Celtic Diary Thursday August 7: Life In The Slow Lane. Again.

About six months ago, Peter Lawwell asked a question. He wanted to know why, with the club in the best financial position its ever been in, with league titles in the bag and champions league football, the fans weren’t happy.

If he hung around long enough to watch the shambles at Murrayfield last night, he would have got the answer. With a few expletives thrown in for good measure.

Celtic were beaten-well and truly beaten-2-0 by a Legia Warsaw side currently tenth in the Polish league. A side who have only won one home game this season. Against us, by the way.

For all the talk pre match of heart and passion, Celtic looked disinterested, lacking organisation , composure and any threat of winning the game whatsoever.

How did that happen ?

Well, lets go back to the end of last season, when Neil Lennon wanted to buy Robert Snodgrass, who he felt would improve the team, adding some much needed creativity to the middle of the park. Apparently, he was told he wasn’t getting the money for him, and the resulting stand off led to him resigning, which was gratefully accepted by the board.

In comes Ronny Deila, a man with a vision which is nice, but lacking in experience and man management skills. With the players either unable, or unwilling to adopt his style, the crash against Legia becomes inevitable.

Thats only part of it, though. The real reason for last night is simply downsizing. The refusal to replace players of quality with similar players. This hope that we’ll always turn up a gem from somewhere. But the problem with these “gems “, even when we find them, is that their heads are turned south at the first possible opportunity, and while the bank balance is inflated, the team needs to be ย constantly ย re built.

And thats no way to run a railroad.

Celtic supporters are loyal. Whatever else we can be accused of, we usually turn up in great numbers, buy the merchandise, and support the team. But when they are taken for granted, they kick back. And the time to kick back is here.

With no Champions League football this season, a major selling point for the club when buying players, the reverse will happen. Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk, possibly a few others won’t be here come September 1st. Deila needs investment if he’s to achieve anything this season. And that includes domestic success. If he knows of any players who can play his system, he needs to be ringing them this morning, otherwise he’ll be back in Norway in time for the Midnight sun. Although he probably feels like he already is.

A number of players have reached the end of the road with the club, judging by the last two games. But the question remains, is it their fault ?

Deila has come in with his ideas, and with John Collins, a reputedly piss poor man manager, they have combined to alienate the lads who won the league at a canter last year. They don’t look happy, in fact they all-perhaps Adam Matthews and Calum MacGregor excepted, looked as though they would rather be anywhere else than Edinburgh last night.

Why do we have to rebuild every four years ? Why can’t we have a smooth transition from one manager to the next ?

Why does the club care more about the balance sheet than the team on the park ?

Plenty of questions, not many answers. But its apparent that the club, from being in a position to dominate Scottish football for a number of years, have made a complete and utter balls of it.

Again.

Someone has to be held to account. Lawwell is the man in charge, and if he wants to salvage any credibility from this episode, then he needs to invest in Deila, his choice of manager, and prove to the supporters that he does have the clubs best interest at heart. He needs to show that what has happened so far this season is unacceptable, and he needs to show he is doing something to rectify matters.

Because what we have seen so far is nothing short of embarrassing, and although he might not be, we are proud of our club.

And we don’t like anyone taking the piss out of it.

I could go on for hours in this vein, but moaning is not going to change anything. Starting from this morning, Lawwell and his puppets need to get around the table, and start putting our club back where it should be.

Anything less, and he can put himself on the transfer list.

Football without fans is nothing. Lawwell might soon be able to see that for himself.

The reason that Lawell has got away with it for so long ,is that he knows the support was still there in decent enough amounts, whatever was on show. This season may sadly prove otherwise, our best players heading down the road and in terms of disenchantment as high a level as I have felt/seen in a long time.
It seems ages ago that the thunder was being brought back to celtic park,.

‘ Balancing the books to pay the suits’ that’s LAWELL and the rest of this current boards first and only concern, the football squad are just a vehicle to pay them and make them money, the straw that broke the camels back arrived last night, the only way change will happen is when the fans force it, i see a revolution on the scale of 1994 on the horizon unless the board have actually realized after last night that only money can rebuild CELTIC, NAW just talk..HAIL HAIL, KTF

Well done Neil Lennon!

How you managed to get this shower of posers, shylocks and useless jessies to win anything was nothing short of a miracle.

Good luck wherever you end up. You will always be a top celt in my eyes.

it was lennon who left us with this shite team, the warning signs were there last season, the cup games and the general standard of player, it was shite to watch. i feel sorry for delia, if he doesnt get the money and time to get rid of the crap we have built up he will be the fall guy. we have a team full of players who are incapable of the basics of touch, passing, movement. dont even get me started on the forwards!!

