Celtic Diary Wednesday March 23: Deila Leads Celts To New UCL

Celtic will play Leicester in Glasgow, Barcelona in Dublin, and Inter Milan at a venue to be decided in Europe in the International champions cup, a US financed get together for all the big clubs who can take their supporters with them without trashing the joint and stretching local emergency services.

There was talk that Celts would play in the New World, but one or two visa issues with one or two players who are not strangers to magistrates probably put paid to that. The Inter game is touted for Lisbon, but may yet end up in England, possibly even at Wembley stadium, which gives the board a chance to pop in at Oxford United to see how the merger is coming on… you believe that stuff about Calum O’Dowda ? Really ?

The tournament is a little, er, unique in its set up. Each club plays three games, and the one with the most points-three for a win, two for a shoot out win  and one for a shoot out defeat-wins after the three games are played.

Theres no doubt it’s quite flattering for Celtic to be involved in such a high profile competition, which is invitation only, though its worth remembering the American based sports company running it are believed to have been pointed towards the inclusion of Celtic after another Glasgow side drew enormous crowds over there a year or two ago.

Prestigious is the word , looking at the full line up of teams involved..

Ronny Deila becomes the first Celtic manager to qualify for the ICC, and you lot want to sack him…

But seriously, how did we end up in with this lot?

On the other side of the coin, t means that come the summer we’ll be excluded from glamourous events such as the Second Rangers Linfield clash, billed as the clash of the titans, two of the worlds three most succesful club.

Laugh if you want, but we could do with that sort of PR at Celtic, well, maybe not to the extreme of making us look silly, but at least it puts a positive spin on a negative story.

Peter Lawwell has every reason to be pleased with himself, having negotiated a home tie, a close to home tie and a game against Inter, possibly in Lisbon.

And then there’s the money, and the exposure.

“We are delighted to be invited to such a prestigious international tournament and to join the other great names in world football.

“Celtic is proud to enjoy its own global profile and our involvement with the biggest names in the game will only increase interest in the club on a global stage.

He even outlined plans to increase the capacity of the ground to cope, but probably should have thought it through a little more.

Maybe, just maybe someone should point out that there’s another competition, with the same big names , every bloody year, and with a little investment he might see the clubs name up there with the other giants on a more regular basis…

For Leicester City, who might well do an Atletico and win the league while the big boys players have their attention on their new cars and houses, its a fair leap into the limelight. Last season, their friendlies were against Lincoln, Mansfield and Burton, and their support will relish the games this year, against Barcelona, Celtic and Paris St. Germain.

There is concern that the tournament might interfere with the champions League qualifiers, but to my mind it will focis the players a lot quicker and get a little more enthusiasm going, and competing with top sides will help get the fitness up to speed as well.

as for the travelling, theres none involved really, and if the third game could take place in England, then whoever negotiated this for Celtic should be asked if he’s any good at scouting.

Though there is one thing, Ronny Deila hasn’t said anything about it yet-or if he has, I missed it.

Maybe he won’t be there, and the new manager will be introduced at Celtic Park on July 23.

When do the Euros finish ? For Ireland ?

In other news, Carlton Cole has turned up, looking sheepish and no doubt smelliing of the drink. we don’t know where he was, what he was doing , but his arrival, chucked out of a speeding seven seater, which failed to stop, certainly raised a few eyebrows..

He will be let go at the end of the season, but the guy who suggested  the deal will no doubt stay.

Actually, we hear he’s got his eye on another sensational signing, with top level experience, to help out the youngsters on the field…

Just because the photo is in colour, it doesn’t mean it’s recent.

Congratulations go to Erik Sviatchenko, who has been named as the Danish Superliga Player of the Year. He won that for the season just gone, as obviously he doesn’t play for them anymore. He’s at Celtic now, and has settled quite well.

Another Celtic centre half is away on international duty, and may be feeling a little more wanted  there than he does in Glasgow.

Tuesday Mar 22, 2016. 21:03

Hundreds of fans mobbed Eagles stars Mikel Obi, Ahmed Musa and Efe Ambrose after Tuesday evening training at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.

Chelsea star Mikel was also mobbed by fans when the team trained in Abuja earlier in the day.

Celtic defender Ambrose is returning to the city when he was born and where he went on to captain the city’s biggest club, Kaduna United.

The fans wanted to touch the players they often watch in action with their European clubs on television and also take pictures and selfies with them.

Maybe if we treated him  like that he  would play with a little more confidence.

Another of the Lions celebrates a birthday today,

He’s seventy eight. But for some of us, he, like his team mates,  never gets older.

I met Bertie at Lisbon airport in 2007,  and asked him what time the Lions would be at the National Stadium to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the win there, he didn’t know, but dragged me along to all the other lions to see if they did…

A player who knows what its like to be a fan.

Speaking of fans, yesterdays caption was won by bgbhoy, although I have altered the wording slightly..

today, we have a colour picture , for a change..

