Celtic Diary Thursday January 15: Deila: We Are Fit Now

Whilst debate rages, well, maybe not rages, amongst supporters as to the benefit of the mid season break in the Canaries, Ronny Deila has offered his tuppence worth, and it sounds like he’s where he wants to be with the squad.

 “I’m not hard. If you are not fit then you have a problem. But these players in this squad now are fit.

“Pressure is on here from July so to get one week when you can get your head rested a bit, to have some fun and play some good matches, is so positive.

“The things we were talking about six months ago are not there any more.

“The players look much sharper. It’s not just about doing all the wrong things. It’s okay to relax.

“They eat very well, there is no problem with that. What this was about was relaxing their heads. But they also have to be in shape and train and be prepared.

“We had some good training and played the games. It’s about bonding but it’s also about relaxing.

“We have done good work on small injuries, getting them fit again and now we are in better shape than before we left. This whole week has been positive and it’s not just about next week.

“It’s about when we come into May and if you haven’t had one week off you find it very tiring in the end.

“Also, if we had been at home we wouldn’t have been able to train because of the bad weather. It was the perfect week to be away.”

“I’ve only been in Scottish football a few months now so it’s hard for me to say. This is one for the other coaches as well.

“But to have quality football you have to have quality pitches and players who can give 100 per cent on the pitch.

“If they play for too long without a rest the tiredness tells. And the quality will not be the same.”

He’s got a point. Seventy minutes is usually our limit.

 With early indications that the game in Hamilton might be cancelled, despite the artificial pitch, there might be another chance to give them a night out this weekend, but its fair to say we are all looking forward to the game, and hoping that it will go ahead.

 Celtics last competitve game was at Kilmarnock, and it looked like the players enjoyed the astroturf-or whatever the trade name for it is-and the pitch got the credit for the improved performance, but if what ronny says is right, and the players are now at the level he wants, then maybe it was more than just the plush, luxurious surface.

 Although I’d have been hesitant about leting them go out on the beer, especially as there are still a number of court cases hanging over some of the squad. If I’m up in court my wife won’t even let me take the dog out. I guess as long as they avoided any Elvis nights, gypsy fortune tellers and made sure everybody tucked themselves in before they left the toilet, it would have been okay.

 Of course, any group of lads away for a week or so will either bond or batter each other, and hopefully its more a case of the former, as the league race is beginning to get more than interesting, and its unusual, and refreshing, to have a must win game ahead of us, which is exactly what is on the cards at New Douglas Park, which is named in such a way to eliminate any links with anyone who wants to invest in another SPFL club.

 Well, we’ve seen how tight the rules are on dual ownership.

 Celtic have “joined the race ” to sign Dutch under 21 defender Wesley Hoedt, who has been earning rave reviews at AZ 67 Alkmaar. The Dutch team, which incorporated the number 67 in their name as a tribute to the Celtic European cup winning side of that year , ( no, they didn’t-Ed ) have reluctantly concluded that he won’t be staying, and the hoops, along with Lazio, who had a £1m bid rejected this week, are keen to acquire his signature.

 He looks the part, and plays in a sort of controlled aggressive style, unless he spots you taking a photo of him.

Wesley Hoedt

 We hear that Gary Mackay Steven has signed a pre contract for next season, but talks are under way to bring him in now, with a fee of around £250,000 mentioned. Whether or not this means Celtic didn’t get, or are no longer  trying to get Ikeche Anya, is unclear, but its probably fair to say that deal won’t happen. If it did, no doubt the papers would complain about there being too many left footers at the club, at a time when we stress that we are open to all.

Any hope of any further movement into the club was diminishing rapidly, as John Collins added to the managers claim that he wants to keep who he has got as a priority, when he was asked about the prospect of playing a possible fourteen games in forty nine days;

 “But we’re used to playing two games a week. We’ve done that for the majority of the season.

“We’ve got a big squad. A healthy squad. The injured boys are all coming back. So it’s not something we can’t cope with. We just have to deal with it.”

