Celtic Diary Wednesday August 6: D Day For Deila

So, we thought it would be a dull season. Well, we’ve got all the excitement we need tonight as Celtic look to advance in the Champions League , despite being 4-1 down to Legia Warsaw after a disastrous showing in Poland last week.

The stage is set for a glorious night, and the season hasn’t even started yet. Whilst we always see ourselves as the good guys, the Poles don’t seem to need much help in taking on the role of the guy in the black hat.

Celtic were easier than St Patrick’s Athletic,

claims cocky Legia Warsaw midfielder Ondrej Duda

And the midfield dynamo has confessed that discussions have taken place among the squad about possible opponents in the next round.

Duda said: “St Patrick’s were a lot tougher for us than Celtic. People had counted we would have a big victory against St Patrick’s at home and it did not go that way.

“Fortunately, we were composed for the return match and now we are on the right track. We have not qualified yet but I know everyone is looking at potential opponents. There have been these discussions.

“Personally, I would like BATE Borisov. It seems to me we would have a really good chance against them.”

Duda, however, has insisted he is not being disrespectful to Celtic.

He said: “Celtic are a great club with amazing support from the fans. Of course our advantage is big and we can play quietly, so I am hopeful.

“Considering the opponent, the whole team played so well.”

Well, thats taken care of Ronny Deilas pre match team talk for him.

Scott Brown has already said that the players are sore from the celebrating that took place among the Legia side last week, and points out that his team mates can’t wait to get stuck in.

Henning Berg, the Legia manager, from his time with the now defunct Rangers, knows exactly what his charges will face at Murrayfield, and moved to play down the triumphalism his men displayed in Warsaw;

“We were just happy to win the game and play well, also with scoring two late goals. It was a big win for us and it was the players’ joy.

“They know we have another game to go and nothing is settled yet. We’ll have to work hard to go through.

“We were good at home and maybe Celtic were not at their best, so we know we’ll have to perform well. I’m sure Celtic will be better than last week.

“We expect them to come out looking for goals but these are games we want to do well in if we want to play at Champions League level.”

It will need a superhuman effort from the hoops tonight, and everyone will have to pull his weight. Deila hasn’t given up, but is aware of the work required to progress;

“We have everything to win,”

“I haven’t given up. It’s possible.

“If we turn this around it will be a massive night and maybe the best night of my life.

“That is what we are wanting, dreaming of but behind that it needs a good performance.

“Thursday was a hard day but I have had many days like that in my career.

“That gets you reflecting and you have to use your experience to turn it around and bounce back.

“I can’t go off and think of disaster, I have to think of what we are going to do and how we will improve.

“The boys have been working well this week, we have been talking a lot and now we are looking forward to the game.”

Thats the key. Communication. When it comes down to it, he’s the boss, but management is about listening as well as talking. God gave us two ears and one mouth, and its important to use them in proportion.

We might just do this, you know.  We might just do this.

“I have been thinking a lot and it is important that we get a lot of energy into the game because that was the most disappointing thing last week.

“At the end of the game were passive and lacking confidence.”

“That’s what I want to see tomorrow: commitment and desire to win; desire to fight for each other and to be a team. “But two things we need to improve, the defending and (possession) we can’t lose the ball in dangerous areas, like we did last week.

“We go out to attack every time at home and we will do that tomorrow but we need to do that with defending as well. It is important to be patient.

“But first of all, I am looking for revenge for what we saw last week.”

Anyone else hear the Rocky Theme ?

As ever, the papers and the rest of the mainstream media are right behind the club. With qualification for the group stages of this years tournament a little less than certain at this stage, they have all been doing their best to replace the money earned at that level by touting our players all over the world. Well, England.

Fraser Forster, according to the Mirror, will join Southampton should Celtic exit tonight. £7m-or £8m -the reported fee. Virgil van Dijk may well follow him, and tomorrow I’m going to apply for the job of Southampton Chief Scout.

