Celtic Diary Tuesday August 18: Managers Spar Ahead Of Euro Tie

Malmo manager Age Hareid ( pronounced Aged Airhead ) fired a couple of salvos as his side warmed up to the idea of a big night at a big club. He doesn’t seem to rate Celtic;

“I said last year – and I meant it – that Salzburg were better than Olympiakos [Malmo’s Group A rivals last term] . And my professional judgement now, after the experience I have as coach, is the same this time.

“Salzburg are a better team than Celtic. Celtic are a good team. We have every respect for Celtic. But the truth is Salzburg are better and showed it in the Europa League last year too.”

Ronny Deila, adopting the character of psychotic Mr. Blond from Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs character, replied;

Actually, what he really said was;

“We’ll see on Wednesday. That’s when they have to show they are better.

“European matches are tough – you win or lose on the smallest details. We’ll fight to show Hareide is wrong. The pressure is on him after what he said.

“We will find out on Wednesday if they are better.”

That’s because Tarantino is a notorious litigator who would have pursued Ronny for using one of his lines. Have you seen that Direct Line insurance advert ? Harvey Keitel has to give all his money to Tarantino for using the Winston Wolf character to promote insurance policies.

Probably.

Airhead didn’t stop there. Prompted by an enthusiastic media, he continued barking, and spoke of his experience of Celtic and Scottish football…

“I’ve followed Celtic from the early days, I’m that old. I remember Jimmy
Johnstone and the team that won the European Cup.

“I watched the Final against Inter Milan when I was young. Jimmy was a fantastic player and I remember all the names – Bobby Murdoch, Bobby Lennox, Billy McNeill. And after that guys like Danny McGrain. All of them were top players of European standard back then.

“Scotland have always produced very good players. When I was playing in England in the 80s the Scotland team were better than the English. They had guys like Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Archie Gemmill.

“They’ve always produced good attacking players.

“When I was watching the Kilmarnock v Celtic game last week I was fascinated by the winger Forrest. He looked like a good old Scottish winger with pace and flair. He reminds me of Willie Johnston who I remember from his West Brom days.

“Forrest is that type of player with quick feet. He’s more of a winger than a midfielder – he’s a throwback.”

Bit harsh.

 Then he started talking about Scots he has known, and anyone else he could think of. Such as Asa Hartford , once of Manchester City , when they couldn’t afford good players.

“Asa is a close friend of mine from our days at Man City. I see a lot of him and I’ve invited him to the game in Glasgow.

“He doesn’t know too much about Celtic now. In fact I know more about them than Asa! He follows the English leagues more now as he does scouting there.

“I played with a few Scots. Tommy Hutchison was at City
as were Gerry Gow and Bobby McDonald.

“At Norwich I played with Ross Jack. We’d play five-a-sides – it was the rest of the world v England. So I was with the Scots along with Martin O’Neill. We had a good team.

“I know Martin well because we played together at City and Norwich. We actually had a reunion at Norwich in 2003 and Martin brought his Celtic team down for a game.

“When I had the Norway national team I’d go over to Aston Villa while Martin was there to watch my player John Carew. He’s a good man.

“I met Scotland twice when I was Norway manager so I know all about them. We’re practically related to the Scots!

“Scottish football fascinates me because I think there is a lot of potential in the players there.

“Since Ronny has come to Celtic it has strengthened the Scandinavian relationship with Celtic.

“It started with Henrik Larsson and from there Celtic have had a lot of followers over here.

“We always look at the Scottish league to see the qualities of the teams there.”

Satisfied with his speech, he put his Wikipedia notes to one side, and leant back in his seat.

So, what do we know about Hareide ?

He’s been around a bit;

Åge Fridtjof Hareide (born 23 September 1953 in Hareid) is a Norwegian football manager and the current manager of Malmö FFin Allsvenskan. In his playing career, he played for Hødd and Molde in Norway as well as Manchester City and Norwich City in England. Hareide was capped 50 times playing for Norway

24 games for Man city, 40 for Norwich between 81 and 84. The rest of his career was in Scandinavia.

