Celtic Diary Tuesday April 5: Excitement Builds..

Tonight Celts are in action again, this time in Dundee where the game in hand can hopefully be turned into a seven point lead, and whilst there’s no room for complacency, a continuation of the form showed in parts on Saturday should see us through.

It’s Scott Browns turn to talk the other side up, and I suppose it’s about time he did something.

They’re on a good run and Paul Hartley’s got them playing really well, and no matter when they play us they always seem to be up for it. They’re a good team and they always try and pass the ball so it should be a good game of football.

“The main thing for us is to get over the line and it doesn’t matter how or when that happens. We’ve been in this position for the last three or four years so we know what it’s all about, and we just need to keep putting points on the board.

“Hopefully we get a good result at Dundee and go seven points clear because it would be great for us.”

Hackles on you neck risen ?

No ? Mine neither.

After tonight there are six games left, and five in a row, something only seen once before in our lifetimes will be completed.

Something that has been accomplished is the winning of the development league title, after twenty three wins in twenty five games so far. The other two were draws, and you have to say that does augur well for the future, as it appears the youngsters at least have a winning mentality.

17 Dunfermline 28 4 2 7 19 21 3 2 10 17 33 -18 25

I’d say they were pretty dominant in that league, and whilst a number of the squad won’t proceed to the first team, the amount of players who have carved out careers elsewhere from the Celtic set up at least means they can be reasonably confident of doing so themselves.

Well done to coach Tommy McIntyre and his lads.

So, how quickly can the big team do the same ?

A win tonight means another four wins is all thats required, unless we get an early game against Aberdeen after the split. So, if we beat Dundee and Motherwell, and win the first post split game, we could win the league against the Dons if it comes out as game number two.

If they want excitement, how about scheduling that one ?

Anyhoo, back to Brown, and he decided he wanted to be booked tonight, and probably in every other game as well when he had a bit of a rant about tackling…

“In football, there is too much focus on a wee slide tackle here or there.

Like the one by Lim Bridcutt that nearly broke Sviatchenko’s leg ? When Brown told him to get up ?

“We need to man up about it. Football is a contact sport and you have to deal with some tackles – and I am not saying mine was great or a bad one.

“I haven’t looked back on it yet so I am not really sure. Some people have said it was a bad one but I haven’t had time to look at it.

“I don’t go into hurt anyone.”

He’s got a point, but his efforts these days seem to show he really has lost a yard or so, and maybe he is carrying an injury, and perhaps it would be better to let him rest for a while.

Couple of years, maybe.

Tonight lets allow Biton and Johansen to take the holding roles, with Rogic, Roberts and Mackay Steven in front of them. Save brown for the Cup, where his experience will be needed, as he’s better at winding people up than most.

The defence seems to have settle a little, so go with the four who started against Hearts, and with Griffiths up front we finally  have some sort of consistency in selection.

And it’s only April.

John Collins somehow got himself in front of a microphone as well, and gave us his thoughts on Patrick roberts before anyone got a chance to snatch it off him;

“I don’t like comparing him to the best player in the world, which in my opinion is Messi. But you can see where people get the resemblances.

“He is left-footed, he likes to take people on and if he ends up half as good as Messi then he has done well. That has got to be his target, to try to emulate what Lionel Messi does, which is score goals, create chances.

“He is one of those players who gets you on the edge of your seat. When he gets the ball the first thing in his mind is can he take on a defender. He is a type of player I like watching.

“You have to have an end product and, at the weekend, he had what we are looking for from wide players, beating players and getting shots on target and finishing off with goals. The most important thing is continual progress. He has to produce week in week out, that’s what top players do.”

By the way, can I just clear something up. Roberts did not cost Manchester City £12m.

Manchester City have completed the signing of the Fulham teenager Patrick Roberts in a further move to boost their homegrown ranks.

Roberts, who plays as a forward or winger, has moved for an undisclosed fee but the figure is understood to be £11m, with £5m up front for the 18-year-old with a further £6m in add-ons.

Well, not yet anyway.

Robbie Neilsen has done wonders at Hearts. That was a tough game at the weekend, and he deserves credit for what he’s done.

And he loves to wind up former First Division rivals Second Rangers;

By the way, the move that rocked football mentioned at the top of the page, isn’t Souness’s EBT after he left Rangers. for some reason, no-one is asking him about that.

It’s not just the Hearts boss piling the pressure on the former city trader Mark Warburton and his club.

Channel 4’s Gogglebox-where people you don’t give a toss about  about programmes you don’t give a toss about-has upset a few staunch supporters..

GOGGLEBOX newcomers the Manuel family are caught up in a bizarre censorship row over a Rangers mug.

Charles, 54, wife Donna, 48, and son Grant, 19, were filmed with a Bridgeton Loyal Supporters Club cup during their TV debut.