All I need to do is turn up for the interview with a match programme from any Celtic game last season and tell him I’ve a list of targets already in mind.

Kris Commons is reportedly the subject of a £7m bid from West Brom, which could just be agent talk with Commons apparently not getting the deal he wants from Peter Lawwell, who is not noted for trying to keep any players, especially if he has to pay them.

Then theres Adam Matthews, wanted by Swansea, Amido Balde by Lokeren-although there is a chance that a defender will move to Celtic as part of a swap deal for the big striker. I can’t remember the name of the defender, and can’t be bothered looking. If he is as good a defender as Balde is a forward then perhaps we should leave him where he is.

An interesting story in the Scotsman claims that, subject to UEFA approval, Celtics under 21s will be playing in a sixteen team elite tournament along with English, German, dutch and Portuguese sides. A great idea, and one way of developing our own players, which seems to be the plan for the next few years.

But thats not going to help us tonight.

What will help us tonight is allowing the team to do what they did last year. The players are more than capable of turning this around. If they are allowed to play to their strengths in a system they are familiar with, alongside players they are familiar with.

James Forrest could be on the bench. His pace and directness could be the key. As could Kris Commons behind Anthony Stokes and Leigh Griffiths. Whatever else you might say about Bonnie and Clyde, they will never stop trying.

Charlie Mulgrew will have to slot in beside Virgil van Dijk, with Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguerre either side of them, proving a bit of width. That leaves Adam Matthews, Nir Bitton and Stefan Johansen to provide cover and support the forwards from midfield. That allows for Teemu Pukki and James Forrest to join the fray with a half hour left to harass what will hopefully be a tired and under siege Legia defence.

Thats how I’d do it, and I would imagine most of us wouldn’t differ too much from that line up.

 Don’t take my word for it. Battling midfielder Stefan Johansen seems to agree;

“I don’t think so much about Legia’s weak areas, I think about our strengths. We didn’t play the best game in Warsaw.

“But, if we play our football tonight, everyone will see their weaknesses. We have the quality and team to score three goals.

“We need to step up our game a bit more compared to last week, but I think we can go through.

“The manager has made it clear what we need to do. It’s up to us to go out and do it and score the goals we need to get through.

“As a team we want to go to the Champions League. We know it means a lot to the fans and to the club. So, we will do everything we can to get there.”

“We should not have conceded the last two goals,” he admitted. “They also missed two penalties, so it could have been more.

“But, that game is done. Now we can only focus on tonight’s game. We know we still have a chance.

“We need to take this chance and try to put as much energy as we can into the game.”

Actually, I don’t want the players to tell us what they are going to do. I want them just to go out there and do it.

Barry McGonigle, who restores black and white photos, has come up with another cracker;

Embedded image permalink

Which should be pinned up on the dressing room wall tonight alongside the comments of the Legia midfielder.

Although its not too late for my own plan….

For those of us who grew up playing on red ash pitches, and learned the game the hard way, perhaps we should play the game at Celtic Park tonight after all, it would certainly put the Poles on the back foot. Especially if it rains;

Embedded image permalink

Well, if Moscow can play on their artificial pitch, why can’t we ? Probably have to borrow a couple of jackets for the goalposts , mind.

Meanwhile, we can exclusively reveal the new away kit for next season, as Celtic prepare for the possibility of playing at Ibrox Stadium for the first time in a number of years..

I made a little bit of a mistake with yesterdays quiz, and didn’t spot it in time. I meant to ask who the Sporting Lisbon manager was when Celtic beat them 5-0 back in 1983. So, without looking, who was it ?

Typical media having us accept a 7mill fee for Forster when we have already knocked back an 8 and a half mill effort.

We can definately do it tonight, it just depends on Delias tactics and whether or not he will change them if they are not working.

Come on the Celts. We’ll be there but we need you 11 players to turn up.

Funny how the media phrase things. Keith Jackboot in the Daily Ranger has us missing out on a £20 million Jackpot. When we qualify we get told we will get between £10 and £15million.

see a first division team got a taste of what’s to come this season – ending the game with 10 men. some things never change

Unfortunately the short time pain could see us out of Europe if we get beat in both competitions.