As a coach, Hareide has won league titles in all of the Scandinavian countries,[1] In Sweden with Helsingborgs IF in 1999 and withMalmö FF in 2014, in Denmark with Brøndby in 2001–02 and in his native Norway with Rosenborg in 2003. Hareide was in charge of the Norway national team from 2003 to 2008.

As a coach Hareide has won three European countries’ national league championships, namely that of Denmark, Sweden and his native Norway, placing him alongside Trond Sollied and Sven-Göran Eriksson while Ernst Happel and Giovanni Trapattoni have won championships in four different countries.

No mean feat, but it’s only one more than relative rookie Ronny Deila.

He’s no dud, that’s certain, but one wonders why a man with his experience is talking so much, and so much shite at that.

Ronny seemed to have caught the bug. He was asked if Scott Allan would be included in the squad for the tie;

“We will see it is not as if Scott Allan is going to come in here and be the king from the first minute. Nobody is expecting that.

“I don’t think he will go straight in. Nobody has done that, almost.

Wonder how long he paused for before he added “almost ” ?

Berget , the man above, in case you had forgotten him, or deliberately wiped him from memory, also had a few things to say;

 “I felt I deserved another shot at Celtic. I did well in the Champions League qualifier against Maribor away from home and then scored two goals against Dundee United in the league.

“But after that, I got subbed before half-time at Dundee and that was the end for me there.

“The team started to play well and the manager didn’t want to change it.

“Ronny Deila told me that things weren’t going the way he had hoped for me and, to be fair, his changes worked. I
understood. I didn’t agree with him but I had no hard feelings.

“I knew after the Dundee game my time would be up because even before then things weren’t good.

“Then when you get taken off at half-time, as a player, you know you’re not going to play. After that I didn’t get a chance.

“It’s frustrating for me that I didn’t show my best at Celtic because it was a chance for me at a huge club.

“I’ve got a new opportunity here at Malmo and I want to take it.

“It would have been nice for the Celtic fans to remember me for what I did at the club.

“But they probably only remember me as a guy who played a handful of games for them and didn’t do much.

“I expect they see me as just some random guy.

He can relax. Thats not how we see him at all.

No . Not at all.

Perhaps he just arrived with too much baggage…

“So, of course, I’d like to prove to them that I’m a good player. But, more importantly, I have to prove it to myself and the Malmo supporters because that’s where I am now.

“I’d like to show Celtic they were wrong about me and I’ll have a bit of extra motivation for this game because I have a point to prove.

“I have to say, off the pitch, the Celtic fans were great with me. They were supportive of me when I met them and I have no problem with them at all.”

 I’ve told my team-mates here at Malmo all about Celtic. I know all of the players and I’ve also told them about the
atmosphere at Parkhead.

“Virgil has
everything as a defender.

“Stefan has just got better and better too. He has been pushed further up the field and that has really suited him.

“I lived with Stefan for the first six weeks of my time there. His missus cooked me some good dinners but maybe that’s why it didn’t work out for me at Celtic.

“Things were going well when I lived there but it went downhill as soon as I moved out.”

Yes.

That would explain it.

Still, it’s hard to forget the sight of him racing down the wing….

Malmo are on a bit of a roll just now, with three wins in their last three games after a bit of a dodgy start to their season, but we’ll do more on their current form and squad tomorrow.

However,  it’s worth mentioning their support today, who seem like a decent bunch;

Malmö FF are well known for their large local following.[43] The club has several fan clubs, of which the largest is the official fan club MFF Support. It was founded in 1992. MFF Support describes itself as “a non-profit and non-political organization working against violence and racism”.[11] The current chairman of MFF Support is Magnus Ericsson.[44]

There are also several smaller independent supporter groups. The most prominent of these is Supras Malmö, which was founded in 2003 by a coalition of smaller ultras groups and devoted fans.[45] The name “Supras” is derived from the words supporters and ultras – the latter indicating that the group is inspired by a fan culture with roots in the Mediterranean. Supras Malmö is the most visible group in the main supporter stand at Swedbank Stadion, marking its presence with banners, flags and choreography. Another group with similar goals is Rex Scania. MFF Tifosi 96 (MT96) is a network of supporters creating tifos for special occasions and important games.[46] The average attendance for the club’s games in the 2014 season was 14,090, the second best attendance in 2014 Allsvenskan after AIK.[47]