On the same day Sevco cant raise a farthing, we cant raise ourselves for a game. Shameful stuff but as you say, its the Circle of Strife that is modern Celtic PLC.

if the clubs needs to downsize, tell us why and help us understand..we’re accepting people, we will do all we can to help. Just dont tell us yur giving us 100 quid discounts selling us areduced pish product and try to make us feel we’re to blame.

Im behind Ronnie, hes the guy who was told the plan and stood up to try and make it work. He now needs backing fromthe board and fans. I reckon all the defence will be long gone bar Lustig come Sept 1st. Forrest will have offers and Commons maye soon find that Championship seems a nice place depsite previous comments. Would anyone else be missed in all honesty on current standing?.

Craig Gordon, Broony, young McGregor.

The futures bright eh….even The Europa looks dodgy now!

John Paul does well enough in that role, imho, but I dont think it takes an employee to convey what the fans are feeling to a negligent board.

I just hope this anger doesnt manifest itself at Flag day when Fergus turns up ( which is sadly a tactic a nervous Board will now hope helps ease the anger directed towards them)

Perfect summary. Trouble is, look at all the foreign players we’ve paid money for and who weren’t good enough. Lassad, Balde, Rogic,Bangura,Icelander A, Icelander B, etc, etc. It would be better to just keep the money. Also, can’t we make players honour their contracts and not fuck off to the highest bidder?

I recommend buying locally: May, Johnny Russell, and others. They might stay longer and learn how to play in Europe as a team and be more than happy with a monthly wage that would be more than anyone they grew up with could dream of. It’s called gratitude. There is no future in buying Hoopers, Wanyamas, Van Dijks, etc. if we just have to sell them when they get bored.

Henrik Larsson spoiled us all but the loyalty of the man was exceptional. Even then he was paid five or six times what we can afford now.
One theory of man management is treat your players with decency and respect, then just let them play to their strengths. Football is a pretty simple game really. Who said they “muddy the water to make it look deep…”
In fact, sell all the prima donnas and pay the grafters a bit more. The core of our team should stay:
Brown, Mulgrew, Matthews, Lustig, Izzy, Griffiths, Commons (for god sake pay the man what he asks for!!!) Bring on some youth and buy some young SPL talent. What Lawwell and others really need to do is let a manager build a team and keep it and youth is the only answer to that. Once upon a time Scottish players could handle Continental teams. I think they can learn to do that again.Calm down everybody. Put the money back in your pockets. Let’s see what happens. By the way, vote YES to insure governments we don’t vote for don’t tax wheelchairs and those with learning disabilities. Celtic Football Club could also do one helluva lot more with their surplus millions to aid Glasgow’s and Scoland’s poor.

Excellent piece,Ralph.
Spoken like a true fan and from the heart.
Yes,we have pressed the SELF-DESTRUCT button.Sorry, not us the fans, who are Celtic, but our NEGLIGENT board.
LENNY LEAVING THE CLUB HE LOVES,should be seen as a watershed moment in time.
The Tinkerman doesn’t panic buy, says the smug Collins. So,what the fck was Berget(who) ?
I don’t know if the Tinkerman can be trusted with spending wisely ?
Anyway,it’s Lawwell’s bum chum Park who calls the shots in transfers. In his 7 years,he has been RESPONSIBLE for blowing
fortunes, especially strikers, but lives off the Wanyama signing.
So,for Snodgrass, we get….Berget !
For Finnbogason,we get….Balde,Pukki and Boerrigter !
Yes,the time for ACTION is now,Ralph. But,from us the fans.
Let’s all meet in the ‘ Celtic Way ‘ and show our DISPLEASURE,at the CONTEMPT this board have for US,the Celtic faithful ( WE ARE CELTIC ) not the board !!

First rule of business ” speculate to accumulate”. So is it too much to ask board to invest ..say 50% of expected income from CL ? Or does board meet every so often just to read bank balance? Board have a duty to look after shareholders interest ..so? Fans who attend games getting raw deal….first 2 home games kick offs changed to suit TV. What is difference between TV money and say 5000 more season books sales? Just had a look at fixtures list. If we qualify for Europa League. 5 out 6 dates , we have games at home scheduled for Saturdays. Wonder what will happen ? Answers to Peter Lawwell

Why did a 21 year old who was turfed out on loan last season look like the only player who gave a โ€Žfuck? Is it because heโ€™s been at the club since he was 7 and knows what it means to wear the jersey?! โ€ŽI can handle defeat, it happens more often than not in Europe but the manner in which we exited โ€Žmakes me angry. Soulless and monotonous lacking any passion or pride. Embarrassing! At least aginst โ€ŽArtmedia we came out fighting, this time round we curled up and took it up the arse. โ€Ž

The team were a total and absolute shambles last night. McGregor (it seemed to me) was the only one interested in trying to break them down. There was no fight, no passion and no heart shown by anyone else.

