Match Report : Lincoln Red Imps 1, Imposters 0

All the hope and all the anticipation of the new season under a new manager disappeared in gibraltar as Celtic slumped to one of the most embarrassing defeats in their history.

Over on the official website, the club have put out an appeal for around two dozen lads who have their own boots and have booked next Wednesday off, because on the evidence put before us tonight, that lollygagging bunch of tedious no hopers will not overcome Lincoln because not one of them has got the faintest idea how to win a football match when the other team won’t let you.

Celtic enjoyed all of the possession, Celtic played a neat and tidy pasing game as long as the gibraltan players weren’t anywhere near them, and shortly after half time a wicked bounce of the ball confused Efe Ambrose, and just as Craig Gordon decided to have a lie down, the ball was in the net and Celtics shoulders visibly drooped.

The blame could be laid at the black strip, which is bloody stupid, as the Welsh found out over the last month, or the pitch, which was a bit dodgy, but the Lincoln lads coped.

Or it could be blamed on the players, who as usual failed to show up when asked.

Man by man;

Gordon; Had little to do and did it badly.

Janko. Ran about a bit. sometomes with the ball

Sviatchenko: Ran about a bit after the ball.

Ambrose: Ran about a bit, usually away from the ball.

Tierney: Struggled with the pitch. And the ball.

Brown: Successfully avoided injury with a level of non participation unsurpassed in the history of Celtic captains

Biton: Espanyol tweeted a sigh of relief. surely we should just sell him for what we can get ?

Rogic. Looked out of sorts. Well, when I first noticed him he was being replaced. Managed the walk to the bench without falling over or losing possession.

Christie: Tried, but forgot to try when he had the ball.

Griffiths. Forty goal striker played out wide to accomodate Dembele

Dembele; every inch a ยฃ500,000 player . did we keep the receipt ?

Armstrong : At last. some energy, but it failed to wake the rest of them.

Forrest: Did his bit, but along with Tierney, saw less of the ball than would have suited them.

Ciftci. Looked likely to score, as he put the wind up Lincoln. Far better option up front with Griffiths, thougb as we have seen, Griff is better on his own.

The second leg is in /glasgow, Celtic will wear green and white and have the support of a big crowd. Right up until kick off.

On this showing, we won;t be in europe next Thursday. The team don;t know how to win, and the manager, well, he looked lost.

His idea of going with the regulars, for their experience, was sound on paper.

Its just that when it wasn’t working you change it, and if the same eleven who started tonight start next week, we are up the proverbial creek without the proverbial paddle.

Should have went with the Formation they all know.
Should have started with Griffiths in the central position that brought him 40 fucking goals last season.
Should have played with 2 wide men with pace to support Griffiths.
Brendan should hold his hand up he fucked up and tinkered too much trying to be clever trying something different.
Team were gash
Pitch was gash
Officials were gash
Wee team deserved their win so fair play to them
If we don’t scud this mob next week we should be nowhere near the Europa never mind CL.

I was worried when I seen the team sheet. Has Ambrose got pictures of our managers. How is this guy near a Celtic team??. That was the first concern the next was brown and bitton both have been pants for at least a year. So basically the spine of our team is useless or out of form. On top of a plastic piece pitch. This was an accident waiting to happen.