 Apart from the obviously structured and leading question, the underlying theme seems to be we could be stuck with what we’ve got, which is fine as long as the other team doesn;t get the ball in the Celtic half.

 Virgil van Dijk may have admitted he’s happy where he is, but you get the feeling his fingers were crossed when he said it. From his contentment at staying in the summer he’s moved to a noticeably less partisan attitude;

“I have recently been thinking a bit about it [his career]. I am now 23 and have played at Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic and am now linked to clubs like Arsenal. Isn’t that great?

“There are a lot of clubs interested, but Celtic is holding on to a big transfer fee. The club is clear: they don’t want to let me go in the winter, because we’re playing for four trophies.

 “I understand the attitude of the club and see it as a compliment that they do not want to let me go. But we must be realistic. If a nice club from England comes, we must sit down. I would also develop as a player.”

To save time, I’ll put in his quotes for the rest of the week.

” ———– are a fantastic club in a fantastic league and its where I want to be, but if Celtic want me to stay then I will”

I’ve no problems at Celtic, but the wife hates Glasgow. Somebody upset her in the town the other day ”

The offer from ———— was too good to turn down, and it was decided it was best for everyone if I moved on ”

Simply, if he doesn’t want to be here, cash in. Its not fair to keep someone out of the team who wants to be at Celtic whilst fielding  someone who clearly has one eye on the door. And the street.

 The Diary often criticises newspapers which are a little economical with the truth concerning the events surrounding the clubs which have played out of Ibrox, so its only fair to offer praise for the courage it may have taken for the Metro to publish this letter.

Embedded image permalink

Which caused consternation at the Evening Times, where their Ibrox  correspondent , having missed the story, tried to play it down;

Glad SRY of Hamilton got that off his chest then. He must feel so much better.

 Lets be honest, someone had to tell people. Lindsay and his cronies have consistently left the important bits out when it comes to the Ibrox scandal.

 Perhaps he is spending his time talking with the papers finacial news team, and maybe looking into why David Murrays companies are going down like flies, owing almost half a billion pounds to creditors.

A number of companies run by former Rangers owner Sir David Murray are being wound up.

The metals and property entrepreneur has petitioned the Court of Session to appoint Deloitte as liquidators for Murray Group Holdings.

The action is also being taken for subsidiaries Murray Group Management, Premier Property Group and Murray Outsourcing.

Notice was given on 5 January but only published on Tuesday 13 January.

The documents state that a meeting was held in Edinburgh at which Sir David Murray conceded that company liabilities have forced the action.

His business empire has run into conflict with its pensioners over a lack of funds to fulfil their expected pensions. It has been reported that there is a £22m shortfall in the pension fund, and pensioners will have to take reduced pay-outs as a result.

Liquidation follows moves, under pressure from the Bank of Scotland, to sell off various assets which Sir David Murray had owned.

Incredibly, despite his disastrous record in business, the MSM ( The Scotsman, in this instance) want to know his opinion on how best to run Second Rangers, just a couple of years after he destroyed the first one;

 “The way I see it at the minute, and this isn’t trying to be smart, is people have changed seats at the table.

But the fact is the club needs money and resources as quickly as possible. Dave Kind and the Three Bears, I’m sure, have the right intentions for the club, but they must be in a dilemma about how they take it to the next stage when the other sides don’t seem to be willing partners.”

Sir David added that efforts by suitors to gain control, while admirable, would need “more money”. He also criticised the apparent lack of strategy from both the board and those bidding to gain control of the club.

“I don’t know what anyone is trying to do at the minute,” Sir David said. “What we’d like to see is Rangers in the hands of Rangers-minded people. But I wish someone would come out and tell us what their strategy is.”

 “Would need more money “

Fancy Dave coming up with that solution.

Perhaps he could ask his pals at the Bank of Scotland to help out.

Oh, wait, they bit the dust as well.

 Anyone spot the link yet ?