These players are (with the exception of Berget – who didnt play last night) the team that Lenny left at the end of the season. The team he left would never have lain down to a team of such mediocrity. So this begs the question, is it the new management style, is it the tactics that he is giving to the players? In the absence of any other plausible explanation the answer has to be yes.

It seems that Forster and Van Dyke will be on their way. Good luck to them, both have served the club well. However, as previous comments have said, why do we need to sell them in the first place?

I could go on forever here, but the long and short of it is that the team is not good enough. Nowhere near it. If we don’t invest now on the park there wont be a business off it.

When are people going to see that Lawwell is simply an employee , doing the biding of his employer, namely Dermot Desmond.
All questions have to be directed at the “organ grinder”, not the “monkey”.
Was he even at the game last night? If not , why not?
How many games a season does he attend?
What is his vision ,his plan , for Celtic Football Club?
Does he even have one?
My feeling is that we are just a “small fry” in his business portfolio. A ” talking point” at the dinner table with his fellow Irish businessmen.
This massive football club, (because it is massive with huge potential) needs a leader, a chief, with a genuine plan, leading from the front.
Lawwell’s not our leader! Desmond doesn’t want to be.
If this “downsizing” is a genuine plan, then let them explain the reasons and goals.
Otherwise it just looks like they thought they could continually get to the lucrative group stages every year on the cheap. That’s not a plan. Not a business model.
That’s just lazy , sloppy business.
So come on Desmond , jump on the next flight from Barbados and let us in on your thought process.

Yesterday in one word: abject.

In business there are two ways to be profitable: 1) Increase revenue, or 2) decrease cost. Talented businessmen are able to do the former, which is more difficult, while hacks resort to the latter, which is vastly easier. (And why many jobs have fled to backwaters like Bangladesh … and Southhampton.)

All you fuds that wanted rid of Lennon, you got your wish, you must be the only happy fans this morning. THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED.

Aberdeen, Motherwell, etc must be rubbing their hands together, the league is no longer a one horse race, even fake rangers fans think they get a result against us in the league cup.

Deila said the players aren’t CL level, the players were at CL last season, some were at the WC, the only change is the manager.

Never have I been so pessimistic about an upcoming season or seen a Celtic team so bad. The only result we’ve got was against a part-time team whose star player wasn’t good enough for our youth team.

We’re still in the UEFA Cup and if we’re drawn against Spurs or Inter I dread what will happen.

Bleh, Lennon was a huge part of the blame for all this. He was a puppet too remember. Anyone who buys he left because he suddenly grew balls and wanted money for investment after 4 yrs is kidding themselves. It was his side and he has filled it with second rate garbage players. Him being gone is one step in the right direction, now we need rid of Liewell and as many have pointed out Dickmond. It frustrates me how many fans continue to line his pockets as if we acted together he would’ve been gone many moons ago. Right around the time he let the worst huns side in history win the league when they were on the verge of bankruptcy would’ve been that time. Yet here we are. No doubt the board will come out with the same Tory lies and people will believe it once again and continue to fund em and so many more embarrassments to come. As fans, it’s crossed the point were we can blame the board, now I can safely say we only have ourselves to blame for putting up with this for so long. Desmond no doubt will care not a jot about our opinions as he has made clear many times before. Please stop lining his pockets. The time for action is now. SACK THE BOARD

There is a good chance we will draw the zombies on a cup this season. Last season I would have welcomed it as despite our flaws (in reaching the highest CL standards) it may have been double figures. What I’ve seen so far is that I’m not confident of winning ANY game right now, and add to that the pressure, hype, bile, on a scale unknown, that ramps the fear factor up for us even more.

Make no mistake – this is a shambles, and I don’t think it’s even got rock bottom yet. I don’t even blame the players (fully) as the formation shape and tactics have been the main factor. I don’t even blame Delia, what was he supposed to turn the job offer down? He’s not up to it. It’s clear even from this early on. There root of this isn’t even Lawwell – as has been pointed out, he carries out the strategy of the BOARD. Them with their current strategy, and their desire to make money for their shareholders to keep the price up and inflate the value of ‘their asset’, is where the root of the problem is.