What in God’s name is Rodgers talkibg about ‘not embarrassing’. He needs to be told by someone what Celtic is all about because this has obviously been missing from all the years he spennt growing up supporting the team. That is the most shocking thing about tonight. Th guy appears clueless. To pick a team which includes Ciftci, Ambrose and Forrest (who doesn;t even want to play for Celtic). To leave Allan and Roberts out. These things would have got Deila crucified/Plus we now have to put up with the embarrassing interviews post match. The talk of attitude and character. Of course it is early and Celtic will go through but what has he been doing for the two months he has been in charge because he has not been watching videos of Celtic games or he would never have picked that team. I have never been convinced by Rodgers, seems like a complete bullshitter to me, a guy that has winged it too often. I would have been much happier with Di Matteo, especially with Clarke in tow. But hopefully I will be proved wrong. But for anyone who believes there is such a thing as the Rodgers effect tonight must be a wake-up call. Too much shite coming out of Celtic Park about how happy they all are, how impressed they all are but no action. Too many of these players should not be playing for Celtic, too many of thos ewh do not fall into this category are past it or not interested in playing for Celtic. Nir Bitton 6 million? Take it quick. Punt Scott Brown he is hopeless. He was repeatedly made to look like an idiot by part-timers. Rodgers is not going to make them any better and he will not know what to do with them. And he is not getting much money. And who is going to sign for celtic when it looks like the season will be finished before August is out. Now it will be panic stations to buy players for the second qualifier who will not be ready. Christ, have we not been here before. every time Celtic take the field the odds shorten on Newco winning the league as they are boosted by the ineptitude on show. Brendan is in for a rude awakening when he touches down in Glasgow, it will be open season on him from a delighted media. I must admit I never thought it would happen so early but he has made life so much harder on himself, especially with his insane comments after the game. Get the media people to shut him up. he should only be allowed to speak to Celtic TV as he is embarrassing.

Ralph,

Reading between the lines you enjoyed the game, right?

I’ve got a bottle of red open so it is all looking much better. I think that we shall beat the Imps over the two legs so I am not too worried. On the positive side BR should have learned a lot from the game.

Brown was not a captain tonight but who do we have who could replace him as a captain? Erik seems the best option but even he is not ideal.

Is Joe Allen a leader? I hope so because he could fill two roles…captain and creative midfielder. I have a feeling BR is going to chance the other Allan in the creative role since we are unlikely to get Joe.

McGregor, Armstrong are midfielders that play with more urgency. At least one of them needs to play.

Ciftci caused more bother than either of Griffith or Dembele amazingly. Against that type of opposition his strength told.

Lots of problems but I still have faith that BR will fix it. He is bold enough to take the correct action and we have a large squad. BR can select several different teams from it.

IN the meantime, brace yourself for Wolfsburg. Imagine what they could do to that team! Where’s that bottle?

Rebus

mike

It would be difficult to put into words how pish that was. There is only one positive, that he saw how poor that team is.Its been 2/3 years in the making,it needs to be reinforced quickly by at least 3/4 new first team regulars. It only became forward passing when Armstrong and forest came on.
One a new right back.
Two a new central defender.
Three a new midfielder.(make that two.)
Where were Roberts, Mcgregor and Lustig.Fitba is a results game and I have no doubt that we will be ready for next week, dont panic, dont panic Mr.Mannering, mair baws and less talk.

Tony Bhoy. Blind Faith my man. No one is doubting Celtic will win comfortably next week but look at the team the guy put out. If he had watched one Celtic game from last season he would never have picked that team. That is the problem. Celtic are two weeks away from a real game and he hasn’t got a clue what he is doing. Celtic are again a laughing stock across Europe and it is further evidence of how far we have sunk. But Brendan walking into Celtic park was supposed to give the whole place a lift. Players were going to be willing to bust a gut for the new manager because that is what he does he gets guys to play above themselves. He is just what we need at this low point. But against part-time players from a Rock that has only been recognised by FIFA for about three years. Yet none of them looked as if they could be bothered and Ciftci is sent on to save the day. if you are not terrified tehn you musy be daft.

If he was going to chance Scott Allan do you not think tonight would have been the perfect time to do it? Against a part-time team yet Scott Allan was not on the bench. I can see him getting punted before the start of the season. As for Joe Allen? Stop please. We have a better chance of signing Lily Allen. Although BR apears to have spent all summer phoning him up and begging him to take a 40 grand a week pay cut. He should have been at his work.

rebus67

Let’s slaughter a Hillman Imp on the park before the return game! Especially a red one.

We knew we were bad before this season. Give BR time to clear out the dross and get a couple of his own players in.

If we do not win over the two legs then vent your spleen.

