Celtic Diary Monday June 12: Be Careful What You Wish For

According to the Daily Mail, and reporter Stephen MacGowan, Celtic are in face to face talks with Brendan Rodgers over a return to the post of team manager.

It’s not yet known which of Rodger’s many faces will attend the talks.

Despite his moonlight flit to Leicester, quite a few supporters want to see him return, because he had been fairly successful domestically, winning three trebles, including the Invincible season, for which he is rightly praised.

And he did modernise the facilities behind the scenes, upgrading, to say the least, the medical and training facilities.

So much so on the medical side, that if I recall correctly, quite a number of his players spent quite a lot of time there,

Then, in a fit of what could almost be decribed as temper, having failed to gain complete control of the playing side, he headed south to work on his plan to get Leiceister out of the money spinning EPL.

Which, in fairness, took him longer than he had expected, but he got there in the end.

As one of what we believe to be three candidates, Rodgers is seen as the safe bet…yeah, i know….the one who would guarantee dominance over our friends on the other side of the river.

Frankly, though, we should be aiming a little higher than remaining in pole position ahead of a club/company that has lost several first team players, for no return, and is looking to replace them with loannees and players who are out of contract at their current clubs, and , indeed, out of a first team place there.

With no money available and a rookie manager in charge, if the reason that Rodgers is favourite just around keeping them in a box they are already struggling to get out of, we need to take a long and hard look at what we want from our club.

Rodgers was out of his depth in Europe, providing some of our most embarassing results and peformances in our history, and single handedly destroying the fortress parkhead myth.

He has little eye for the future, usually becuase he’s a short term boss, and yes, i know they alla re, but at least Postecoglou left something to be built on.

There should be little concern about players following a manager whose vision they bought into, only to see him declare he had an entirely different vision for someone else.

Players do take that sort of thing into account, and those left from the forst Rodgers era, along with all the other background staff, will no doubt have given their versions of events to the more recent additions…

If Rodgers has split the support, one can only wonder how much he has split the staff.

And imagine him trying to talk a top Celtic player out of leaving for the EPL when an offer comes in, when he himself took the first offer that came along.

The players and staff  would have to get on with it if he was appointed, and they weren’t happy with it, but there would at best be a lack of enthusiasm for what they do, and at worst a complete disregard.

Enzo Maresco, who is still the talk of the ranch, was part of the team that joined the elite club of big treble winners, although i would hasten to remind any Manchester city fans that hardly remembers the second man on the moon, and even those who do would struggle to name the eighth.

There must be a serious interest in his capability to build on what is there already from the board, and that’s not surprising, given the effort put in by the board to get Celtic to a point where the club has not only a great bank balance, but a significant amount tied up in player..and other assets.

Which is why it’s strange that Celtic are looking at Rodgers when more or less any manager currently looking for work, or indeed, in work, wouldn’t seriously consider a job at a place where there is quality in the squad, money in the bank and a spot in the group stages of the champions League on offer.

Sometimes we really do let ourselves down when it comes to our own publicity.

By appointing a manager simply because he’ll guarantee keeping us ahead of “rangers ” is showing a lack of ambition that can only mean they have either brought us down to our level, or we’re trying to revive the old firm brand by keeping it relevant.

We mentioned a third candidate, although we have no idea who it is, and it may just be that whilst he is of high quality, he will be seen as a sort of compromise candidate for a board that is just as split on the issue as the fans and staff appear to be.

You’ll have heard several names, most of which have been linked to Celtic by their own agents to raise their own profile, so there’s every possibility a third name will leap out and surprise us, at around the same time he is announced as manager.

Though I would be very suspicious of any foreign types with a Lurgan accent and badly dyed ginger hair…..

On Saturday, we considered this…..

Yes there is a pipe running across to Ibrokes.

We can mump and moan about whoever the anointed one is, but the real issue is the lack of forward planning by the numbskulls that run the club. Irrespective of the fifty or so individuals nominated. By the media, there has to be a five year plan. Well and good beating the zombies, but the club credibility suffers from poor Euro football. This has gone on for decades, at least Ange seemed to be going in the right direction.
The Brenda would be a safe bet in Scotland, but in UEFA land will probably be found out.
As for Maresca he is a project, Ange at least had managed for over a decade. Farke well that about says it all, or is he there to deal with Cuntwell?
Over at bargain basement world the media keep finding diamonds on the soothside, as Micky plots in his cave.

Ralph good diary as always

but,

Unfortunately irrespective of who the Mgr is finishing ahead of sevco next season is the only game in town as winning the league means direct access to the CL group stages again and the £30-£40m it bring whether we like it or not. Two years of this sort of money could transform our club – coaching/medical standards and facilities not to mention improve the playing squad.