I thought Rocky was shite and never liked the theme tune either.

I don’t feel much better about Celtic’s chances tonight. We are a very ordinary team with a lot of ordinary players. Not one real superstar like Henrik, Lubo or even Paul McStay.

The manager is new and thinks throwing inexperienced players into very important games is a good idea. There is already talk about him not being at Celtic to get a second crack at the Champions League qualifiers.

We are not playing a Celtic Park and miss the benefit of that very special atmosphere.

The Polish team are confident – why shouldn’t they be? Celtic were crap in the first game and the scoreline could have been worse. Does anyone out there think that Celtic will not concede at least one goal tonight?

So how in Gods Holy Name can we expect anything other than another boot in the haw maws?

I hope and pray that I’m on tomorrow getting all sort of pelters from you lot and eating big humble Celtic pies. But I doubt it.

Have a good night.

As for tonight lets hope our management decide playing with a midfield for a change is a good idea. I would play as many players who know each other and have won in Europe before forest and griffiths from the start. Pukki wouldnt make the bench for me, neither would bergetae. I dont see it but I hope Im wrong.

Does anyone know how much we got from the Council for hosting the opening ceremony??

What ever it was it wasn’t worth it. Davey Provan pointed out earlier in the week that we are the only club of our stature in World football that would give up playing at our home ground for our most important game of the season. Considering we are famed for the atmosphere and results at home in Europe it really beggars belief.

The scenario of new manager with little investment in the team is exactly what happened to Mowbray. Sadly for him he was apportioned most of the blame for that disastrous season. Some of it was justified but a lot was the board in my opinion and they have let us down badly so far this summer – again.

It would be nice to have something other than laughing at this shower of shite for the coming season.

mowbraw was mad. 11 players in the xmass xfer window and mcgeady at lb. ffs I hope the benchmark never has a rival.

eveilgenius9

Agree about Mowbray he did make some terrible decisions. The board held him out to dry right from the off. He was promised players in the summer then wasn’t given the funds. Even after he sold a couple.

Then as you say he was given 11 players in Jan, which was mental by any stretch, of which I think 10 were loans. Not a recipe for success.

Re Rangers, how do they go teetering on the brink yet still sign guys like Boyd & Miller on big money?

E Tim’s slagged Frank off unfairly in an article this week. In all fairness could you guys get him to write a few articles from now on. He’d do a better job. At least he tells it as it is. Everything he said was right. Heart broken tonight, sickened at what we’ve become now. Il still travel up, I love my hoops. Sorry to be in a mood guys love the website. I’m just gutted. Wanna see a change at the top now. We’ll be back. HAIL HAIL

London you’re spot on, Ralph writes an article saying some of the same things but slaughters McAvennie for it, I’m happy at a media Tim having the balls to speak out against the goings on at Celtic Park, I wish more did it. Been saying it for far too many years now, not a single thing will ever change until Liewell and Dickmond are gone.

Delusional Celtic fans prepared to swallow whatever crap Lawwell
and co.feed us. It’s time people stopped fantasising about Celtic
and faced up to the stone cold reality that we are awful and being run
into the ground. This is the culmination of years of running down the playing side. The so called great business model has cost us millions
in lost revenue. I feel we’re laughing at the huns while we ourselves are in terminal decline . Oh dear maybe I’ll feel better in the morning but probably not….“

celtsfan67

Reap what you sow!!

Where do i start? Our squad is woeful… SQUAD….not team! Therefore the team is worse than woeful in CL terms.

That’s a start. Erm… ok – here we go –

Playing young guys in the team is fine – but NOT in the biggest matches – we should be blooding young guys into the team during the league season. (this should have happened last season).

Scott Brown – Our best player by a fucking country mile! And our ONLY leader. Deadhead can uck my airy rse. Without this guy our midfield is non-existent – as we have seen.

