Celtic Diary Friday June 24: Out Of Europe Already!

Brendan Rodgers must go. He’s overseen a European exit which makes Ronny Deila look positively adept at continental success. Yeah, I’m a bit miserable this morning, so don’t expect to be spraying coffee over your monitor while you read this.

Stoke on Trent voted overwhelmingly to leave Europe, which proves that I am surrounded by idiots after all. The lad moves over to Dublin on Saturday, and I might just hide in one of his suitcases.

Referenda are simply proof that most people should not be allowed to decide on anything more important than which shoe to put on first.

But away from all that, there’s news from Celtic, and Charlie Mulgrew has signed a new deal, or at least agreed one, that will keep him at the club until his kids are old enough to look after themselves.

Does that mean the new boss has no faith in the centre backs already at the club ?

Or does he value the idea of having a Celtic man around ?

Do West Brom value the idea of having a Celtic man around ? The Birmingham Mail seems to think not, but stories are circulating they may hijack the bid.

There were also worries that after the strict regime under Deila, the players got a bit of a shock when it turned out Rodgers was a little more militaristic than first thought.

Evening Times: Brendan Rodgers addresses the squad at Lennoxtown

The boss did take time out to sing the praises of Keiran Tierney, and tipped the lad for the top;

“I saw in the first two days I was in charge that Kieran Tierney will be a top player.

“He’s a 19-year-old kid and probably before the start of last season no-one would have heard of him.

“But I can tell you that I know from my experience of working in England in the middle section and at the top end of the league, that this kid will be a top player. For sure. Absolutely 100 per cent he will be.

“Having worked with young players – and lots of them – and seen them grow and develop into top stars, there’s no question about that.

“What stood out about him? Just about everything. His attitude and he’s quicker than what I thought. I had only seen him on the telly in highlights and clips but when you see him close up, he’s a super athlete. He’s strong, quick, balanced, aggressive, has a wonderful left foot and will get better.

“Of course, he still has bits where he could improve but he defends well, he’s hard to beat, he wants to go forward, he’s a good size and he has personality.”

But then, he started to babble, in a way that was a little reminiscent of his predecessor..

“I have to say, from being in England for so long and working in the Premier League, I grew up seeing top Scottish players. I looked at Allan Johnston the other night, he would probably never remember it but I recall being at Manchester United as a young player when he was there. He was 13 and now he’s like me, old and starting to lose the hair a wee bit.

“But I was at Liverpool and down through the years they have had a wonderful tradition of Scottish players, so the talent is there.

“Socially things have changed now as well and things are different because of that. But there is no doubt the country has talent, it is just about honing it and making it work.

“You have an outstanding national team manager in Gordon Strachan, who can develop the players he has coached with Mark McGhee. These are guys who will give youngsters every chance to develop. Kieran is the perfect example of that, but I look at the other guys as well.

“Some of the young kids here in the training sessions, with the intensity and tempo, dealt with it really well.

“That was two training sessions I put on at the very top level of the game. So it is still very early and it’s not all about the talent.

“You also need to have to have the personality to succeed. That will help determine whether your talent is wasted or not.”

The draw for the first round of the new look Challenge cup,  sponsored by Irn Bru, the badly spelt hangover cure, took place yesterday.

Celtic under 20 will host Annan Athletic, which is a game that should generate a lot of interest, and the youngsters deserve support as they try to show they are ready for the next level. If it pays off, there will be dividends for club and player, so here’s to a good run in the competition.

The BBC explain how it works, although I don’t believe them.

The first round ties of the newly-revamped Challenge Cup are scheduled for 2/3 August.

The 14 winners will be joined by East Fife, Elgin City and eight clubs from last season’s League One in the next round, with Championship clubs entering at the next phase.

Crusaders and Linfield from Northern Ireland and Welsh Premier League sides Bala Town and The New Saints enter at the last 16 stage.

Rangers won the cup last season but will not be in the competition this time following their promotion to the top flight.

First round draw

East Stirlingshire v Montrose

Formatine United v Aberdeen U20

Cumbernauld Colts v Hamilton Academical U20

Motherwell U20 v Edinburgh City

Queen’s Park v Kilmarnock U20

Rangers U20 v Stirling University

According to some reports, the initial bid for Scott Sinclair, the Aston Villa forward, has been turned down, so maybe that ones on hold for now.

but here’s something to titillate –

Got talking to a football agent in Berlin, apparently Mario Balotelli is signing for unreal

We hear that the idea is to play him in a twin striker role with Ibrahimovic, but only in League Cup games, partly  until they adjust to Scotttish football, but mostly due to the fact that we’ve already got Leigh Griffiths.

Look, you’d be surprised at the pull of Celtic and its support.

Oh ho. Theres David Cameron “stepping down” …

I hope I’m still asleep. I keep seeing scary things.

Mind you, there is a chance to make money, literally, as the royal mint steps up production of the new ninety pence coin..

but, amongst all the gloom, perhaps there is a wee bit of good that come out of it.

Something that shows the electorate in England clearly haven’t thought things through.

Could this be the end of the financial muscle of the English Premiership ? No more freedom of movement, which caused a lot of jobs to be lost to foreign migrants-so they say- will certainly affect the signing policy of football clubs, which in turn will reduce the appeal of playing in England, which will reduce the money Sky will put in to the game.

You’d hope so, anyway, and if that happens, maybe it will put a smile back on my face.

After I’ve moved to a flat above a shop and got the kids work cleaning the inside of chimneys.

Yesterdays caption competition-

A tough one to judge, and probably not full of replies Commons himself might want to read, was won with this quip;

Caption….. Now the Norwegian’s gone, I must thank the surgeon for getting my thumb out ma arse.

Today, whats this all about ?