But Bears fans were incensed when Channel 4 bosses blurred out the logo in repeats of the reality show — claiming it breached “promotional” rules.

One outraged Gers supporter said: “It’s a disgrace.”

RANGERS fans are already at the centre of a bizarre cup clash 12 days before their semi-final showdown with Celtic.

Viewers spotted new Gogglebox family the Manuels with a ‘Bridgeton Loyal’ supporters’ mug during their debut on the reality TV show.

But Bears supporters hit the roof when Channel 4 chiefs scrubbed the footie logo from repeats of the hit show.

Outraged Jamie Stewart tweeted: “Watching on catch-up and they blurred out the Bridgeton Loyal mug. Why? What’s wrong with it?”

Karen Peat added: “Absolute disgrace”. Another irate fan wrote: “Shocking. Don’t think I’ll bother watching anymore.”

The Light Blues cup was spotted on Charles Manuel’s coffee table as his family appeared on Gogglebox on Friday.

Channel 4 said they censored it because it breached rules on promotional items appearing in the programme.

But the Glasgow-based Bridgeton Loyal Rangers Supporters’ Club blasted the decision.

After the edited repeat, they posted on Facebook: “You can tell the level of hate out there for us when a mug causes a stooshie.”

Last night they added: “It has absolutely nothing offensive on it.

“It’s a copy of our 24ft x 24ft banner which we take to games and has been checked by Rangers officials and Police Scotland.

“We are hoping it’s just Channel 4 checking complaints from obsessed (Celtic) fans and the infamous mug will be back on our member’s coffee table for the next show.”

Glasgow-born Charles appears on the show with wife Donna, 48, and son Grant, 19, at the family home in Croydon, south London.

The cup also carries the slogan ‘We’re the boys from the Toll’ — in honour of the neighbourhood.

One Hibs fan wrote on Twitter: “Questionable mug on the table from this new family.” The Manuels’ appearance was also hit by viewers complaining that they couldn’t fathom their accents.

Twitter user L Copeland wrote: “I can’t understand the new Scottish woman on Gogglebox — and I’m from Glasgow.”

Gogglebox — watched by up to three million viewers every week — features families commenting on TV shows from their sofas.

Watchdog Ofcom said it has had no complaints about the cup.

Channel 4 said: “We apologise for any offence caused by this oversight which breached protocols on promotional items appearing on the show.

“As soon as we became aware we took immediate action to ensure it was no longer visible in repeats or on All 4.”

Ministry of Defence worker Donna said last night: “I wouldn’t be able to comment.”

That report appeared in a national newspaper-oh, alright, The Sun,- and I’ve read it twice. I have to admit I’m stunned. When did that lot start to drink from cups ? How can they do that without opposable  thumbs ?

Mind you, this nonsense about not being able to understand their accents is a little unfair. They’ve only just mastered drinking from a cup. Intelligent communication is probably decades away.

Speaking of intelligent communication, Radio Clyde’s superscoreboard, another gaggle of gonks who talk amongst themselves on air, tweeted this last night, in response to criticism that they may be a little over enthusiastic towards a particular first division club…

Rangers fans account for nearly half our listenership. If they win, we want to be there for them at the fulltime whistle.

Which prompted an extremely poignant question from someone who appears to be remarkably intelligent;

Why were you not there for them when the arse was ripped out of their club?

I, I mean he, didn’t get a reply.

Derk Boerrigter has gone, and he handed his car back in yesterday…

Oh, by the way, theres a few tickets left for the Scottish cup semi final.

AFTER the initial sale of tickets to Season Ticket holders, remaining tickets have been balloted amongst those Season Ticket holders who were not offered a ticket in the initial sale and who purchased a ticket for the Greenock Morton match.

Tickets have been balloted as we do not have enough tickets to offer all STH who attended this match.

The deadline for Season Ticket holders to purchase their tickets is 5pm on Friday, April 8.

Thought i’d mention it. you might never get a chance to see the new club.
there’s a story going round that a list of recommendations have been given to the Ibrox club as it appears some repairs to the roof are needed. Urgently.
We asked an expert…

elcormaco & mike

I am fine. I simply do not have the knowledge and stamina to keep up with the many football geniuses on here this
last year or so. I tend to just read now and prefer to stay off the road when the gurus start doing their many U
turns without warning. I cross the road very slowly these days and cannot take the chance of being obliterated by
the mad rants that fly fast and furiously from the new breed of ETims wordsmiths. I have read banter on here that
would bring a blush to Old Nick if he heard it from the damned in hell. Worse still, much of it has the odour of sites
we all detest and condemn.

