Celtic Diary Saturday May 29: Eddy Put to Beddy

Eddie Howe won’t be Celtic’s next manager.

After what seems like taking an eternity to make up his mind he finally decided he didn’t want the job after all.

That alone should indicate that he wasn’t exactly over enthusiastic about it in the first place, and maybe he just fancies a part in the remake of the Disney classic Crystal Palace, or some other comfortable number where he can while out his days without too much hassle.

Lets face it, matters such as the CEO getting his house firebombed, riots on the street when somone else wins the league and the novel and refreshing way the league is ran in Scotland probably aren’t for everyone.

Thats not to absolve the board from any blame on the fiasco that leaves Celtic yet again without a manager at such a crucial time of the season, they should have got a written commitment from Howe that he was coming, and not allowed him to string them along.

Thats what appears to have happened, and if its the case that he wasn’t one hundred per cent sure when asked, he should have been dismissed as unsuitable and then we move on to the next candidate.

But lets face it, the environment a Celtic manager has to work in, and thats without the board taken into consideration, isn;t the most attractive. We’re not going to get a top level manager, we need one though, who is on the way up, and who is not afraid of a challenge.

What we need is someone who lives far enough away not to have noticed that sort of thing.

What we need is someone who wins things, at say club and international level.

What we need is someone who doesn’t take any shit from referees or anyone else, including players.

Someone off the EPL/Sky radar but known to at least one of our players who can vouch for him.

Someone who actually has a job, and not someone whose last job saw him being sacked after relegation.

And most of all, if we have a director of football in place who knows of such a man, we should go with that director of football.

There has been a lot of work done behind the scenes, which means that the next choice won’t be a panic move, and the news that Celtic will move for Ange Postecoglou has been met with a collective groan and a major headache for the police searching for the man who firebombed Peter Lawwell’s  house as the list of suspects grew exponentially overnight.

The speed with which his name cropped up suggested that a plan was in place, and possibly even that Ange…I’m fucked if I’m typing Postecoglou every time I mention him, I still haven’t got the hang of Edouard….was not only a second choice, but happy to be a second choice.

He’s the guy that told Tom Rogic to quit Celtic to further his international career when he was Australia manager, a period that saw him win the Asian Nations Cup, and bear in mind some fans would happily take a manager from the international stage who got Scotland to the Euros by beating Israel over a series of about a dozen matches.

Ange also won the J league with Yokohama and won praise for the way in which he did it.

Brisbane roar fans still speak of him with reverence, and Australian journalists haven;t been this excited since Kylie Minogue told them she was off to record a record in London.

Ange ticks all of the boxes above, and from a few bits and pieces I read and wathced last night two or three things stand out.

His teams play attractive and entertaining football.

They play with desire and passion.

He takes no shit from the media.

And intriguingly, his Japanes translator once got booked for repeating what he said, implying that he’s not the sort of guy to watch his charges on a laptop.

In one interview he says that managers have lost the power of communication, part of the result of a society that largely now communicates with its fingers and rarely does face to face conversation.

His communication skills, not speaking Japanese, to do that and get his message across to the Yokohama players must be phenomenal.

All managers are a gamble, but some managers less so because their strengths match the environment they are in.

Ange may not be a big name, and may well be unheard of by many of not most supporters, but to demean his achievements is on a par with those who demean our own achievements simply because they were in Scotland.

Gabriella Marcoti, a respected football journalist…something we don;t have in Scotland….wrote this about him….

At 50, Postecoglou feels he’s entered his maturity as a coach, though he says he’s always learning. He’s not too proud to learn from his setbacks. In 2007, he was fired as coach of the Australian U20 and U17 national sides. He reacted by going to coach for a season in the Greek third division, at a tiny club called Panachaiki. He went back to his roots and he was rewarded. He returned to Australia and eventually took over the Brisbane Roar, whom he led to two A-League titles, during which he also enjoyed a 36 game undefeated streak. He then spent a season with the Melbourne Victory before landing the Socceroos job.

He’s committed to Australia, but he knows his career path might one day lead him elsewhere. If it does, he knows some may baulk at his roots. But he’ll turn it into a positive.

Aussie journalist Daniel Garb seems to have had his frock blown up by the news….

