Celtic Diary Thursday May 27: Something Good This Way Comes

The Celtic PR machine showed yesterday that maybe its time to put itself in for a service, as its clearly not working properly.

Although that may be concentrating on the vehicle and not the driver.

Fans fears, for instance, that the club was pretending to go along with the no old firm angle simply to prevent criticism or investigation were realised when the official twitter page seemed to forget that Rangers had entered liquidation and were now merely a basket of assets playing out of a cheaply bought stadium.

Celtic Football Club
@CelticFC
We spoke to Harry Hood in 2013 about being the last #CelticFC player to score a hat-trick in the Glasgow derby  The record lasted over 43 years until M Dembeles perfect hatrick in 2016
Carefully avoiding the actual phrase “old firm “, the tweet referred to the Glasgow Derby, the “official ” title of the game between Celtic and “rangers “, a club that Harry hood never faced, instead of the Old Firm, which was Celtic and Rangers, the latter a club Moussa Dembele never faced.
Still, at least there was an announcement about season book renewal, though again they probably wished there wasn’t.
After telling the Celtic Trust there had already been added value to last seasons books, the board decided they would get the message about next seasons out of the way….

We are pleased to confirm that the renewal window for 2021/22 Season Tickets is now open with all prices frozen.

  • Standard Season Ticket prices are frozen for the 2021/22 season.
  • For the 13th year Under 13 Season Tickets remain at £50.
  • A range of exciting additional benefits for the coming season.
  • Season Ticket holders have until 5pm on Friday, June 25 to renew.

As we look ahead to the coming season our commitment to you is that your investment in the Club will continue to be used to invest in the squad and to build a team which can achieve success both at home and in Europe.

We intend to finalise the appointment of the next Celtic Manager shortly and we are also encouraged by the recent announcement of crowds at sporting events across Scotland this summer including at Hampden, Murrayfield and on Glasgow Green.

Celtic has been at the forefront of the effort to get our supporters back with us and now as we return to normality we are preparing to welcome you home to Celtic Park.

Our Club was born in adversity, raised in defiance and defined by no other. With our own standards and own values – we always have been and always will be a Club open to all. Now we have a real chance to start afresh, to work together and once again create a Club built for the future, a Club built to last.

Thank you for your fantastic support. It is greatly appreciated and we will do all we can to bring back success.

The deadline to renew is Friday, June 25.

The quickest and easiest way to renew is online now, and better yet, you’ll automatically be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win your seat completely free of charge for the season!

Thats some competition by the way. Win a seat you probably won’t get to sit in.

One of the benefits is a voucher for the club shop, which is valid online or in person until the 31st of September.

I read somewhere that around sixty per cent of gift cards remain unused, and given our own boards considerable canniness where the green pound is concerned, I’ll wager that even the cheapest item available will be £51.

However, amidst all this cynicism there came forth an idea from the Etims twitter, @etims.net , and its a very good one….

Electronic Tims
@ETimsNet
Heres an idea… see those £50 Vouchers… could

use them to help kids out with scarves and memories of a big day at Celtic Park for the weans?

The question was put to John Paul Taylor, who said:

Celtic FC SLO
@CelticFCSLO
Yes, you can
At this stage , details are sketchy as to how that can be done, but we’ll try to find out, as it is indeed a splendid idea, and yet again demonstrates that the support can be united when they want to be, just not with the board, who have a rather different outlook on giving anything away.
Things they haven’t given much away on include the name of our next manager, although its fairly obviously Eddie Howe and his pals.
It seems they are all under contract until May 31, and if they joined Celtic before that the club would have to pay for them.
And we know where the board stands on spending money they think they don’t have to.
The Boy Behind The Couch | Raised By Turtles
Which,co-incidentally,  if they don’t get their collective fingers out, is where we’ll be watching the games from.
As far as we have heard, this is the line up….
Eddie Howe, Simon Weatherstone, Stephen Purcell, Peter Grant. Richard Hughes as his Chief Scout, along with Mark Burchill his main UK contact. Sports Science team inbound also to work with Tim Williamson. Fergal Harkins DOF.
There’s no mention of Jonny King, the Bournemouth physio who left the club yesterday, which prompted a newspaper report or two saying he’d told a pal that he definitely wasn’t coming to Celtic.
Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t, but a new manager who knows how to improve players and won;t stand for any shite sounds good, as does a sports science team to work on fitness and injury recovery.
And Peter Grant, who can point at things.

By the way, Ashley v “rangers ” was in the courtroom yesterday. Anyone know what happened, or has that been airbrushed out of history ?
And before I forget, congratulations to Villareal, who won the Europa League last night after an enthralling penalty shoot out. Say what you want about penalties to settle major honours, but its pure drama.
And football is all about entertainment.
And credit to David De Gea of Manchester united, twelve  penalties he was involved in, eleven ended up in the back of the net, but his determination meant he ensured the twelfth went nowhere near.