That leads me to my serious point – apologies to mike who loves to take the mick. This last year has been an
extremely sad one. In all my years following Celtic, I have never read so much vindictiveness from within.
Anger, criticism and even complaining, has always existed and, as a ready participant in all three, I would be worried
if it was not present. But there are ways to say things, standards that should be adhered to. I have been really
disturbed by some of the comments on here about the cub, the management and the players as well as remarks
made to and about each other. I do not take issue with the opinions put forward or the heated discussions that
followed. It is the how that bothers me. I feel many have been expressed in a manner that reflected very badly on
our support and provided more succulent anti Celtic lamb to the Scottish media than any supplied by Murray’s
butchers. I am as opinionated as any fan but I hope I would express myself with some decorum especially when
writing about my club. There are fans I would want to see permanently removed from Scottish football and there
have been times I felt some on here were dangerously close to their prototype.

Other than that, I have had a few ups and downs which have kept me off the keyboards but, hopefully, they are
behind me for this year at least. In between, I have found myself becoming more and more involved in voluntary
work – for those that have not experienced it yet, they are the 24/7 jobs you get when you “retire” just to help you
keep occupied. That last phrase is taking more piss than Rebus’ OU article. I have to say, it was an interesting read
all the same and with this current board, I would write nothing off.

I will keep it short as I know mike likes to spend his days taking in the sights of some brilliant town on the east coast.
I do not know mike, elcormaco, but I think my good news comment on Dundee gave him such a lift he felt an
immediate bonding. By the way, mike, it is quite some time since I travelled to Dundee for matches. I really did
enjoy them in days gone by. Maybe that was because it took me away from my home town for a day – a treat that
could never come quickly enough in any week. I am not sure my last visit to your lovely town could be put in the
same category. The place was being decimated then in preparation for the new frontage. By the way, I had a bit
of a hand in the building of Ninewells Hospital and I was no youngster even then :).

Thank you both for your kind words. I may start dropping a few lines again now and then just to keep everyone on
their toes.

Some strong stuff in your post. I agree there has been a lot of abuse aimed at both players and management on here. I have been responsible for some of it. I shall try to moderate some of my remarks in the future. I hope that I have not abused other bloggers.

I don’t wear my collar back to front so no need for a confession or, more importantly, my forgiveness. I know my comments may appear directed at individuals but I did not intend to direct them at anyone in particular. It is just a trend I felt was developing so I was targeting the sin and not the sinner. There have been numerous ccasions that justified the strongest criticism of every aspect of our club from the board through management and players to the near loss of our charitable ethos (and I have probably witnessed more than most on here). However, for all the trouble and strife I always felt the fans addressed the issues with a certain restraint and dignity unlike those of certain other clubs. Perhaps the problem lies with the very social media that provides access for everyone to
express opinions. Perhaps psychologically users mistake freedom of expression for an unrestrained free for all. The former I support whole heartedly but look for some personal responsibility regarding the latter. I am well aware that drink and anger can have a destructive influence and would suggest that is the very reason to stay quiet when under the influence of either or both. However, I am well aware that only someone who is without sin should cast stones and I am certainly not one of them. I only hope the tenor of the comments will be a little more subdued and remain at the enjoyable level they appear to have settled at these recent weeks.

Thanks for your reply and keep up your entertaining comments. Back to a worrying game.

As pointed out in the last few weeks the form of brown hasn’t been the best, nor has Johansen and a few others. I read on a few sites last week that in the development game Allan ran the show and either scored or set up all of the goals so I was thinking great we will see him in the next game but again he was missing on Saturday. Does anyone know what the script is here , is there a personal issue with Delia , was he forced to sign him by the board? From what I read and hear he is doing just as much as Roberts was in these games and he’s been moved to the first team. Really frustrating as I want to see this kid in the hoops, he is clearly doing enough to get in , especially with the current midfield not setting the heather on fire at the moment.

So it is 442 for tonight with Patrick keeping his place. Gutsy call, Mr Deila!

I suspect that GMS will be asked to drop back to form a 4-2-3-1 if the porridge gets too sticky.

Looking forward to seeing Stewart in the dark blues. Is he a possible replacement for Forrest and/or Derk? Last one is a joke(in more ways than one!) so don’t let the heavens fall on me.

Could be a good game since the Dundonians like to attack and they don’t kick opponents off the park. I think Gilzean will get the first goal, and Cousin the second, but we shall win 4-2. or 3-1 if Cousin does not score.

Halftime. 0-0. A disappointing game. Dundee are there for the taking but Celtic are powder puff with little creativity. We have two players who can get in behind the D defence but we have nobody to play the kind of pass that will exploit this.

Roberts is not being utilised. Part of the problem is the slow build up with Brown acting as the central fulcrum…a role in which he is not excelling. Is Allan on the bench? He is needed.