He should have known what he had well before this. Does he not possess a DVD player. Did he need to see these guys in the flesh before making a decision. Who is he going to sign? He has spoken to every single player he has ever worked with and they are either not interested or too dear. Never mind he has 15 days before he plays a full time team. He will inspire those we have to greater heights. We have to accept that the money is banked and we have the Newco to look forward to. That will be enough to make us forget about playing in Europe. Although they must fancy their chances. They are already having a right old laugh. Humiliating. Again.

Why is Ambtrose alone getting the blame? there are others who are just as culpable. And the manager picked him. why is James Forrset getting a game when he already told the club to fuck off months ago. Bitton clearly doesn’t give a shit and Brown is shite. Cifcti gets on the park and he was playing in a team relegated in May, who are not interested in him. Rodgers knew all of this yet this is the team he picked. Deila did not get indulged for these mistakes. Neither should rodgers. And he should not be talking to the papers about how it is not embarrassing. That makes him look like a complete tool.

I don’t think the issue with Forrest is that he wants away. The issue is that he has already peaked. With his catalog of injuries and his injury proneness he’s never going to be a real asset to Celtic. Let him go or push him out. Along with Ambrose. Brown on the bench. Biton out – he’s too slow for the high pressing game. Griffith and Dembele will come good but the need for a creative mid-fielder who can score goals is stark staring obvious.

The thing is there is no hope for many of these players. I think Rogers must see that now. Did he really come here expecting the existing squad with one or two additions to suffice? In competitive games they cannot play the way he wants them to play and which BTW is the same as Ronnie wanted them to play. Janko isn’t really a work in progress, probably just not good enough. Brown doesn’t cut it any more, Ambrose is simply unreliable and needs to go, Forrest has already peaked – too many injuries and injury prone. He’s like McGeady. Just let him go or push him out. Can’t see Johansen thriving. We need as a minimum a right back, a centre back, and a creative midfielder who can score goals, probably also another goal scoring front man.And while we’re at it a goalie to challenge Gordon for the jersey.

Uralius

Brendan,
Take the players, split them into 2 teams and make them play 1 touch pass and move football (full field, No goal posts) once a team can string 8 passes together switch 2 losing players into the winning team and put 2 winners on the losing team. You will quickly find out who can’t pass and needs sold. Send them to the bin for remedial passing training. Now add the goals with who is left. They have 6 passes to score or the ball goes to the opposition goalkeeper. If the ball is stolen it’s 6 passes from there. Finally you can create a track for the wide players that only they are allowed in. This will help the team play 1 touch, pass and move direct football, with width. I know it sounds simple, but we did get beat by amateurs.

Uralius

Although they did say they would be treating them like Barcelona and I suppose a 1 nil defeat away from home to Barcelona would be quite acceptable

Devoy45

My oh my! Brendan, welcome to the Celtic! Without Efe, we would still have drawn 0-0. Still a disaster. We have good players but they need played in the right position. Forrest should be on the right, Griffiths on the left or middle. 40 degrees on a plastic pitch. Charlie Saiz, welcome back. Monti, you are right. Efe, you can go. Bitton, you can go. Brown, you may retire. Next week, the Red Imps will be squashed and Brendan can get back to reality. Calm down everybody. Some of you (not me) have the right to be as critical of Rodgers as you were of Deila. One day, you will have to quit blaming Deila and Lawwell. If Rodgers is a good manager, he can do it with the team in front of him and a few new players. Let’s see what he’s got: let’s not be Green Imps.

Even with the team not being 100% ready yet and playing on a plastic pitch, it is quite inconceivable that Celtic deliver such a poor performance like they did last night.
A number of these players need moved on and quickly.
I would like to see Brendan go 4-4-2 at the moment, put Griffiths through the middle with Dembele.

Quality players need added to the first team to raise the performance level of the team as a whole.

Bad performance and result last night but this can be used to kick on, I think Celtic will destroy the Imps at Paradise, get through and a few new signings will arrive next week.
A week is a long time in football, we have a fantastic manager in place, let’s get behind him and the team!

Monti, in total agreement, even about Efe! I want Rodgers to keep working at it and get us into CL. I also agree with 4-4-2 at the moment. Griffiths is not a wide man and neither is Dembele. Last night a kick in the baws but the cojones are still there…
