Celtic Diary Friday August 8: Back in the Fast Lane Again.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the little Corsican himself, once said he would rather have a lucky general than a good one. Peter Lawwell might have cause to remember these words as at the time of writing , UEFA are currently sitting down to discuss whether or not Legia Warsaw fielded an ineligible player in Wednesdays game against Celtic.

This is the player, who came on as a substitute with just a few minutes left at Murrayfield;

Embedded image permalink

The player, Batosza Bereszynski, was under suspension for the St. Pats game in the previous round, but he is only deemed to have served that suspension if he appears on the squad list. It seems he didn’t;

Embedded image permalink

So, therefore, the game is forfeit. That means Celtic are awarded the tie 3-0, making it 4-4 on aggregate, and Celtic progress on away goals.

Unless you believe this fellow, from a Rangers website;

Embedded image permalink

It seems cut and dried, before the meeting, a UEFA spokesman said;

 “There are 2 possibilities. UEFA either find the player was eligible & nothing happens or Legia will forfeit & Celtic will go through”

They’d better get a move on. The draw is at eleven o’clock.

Embedded image permalink

Better put the tunes on….this is more exciting than the bloody game was. And we probably have a better chance of getting a result.

If Celtic are allowed back into the champions League some say we should refuse the offer and allow Legia to take their place. After all, it would require the greenest of tinted specs to think that the use of Bereszynski made any difference to the result, and Legia were worthy winners. It was 6-1, not 2-1.

But, speaking for myself, balls to the lot of them. If we get through, we get through, and I frankly don’t care if we do it by playing ” pure, inventive football ” or locking the other team in the dressing room so they register a no-show.

The latter might be worth trying , actually, because the only thing to come out of this is we will be guaranteed a spot in the Europa League group stages, and by then, all the players who want to leave can be shown the door, and we can get on with the job of trying to win something this season.

If we are stuck in the Europa play offs, Celtic will face one of the following five teams;

6 RNK Split (CRO)
7 AC Omonia (CYP)
8 KSC Lokeren OV (BEL)
9 FC Aktobe (KAZ)
10 FC Astra (ROU)

If UEFA award the Legia game to us, we will face one of these in the Champions League;

Embedded image permalink

A decision is due at 9.30am.

Its 9.28. As is customary close to the end of a game which is on the telly, and its a bit nervy, i’m going to pop outside for a cigarette.

9.42. Still nothing, but the word on the street is that if Celtic are awarded a 3-0 win , Peter Lawwell will appeal the decision, because he’s already sold most of the players.

Speaking of the players, no matter what happens in the next few minutes, can I just take a minute to remind them that regardless of how they feel about manager Ronny Deila and his assistant John collins, they are not playing for them ?

They are playing for Celtic.

Early tweets suggest that it will be marked down as a clerical error, and not a breach of the rules. Lord Nimmo Smith obviously on the panel.

9.49. Awaiting confirmation , as Legia officials are told the result of the hearing.

This is worse than watching the game….

Its now been confirmed , at least on twitter, that Celtic are back in the champions league after this;

Embedded image permalink

Ally McCoist has demanded to know the names of those on the panel.

Frankly, it seems like we’ve been given a second chance. Don’t make an arse of it again, Peter.

Now, what shall I do today ?

I’m a life long tim, Celtic should cop it sweet & decline the invitation to return to the CL qualifiers as our credibility & good name are far more important than taking a tanking.
We were not good enough at anytime over 2 legs against a team 10 mates with my dog in goals could have caned.
Lawwell do the right thing on behalf of Celtic & offer Legia their rightful place.
They could have brought on my mum & her scone loving pals in the 86th minute & it wouldn’t have made a jot of difference to the result.

I agree. Decline the offer. Keep our good name in tact and show some balls Lawwell. We’ll get tanked anyways. At least Legia would have a chance. I’d like to see this team earn its place in
the Europa League.

We will take it because the refereeing in Warsaw was appalling and because rules are rules. I feel sorry for the Legia players because they were the better team. I’m also enjoying how the Huns are going apoplectic on the web. Anyway, let’s use this opportunity to do something positive. Over the long run our team has been screwed in Europe so many times (remember the cheat Amoruso) we should just revel in something going our way.

And don’t forget that HMRC are going to go after TFOD again thus making any idiot that was thinking of investing will now instead get his Nike’s on and run in the opposite direction
The Revenue is quoted as saying

It said: “HMRC continues to believe that schemes using employee benefit trusts to avoid tax do not work.