Thats quite a striking picture, and you’d be interested to know that the red and yellow flag is the Scanian flag,

The names Scania and Scandinavia are considered to have the same etymology[18][19][20][21] and the southernmost tip of what is today Sweden was called Skåne by the Romans and thought to be an island. The name is possibly derived from the Germanic root *Skaðin-awjã, which appears in Old Norse as Skáney.[22] According to some scholars, the Germanic stem can be reconstructed as *Skaðan- meaning “danger” or “damage” (English scathing, German Schaden, Swedish skada).[23] Skanör in Skåne, with its longFalsterbo reef, has the same stem (skan) combined with –ör, which means “sandbanks”.

Every days a school day.

You’d also probably be interested to know that the writing on the scarves says ;

” Take that fucking banner down I can’t see a bastarding thing “

They swear a lot in Sweden. The word Sweden is actually derived from the word “swear ” , as the weather, the difficult language and the break up of Abba means they are usually in a bad mood about something.

I blame the schools.

 Elsewhere, tired of linking Celtic players with a move away, the media  have switched tactic.

Now we are bringing some in. Presumably they are hoping that it will unsettle those already at the club.

Surprisingly, Celtic Quick News were amongst the first, citing a move back to Celtic for Jason Denaayer. That could be a crowd pleaser, and there’s no doubting his ability. There would also be the added bonus that he would be playing alongside another Belgian, which is good for both as it could further their international career, but there is one tiny drawback with this plan.

 It would be another loan, and he’s done one spell already. We need to be developing our own players, so perhaps the better option would be the Croat mentioned in the Record, who claim that they “understand ” Celtic ;

last night opened negotiations on a £4million deal for Dinamo Zagreb star Jozo Simunovic.

The Scottish champions have targeted the 21-year-old centre-back with Virgil van Dijk set to leave after the Champions League qualifiers against Malmo.

Sources in Croatia last night told Record Sport that Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell travelled to meet with Dinamo counterpart Zdravko Mamic to personally open talks about a deal.

But with Mamic aware of growing interest from other clubs around Europe in his talented Croatia Under-20 cap, no deal has yet been struck.

Simunovic has previously been scouted by Bayern Munich and Lyon and there is also Bundesliga interest in the defender.

Dinamo representatives remained tight-lipped on the situation last night but it is understood Mamic believes counter offers could start a bidding war which would push up the price for the youngster.

As usual, they couldn’t be arsed fining anything out about the player, so here’s what we dug up. It wasn’t difficult.

He’s shite at hide and seek;

Jozo Šimunović (born 4 August 1994) is a Croatian footballer playing for Dinamo Zagreb.[1]

He started playing football at age of 7 in his village, Gornja Lomnica. At the age of 12 he joined Dinamo Zagreb from Hrvatski Dragovoljac

He made his debut for Dinamo Zagreb against Istra 1961 coming as a 90th minute substitute.[2] Teammate Tin Jedvaj said, It would be my dream to play alongside my great friend Jozo for DZ for the foreseeable future”.[3]

Oh , here we go again. Another player taken away from his dream of playing alongside his best buddy

Or could Gary Hooper really be on his way back?

 Oddly enough,   time really does fly when you’re having fun  , he’s in  the last year of his contract,  it’s up in July 2016 ,  he’s banked a few quid during his spell at Norwich, and as he hasn’t set the heather alight down there, Norwich might be prepared to accept a cheeky wee bid.

Hooper and Griffiths ? Alternating or together ?

 That’s if we can’t get Zlatan, obviously.

Finally, away from football, we hear that the Second Rangers may have won a place on the stock exchange after they secured a new line of credit…

This video appeared on twitter, where someone described it as Scott Allan’s dad being asked by a sky reporter how he felt about his grandchildren being Celtic fans. Of course, it isn’t.

What’s really happening ?

Malmo did exceptionally well in defeating Salzburg over the two games, no mean feat by any standards, but, crucially, Salzburg have been missing their talisman Jonathan Soriano for all their games so far this season and having watched the two games, Malmo were very fortunate to qualify.

I meant to add some stats to the above post.

