Celtic Diary Thursday March 17: Have We Underestimated Ronny ?

Poor Joseph of Arimethea.

According to all four gospels, this guy actually gave up his own tomb for the body of Jesus after his crucifixion, which must have put him fairly near the top of the list to have a day dedicated to his memory, and when he finally got one, he shares it with a chap who chased a few snakes into the sea off a cold and wet lump of rock in the Atlantic Ocean.

And guess who gets all the publicity.

Joseph must have used the same PR firm that Celtic have hired.

The media have found someone who supports Ronny deila, and not only that , they’ve given him some column inches, in the interests of balance and fairness, of course.

FORMER Hoops frontman Darren Jackson has slammed the “disrespect” being shown to Deila as he attempts to guide Celtic to a league and Scottish Cup double.

“I think everyone is being totally disrespectful to Ronny. He’s in a job, he’s top of the league and Celtic could still win the Cup.

“Yes, he’s had a couple of bad results, he will admit that himself, but you can’t do any more in the league.

“A team is closer to Celtic than people imagined they would be but should Aberdeen not get credit for that? Do we not praise Hearts?

“There are going to be games you lose or draw that you should win. But I’ve been in a job when other people were being linked with it and that’s not nice.

“Of course it would be a dream job for someone like Malky but I don’t think he’s coming out and saying, ‘I want Ronny’s job’.

“I have a lot of respect for Ronny. The European results were disappointing and put him under a bit of pressure but I wouldn’t like to say he should be out of a job when he’s top of the league and in a semi-final.

“The European scene was a big disappointment and I think that put him under a lot of pressure.

“That is the big thing because Celtic fans love European nights.

“They haven’t had the Old Firm derbies either, although we have one in April, but the European nights are amazing.

“If he wins the Double, can you turn around and say it isn’t good enough?”

The last line is a good point.

Suppose, for instance, that Davie moyes gets the job at Celtic. Once i’ve stopped crying, would it be fair of me to demand a treble as the only sign he has improved things ?

Or would Champions league qualification be the only thing that mattered ? Which, bearing in mind the progress made by Aberdeen and Hearts, could actually lead to the club not taking the sixth title-assuming , of course we get number five ?

But hey-at least we’d have got some money in the bank.

I caught a wee bit of the Bayern -Juventus game last night, which showed that Celtic still have a wee bit to go to be able to compete at this level, and oddly enough, the realisation that we may not quite be there yet made me think that although one could argue that this season was a disaster in Europe, there is scope to see if ronny and the jonnies have learned something.

Maybe the players lethargy was a direct result of the feeling that they had let everyone down by not qualifying last year.

Maybe I’m talking shite, and it would n’t be the first time, but fuck it.

Lets stick with what we’ve got, and see where we can take it.

Let’s give the manager and the players the vote of confidence that will help them to succeed both short and long term.

The alternative is to start all over without actually seeing if the lessons handed out last year can be dealt with next year.

The main one being that Celtic do not have a divine right to be at the tip table, and that a tremendous amount of effort and hard work will be required.

Genuinely, i thought we did well away from hiome, a previous problem, but couldn’t back it up at Fortress Parkhead, which seemed to be suffering from a few interior problems.

Anyhoo, I’d rather put former rookie boss of the year Ally Mccoist in charge than Davie Moyes or some of the other candidates on offer.

Incidentally, Moyes is not exactly in demand , is he ?

Anyway, McCoist has put down his hoe and has offered advice to the beleagured Ronny Deila, of whom it has to be said, is dealing with all the speculation around his job rather well, and if this is to be part of his learning curve and he comes through it, we could very well have an entirely different boss next year without changing the nameplate on the door.

McCoist offered his sympathy to Deila, without a hint of irony

“The current manager at Celtic is a man that I have a great deal of sympathy for.

“No matter what he does, it is probably not going to be enough.

but the cheeky funster hasn’t lost his touch-he pointed out the troubles he had at the last but one club he managed;

“Our own club went into administration and then liquidation. You get players turning up and they don’t know if they are going to be getting paid.

Thats possibly because no-one explained to them what liquidation really meant.

“There are restrictions on you all over the place. It is an extremely difficult job.”

Not that bad. just get yourself a big salary and tell everyone else nothing happened.

Mccoists re-emergence has hardened my resolve in defence of our own manager, as you may have noticed.

Look how bad he did, and compare the media attention he got when all around realised how clueless he was.

Yet Deila, despite his apparent faults, has won two out of four  major trophies , with two still very much to play for.