Australian football woke up in raptures this morning to the news that former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou is set to take over as manager at Scottish giants Celtic, in an unprecedented move for the Australian game.

While the deal is yet to be completed, all of the major media outlets in Scotland are reporting that it is imminent, and that the 55-year-old from Melbourne will take charge of the 51-time Scottish champions.

He will be tasked with masterminding Celtic’s quest to wrestle back the title from fierce rivals Rangers, who this year ended a run of nine straight Scottish Championships for the team they call ‘The Hoops’.

So why have Celtic gone for a man who is completely unknown to Scottish football fans?.

Postecoglou doesn’t need this to prove he can manage at a high level. The J-League, where he is currently based, is a top competition. But in order to get to the top of the game, which is competition in Europe, this is a necessary step.

If you can remove the myopia of a purely European football lens, his string of Australian domestic titles, Asian Cup triumph with the Socceroos, and most notably the miraculous J-League crown with Yokohama that ended their 15-year title drought and came in just his second season in a nation where he doesn’t even speak the native tongue, are outstanding achievements.

Furthermore, his style of football which is so attractive on the eye, so dominating in attack and suffocating of the opposition in defence, is an easy sell to a club with expectations of being ruthless winners both by the week and the season.

Remember when we were all expecting Guus Hiddink and they unveiled Martin O’Neill? I’m not afraid to say that I was one of the many disappointed fans that day but I’m also not afraid to admit how wrong I was! I’m hoping that in a few years I’ll feel the same about Angie Pentecost, if that’s who is indeed to be manager. I wasn’t particularly enamoured with the idea of Howe tbh but everyone ele seemed to think he’d be great. I guess we’ll see what happens next for him at his next club and wheter or not we missed out or dodged a bullet.

You can dress it up anyway you want to, it’s still a shambolic decision three months in the making. Three long putrid months of trying to second guess what was going on and never a peep, just a series of hint’s from journalist’s in the know. The D. R. as the Celtic boards choice of mouth-piece, common, a paper filled with Hun journalists who salivate at the thought of doing Celtic down. All of this when the Celtic support were being kept in the dark and fed snippets, hint’s of a top manager being appointed, fed with the belief that there was major changes coming from the top and that the new manager would bring his own team and that he would be the one bringing in his own players. And now we watch on as another “Left Field” appointment is made, Delia -esque. Taken for mugs once again. This appointment has all the makings of a Greek Tragedy, welcome to Agamemnon.

Delia -esque, your having a laugh mate, i was more intrigued by the new CEO, new director of football, sports science and new manager, Howe was part of the new setup, be honest Howe was living off the past, recording videos of how his team setup is a bit soft, we may have indead dodged a disaster, if the new setup supports a half decent manager who indead doesn’t take any shit we may land on our feet.

Who knows what lies ahead. lies is the common board speak especially at AGMs. The Celtic Trust is the latest victim, like the Resolutioners, led down the “Yellow Brick Road” to no-where. I would welcome any new manager who will not take any shit, but he would not last one solitary season, because true to form Peter Lawwell was/is the puppet master, pulling all the managers strings. Who is scouting the new players, defining the targets, preparing for the new season? It’s three months since Lennon left, three months of stagnation. If there is to be a complete clear-out, I would welcome that, we had that with BR and see what happened to him, Howe he was treated. Being a complete optimist, I live in hope, but previous form tells us not to expect too much. Fergal Harkin of Man.City, Lawwells son Paul works under Harkin, if Harkin leaves, then Paul gets a promotion, PL 17 year long tentacles are far reaching. 3 months of stagnation, the only shit i smell comes from above.

Donegal man, Fergal Harkin, Manchester City’s DoF – Mark Lawwell, P.Lawwell’s son, who works for City Group. Harkin got Lawwell’s son the job and he has progressed to Chief Scout for the City Group and is expected to take Harkins job. Deila, who also works for the City Group as New York City manager. Harkin recommended Deila to Lawwell. Guess who recommended Postecoglou to Celtic. Fergal Harkin, guess who is going to be Celtic’s DoF. Harkin. The Lawwell’s tentacles spread large… Beware.