Update:

From SFM:
https://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2021/790.html
The SDIR v TRFC case was an appeal by SDIR to confirm that TRFC could not profit from the Elite/Hummel deal. TRFC had interpreted an earlier injunction differently from SDIR and sought to sue Elite for monies due.
The three judges concluded, by a majority decision, to accept the SDIR appeal and their interpretation of the earlier injunction.

Martin O’ Neill cane on the 1st of June, not a bad act to follow. Howe will assemble a good support team, at his level reputation is everything if he is to have a future in the game. He got away with Burnley but he will need to succeed at Celtic. He will need backing from the board, all staff and above all the support. If he gets that we can think positively. The media are convinced the new club is on a roll, I would love it if their best days were behind them!

Villareal’s success is a poke in the eye for any Super League concept. A small club from a city of 50-60,000 and a ground capacity of 23500 swept aside a “super” club through superior coaching.

interestingly, VR did this by not employing a coach for more than one year all the way back to Marcelino in 2016. Since 2016 they have had 5 coaches! League positions obtained floated around 5, 6, 7th…..not bad for a small club.

more interestingly, Emery was appointed THREE days after the previous coach left!

VR showing us how it should be done.

Once, in our distant past, Celtic FC were the New-Co, a New-Co of Irish clubs. Hibernian- Dundee Harp- then Dundee Hibernian. Club’s gloriously named like, Shamrock – Emmett – Harp – Erin – Emerald – Columba i think was Brother Walfrid’s first go, at naming a football club, before he named the club that became world famous (if I miss any pray-tell). There once was a bridge across the Irish Sea, it was built with empathy, compassion, tolerance, values and of course faith. We know our history and recognise that Brother Walfrid’s message spread world wide, with over 200 Celtic Supporters clubs and millions of Celtic supporters. We must remember too that not every Celtic supporter is a member of CSA – AICSA – Green Brigade The CT, or ones that post on a Celtic blog.
Celtic supporters have many firm opinions, varied and strongly held. The one thing that binds us all together, is that Celtic is in our DNA, you cannot just shrug that aside, or dismiss it, for to do so would be a denial of yourself.
Excellent thought and idea regarding The Kano Foundation BTW. or to give it its proper name…
The Kan-do Foundation. There it is again you see.. Empathy – Compassion – Values.

You echo all of my thoughts but without the Irish background. My dilemma is that a) I understand that the club has to evolve as the environment changes, but b) do I like what it has become?

many fans have a nostalgic view of the club, based on “charity” values but, if you read the history, much of that vanished within 5 years of the establishment of the club…..when business saw the value of crowds of 5000 at a game.

the present board, IMHO, is incompetent and is not a basis for judging the values of the club. Would a more competent board still espouse the original values of the club? Who knows?

Yes, Celtic plc. is a sad reflection of modern day football clubs, money orientated. The pretence is to ‘keep the club safe’, while paying out to those that manage the club, badly.

The football part of the club is run in an amateur fashion, as you say by incompetents. And yes, the money factor soon took priority over everything else, but Brother Walfrid also recognised at that time, that it had to be so, to keep the club safe, his motive though was very different, his was for feeding the poor with their penny dinners.

The ‘Bunnett’ IMO got it right, he too though was critisised for taking so much out of the club, however, we knew that he cared for the club and it’s support and did much to set up the “Foundation” and to speak up for it. Boards are like football managers, they come and go, the sooner that the currant one goes, the better. The support IMO is the club, it’s them that are the real custodians and they certainly deserve much better than the ones they have got. Time for another ‘bunnett’ or sombrero perhaps?

I disagree. Yes, Fergus made money out of Celtic but he risked his entire fortune to bail out Celtic when other, richer individuals (including DD) didn’t bother. If the Celtic support didn’t step up to buy shares, he would have lost the lot and we would have lost our club. He deserves more credit than being bracketed with Desmond

New 60,000 stadium. 53,000 new season ticket holders.
5,300 new, small Celtic shareholders (me and two sons included) and tried to leave the majority shareholding to the support, I think he did at the time. DD – ?
Created – Bhoy’s Against Bigotry. Set up the Celtic Charity Fund and donated £1.5million. DD -? He, John Keane and others saved the club from bankruptcy, risking all his fortune.
All this despite being in competition with the SFA- SPL and the serial cheats from Govan. No different from Dermot?

McCann wouldn’t have wanted Sevco to be out the top flight, he would have voted for them to be in the top flight.

Mike

Why did he then sell the 5000 Rangers shares, the shares that were in the boardroom safe? You do know that this was 1995, not 2012. There was no Sevco then and no-one knew then that Rangers would go on to rack up the crippling EBT debt, that came years later. McCann was the treasurer for the Croy CSA, he was never faced with the question of what he would have done if they had gone bust, that’s just pure speculation.

How much was a ‘relatively small Bank Debt’ ? You know that the club had a £7.00 million bank debt don’t you, a fortune then? you know that it was 24 hours from insolvency don’t you? John Kean went into the Bank of Ireland and deposited £1.00 million, to keep the light’s on. If it wasn’t for Kean and McCann the club would have died.