He doesn’t deserve the shit he gets, and in fact deserves praise for dealing woith it without actually punching anyone.

For those of you who like to fund the lifestyles of bookmakers, this week is the biggest fo the racing calendar, a time when turf accountants can ring their own accountants and ask if there’s enoguh in the pot to build that second home.

For a few Celtic players, it was an opportunity to get a day out away from the pressure of the title race, in the modern surroundings of the lush fields of Englandshire, to watch the powerful grace of elegant equines..

The players certainly looked the part;

Though Griffiths clearly hasn’t grasped the idea that jeans and a jacket is only acceptable if you are in 1983, but i guess when they told him the dress code they explained it to him by telling him to wear what he would in court.

And fair play to whoever took the photo and aimed the hair dryer at the same time.

This Cheltenham thing, I can’t see the attraction myself.

and to be fair, it looks bloody cold.

Ah. bollocks. got to go.

The new settee’s here.

The speculation surrounding Ronny Deila is nothing short of ridiculous in my opinion.
When we get to the stage of hounding Celtic Managers out of a job when the team sits top of the table with 8/9 games left to play and we are on the verge of reaching another Cup final is pathetic to say the least.
Whoever and whenever this event may take place should be of no significance at this stage of the season and to twist now would send a very confusing message out to any future Manager.
Those who continue to feed that particular fire need to be having a wee wood with themselves because this is a very dangerous road to go down for a Club and fans who claim to be a Club like no other?
When Deila was signed I said to myself it could well take 2-3 years for his plans to come to fruition?
I still maintain that to be the case however if Lawwell and co continue to punt the family silver every 12 months to balance the books then this may well never be the case.
But therein lies the real problem a problem that will exists no matter who is in control of the first team.
If he delivers another double he should get another crack at Europe of he fails at that then of course time for change in January.
That to me is the sensible approach and one I would expect from a Club like no other.

charlie saiz… there is no evidence what so ever that he should be granted another shot at europe… he quite clearly does not learn from his mistakes so why should he be trusted? to fail to win a game in the europa league is nothing short of a disaster… if we where being beaten having played the best we can or even shown any sort of passion or motivation we can have no complaints, but it truly was behind the sofa stuff

win the double and then move on to pastures new…

I presume the same rules apply to players who are repeatedly injured and of whom their only consistency is their lack of it?

These players should have the same nebulous targets placed upon them and at the first stumbling block should be subjected to ill-informed abuse and forced out the club by these selfsame ill-informed idiots.

bgbhoy

referring to james forrest again plum who has not been injured since january 2015 are we?? who has been pulled out of the side after the club withdrew his contract offer?

do you have the same harsh words for the ‘greatest supporters in the world’ who booed him onto the park?

not like this season has been ronnys first stumbling block is it? europe since he arrived has been a disaster…

im behind him until the end of season and as a paying customer i would like a new manager… given your disdain for scottish football and the fact you quite clearly dont go and have no intentions of going i dont understand why you comment

We lost 4 out of the 12 games played in Europe this season.
Too many draws emanating from a defence that was in shambles.
Believe it or not it is difficult enough to navigate through qualifiers that early in a Season with a full strength squad let alone one that has lost it’s central defence and has several key men either injured or under performing at the same time.
If he has the chance to go into them with a settled back 4 and with his key men fit and at it then I say judge him then.
If he fails to deliver then so be it.
If he delivers a double meanwhile on the back of the one he delivered last season then It is my opinion he at least deserves the chance to do so.
It took Ferguson 4 years to deliver at Man United they had fans calling for his head too after delivering nothing.
Look what happened there and imagine what might have been had they twisted?
Whist I am not suggesting he is the next Ferguson by any stretch of the imagination he is at least putting silverware in the Cabinet.
I comment because I care about Celtic.

The precedent will be set by the Ronnie out brigade Charlie. If RD wins the League and cup and is sacked then the next man in will red to win both or a treble and qualify for CL last 16 or he has to go at the end of next season. No more time for managers to. settle in or make forward plans. CL or out every year ? Managerial revolving door at CP.☘☘☘

Totally agree Delia is being judged by means no other manager in our history has. It is a constant stream of failed managers being trotted out to stake a claim for the hot seat. The MSM in this country can’t say a good word about Celtic. Its obvious from day 1 they want to put as much pressure on Delia and leave the warbmeister to spout about everything that’s wrong with Scottish football. If it’s that bad why is he here? I am old school Ronnie is our manager and until he is not I support him. WIN LOOSE OR DRAW.Caption love is in the air.

Happy St Paddies one and all.