‘The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.’ Shakespeare may not have been Burns, who mentioned ‘The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley.’ The trouble with tyrants and narcissists, is their egos are so strong they cannot see fault in their actions. And if the lesson is not taken, they are sure to repeat, and repeat, and repeat… Dr Venglos, Lennedy and now Ange. Not sure if it is short for Angel as it is missing an l. Similar to the Celtic boards missing the best of all human senses. Common sense. We head disastrously into the new season, with another 40+ millions ready to be missed. Year after year. Money that would rebuild the squad and bring in more and more till PL would feel like Pablo Escobar as we squander happily our hard-earned cash. A fellow Bhoy mentioned we need someone not from Celtic stock. Fresh ideas he said. I mentioned Stein and McNeill, that Lisbon Lions team were stylists. Yes, deserve the massive pride we have in them, but they could be snarling beasts when required. No softness there. Lenny weakened and so did our ambition. Lawwell is hiding in plain sight and thinks the Celtic family are foolish enough not too notice. Waving a false 50 under our noses will quieten the masses while he puts up the fences and pull down their heart-felt banners and flags, taking away our free-speech. Wonder if PL will have the bravery to stand amongst the Green-Brigade and let them know his thoughts anytime soon? They would identify with Keano, a man who speaks from the heart and accepts only effort and pride. Yes I agree Roy, why are the players celebrating qualifying for the Champs League? It is your duty to be the best. But those who cannot be controlled are overlooked by the users and control-freaks that make up our board and their appointed cartel. ‘May the road rise to meet you with first summer rays.’ David Harris. I fear instead it may otherwise be PL with his knife. HH!

Fergal Harkin – Manchester City. – City Group DoF. Boss of Mark Lawwell.
Ronnie Delia – recommended by Fergal Harkin, to Peter Lawwell for Celtic Manager.
Delia still works for City Group as New York Manager, also part of the City Group.
Ange Postecoglou, was recommended by Fergal Harkin to Lawwell, as the next Celtic Manager.
When Harkin becomes the DoF for Celtic, Peter Lawwell’s son Mark, takes over from Fergal Harkin.

The Puppet Master is still pulling the strings, you can bet that he is scouting new players and sounding them out. Once you hold the strings, it’s difficult to let them go….

How sad that you believe that Celtic fans match the other side that have sent bombs and bullets, proven in law. You have no proof that it was a fan that poured an accelerant in his cars, this then set the house on fire, don’t quote the media. As for the shambles that is last minute Liewell, how many deals has he screwed up. He did not bring in ONeill, Rodgers or Strachan, his were the also rans Mowbray, Delilah and simply because Lenny was there did he get the job. His record on transfers is shocking, all to make a buck. The attitude of the CEO and the board towards the supporters is pathetic, they hang them out to dry, rip them off and even offer a £50.00 voucher. The other mob defend their rampaging zombies to the enth degree. Even if he was to bring in Guardiola he has made such a pigs dinner if it that would have a difficult ending. The CEO and the board Wankier, Wilson, Ferguson all of them should be gone, even their brilliant statement on the value of season tickets is a mickeytake.
This is a disaster beyond the Kelly/White era if you do not see that, then listen to what’s being said, ah but wait Angie is the answer, what wisdom.

I think it’s clear that if Celtic are in “advanced talks” so soon after Howe’s rejection they are looking at someone who wants the job more than anything and sees it as a chance to enter and perhaps start progressing in UK if not European leagues. Someone who doesn’t mind being second or third or even fourth choice. Such a person won’t set conditions for taking over the job – in other words it will be someone in the Deila mould! Ange P fits the bill. It’s a big risk especially with Strachan and Kennedy on the coaching staff and no scout in the door. I think if Celtic get pumped in the early stages of European football (and that is a strong possibility) then it will be the beginning of the end. Yes, it could all unravel that quickly for a new manager -presuming it gets knitted in the first place. If I were a season ticket holder I certainly wouldn’t be renewing and as someone who lives in Asia I won’t be subscribing to Celtic TV. It’s not a question of loyalty it’s a question of respect. Clearly the board do not respect the fans or the ambitions of the fans.