The time may be right for revolution.

Hail hail!

We have struggled since the MON years, every manager since has been told to cut their spending.Last year we were extremely lucky against a poor Karagandy team, this year we were totally disjointed against Legia. The body language of the majority of the players was total disinterest. Lenny left he was not the greatest manager but he did his best under the restriction. I was at Murrayfield last night with my Grandson, we stayed till the end for him, I would have walked after the first goal. We should continue to support the team but not purchase any merchandise, hopefully this will send a message that Celric fans are not mugs. Excellent article keep up the good work.

We are in great danger of being that jakey propped up against a wall with a bottle in a brown bag that says โ€œI used to be a contenderโ€.
I thought we played really bad last night culminating in a couple of things that thought I would never see again, the aimless punt up the field and the 10 yard hoof from defence straight to an opposition player. Combine that with the pass happy play, passing it sideways until you eventually pass it straight to an opposition player or making a great run into the box but not lifting your head up to see a player to pass to.
I donโ€™t believe that the players didnโ€™t give their all, I just believe that they are not good enough. They seemed to lack the basics even, passing behind a running player instead of ahead, and wasting the set plays that they had.
The problem definitely can be blamed on the board for their reactive rather than proactive style of governance. They seem to be doing everything in their power to bring us down to Sevcos level just in time for their referee assisted promotion next season. Every player and manager they get for less money makes thing worse. A lot of people are saying we need to sell Forster and Van Dyke etc to make up for lost Champions League money. Do we not have zero debt? Can we not survive without this money?
I think it is time that we told Lawwell in no uncertain terms what we think of his leadership with a march or rally. And to all the naysayers that said โ€œYou cant spend money or we will end up like Rangersโ€, well is what you wanted. A Celtic team that gets trounce by a team 10th in the Polish League?

Lawwell’s not our leader.
Desmond calls the shots but he’s not interested in leading.
And there-in lies the BIG problem.
Also it was Desmond who told the sevco fans that they were still the same club, with the same unbroken history.
Perhaps that shows just how out of touch he is with our support.

Stromgodset to celtic is some career move ,deila has had 6 weeks to adapt and improvise with what he inherited was disgusting judgement fromPL. Could Neil Lennon not have been asked to assist a smooth transition to assess his squad ,hindsight is a wonderful thing but when we went down to ten last week , a samaras to bring on and do the running upfront would have given some respite , however forget the Europa league and concentrate on the league and for heavens sake realise the mistakes and bring 3 experienced players in to nurture the youth coming through .

Holy sea about Lenny having the balls to stand up to the board ? I would question that Lenny came out and said it was coming after last weeks display never said anything before it, why didn’t he say that when he left and let the fans know what was happening ( before we splashed out on season books ) and how much money did he waste on players 10-20-30 million including wages and pay offs.
I think the board need a wake up call from fans and it’s dermot that needs told if we can find him not lawwell maybe for a start not buying the half time draw which has went up in price but the prize money went down ( like the lotto) or something else?.

Ralph,

I agree whole heartily with your point of view as a supporter. Our club is downsizing but in the cold light of day why should Celtic spend money on decent players (even if they could)? The fact of the matter is at least 88% of the games Celtic will play this season will be of shite viewing quality and of little interest (that’s if we make the Europa league). The league is shite. Lawwell should contact Albion Rovers with a view to sharing their ground for the future fixtures. It will easily accommodate the numbers who are still foolish enough to waste their time and money on a club that totally ignores and disrespects them. The board will then be free to divide up Celtic Park into allotments where they can vegetate along with anything else they might manage to grow.
“Speculate to accumulate” has always been the motto of successful businesses.Celtic ‘s motto, “stagnate to vegetate” will reap the rewards it deserves.

If we do get back in, the perfect matches to boycott to send a massive FUCK OFF msg to Liewell and Dickmond. I personally hope Uefa tell us to f*ck off.

how can anyone critise neil lennon & call him a coward? A man that stands strong in the face of bullets, bombs attack sin the street and on the touchline. You call Neil Lennon a coward then u are no Celtic fan.

aye ok saj cause that’s what was said. On another note i see the Legia player played 2 mins as a sub so I hope Uefa realise it was a genuine mistake and the guy gave them no advantage, maybe give them a small fine and let them go to the next round as they deserved it. We deserved exactly what we got, we don’t deserve to be bailed out after what could’ve been 12-1 on aggregate never mind 6-1.

Celtic was formed on the ethos of charity & Legia Warsaw are the latest beneficiaries.