Over the two legs Malmo had 15 goal attempts, close to evenly shared over both games.
Over the two legs Salzburg had 43 goal attempts, 25 of which were in Sweden.
As I said, Malmo were fortunate, but very resilient.

Excellent diary today am still laughing now regardless of how many players salzborg lost before they played the swedes Malmo won.A good disciplined performance is vital on Wednesday and I am sure we have enough to get a lead to defend because we can be a lethal counter attack side . Looking forward to a full paradise and great game buzzing already hail hail.

This guy Hareide is full of hot air. He is running scared of Celtic and come tomorrow evening we will see that Celtic are far ahead of Malmo. It is many years now since I played against Malmo (1968) when in Royal Navy HMS Hampshire beat them 2-0 the year after Liverpool put them out of the European cup. And of course we know who won it in `67.!!H.H.

Good stuff Ralph! (as usual)

“a couple of salvos” – Is that the plural of saliva? 🙂

I reckon Malmo got lucky against Salzburg – a couple of early goals combined with un-characteristic defensive lapses from Salzburg (are you listening Dedryck!!). I still think Salzburg are/were the better team and – reading between the lines – Hareide probably thinks so too.

Celtic have moved on a bit from last season’s qualifiers and IF we play to our potential and cut-out any silly mistakes – are you listening Dedryck, or Izzy, or Efe!!! – AND keep 11 men on the park for both games – are you listening Broony and Johannsen – I think we’re good enough to get through.
I’m hoping Salzburg have already had their best result & run of luck in Europe for this season (against Salzburg)and that for Celtic the best is yet to come.

Who knows, maybe tomorrow night will be the first step in heralding our return to the CL group stages with a chance of doing more than just making up the numbers? We can but dream! I’m not saying we’ll coast it, but I don’t see us being outplayed by Malmo is the way we were by Legia or Maribor last time round.

Fair play to Mr & Mrs Johannsen for taking Berget in when he first arrived in Glasgow. Surely some intrepid “journalist” could spin this story into some kind of “kinky celtic stars wife share extravaganza” story? They must be too weak expending their energies on the mighty second rangers and Super Mark Warburton, breaker of worlds.

Malmo will be a real test no doubt, and when you hear whats his name reel off the name of some former Celts we are clearly not as strong a team as we once were, but if we go at them with a good tempo and lots of pressing we can get into them and take a goal or two lead away with us.

Think hes got a point about Forrest too- our one player with real pace and he looks to be getting back onto a game, he was a constant danger to Kilmarnock, start him and get the ball to him as much as possible or bring him on around the hour mark as they start to tire and get him going at his full back

I was saying during the Killie match that – no matter what all the usual critics have to say – Forrest’s pace scares opponents. Assuming he’s 100% fit (?), it’s a dead cert he’ll be on at some time tomorrow night.

Have to agree gents, Forrest looked sharp for the first time in a long time. I think Armstrong may get the nod over his pal after his brace at the weekend, so hopefully Forrest / Johansen / Armstrong behind Griffiths tomorrow.
They’ll be tough but I liked how the fans stuck with the team versus Qarabag, hopefully patience in the stands won’t be needed but the majority of smart supporters know not to expect an avalanche of goals these days.

Love the video.

I understand from well placed sources that it’s footage from CCTV outside Peter Lawwell’s front door.
The door-stepping man with the mike is unquestionably the intrepid seeker of truth & justice Keith Jackson.

Well either that or I had too much cheese before bedtime last night ….

If you’ve seen Berget recently, he looks like he has joined the Manson family. Leaving the best club in the world can really take a toll on a man.

We are more of a unit, fitter and better at defending than we were last year – we just need to put away our chances and all will be well.

James Forrest: be selfish, slice through them and if you see the goal, shoot! Let your team mates be there for a rebound or deflection but just pull the trigger man. You’ve done it before.

The Malmo manager is trying to use the press for his wee mind games…the more he talks the more he underlines that he’s worried that we score early and his team collapse under the pressure of the atmosphere that the fans will be generating. We have to go at them from the start, f*ck patience, if we score early and play like we did for 60+ minutes at the weekend we can end this tie in Glasgow. I think that’s what Ronny and the players will be aiming to do, and will be believing that it’s possible. 4-0 Celtic. HH

Another late comment. I started reading the Diary earlier on till I got to the first photo of the donkey and remembered I’d forgotten to pick up the wife at the shops. So, it has been the Pulp Fiction dog house for the rest of the day. But gave her an offer she could not refuse. Fuck off as in I have a sore head. Sop she is away to bed in the huff – no I have not misspelled it.

