class performance. It’s almost as if the host of Jinky has started taking over his body.

In my head we won 3-1, they were lucky for the 2nd goal, I have real faith that we will also win in Sweden, player for player we were better in each position, Forrest played a blinder, I am eating humble pie here for my frustrating comment I made last week about oor Jamesie, well done and a similar result over there is on the horizon.

HonestJohnBhoy
8 years ago

Did anyone think that the first half looked like the new Ronnie way and the second we slipped back into our old habits? We seemed to get very nervous when they scored and lost our shape. Sadly I could see that 2nd coming as we seemed to lose concentration arguing before the corner. Still, 3 – 2 up at half time, could be worse and I can see us scoring. Lustig a big worry though

Dan The Man
8 years ago

Too many underperformed last night Biton Brown Johansen ,the protection was not there for the defenders from midfield after going 2-0 up our passing in midfield lost it’s way. If this continues we have no chance in Sweden. We have been doing this a lot lately. If we had locked down the midfield last night we would not have lost the first goal and had a few scares when Malmö stole possession from very poor passing in midfield. Then Effy the bomb scare came on. Why is he still at CP ,no harm to the guy but one pass from the right into central midfield went straight to Malmo and everyone was out of position , if we are serious buy a Good ! Left back to challenge Izzy get rid of Ambrose ,another decent quality CB when VD goes and a striker who plays in the box. The number of crosses Forrest put in only to find no one in the 6 yard box was criminal.Great finishing from Griffiths ,took his goals well but needs support. Where did UEFA find that ref? Half the challenges on Forrest last night were Red card offencrs blowing for all the standard easy things foul throws but can’t see the Malmo player who kicked Forrest black and blue have a kick at Johansen before the corner leading to the goal. He also gave a free kick when Brown was flattened by No 5 then proceeded to book both players. Fed up with dross euro refs at Celtic games. Tighten up in midfield ,no cavalier fullbacks and we might just get through this.

tomo
8 years ago

I was wrong.Leigh Griffiths is a proper striker. I think we can still do it. Some of the football we played last night was a class above Malmo. It will be tough but I think we will definitely score at least once and get some kind of draw.The team is playing good football and even though if we do not get through to the champions league it will not be a disaster.I think we could get pretty far in the Europa league this year and get some big games.

highseastim
8 years ago

My take on last night, as I said after the draw, I didn’t believe Malmo were the best option, and Ronny was way out saying that whoever we got would not be any better than Qarabaq as Malmo were clearly a step up. I believe my fears will be realised next week and our CL participation will be over, this is not what I hoped for but just being a realist.

As for last night pass marks only to Gordon, Lustig and Armstrong(whilst they were still fit and Griffiths. The defence and midfield constantly gave possession away and whilst they were on the front foot they eased off and allowed Malmo a route back into the game.

The thought of a back four in Sweden of Efe,Boyata, Izzy and Van Dijk(his head is elsewhere) scares the sh*t out of me!! We blew a great chance last night, and while we were dropping like flies the Swedes cruised through the game, in fact I would say Gordon had more important saves to make.than the Malmo keeper.

Gordon. Some great saves as usual

Lustig. Was having a good game, until he went off and you could see by the shattered look on his face that it is probably a recurrence of his injury.

Boyata. Some good blocks and tackles but gives the ball away too easily

Van Dijk Tried his best to Marshall the defence, but poor distribution and should have taken control at the second Malmo goal.

Izzy terrible distribution

Brown and Biton after a bright star both were caught out several times in possession and lost out consistently with yet again poor passing.

Johansen Started off like a whirlwind, but poor after the first 15-20 minutes, losing possession too many times and too interested in getting into arguments with the opposition.

Forrest Ran about like a headless chicken for most of the match, but nothing new there.

Armstrong I thought he was having a great game until his injury.

Griffiths drifted in and out of the game, but you can’t knock two goals in Europe.

Efe, Mackey-Steven and Cifcti. Efe as usual was a bombscare and what was he supposed to be doing at Malmo’s second goal. The other two offered nothing, especially Ciftci and I remain to be impressed by him.

In summing up, a fantastic start to the game, thrown away, as the team thought they were on easy street.