Ronny is a good man – He is also not good enough to be Celtic manager.

Btw Ralph your constant bad mouthing of Moyes and backing of Deila is laughable. Moyes would tell Lawwell to GTF and put the fear of God into any underperforming players…unlike Deila.

You’d see passion in abundance and a manager who knows how to organise a team and get 100% from his Celtic team every week.

I hope Ronny wins the double and he’ll leave with my best wishes. Deila being in charge of another attempt at Europe is a horrendous thought.

Hibbert, Leon Osman, Rooney, Rodwell, Vaughan and Anichebe all became first-team regulars under Moyes and Ross Barkley was given his debut. Moyes also worked with a really small budget for years to bring in Cahill, Coleman, John Stones, Pienaar, Jagielka etc.

What quality players have Celtic brought through the youth academy in the same period? McGeady? Maloney?

His overall outgoings almost balanced over 11 years. An incredible feat considering the budgets he was up against and how high his teams consistently finished in one of the top 2 leagues (during his tenure) in Europe.

We need a manager with passion in his belly who will get us fighting for everything and totally ‘gets’ Celtic….not some project coach nodding his head in agreement at every player he’s told he’s getting.

I don’t disagree that Moyes could extract more effort and passion from our current crop of players, but I’m not convinced by the style of football he elects to play, nor his appetite to blood young players. I fear if he was appointed, a big bang budget recruiting experienced players would happen and those players would be relied upon for the majority of the season, hampering any avenues for development for our current untested and still unknown academy players.
I like Moyes as a man and he always seemed forthright and honest when interviewed. If he comes I’ll welcome him and wish him all the best (like I will for every new Celtic employee) but I will have nagging doubts.
Not that I know of a name of someone for whom there’d be no nagging doubts, but thankfully recruitment at Celtic is not my job.

“He’s calm around the place. He doesn’t let things affect him. He doesn’t shirk from the fact, if we’re not playing well, he sticks to his guns because he knows it will work. Performances during the season haven’t been great but sometimes that happens and you’ve got to grinds it out.
On Saturday we were a lot, lot better. Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come. Even though we’re not playing as well as we should we’re still picking up three points. At the end of the day that’s the most important thing, not the performances or beating teams 5-0 or 6-0. If you can grind out 2-1 victories, that’s what champions are made of.”

We can’t sack a guy who could end up winning 4 out of 6 domestic trophies but the standard of our play has been abysmal for large periods of his tenure and it’s a sad indicator of the standard of Scottish football that we’re still going for a second title under him despite how bad we’ve been.

And no one is saying we should be winning the Champs League, or even doing that well one we’re in the group stages, but there’s no way the teams that have beaten us in Europe under Ronny have been that good. He’s shown nothing to suggest he’s learning or is capable of making the step up to the standard needed to even get through the Europe League group stages.

Either he has to improve our performances or we need to suffer a couple of bad defeats to get rid of him. Until either happens there’s not much to get excited about. I don’t think I would even have the brass neck to celebrate if we won the league. It will only prove we’ve been the best of a bad bunch.

God help us if the other mob come up and hit the ground running.

Fuzzy, yes we can sack him for all the reasons you illustrate,
To qualify into the group stages alone will earn the club circa 15mil. that alone would do me,to help invest in the squad and to raise the clubs profile. We did it before and we can do it again with a good Manager and a small investment with the right players. We will probably raise some funds by selling some of our large squad of players.

You seem to be under the illusion that second rate SPFL Players are somehow better second rate players than the ones who play for the like of Molmo Molde or Maribor.
The fact is they aren’t they are just paid more because of where we play, who we play next to and who we are.
Second rate is the market we shop in unfortunately and when second rate are not at their best they become hopelessly inadequate in Europe.
Deilas problem is we over achieved recently in one Season under Lennon.
One Season in the past 5 does make the bench mark it’s a one off.
The writing was on the wall in 2013-14 we sold the family silver. The players Celtic brought in are not European level yet they are potential with a view to making them European Level to sell on.
This is why Lennon and Johan chucked it because Lawwell and co would not speculate more and replace the outgoing quality with incoming quality.
The result is we now have a team with ageing quality and young inexperienced replacements.
The injuries and loss of key men this Season have fucked any plans
That Deila had of kicking on.
We are now at a level of Europa League also rans.
That’s not Deilas fault but it is his problem.