For me this is not about a Big Name appointment, this appointment was supposed to be part of a thoughtful, professional appointment process, unlike the last managerial appointment in the Hampden changing rooms. The rumours of Howes appointment started to emerge three months ago as we put all our eggs in the Howe basket without tying up under contract his management team, shambolic. Peter Lawwell the “Puppet Master” is still pulling the strings, of managerial appointments and player scouting, he brings an accountants eye to players coming in and out at Celtic, that to me stinks of non-accountability. Three months of stagnation and then a last minute panic selection. You can read it like a book, Howe, no-go, “phone a friend” and hey presto, sorted. Where is the thoughtful – professional – appointment- process? No-Where. Pure Guff and the support are supposed to just suck it up. Bye, bye Peter, don’t look back and Barnier?

In ecumenical spirit, I recommend the article in today’s “Guardian” (I won’t provide a link as this comment would be limboed for moderation) on the financial stresses underlying the current managerial merry go round of giant European clubs. It’s easy for us to snipe from our private lives at perceived failings by the Board but perhaps the Board is privy to data we’re not aware of? Maybe the crunch many have expected to decimate the hyper-indebted world of football is rapping on the door like impatient sheriff officers, and the Celtic board is continuing to play safe?

And on the Howe saga, part of me hopes that the “planned process” was a red herring in a move to provide space for the real target to be tied down. The clusterfvck scenario is undoubtedly embarrassing for Celtic but for Howe it may be radioactive: as a young guy what kind of post can he reasonably expect to be considered for in the wake of finding an excuse to knock back a club the size of Celtic: Swindon? Peterborough?

Maybe I should give up on the hopium.

Cortes, I was just reading about a Russian billionaire’s team, beating a team owned by the rulers son of Abu Dabi. The Russians team managed by a hairy Tutonic manager and the crown prince’s team owned by a baldy Spaniard. Question – does men’s hair have anything relevant to do with winning the C.L.? The world we inhabit is owned by the few and this has filtered down into sport of all kinds including football. Could the Celtic board not have completed the manager selection in a quicker more selective professional way? Last time it was reported to be in the Hampden changing room, this time it was “phone a friend”. Due process, a professional selection carried out by millions of companies, but the Celtic board’s selection stinks of nepotism and an amateurish selection process. An accountant’s method of selecting managers and players.

Never give up on the hopium and say hello, hello to your fellow cassock wearers. Pax.

My favourite goal from the Rodgers period is the winner in the 1-2 comeback game at Ibrox in which Armstrong just ambled from halfway to the zombie box to receive the pass from Roberts and provide the cross…
Martin Peters was nicknamed “The Ghost” – Armstrong has the same ability to move imperceptibly. The slow-mo of that goal is fantastic. He’s been doing much the same at Southampton but his teammates have trouble “reading” his movements. He’s definitely a big loss to Celtic.

I’m not too downhearted by this. Howe was out a job, hankering for an EPL one, close to the imminent baby arrival and his beloved south coast. We were just dumb enough to actually fall for a gentleman’s agreement. I can’t believe we were that naive; Desmond will be raging, he’s been made to look incompetent and unprofessional.
Couple of things – the talk of the Lawwell – Harkin link isn’t that important to City. We are minnows to them, they are a global brand, owned by multi-billionaires, they don’t need to do us any favours ie Mark Lawwell getting a job or Deila going to NY. Harkin’s employers judge results; he has succeeded in that so I was keener for him becoming DoF than Howe as manager. And yes, he’s a Celtic fan so of course he’s going to recommend folk to us, that happens in business all the time.

As for Il Postino – he doesn’t like being spoken down to or judged by sniggering journalists or biased media. He doesn’t take crap from people. He likes fast, attacking football. He’ll have a DoF who supports him and a new CEO who is tasked with rebuilding the image of the club.

The Howe situation is The Emperor’s New Clothes. Everyone falling for it until someone points out there’s nothing of substance covering it. Probably McKay saying come now or forever hold your peace.