Without our captain we had not a single player capable of filling the hooped jersey.

The over the top optimism on here IS so reminiscent of the old celtic boards ‘celtic view’ it’s actually become laughable.

Look at some of the team v lisbon in 83 – compare it with our team tonight – pause………..

think………

how many would get into that team?

let me tell you – fuck all!

This is not the manager or the players fault. It is the fault of the celtic board. Why? Because, as i have said on here many times before downsizing to greet our scum ex foes has been the plan why? because it’s cheap!

Tonights result has been inevitable.

We have been shafted.

Deila is out of his depth, Collins is a snide little git who fucked off when it suited him and Lawwell and his Tory cohorts on the board are seriously taking the piss out of a support who seem to be accepting what these cunts are doing to our club. It is OUR club, not those bastards that have turned us into a laughing stock.

Celtsfan67, if you think Brown is our best player by a mile then all hope is lost as for me he’s one of the worst along with Mildew. Brown was the worst player in last seasons champions league and even domestically can’t reliably hit a five yard pass. He’s one of the MAJOR reasons we’re in the state we are. If brain dead broonie is our leader then we are dooooooomed! Nothing will change until Liewell and Dickmond are outed tho. Been a shambles now for years and just going from one embarrassment to the next, often relying on the Celtic Park atmosphere to paper over the cracks but now we have sinkholes all over the place. Big changes needed, those in charge need to f*ck off. The huns will catch up with us in one season domestically too which is just shocking. The positives of tonight tho were, at least now we don’t have to worry about losing our best players as is there anyone now you’d worry over if they left? Not me, they can all get tae f*ck.

After a game like that I don’t know what to say or think or where to begin. Gutted and more than confused. I want to hide.

Like my old pal Captain Beefheart Said:
“I’m gonna grown fins, get back with the mermaids again…”

Anywhere but here. 6-1? Mowbray, Barnes, Macari anyone? Be afraid, very afraid. We’ll know more about Deila really after about 3 SPL games. Who would want Forster or Van Dijk now?
What surprised me most is that we could not score against a team that might be as good as Motherwell or Dundee Utd.
Bright side? We would have been absolutely torn apart by any team in the group stages of the Champions League so let’s just wank around in the Europa League for a while.Deila, we’re warning you. Let’s see less tinkering and more real football—soon. I hope you don’t have any encores planned. This is Celtic FC not FC Fjiordfuck.

Time some realised we are no longer a Champions League level outfit. The only thing we can match these sides with is the level of Support and the noise they make.
Though last night Legia won that battle too quite comprehensively from what I was hearing.
We are simply nowhere near the Fiancial Spending clout needed to survive in that League and as proven last Season woefully short of the same calibre of player as most sides in there.
Wake up Bhoys we are moderately decent Scottish Championship strolling side.
Which in real terms is like saying the School Bully is going to take on The World Champion in a Big Prize Fight to prove how handy he is with his fists.
Only one outcome in fight like that.

When the team formerly known as Rangers were liquidated, I was of the opinion that this was a great chance for Celtic to consolidate their position at the top of Scottish football by bringing in real quality in every position so that the tribute act would never be in any position to ever take us on in future, and that would mean a year on year challenge in Europe. Sadly, Liewell and the rest of our awful board decided on the opposite course of action and decimated our squad, continuing to do so and boasting about balance sheets.
This could not go on forever and now we are to be seen as a piss poor side with no footballing ambition at all. Essentially, we will be viewed as a once great club scraping the bargain basements and hoping for the best from a bad bunch.
The strategy has failed, as it inevitably must do and it’s now a case of chickens coming home to roost.
Furious supporters are demanding that the board should go, but who would take over? Who would want to?
The club are a total shambles at the moment, players, management and board. We are back to the biscuit tin mentality and fielding a team filled with players whose minds are on transfer deals and not on the team, hence why there weren’t many tackles flying in.
Shocking stuff and I would think that there’s much more of it to come at a half empty stadium this coming season unless things change drastically.