As for BR – Did I like the way he left us, no not really. Was he provoked by PL continually interfering with signings ie McGinn and Shved to name but 2. He is a good competent and experienced Mgr and that is what we need. Yes Europe he could have done better but but the only really poor performance was Barcelona IICRC and what do we realistically expect against elite clubs. Just imagine if we had got McGinn and any other signings he wanted? I mean the board has offered AP a £30m kitty to stay!

There is always a risk unfortunately but in my opinion he is the least risky option out of all the names quoted. Would he move on again if successful, yes I am sure he would just like AP and any quality players would do for the riches of the EPL I mean we can’t even keep hold of or best youth players recently because they can earn more at bigger (financially) clubs.

Anyway only time/results will tell whether the board have picked the right Mgr so fingers crossed.

This must be the first time ever reading about Rodgers’ time at Celtic without mentioning his war with Peter Lawwell to put the entire affair into context.

The real question isn’t whether Rodgers comes back it’s whether Dermot Desmond will sack his chairman or not to accommodate him.

Just on the BR thing – to the point re home grown talent – he did reenergize Forrest and Brown, bring Tierney on (maybe a little to much IIRC), Christie, Armstrong and Ajer. We have lost a lot of youth talent – maybe there is a case there for BR…….

Out of the three or four main names that are currently being bandied about, my preferred choice would be Kjetil Knutsen, who has transformed Bodo Glimt into the dominant force in Norwegian football over these last 5 years or so as well as moulding them into a competitive unit that has punched well above their weight in the European arena despite the club having had to consistently sell their most prized assets. He has successfully managed to impose an attractive and effective style of play and the prospect of him coming to a club like ours with the playing assets already available and a much healthier spending budget than what he’s used to is exciting to say the least. That said, we could do a lot worse than bring back Rodgers but I wouldn’t be surprised if the final choice is a surprise, i.e. someone who has been completely off our radar thus far (a bit like our last appointment for the position).

Hands up. I’ve seen ‘llRC’ popping up in posts a lot lately, so for the uninitiated (moi), WTF does it mean?

For me it’s Brenda, ticks all the boxes. If he leaves after 2 years, so what. It’s the norm these days.
2 good years would almost certainly guarantee us 3/years Champions League money in a row. If he sees off Me(n)tal Mickey at the DebtDome even better. Starve them of real money for 2 more years should complete their Espanyolification for the rest of the decade and more. Der hunn will do ‘walkin away’, it’s in their DNA and there isn’t a great deal of access to legal deep rich pockets for them anymore.
Good luck to Barry Robson next year, 2nd place could be up for grabs.

Rodgers left quickly but agreed by Celtic with £10m compo that swelled the coffers, which were already bulging with record revenue and profits in his tenure, after losses under Lennon and Deila.

Although the Huns were level with us at the turn of the year, we had gone on a terrific run of 10 straight wins, scoring loads of goals and only conceding 1 Well dodgy goal to break them.

The league was in the bag and only the Cup was seriously up for grabs.

He also left with 4.5 months (more than postecoglou) until we had any European games, which was plenty of time to source a full-clothed replacement.

That, that didn’t happen, is on our penny-pinching, wretched board and not Rodgers.

having failed to gain complete control of the playing side”

Well, yes, that’s what top managers demand and the ones who don’t are the likes of Lennon and Deila, who are loved by the board for their subservience.

He wanted higher level players (Castagne and Schar were mentioned in dispatches) but, of course, they were too rich for our board (nb the money was there from the fans and manager/players input).

In Europe, we qualified for the Champions League Group Stages, 2 out of 3 times, after that became ridiculously tough and we dropped down to the Europa League in 1 of those.

Yes, we took some right royal rodgerings from the creme de la creme but the only tie, I can think of, that we lost and would have been expected to win was Athens and even then, I’m not sure a Scottish team would have been favourites over a Greek one and, without Lawwell’s wrecking behaviour, I would have been confident of victory.

By comparison, postecoglou failed to qualify in his 1 attempt, and recorded our worst points total ever, when we gained automatic entry.

Of course, our performances were pure dead brilliant and we absolutely battered Madrid (agg lost 8-1) and were also spectacular against Leipzig (agg lost 5-1), Leverkusen (agg lost 7-2) and Bodo (agg lost 5-1).

The only players I can remember criticising Rodgers were Dembele and Boyata and that was because he tried to stop them leaving.

I also believe the talk of a split in Celtic fans isn’t really a thing, other than noise on social media and blogs. Its reminiscent of the mass boycotting of Season Tickets that was going to happen 2 years ago but was just hot air.

I’m sure, if there’s any churn in STs then it will be more than compensated by those on the waiting list, which can only be a positive.

If there’s a better candidate than Rodgers, then great, but, if he’s the best, then that’s who we should appoint.

The huns expectations are off the radar( even more than usual). I half expecting them to fail to qualify for CL groups, and then drop points early in the league. If they fail to beat us at Ibrox and one bad result in the Europa the subway loyal will turn ugly……(uglier )…..perhaps that’s the natural order, wee Barry was on about…