 But there is good news for the beleagured Ibrox club. And hope on the horizon both on the field and off it.

Fraser Aird, the latest product of the lucrative and impressive Auchenhowie academy, following in the footsteps of John Fleck, Jamie Ness and Lewis MacLeod reckons that the Cup game need not worry the Ibrox hordes;

“I think the boys are confident. It is a one-off game and anything can happen

 And off the field, big hearted Lynsey Sharp, commonwealth games star, presumably she didn’t win anything judging by that description, has urged the support to join the Rangers Supporters Trust, as she has done;

“Rangers is in my blood and it’s heart-breaking to see the most successful club in the world like this. The fans have so much passion and we need to use that passion to bring the club back to its best.”

Oh dear, they are not the most successful club in the world, and neither was the predecessor. The fans passion was there for all to see, and still is, while their club was killed off and the carcass ripped apart for anything useful.

And you can’t bring it back. Its dead. but if you do manage it, show me how. I still miss my old grandad, and if you have a reliable method for resurrection , I’ll give it a shot.

 Her backing was welcomed by the equally blinkered Gordon dinnie, of the RST, who added;

“Every fan can help to make sure the problems that have plagued our club are never allowed to happen again.”

 I think we can safely say they won’t.

This wasn’t a documentary.

bond 2

 The man pictured yesterday was Michael Gray, and we could add an interesting or amusing anecdote here about his time at /celtic , if there were any, that is.

Heres another from times gone by, perhaps one who doesn’t get the praise and credit he deserved. Who is he ?

Paul Elliot.
A wonderful player. Someone that was vastly underrated.

Big Paul Elliott, one of the best centre halves we have had at CP, didn’t get credit? Aye only from the SMSM, so what else is new?

The one and only Paul Elliot. Now highly involved with the ‘Kick It Out’ anti racism campaign. An excellent player in an awful team in the early 90s. I remember him coughing up blood and refusing to be substituted off after blocking a pile driver with his stomach against TFOD. Sadly they don’t make them like him any more.

I agree Ralph,VVD should be sold.However,he is our only true CB,so we need him for the battle to win this league.
Why has it took Deila this long,to get them fit?
No more excuses.Give Commons his 2 years.Sign GMS now.Give Guidetti a strike partner.No more forcing of square pegs into round holes.Deila judgement day has arrived.He has talked the talk,now he must walk the walk!

Perhaps Ronnies idea of fit is not the previous managers levels or indeed the players own idea of fit.

I wonder if Peter winces every time Ronnie moans about having to train in the cold outside….that was real forward planning…not!

Ronnie’s idea of a left winger,is to put Stokes their.Get GMS now.Yet another dig at Lenny.At least Lenny’s team had a decent shape about it,

No digs at Lenny. Just if someone comes in and says “I want you fit” and players think “We are fit” it doesnt mean their talking same level.Ronnie may want Norsk Triathlete fit compared to Lennys Scottish Fitbaw fit, neither necessarily better than the other but vastly different.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30827483

Rangers have lodged advance loan notices of security against Ibrox and Murray Park on behalf of Sports Direct.

The papers, lodged with the Register of Scotland on 15 January, mean that only Sports Direct can be granted security on the properties for a 35-day period.

END GAME!!!!

This would give Ashley complete control over Newco because there is no reasonable method of repaying the loan, even if they take next years season book sales into account. A new share issue to take Newco forward and pay off the loan is an unlikely solution if you take into account the recent attempt having to be being bailed out by the Easdales. This may well be Ashley’s end game. Owning Ibrokes and Murray Park is tantamount to owning Newco as it appears to be their only assets. Okay possibly the sale of Wallace would raise 1-2 million but the others players would struggle to be worth 1-2 million combined.
This may play out as Ashley getting newco for £10m.
For this to happen I am making the assumption that Ibrokes and MP are available as collateral against the debt

The leaning tower of Piza, what a player, can remember him scoring a header against oldco from practically on his knees. Was that in a cup final, cant remember. I think GMS would be a good addition to the squad, more effective than Stokes.