Yeah a good day to be Irish. booing Forrest was like booing Fergus (What did he or Jock stein or Henrik ever do for Celtic?) We don’t boo our own but if the team’s performance is very poor then after, I stress after the game,I can appreciate some might be so frustrated they cannot restrain themselves.Personally I could never boo a green and white hooped shirt, even if Ally McCoist was in it, (now there’s a thought, steady on,I know it#s St.Patrick’s Day but you can take things too far.)
Ralph the diary is spot on today, behind the team whatever, yes whatever, the results until the end of the season.Just a bit of maturity will do it guys and then after all trophies are played for we can plan for next year, do it now and the eye will be off the ball.

“Mccoists re-emergence has hardened my resolve in defence of our own manager, as you may have noticed.”
Ralph why?
In what way does McCoist’s opinion matter, if he told you not to junp of a building would you just to spite him? No of course not so why react to his views on Ronnie?
If it is your genuine opinion that Ronnie deserves another try then just say so, you are entitled to have an opinion we ALL are but please don’t just dig your heels in to defy McCoist, something about noses and faces springs to mind.

i think Ronny has a 50/50 chance of keeping his job but there are 2 musts obviously …..win the league and beat the huns…..even then i think it depends on the manner of how we win…..if we play badly and drop points but just manage to win the league and we only narrowly beat the huns after playing badly against them then he will be out of the job…….what he has to do is storm the rest of our league games and well beat Aberdeen and totally destroy the huns and then win the double….do that and i think he will still be here next season…..and do that he has to and us fans might start to believe again

An Ode to Dundee! ( fields of Athenry)

By a lonely chemist wall, I heard a young junkie calling, when can I get my methadone,
Against the backdrop of the Discovery, I had my fix intravenously,
Now I’m flying all the way to Fintry….

Low lie the fields of Fintry, where once the drugs were handed out for free,
Against the law and acceptance, they Rob the tele for the 50 pence,
Now the ice cream van is selling crystal meth,

If you’re going to Dundee, take a trip into Fintry, because you’ll a get a hit intravenously.

By a lonely Boots the chemist, the junkies head to town to get their methadone,
They never are alone being watched by a Polis Drone, now the hatch is open it’s time for their methadone…

If your going to Dundee, take a trip to Fintry, because you must try a Peh or go to the Ferry….

for i am off to Bonny Dundee,
where the folks are filled with glee,
Lonely are the Fields of Fintree.
Low lye the fields of Fintree,
where he turns into she and shes in love with me,
lonely are the fields of Fintree.
Happy St Paddys,ya wee daftie.

I have not met the man but in some of the interviews he has given he appears to have a very engaging manner…..the type you would like to have a drink with and talk football. I refer to our manager, Ronnie. But there are two ronnies….what a discovery! There is the ronnie above….nice guy that you want to succeed, and there is the second ronnie that I call RD. He is the one that is responsible for results AND performance on the park. They are separate, just as Griff’s off field activities are distinct from the personality on the park. You like one, you have reservations about the other.

Decades ago I had a job as a labourer on a building site(Vinnie you know the high rise flats at archerhill and knightswood road?). The workforce was organised into teams. Each week each team got a bonus, or not, depending on what they had achieved. I was the weakest member of my team. The gaffer, a right arsehole, put me on the task of pulling a caste iron bucket full of hot tar up to the tilers on the various floors of the building. Of course, as the tilers progressed up the building, it became harder to get the heavy bucket up to them. I’d say I was of average/below average strength at that stage. My productivity fell and I was aware that the rest of my team were staring hard at me. After I ended up in hospital with rope burns, the rest of the team took action. They told the gaffer that I needed to be spelled on the rope. I’d do two lifts and then two other guys would do two, and so we would go. The other two were not He-men either, just average guys. Our productivity rose, we got our bonus at week’s end. All was well.

What has this to do with RD? Maybe nothing, but maybe it summarises his major flaw. Compared to the EPL and The CL we have average players….very average. Playing 4231 means, amongst other things, that the striking load falls on one player with occasional support from one or two mids. In relative terms all of these players are average to good compared to many European clubs. Asking them to perform a task on their own with little support is a recipe for under performance. We understand this when we say what will happen if Griff gets injured? The same argument applies to other areas of the team. Players are frequently isolated in their tasks with little support from those nearby. In defence, Tierney covers for others who get isolated. In the past, Lustig could do this, but not now.
So, in summary, after two years, injuries or not, the various units of the team should be supporting each other far better than they are….from the front to the back. In addition, using 4231 when we have average players at striker and in the front three contributes to our problems. These are the reasons that RD should be replaced.

I had a quick look at the last SPL results. Only one team played 4231. Guess who!