“Around 700 users of EBT schemes have already settled with us resulting in around £800m of tax and NICs (National Insurance Contributions) being paid.

“We expect more to settle in the near future.

“These are avoidance schemes and we will continue to tackle those who do not pay up.

“It is not right that a small minority can avoid paying what they owe while the vast majority pay the right tax on their earnings.

“This case represents an important principle.”

I fecking love important principles!!

Ashamed to be a Tim today, lousy one on Legia. A small error that made no difference puts them out when they played us off the park both legs and even more embarrassingly they could’ve easily gone through regardless of the 3-0 forfeit if they’d taken a few more of their chances in the first game. Our shameful board of course couldn’t let this go as it’s all about the money, after a tanking like that they should have. On to the next embarrassment against Maribor now, the game should be boycotted to show our board what we think of their failures regardless of anything that happens between now and then. We got an easier draw with Maribor than we possibly would’ve for the Europa league play off too which no doubt will delight Liewell and Dickmond, more lovely money :). Will see how big of b*****ds they really are now (as if there was any doubt) when we sell some of our best players (well some of our players) anyway and sign no one (apart from the obvious freebies or loanees ofc).
Sack the board

Not me. If you break the rules you pay the forefiet. Its only logical. Thier fans an team were arseholes over there as well. Diving is also cheating. This gives our management and board a second chance. Lets see if they take it.

bogbhoy

Reply to  fredcdobbs

I agree if you break the rules you should pay the forfeit but only when the break of the rules results in an unfair advantage that affects the outcome of the game. This was just a genuine small error, a bit of a mix up due to the st pats game. How embarrassing would it have been if we got the 3-0 forfeit and they still went through which so easily could’ve been the case. Don’t feel sorry for their fans as aye they seem like scumbags but lousy on the players who destroyed us. We should’ve acted with more integrity here and never brought this to eufas attention, we were beaten off the park fair and square imo and Legia deserve the place not us. I think Uefa will overturn the decision anyway on appeal which will lead to more embarrassment for us tho I think we’re already the laughing stock of Europe atm. A chance for redemption maybe, a chance that should never have come around. Will our board take it and bring in players to help us against Maribor? Will they f*ck. If we do get through we can look fwd to some tankings in the group stages.

bogbhoy

Reply to  fredcdobbs

Don’t think they had an extra man against St Pats. My understanding is, the suspended guy they didn’t register for the St Pats game and left him out of the squad, ie didn’t register him and needed to do so in order for his ban to come into effect. So when they registered him against us they thought the ban was already served. If they did register him via St Pats and then he was banned then yeah the squad would be a man down but not even sure how that works, if they registered someone in his place against St Pats or just left the squad a man down.Either way it seemed a genuine clerical sort of error, they played us off the park and the punishment is not proportionate to the crime. I hope it’s overturned personally and they get their place back. Don’t wanna line desmonds pockets with CL money after that embarrassment and no signings for last match plus Legia deserve it, we don’t.

fredcdobbs
9 years ago
Reply to  fredcdobbs

for the suspensionto be served legia had to name him in the squad which has a limit. To do that the legia squad would be a man down. They never did this and played with a full squad. Allowing Legia through gives them another unfair advantage vs stpats. They are going to have to take this up the bakey Im afraid.

Who would complain or notice such a thing? Either way if our board aren’t to blame for it they’re still a great big bunch of b*****ds and imo it’s an unfair decision on Legia. Had no affect on the outcome of the game.

You’ve got to laugh. Everyone wants the rules applied when it comes to Sevco but when it’s our own club, they don’t want the rules applied. Highly illogical captain.
For me, it’s the correct decision, Legia fecked it up big time, not our fault.

It’s more anger on my part towards our board. After that result they should be drop kicked out of Celtic Park but now with the easy draw the b*****ds will be sitting with smiles like Cheshire cats counting the money in their minds. Legia did f*ck up, I think the punishment is far too harsh and it’s a bad rule but that’s their fight. I’m just disgusted by the goings on at our club and it being continually accepted.It will be interesting to see how exactly this rule break was discovered. Very harsh on Legia it has to be said. However, if you make the same error with a player serving a suspension who enters the field of play in a cup competition in even Youth football or Amateur football then the same punishemnt applies – you get thrown out of the tournament – so we got a break, let’s take it and win the Maribor game.