Here we are 2 weeks into the transfer window and still no one signed, typical Celtic.
Dundee Utd have quoted their price for GMS, so why isn’t a faxed offer been sent to Tannadice and the player at Lennoxtown doing a medical? Or Ross Hall hospital doing his medical.
Paper talk is all you get with Celtic, where is the big thinking and ambition?
It’s my belief that Celtic don’t need wholesale changes in January but we do need to strengthen in a few positions, also I’d be telling VVD if he makes any more come and get me statements he’ll be getting fined.
Just fucking tell him, your staying until the summer so shut the fuck up.
I’m actually getting to the point where I’ll be glad when he does go, if you don’t want to be here, fuck off!
It’s time for Celtic to act like a big club, identify your targets and pay for them.
If Utd want £3m for Armstrong offer them £3m
Get your business done early Lawwell and the team will benefit!

Great diary today Ralph!
Just on the “who sanctions signings” chat we’ve had on here (more so) recently, if I was a player and a club wanted me I would NEED to speak to the new manager. Where do I fit in, what do you expect from me, what are the team abitions etc etc. So all these players we’ve been p!ssing money up against the wall on must have spoken with Strachan or Lennon. Whether Park identified them or not, the manager must surely be willing to take the player on and have a role for them in mind or else the above conversation does not or cannot happen. In person or by phone I don’t care but there must be a conversation before he signs on the dotted line, am I wrong in thinking this to be the case?
So scouting must improve but I for one do not think Park/Lawwell are solely to blame for the dead wood in the squad.

at 2.5M,is not worth it.He is also on record,as saying,he met Deila AFTER he had signed.I hope this answers your question ‘re transfers.

Someone from Celtic should take Virgil into a quiet room and swiftly insert a size ten in his Ronson and explain what’s expected of someone when they are pulled from relative obscurity, at a cost of over two and a half million pound, and they sign a contract to that club and in return are treated like a prince by everyone at the club from the boardroom to the support.
If he leaves Celtic this window, we’re well shot imo Virgil has fallen
Into that old trap of believing the hype of the Celtic support.
I think when he leaves us he’s in for a shock.

For him to be coming out with this pony in the middle of a transfer window is shocking.

He’s a fckn ingrate b@$trad.

If iit didn’t feck us up team and cash wise, I would buy the young lad Hoedt from AZ, stick him in and bounce the fecker between the bench, the 1st team and the youths for the rest of the season.

I have never had time for players who have doubts about playing for the club and this includes Kenny Dalglish at the time of the Liverpool interest. If you wish to move on, do so. No humming and haaing. Leave space for a player who wants to play for Celtic and, if you can make us some decent money into the bargain, then get on your bike. This is the problem when you bring in players from abroad who do not understand the ethos. The jersey has always been bigger than the man.

The arrogance is ripping out the boy, both on and off the pitch PB, he’s strolling around the pitch like he owns it and talking to everybody and anybody that cares to listen to him talk about himself.
He’s got a big tip for himself that’s for sure.

Reading between the lines, he patently believes he’s to good for Celtic and he has to move on now ‘to grow’.

To cool for school.

I hear what you’re saying, HS, but in this case I think It’s down to the player. After the seasons end I would wish the big chap the best of luck on his ‘journey’ lol, thank him for his services and be thankfull for the heafty cheque sitting in the vintage 1994 biscuit tin.
He’s being payed well enough, being trained well enough, being treated well enough, and although we may not be there long, he’s still playing Euro football and he can’t give us the less than six months that we need?
It’s in the boys character m8, massive ego.

He’s a silly wee boy and I seriously hope he catches on to himself before he gets to far ahead of himself.

I don’t know what kind of milk your wife is buying for your Weetabix these days but the combination is doing wonders for your regularity. The Diary, or the Dairy if we are talking milk, just gets better and better even with repetitive topics in the quiet season.
“Simply, if he doesn’t want to be here, cash in. Its not fair to keep someone out of the team who wants to be at Celtic whilst fielding someone who clearly has one eye on the door. And the street.” Real sports journalism based on fact.