It’s not going to sit well with a lot of fans understandably. But who wants a manager who would be off like a shot after 12 months if he could. We need someone committed and if Il Postino works out, great. If he doesn’t, we decide this 3 months in advance and sort a new manager

Mike

Reply to  Paul Mc

Is that not ‘dumb’ Paul, having a gentleman’s agreement with Howe? If only they had carried out the manager and his team’s recruitment in a professional manner? Holding interviews months ago, having a short list before selecting the best candidate and announcing his appointment within days or weeks. That’s what a professional company would do. Of course they the board have form for acting casually and unprofessionally, like the last managerial appointment in the Hampden changing rooms. Professional, ‘world class in everything we do’? a meaningless soundbite that means diddly squat, by our CEO. Lawwell – Harkin, you are correct that link means nothing to the City Group, it means much more to Celtic, including the nepotism, the nepotism before professionalism?

Where we differ is that the DoF Harkin, is more important to you, rather than Howe as the manager, the Director of Football is an extremely important position, but they never won anything, that was always down to the players and the manager. I still vividly remember big Jock arriving at Celtic from Hibs and the effect that that had on the support and the players, some of whom would become European Cup winners, (should have been more than one tbh.) That man fashioned by the Scottish pits moulded the players and instilled a confidence in them that reverberated around Europe, you see Paul that’s what a manager can achieve. Would Howe ever achieve that we will never know, but he did show promise and our hopes and expectations were raised in a way that II Postino never has. I wish him every success, only time will tell, but I think that he has an almighty challenge ahead of him, if he fails, then we all fail, another failure would be a really bitter pill to swallow.

Of course the Harkin and ‘Ange’ link has all the smell of Peter Lawwell running all the way through it and that was the one hope more than any other that I wanted Celtic to get rid off, a completely fresh start. When Joe McHugh produced the 5Way Agreement at the 2019th. Agm that completely destroyed the last vestige of his reputation. Res.12 being it’s predecessor. So for me Harkin is a big red flag.

If he goes, then great, that at least will be something that the 5Way has achieved. When the good bhoy’s like Auldheid are reduced to simmering anger, then you know just how bad he is. The sooner he goes the better, the least damage to the club he can cause, then one more, Bankier, he too, must go. If ‘Ange’ is the Aussie Kean with managerial nouse then great, but you cannot feel anything other than disappointment at losing out on Howe, a known talent. They allowed Scotland’s scum to escape out their burrow, they need to push them back down their hole.

I don’t believe Howe coming here was on from the very start. The rumour suited both clubs for a while but having said that, if it was indeed true, was Howe denied his own backroom staff to secure John Kennedy’s job? Pat Bonner, who must have some contact inside Celtic, is proposing a Kennedy and Strachan Snr partnership. Are they checking out whose’s going to salute that “flag”?

HMRC ‘wanted full investigation into Rangers unpaid tax’, the Times reported. ‘HMRC wanted to push Rangers straight into liquidation, to ensure a full investigation of millions of pounds of unpaid tax’. Mike Baird, an HMRC investigator told the court he was eager to see Rangers go directly into liquidation. He wanted to see consistency with respect to other clubs. Baird described that the tax non – compliance was on a level that he had never seen before from any other football club. Surely that haven of criminality should have been raised to the ground and it’s ashes spread into the Irish sea. Why we allowed our club to be shackled to that scum is one thing Celtic historians will ponder over the coming years, tut tutting and shaking their heads in disbelief, a large orange stain on our club’s history.

Do you remember the Saturday Matinees? Remember when either the reel needed changing or the film broke? Hey, it was wonderful in its own way. You got to stamp your feet and shout, even throw things.

The reel has broken at Celtic. Stamp your feet and shout. Sadly, the problem will not be fixed in a few minutes. Prepare to write off the next season……it is gone now.

Ask yourself two questions. Who do you think is to blame? What are you personally going to do about it? Support that level of bungling, or force a total refresh of the club? Whether you decide to refund this debacle or not, next season has already gone. Remember that.

Listening to this state of mind podcast. These are whinging cunts. The chic is ok you expect whinging from women but these guys make you want to top yourself. I’ve got a bit more insight into postecoglu I can tell you now he’s at least better than Gerard. If he gets the gig and backing I think he can win the league and do a run in a European competition. He’s not Rodgers but he’s way closer to Rodgers than to Delia or Lennon.