Mike

The support never oversubscribed any share issue, in fact only 5,300 shareholders took up his offer. He said at the time that he was suprised how few supporters took up the offer.

He never made £40.00 million in 5years. He sold his shares which were underwritten by big Institutions for £40.00 million, but he invested £9.00 million, worked without pay for 5 years, never took a penny out of the club, then gave the football academy £1.5 million. That’s £29.5 million, less any salary. He had a 51% shareholding offered first to existing shareholders, one new share for every three they had. Took turnover up by 385 % Profit from £283K to £6.7million.

Who was McCann expected to leave his money to? I have never ever known anyone to sell a business without pocketing the takings. £40 million in 1999 is equal to £70 million today so I find your figures hard to believe. People justify the high wages of footballers by stating that they have their familiies to look after, so why isnt this the case for McCann, a person, by rhe way, that I wasnt particularly enamoured (or enamelled, as Charlie Nick would say) by.

If I sold my house tomorrow I would hardly be leaving the money I got for it in a drawer for the new owner to spend.

Yesterday I mentioned that Villareal were able to appoint a top toer manager three days after the previous coach left. What is the problem at Celtic?

Here are my thoughts….flawed or otherwise.

Firstly, it might not be Eddie Howe and the mystery candidate is only free at the end of his season. I think this is unlikely but possible. If it is accurate then the mystery man needs to be high profile to overcome the shock of not betting Howe.

More likely, it is Howe and he wants Richard Hughes to come as well. Howe probably has a covenant in his B’mouth contract prohibiting him from luring players and staff away from his former club for a period of time……perhaps one year. Hence the delay in announcing Howe’s appointment because he wants to be sure that Hughes can come. Further, promises may have been made to Fergal Harkin that he will be the DOF. Now we have a conflict of who does what between Hughes and Harkin. Negotiating acceptable divisions of responsibility will take time especially if both are under contracts elsewhere.

The DOF should be independent of the manager but Howe wants his man to head up scouting, yet Harkin would expect to be in charge of recruitment. A difficult dilemma and one that may scupper Howe’s appointment. Hope there is a Plan B.

Thoughts de jour. back to my Kit Kat. For goodness sake Tunnock get some caramel wavers over to Canada!

So the curse of Lawwell continues, did he try to bring in Eddie’s back-up on the cheap or try to con him into working with his yes-men? Is this another 30 millions plus flushed as we lack preparation for the Euro Champs and the sevconians wet themselves laughing? Is Lawwell going to continue to cower behind his puppets and looking elsewhere from the Keano’s who would sell out Celtic Park at a shot and bring that fighting edge and self-respect back to the club? How much did his burnt-out garage sway Eddie? Where do we go from here? Are we folding like a pack of cards or is there a chance we might just come back fighting? Exactly my thoughts CS. At best it’s a half cooked idea. Youngsters won’t be attracted to Celtic by the chance of playing in a Colts league, they want to see a route to the first team. Is that in place yet? No.

Iljas baker

If the Australian guy is the new manager it has the making of another Ronnie Deila venture ending in tears. The guy has not won much and has no European experience. If he’s willing to keep Strachan and Kennedy then for sure he is the cheap option. No offense to these guys but they just don’t have the Curriculum Vitae to be offered Celtic jobs or have Celtic really lost any sense of ambition? Which top players would these lot attract? I saw the clip of him talking about possession football and the downside of high pressing football. Some supporters are convinced he knows a thing or two. Simon Donnelly interviewed Barry Ferguson a couple of months ago and Barry was saying something similar! Anyone can talk a good game these days but can they manage a successful team in an increasingly competitive environment.? BTW is everyone so easily convinced that EH dropped the baton at the last hurdle because one of his team wouldn’t come to Glasgow? If that is the case I feel we dodged a bullet there. Three months negotiating and they’re telling us EH didn’t know the minds of his backroom staff until the last minute. Truly incompetent from Celtic. If EH expressed these kind of conditions way back then Celtic should have moved on at once. EH was in my opinion never going to be the guy to turn things around – his achievements are not that great and he has no European experience. Not sure why we were fixated on him.

The only suprising thing about this latest shambolic comedy, is that we are suprised. You wonder if it’s Lawwell’s last (V) two fingered salute departing shot, after being caught in possession of the 5Way Agreement. it’s not as if it hasn’t been done to the support before. This latest soap opera has been over a year in the making, it only add’s to the Covid depression. Resolution 12 and their treatment of the Resolutioners, the Delia appointment, the appointment of Lennon in the showers, they really are a bunch of serial incompetents. It’s no wonder that the support is going off it’s chuff. Their next managerial appointment fills me with dread, but the one thing you know, it’s that he will always be ‘not the preffered option’. If it’s the Aussie- Greek, then prepare for another Greek tragedy, you just know that it’s coming. Fuch – Hall, give them Fuch – Hall, a starvation diet…