” He looks the part, and plays in a sort of controlled aggressive style, unless he spots you taking a photo of him.” Ralph humour at its best. Or am I just easily pleased. The wife seems to think so. Then, I guess at my age ……

Regarding fitness, I have a dilemma. See, I have been watching football and at one time had a go at playing (primary 3 and not beyond. But I can claim to have played against Jinky. Or would I have been better not mentioning that given the 9-0 thrashing by St. Columba’s) since players left their work at 12 and went to play games at 3 and all that on a training schedule devised mainly by themselves and consisting of running up and down terraces or round tracks. Then full time came in and with that a new concept of training 3 days a weeks in the morning was established. If it ran over to the afternoon there was a lot of explaining to do to the wife why you didn’t pick the kids up from school. If you were among the lucky ones managed by the likes of Big Jock you even got to kick a ball as well as running. Others under a certain other Big Jock (of the Wallace clan) prepared players for battle with sergeant major discipline and army assault-course fitness. This was followed by a period of technical niceties like diets, specialist training and, of course, the most delicate of medical care such as mobile stretchers, doctors at the ready, St. John’s expertise when carried off by the very antitheses of fitness. No, the days of a cold sponge and a carry code to the side line were over, replaced by magic sprays, rub a dub dubs and half an hours attention on the side line or maybe even in the dressing room before returning to the game. No more the bandaged bloodiness of an English Butcher’s face . Now it is the mummification of a wee Jamie. I guess maybe the game has changed somewhat but I get the impression it has lagged way behind the progress of fitness regimes when it comes to the mollycoddling of modern times. I suppose the days when men were men dictated the style of battlefield football that I was introduced to when a tackle was a tackle and not an “Oh mammy daddy” every time an opposition player looks at you the wrong way. Maybe the game has progressed technically and now dictates the style we are accustomed to and accept today. What I am really asking is for all its fitness regimes and subsequent so called faster football, has it progressed as an entertainment? Were the numbers who attended week in and week out in the “old days” due to the lack of an alternative or is today’s problem that the game simply does not entertain any more? If it does not, is that due to the modern style, the decreasing interest, the other sporting options available, T.V. or is there too much emphasis on “taking care” of players both financially and physically? Do we really need the diets and the specialist training? Or should we turn a little way back to the grit of yesteryear and concentrate on how to win by hook, crook or bloody nose? You see, I think Ronnie has a dilemma too. How does he amalgamate both the old and the new and still win games? For all his fitness claims, I get the feeling the reality might be he has not got to the root of the problem.

I await your outburst now, Monti’s though I would have thought you would have nothing left after your rants so far J.

Two points before I finish, as I said yesterday but too late on thank God for anyone to notice, I have expressed my anger at the pretence, including that of Celtic, that the League Cup semi is another meeting of two clubs. I strongly objected to Celtic advertising the game as such and thus helping to promote the myth so wished for by the SFA and the media. Shame on you Celtic.

And definitely finally. Paul Elliot, as many have said, was indeed one of our finest centre halves and one that was not properly recognised. I wished he would have stayed longer at the club but que sera sera. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Glasgow restaurant one afternoon (obviously before the diet regime) and found him a very intelligent and courteous guy. Most outstanding quality was his lack of airs or graces. I wish him well with his current work in race relations.

Paul Elliot ….Great player but as big a fantasist as even Gordon Ramsay.

Once claimed on a ‘Kick out Racism’ interview that he got mercilessly abused by the Klan at Snake Mountain one day when he put Celtic into the lead, then ironically cheered when he equalised for them with an own goal.

I witnessed all of big Paul’s ‘Old Firm’ matches back then and must have been on drugs that day he claimed to score at both ends at Ibrox……on drugs…..hmmmm…..wait a minute…….maybe he did?