Howe used the club. Shows his character he’s an opportunist for everywhere but Bournemouth where his heart lies. I’m sure of it. He wanted an out. Why are we so upset of losing a manager like Moyes who turns a mediocre outfit to something better. I think if you’ve dabbled in the epl then everything else is less than. Rodgers used the club as a stepping stone

I don’t think many are upset at not getting Howe, it’s the fact that the dysfunctional hierarchy at the club have led us a merry dance whilst causing maximum embarrassment to the people who truly care about the club. These individuals, masquerading as ‘custodians’ are doing more damage than the Whites and Kellys ever could. Their sole objective was to have a ‘Rangers’ of any description as part of the business plan, not calling out all the underhand shenanigans, turning a blind eye to all the cheating, letting them grow whilst simultaneously weakening ‘their’ own club. Bizarre doesn’t cover it. Culpable of damaging our club, these fvckers should be rounded up and and abandoned in the most remote, uninhabitable shit hole possible.

I get all that. Should we torch the rest of their gaffs ?? What can you do ? There’s no mechanism to make them absent other than to hold back on the season tickets. And the odd protest. At least Lenny is safely tucked away in England where he can only harm the likes of Lincoln and morcambe if he’s lucky

‘If all their gaffs were torched’. Judge and jury there I see. Quite frankly I couldn’t give two fvcks for these charlatans, they need to be starved out as of now.

Ian,

i shall check it out. My doom and gloom prediction is not purely based upon Ange’s ability or lack of, it is based on timing. Somehow we have to get a new coaching team plus at least half a football team bedded in to play a crucial CL qualifier at the end of July!

i had never heard of Ange, as most will not, and yet he is mid fifties…..hardly the age of an up and coming coach. Has he any experience at all in playing European teams? Has he got a licence to coach in Europe? Has he targeted players that could come into the Celtic rebuild and easily get a work permit? Why was Howe preferred to him? Probably because he ticked all of the above boxes.

the Greek Australian may be a red herring but the current disaffection of the fanbase called out for a high profile appointment. Someone else may be the real candidate and Ange is a smokescreen, but I fear that is not the case.

One thing. Ange is way closer to Rodgers way of thinking and playing than Howe is.

Rebus it’s mainly of a sentimental story about his life. The main reason I’m bringing it to everyone’s attention is to show he’s no Delia. The only thing I don’t like is the city connection. But if he proves to be the man then that’ll be forgotten. Also strachan and Rodgers didn’t have the best European starts. There’s every chance he’s the man to get euro qualification he’s obseesed with success. And laps up criticism he uses that as motivation. Not like Delia who wasn’t the strongest personality. For me he ticks the boxes for a team needing remedial intervention

Apparently if coaching staff have a the required qualifications then the visa isn’t a problem. Wenger did japan so did Jansen. He is privy to Scottish football watching the likes of Rogic and Irvine and others. Also the city group are masters of recruitment. He will have contacts. His strengths are his due diligence and setting a competitive environment where it’s sink or swim.

My heads just completely in bits with Celtic this year, on top of FN Covid, and I’m close to throwing the towel in. Words can’t describe how I feel about Lawwell and Co on the Board and Desmond pulling the strings…..it’s just SO wrong for Celtic Football Club.
Anyway, I watched a film last night, The Three Kings, Stein, Busby and Shankly and I realised what we’d lost, Celtic FC. The Three were men of honour from coal-mining backgrounds with passion, brilliance and humility too. That’s what we’re missing, guys from hard, working-class stock with an abundance of talent, endless enthusiasm and honesty all the way through.
A brilliant trip down memory lane, sometimes with tears in my eyes and happy memories too!
That’s what’s gone wrong and I’m not sure it’s fixable but I sure hope so.

Me too Monti and it’s sickening.
I think the Board are going to see change though, change they fear.
A low number of SBs sold will make them ‘think again’!
Money (or rather the lack of it) is the ONLY way.
STARVE THEM OUT, FN SCUM, EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM.

Celtic football club has been and is being mismanaged, there’s no other way to put it.
The support need to take action ( peaceful) that demonstrates our anger & frustration at the boards ineptness.

That is something we can do, if we don’t mobilise and take action, then hell mend all of us, i feel the fight in me languishing….but that will be temporary.

I am stunned at the boards attitudes, they need to go, we are lost!