Rules are rules if don’t have any it’s anarchy, for all those people saying we should give the tie to them why ? Do you think they or anyone else would do it for us.
The rules are there for everyone and they also broke it against st pats cause they put a player in the banned players place and had a full squad so they didn’t recieive any punishment by having a player less to pick.
Now get the players that we wer supposed to be looking at and also let the fans into next game for a tenner or less.

Hatem Ben Arfa – frozen out at Newcastle and could be the creative midfielder we are crying out for.

As well as the above, we need a quality striker badly and something must be done about this before the next game. When I say quality I mean in the £4/5mil pound bracket – not Ronaldo.

Get real Lawell and give the fans something to cheer about.

Bhoys,bhoys, calm doon. I think we’re all Tims and care about our team. Let’s move on. We’ve been given a lifeline. Also, we might play Legia sometime again in the Europa Cup so we both have a chance to prove something. Meanwhile, we don’t need any new players. We just need the right formation, tactics and attitude. In Europe,caution away, cavalier at home. Seriously, our players are good enough. For now, let’s forget Desmond and Lawwell and get to the Champions League. Meanwhile, we might prove that Henrik Larsson was no fluke. Let’s just go find a second him! What Lawwell has to stop doing is letting good players like Ledley and Samaras (in Europe anyway)go for want of a few grand more a week. We ain’t talkin about £60 million just a few more grand tacked on to the wages of players like Commons.

According to UEFA it was one off their officials that spotted the offence
The poles have appealed ,but their defence of ignorance would not hold up in a normal court,and in the end it,s their own fault this happened,as in this country a team playing an ineligible player,loses the tie,and admin errors aren,t taken into account,so unless they draught in ogilvie
or dallas for the appeal it would appear the decision will stand

If Ladbrokes / paddy power pay out on a 3 – 0 win, do you imagine anybody with a winning ticket will refuse the money?
If Reykjavic were advised we’d f@@@ed up and they were re-instated, do you think they’d refuse?
Leiga embarrassed us over the two legs, of that there is no doubt, but they broke the rules – why wouldn’t we accept the chance we’ve been given?
My understanding is that Celtic are a seeded team and Leiga aren’t. Therefore, if UEFA were to overturn the decision, would they then have to redraw the CL / EL fixtures?

Doc
9 years ago

Was happy with the Sion reversal, as they deliberatly cheated, but indifferent to this call as it was a geniune mistake. Feel sorry for the Legia guy responsible for squad registrations, unless hes a club hero, hes getting sacked.

Unless theres a complete reversal in our fortunes, I think we’ll get absolutely pumped in Europe, but I’d rather get pumped with CL money than UEFA Cup money.

The board can keep Forster and Van Dijk by splashing out on a quality player, showing them that Celtic are an ambitious club thats going places and if they stay here, they’ll go far. We need a quality player just to show the squad the club is getting better and so will they if their here and that the new manager values talent, not just fitness. We need a Moravcik rather than a Mo Farrah.

celtsfan67
9 years ago

Stunningly good news!!

I’ve just cracked open my first beer!! Happy days indeed.

Now – we MUST buy players…the squad is piss poor (I hate to repeat myself constantly!). The manager must be given good money to invest in the squad.

We need at least four players. Now Lawell – go and get it done – give the manager the backing, galvanize the squad, galvanize the fans, get into the champions league and finally get the club into a dominant position of strength. Get paradise jumping again.

Please don’t pass up this gift from god!!!!

A better way of being in two minds (see above)

One. We don’t need any new players, just pay the ones we have more money=Forster/Van Dijk/Commons/Matthews (or like Ledley, Samaras and Hooper)
Two. Buy more players?!!! What, like Balde, Rogic, Lassad, Bangura? No, like Larsson/Izzy/ In England if they spend £20 on a player who is no good they just spend another £25 million. Lenny wasted millions of our money. Leave Deila alone for now. Spending more money is not the solution—unless we can find another player who is good but stays long enough to make a real difference. Like Larsson. C’mon smart arses, go find him or else pay Commons that money to stay and score thirty goals for us.Griffiths is plenty good enough to score goals in Europe but he can’t if he doesn’t play.

celtsfan67

Reply to  Devoy45

Look at our first eleven….it is bollocks. We absolutely need to spend money. To suggest we buy someone ‘like larsson’ is absurd – the guy was practically a one-off. If you are happy with the team we have right now then i’m glad for you. If the squad remains as it is we will not qualify for the CL and will struggle badly in the EL.

Sadly, we need investment in the squad. A aquad which has been ignored for two to three seasons.