Good post Rebus, interestingly, one team played 4=3=3 last night in the Barca game, which one, well it was the Spanish Rankers, the other team played 4231 and got beaten. That is why i always like 4-3-3,stiffen the mid,
.
Suggestion sell the park and buy Messi,i would pay to watch him.

I agree rebus that we have average players that cannot/wll not offer support this is at the heart of a lot of or most of our problems get players in that have the ability/strength/athleticism.

There is rightly a decision to be made at the seasons end regarding the Managerial team. But there are other major issues to,including what do the support do if there is collusion proven between the club and the SFA on Res 12, also i am much annoyed about the £6 or extra 20% charge for Tic. supporters at Kilmarnock, why should we all accept this blatent unfairness.
Picture this, collusion confirmed, therefore you accept the unfairness we guessed is now confirmed. An unpopular manager retained and we are in a rigged game, will supporters retain there season tickets or give them up.I canot speak for anyone else, but i know what my decision will be.How much for a season ticket at St Johnstone?

On the James Forrest debate, here are his caseer stats at Celtic (source Wikipaedia).

Games played – 183 , goals 30, assists 27.

If you drop off 2009-10 when he first broke through to the first team he averages 30 games a season, scores 5 goals and has 5 assists.

He is 25 this year , personally I wouldn’t offer him a new contract.

Thanks for your contributions JF but it’s best for both if we part ways and ggod luck for the future.

San Miguel,
Do you not think that it’s vital we keep players who have a feeling for the club and who want to be here?
James Forrest has had his injuries but that can happen to any player.
He should remain at Celtic and play every game when he is fit for selection.
I’ve always been a fan of Forrest, game changer one difference maker on his day!

Why Ralph?
That is the most incredible argument I have ever read on this site Mc

Well said Maryhill, the club comes before anyone else, the gardener is an irrelevance,to sad to be taken seriously.
In case you werny aware Ralph will put forward arguments to stir the pot,who knows maybe its to buy pot or a pint.
But i will not believe he was serious.

Ghuys: This is an open forum and even “beeling idiots” like me have a right to express their views – ask Ralph 🙂 Taking the pish and the odd OTT rant are also part of an honourable ETims tradition – ask Ralph 🙂 However, this is usually done with at least the tip of the tongue in cheek and without losing our sense of humour, or resorting to outright slurs & insults.

Has it occurred to everyone that – on those odd occasions when we’d like our views to be taken seriously – e.g. Resolution 12 – nasty handbaggery like that above (you know who you are!) actually plays right into the hands of those who oppose everything to do with Celtic and – as has been clear on so many occasions over recent years (most recently with Regan’s comments on Res 12) gives our enemies a convenient label to hang on us ALL – “just a bunch of internet bampots & nutters” – to deflect from, and avoid dealing with even, our most genuine & clearcut complaints???

So, the next time you feel the urge to exchange insults with a fellow E-Tim, can I suggest you recite the Our Father 7 times – backwards – in Latin – or go get a life ,or go get yourself a blog , or simply go GTF.

Here endeth the sermon!

Lots of good points but some Nast arrogant stuff from some, well someone with a rather fruity name. Still he’s gone back to school it seems. As for the success of the team under aronnie, Europe was embarrassing, we are not a shoe in to win the league, sorry not good enough. The Es Hearts and Aberdeen are getting better but so. With our resources over a season there shouldn’t be an issue.

Honest Hoops,

Boston schmoston…Get yourself to Coatbridge…eighth biggest St. Patrick’s day gathering in the world where my team ‘FatherTed’s Fenian Army” once won the prestigious Father Ted Quiz. Great memories also of a huge crowd walking around the town on the main road, traffic at a standstill, banners aplenty when we stopped nine in a row. Ten miles from Paradise and once walked there and back as others have done.
It matters to us.

An Ode to Dundee Part II

By a lonely Camperdown park, I heard a young ned calling, Angus pass me my bag of LSD
I need it now ye Ken, before we head to the but n Ben
Wi’ a copy of Oor Wullie, the Broons and the Dandy…

Low lie the neds of Camperdown, where they go at the weekend with their Buckfast, tin foil, lighter and baggy of brown,
It’s plain for us to see, like their colleagues in Fintry,
They need their fix and they get it intravenously.

By a Perth prison wall, Angus and Hamish from Fintry are heading to their cell,
Because they want to sell their scag in Fintry streets,
But the locals they say neh, better off just having a PEH,
Now the streets of Fintry, all claim to be drug free, Angus and Hamish are locked up for eternity.

So if you’re going to Dundee, don’t go to Fintry, unless you want some Brown or Charlie.

Low lie the fields……