The Diary was A1+ today whatever that means. The kids down here tell me it means you are a clever bastard. Well, I already knew that but some of the humour today should have qualified you for the Warburton Award – greatest at everything.

I was aware Sweden had a famous furniture manufacturer that made crap furniture that everybody buys, a group that destroyed pop music and annihilated fashion and a film director who made incomprehensible movies but knobheads? Never. What a formidable excretion team him and Warburton would make, one talking pish and the other crap. As Ronny says, tomorrow night will tell. I only hope I do not have to eat my words or I will be sick for a month.

I was a bit worried about the rumour mill for while there but I see the turbulent waters are beginning to turn the wheel of spin once more. I have to say I am not enamoured by any of the suggestions but given Celtic’s propensity for secrecy in these matters, there is probably a deal on the go for some unknown Masai warrior who can jump high enough to actually head a ball at corners. As for Hooper, I could never see in him what others did. But then, my eyes have been getting dimmer by the minute. I would still prefer he remained bogged down in the East Anglian marshlands.

Anyway, I hear a sexy voice calling – my neighbours a lucky bastard. I will have to be content with a walk in the Forrest to see if I can finally find what everyone else seems to see so clearly.

The video, by the way, is big Stubbs introducing himself to Warburton.

Just watched Keech Jacksie and the other two Stooges on the Daily Reeker giving their “unbiased” opinion about our chances tomorrow. It couldnae have been any more negative and downbeat and full of wishful thinking that Celtic do badly. They talked about Boyata’s mistakes, added Efe the bombscare and talked about Malmo getting an away goal…..no word about Celtic’s positive aspects, Griffiths scoring regularly, our defence conceding only 1 goal in the four previous qualifying matches, Boyata also scoring twice in those games, Van Dyke playing well at the back, Johanson and Brown immense in midfield…not a word of encouragement for Scotland’s last team in Europe and only at the end could they bring themselves to call Ronny by name…they cannae hide their desire for us to have a disaster tomorrow. Let’s see them choke on their words tomorrow. I stand by my prediction…Celtic to end the tie tomorrow. HH

Woke up 10 minutes ago had to take the dug out furra shite!
Which given the fact she’s 16 now blind as an SFA Linesman and dripping like a 70’s fridge is no real suprise.
The suprise is she shat on next doors drive and I had to go back out and clean it up!
Ping now wide awake at twelvty past something in the bastid morning.
Havin watched Man United cobble a respectable 3-1 win out of a horendous start last night against real average opposition I could not help but think how decidedly average their defending was against Brugge.
Seriously a half decent side would have taken a few goals off them last night quite easily.
I actually thought christ if we defend that poorly tonight I will be worried!
Which just goes to show how far we have come since the gubbing at the hands of Legia last Season.
Though I would be tempted to ask Boyata to sit this one out tonight and put Mulgrew in their next to Virgil.
This would serve two purposes you see 1 Mulgrew can pass a ball and change play and two he’s the pefect backup for Izzy when he wonders up the park and forgets the way back to defence.
Whilst Mulgrew might not be the quickest he is certainly more switched on to the dangers on the left being a LB himself.
His set piece delivery from deep could also come in handy too when required.
I don’t trust Boyata yet his passing has been suspect up till now and he seems to go to sleep now an then during sustained periods of attack by us.
Mulgrew won’t.
mY starting line up would be as follows:
.
……….GORDON
.
LUSTIG VIRGIL MULGREW IZZY
.
…..BROWN BITTON
.
..FORREST JOHANSEN ARMSTRONG
.
……….CIFTCI

Jury is still out on Griffiths at this level for me he squanders too many chances for me Devoy.
Fine in the SPFL when he’s getting 5,6 even 7 a game but in Europe it can be one or two at most.
Ciftci is more a handful ,can boss defendes noise them up and bring the supporting player into play more with his hold up play.
I also think he’s due a goal.
Tonight could be the night for him.