It’s Friday, and that means its time for Knob Of The Week, and its an unusually serious award -to none other than reptilian Nigel Farage, the man who failed to be elected to Parliament no less than seven times, but has managed to appeal to the lowest common denominator in his latest attempt to be in government.

Nigel Farage said ‘we won it without a bullet being fired’

What do you mean “no democracy”?

We have a monarch and an unelected upper chamber. We have laws written by civil servants and companies. We have representatives that are ‘whipped’ into voting along party lines rather than for the benefit of those they ostensibly represent. We have a country where getting 35% of all votes cast is somehow a landslide giving your party unrestricted control. We have no guaranteed rights and no limits on the government. We have a monarch whose only job is to stop the government of the day riding roughshod over her subjects’ rights but who has never refused to sign a bill into law. We have charities whose funding comes from the government who lobby the government. We have companies having the ear of politicians rather than the people. We have companies paying off former government (prime) ministers in order to encourage today’s ministers to do their bidding.

OK – fair enough, we don’t have much in the way of democracy, but this vote was by the people and went against what big business and big government wanted.

Then you agree, there is no democracy. This is what the Tories have wanted all along and the elite and king makers within Westminster have played Cameron and co like a fiddle.

Of course we should never tug our forelocks and keep shtum, the ancestors of many of us were forced to do that very thing. There is of course a democracy and democratic decisions must be respected. However is it just me that realises whatever democratic decision has just been taken that perhaps there are darker and deeper forces at work that control our lives when I watch the market and currency fluctuations this morning and remember that Trudent still sits in our back yard? Anyway whatever happens let us hope that our team will be in Europe long after Britain has been led out by the supporters of the ghost spitfires in the clouds defending us from Johnny European.

Last word on it,Europe is a busted flush, when member countries put up sky high fences and Eastern Europeans refuse to accept migrants, then the games a bogey.
Austria voted 49% for the far right.
Italy now awash with migrants from overseas will vote to leave.
France with its stupid leaders will also go,that leaves only the Herron Volk, who are world leaders and who are still asking for forgivness for the deaths of Millions and Millions of people.Apart from world domination at fitba.
How can you expect populations to accept millions of migrants without investing billions on the support that they need for housing and social care,it disny work, populations will not accept it.
Camerons, gone with Osborn to follow, every politician who asked to remain should go,bet they dinny go though.

Why Brendan your so astute K.T.is a great young player, well yes so he is,Robertson of Hull, seems wanted by the Pool £12 mill.bid to come, fuck me Peter you missed him.(another yin).
Will Brendan get his targets,i am not so sure,so should he look elsewhere, yes he should, but please dinny ask for Peters advise. The resigning of Mulgrew,if it happens, says that he is not sure about Boyata or Sumo and no wonder.
We might be going into Europe without many new players, only time will tell.

No Monti, its not just you,the trouble is,when your budget is small compared to the English Leagues and your own experience is based down there then the players that you want, you might not get them because of the competition from the English market.
Lawwell would have vast experience in the world markets,he has been dealing for years,so Brendan might start to feel pressure when he cannot achieve his targets.
However he has a huge player pool available now,but is it good enough, who knows only time will tell.
We live in hope.

My own opinion is,he is a great player plays the fulcrum position for Wales but mibbee a bit light for Scottish fitba, but then again jinky wasnt more than 10 stone, what would he be worth now?
I am sure that he will not spend his budget badly,I like the look of that Robson Kanu?Time will tell.

As for politics, wake me up when the 99% (us) decide that we’ve had enough of the 1% ‘dictating’ to us what, where and how we should live our lives. Profits before honour.

There’s going to be a big upheaval in the game in this country after the vote to leave. Some players will have to go back to their own country which will maybe give young homegrown players a chance. Scudamore in england was hoping for remain as it’s going to have a negative impact on the epl. Maybe that’s the reason there’s been nothing happening with us, it’s going to be interesting.

Gentlemen on the signing front the manager has had less than a week with his players, many possible targets are busying at the euros .If we were after geriatric has beens and never weres then I am sure we would have completed a number of deals but I am really sure that’s not where we are operating.

As long as we are still in Europe after September I don’t give a Donald. The funny thing is that all the people that voted leave think imagration is going to get better and people won’t want to come here, unfortunately it doesn’t solve the wars all around the world that make people leave their countries and try and find something better for their families. On a brighter note.
Lets get the good guys tied down on good contract, like tierney has. Next one should be rogic! One good centre half, one holding mid and another good forward to partner griffiths. Other than that I think we are cool, 5 mil on each player job done. There must be players out there for that money that will tick most of the boxes. Hail hail

There is a huge differance between an economic immigrant understably wanting a better life, opposed to a refugee who fleas there country for fear of persecution, and death.

Devoy45

Immigrants who come here, have marriages of convenience and live off the public purse. Aye, Prince Phillip comes to mind, as do all the Hanovers who changed their names to sound more ‘English’. Those of us who voted YES and REMAIN knew this was coming. How much shite do we have to eat? It will only get worse. Gibraltar gets to stay in the EU but we don’t. How about a Unilateral Declaration of Independence? Like Rhodesia. You don’t have to ask your masters for your freedom, you take it.

Brendan, How are you?have you evaluated the current crop of players, are you dismayed at the last few years of neglect?
Quality not Quantity is the answer, you are correct a new experienced Centre Back, defensive mid and a new striker would help, but you know that.Fitness will need to be addressed,Ronnys idea of fitness was to stop the red sauce on the chips, its only when players respect you that they will listen to you and they Will listen to you.
I trust that you are not downhearted, the support will back you 100%,meanwhile watch they sneaky govanite bastards, watch them as they sythe our players down, bring big yins in,yins that can take a tackle and dish it back.
So go on Brendan,we are relying on you to bring the thunder back.H.H.