On a serious note, away from the football for a moment, there were further atrocities in Belguim yesterday. My thoughts and prayers go to those affected, but I’d like to add that this is the work of a terrorist group for its own means and ends. , Not a religion, not a refugee and not a nationality.

Remember, its not so long ago this was an editorial, and you only have to substitute a word or two to see the blame game being played all over again.

Morning Ralph,
Last year when we stayed at home to prepare for the CL qualifiers I thought this was the most sensible choice, however it didn’t do us much fucking good, I’m looking forward to the Leicester, Barcelona and Inter games tho, the better the opposition, the clearer we can gauge where the team is in terms of readiness for the challenges ahead.
No point in playing teams like East Kilbride and annihilating them erm, 2-0.
I pray to the Holy Papa that Deila is long gone before these fixtures have arrived, thanks for your efforts Ronny, but no thanks.
We need to bring in an experienced manager and I hope it is a return of St.Martin and Desmond finds his cheque book.
A new management team and a few big, shiny signings to join a new feel good factor around Paradise, must be a new start at Celtic next season, it’s time to go forward with a real belief and purpose from day one next season, in fact we fucking should have belief and purpose this season.
It’s about time Celtic got serious about where we are going, we need to toughen up on the park, get back to basics and find form, fuck this limping to the line shite, get the fast flowing, taking the piss heads on and remember you are Celtic players for fuck sake.
Have some fucking pride in your performance! HH

Morning Monti.
If Delia is still in charge next season its time to chuck it.
He had an open road to titles cups etc.
No Rangers Hibs Hearts ffs people stop going on about managers from the past like Brady Macari Barnes Mowbray,Imo with no rangers hearts and hibs don’t you think they would have won the titles too. Of course they would have.
Never in the history of our club has a manager had it so easy. So the media have a go so what.
Neil Lennon was attacked sent death threats bullets, etc but carried on and got the job done.
The media have always been anti Celtic nothing new in that. The buck stops at Ronnie.
Nice guy might be a great coach, but should not remain manager of our great club next season.

Jimmy what you are saying is that since Rangers died off and were liquidated because of financial mismanagement, Hearts were relegated because they went into administration and Hibs were relegated because they were unable to win many games so a poor team, that Celtic were expected to walk every game and win endless trebles in Scotland? Is that what we expect our next manager to do? The other teams are simply Celtic fodder? When we do get a new manager, I’m sure we will at the end of the season, I would like to see the same level of expectation for that new manager as we are applying to Delia. free flowing Celtic way football, 3 04 4 goal wins and a domestic treble every year right?

Reply to  Broxburnbhoy

@broxburnbhoy no m8 you completely misinterpreted my comment. You see this is what I don’t get from Celtic fans.
You say the same level of expectation given to the new manager( if there is going to be one) as given to Delia.
It is not different from what it has always been for ffs.
All Celtic managers have to win titles cups etc that’s why they get sacked when they don’t.
What I was saying is that Mowbray Macari Barnes, would all have won titles during the periods that Delia has won his.
Are you telling me that you didn’t expect Celtic to romp home?
Yes I expect Celtic to put on a show, not every game that’s impossible, but more than what has happened under Ronnie.
He’s a dud he’s got away with it because of the circumstances surrounding 3 of our main rivals who weren’t in the league.
We shall not be moved Not by the Hearts the Hibs or the Rangers we shall not be moved. Couldn’t even sing that as they weren’t competing in the same league. Got it ?

Oh Jimmy so angry, relax dude. I think I understood exactly what you meant. Hearts Hibs and old Rangers used to be or major rivals. Now its Aberdeen, Hearts and St. Johnston. New World Jimmy. Delia it seems is expected to win the treble and of course Delia won a double last year an is likely to repeat the same this year. So we have won leagues and cups under his management. That was your criteria right? This is different today as the current and future managers will all be required to win the treble easily it seems as a staring point & qualify for CL. That is fine all I am saying is lets hold the next manager to the same standard whoever he is.

Monti
Reply to  Broxburnbhoy

Broxburnbhoy,
The only person I have heard bang on about trebles is Deila, because he’s fucking clueless.
As for a manager having to win a treble? More shite I’m afraid, I have only seen Celtic do one treble under Martin, so to suggest we should be expecting trebles is nonsense.
What we should expect is winning the championship with a bit more convincing level of performance than we currently see.

Just for the record, if Celtic were winning our league every season and in the CL every season, that would do me, I care little for ‘ trebles ‘!
I want to see my club take on the best in Europe whilst winning our league, dancing about Hampden with the League cup after being humiliated in Europe means nothing to me, fuck the League cup, let the diddy’s have their day out!

The way I see it and this is the way I have ALWAYS viewed players pulling on a Celtic jersey is this…
You as a player who has been signed to play for Celtic in front of our Support and is being paid rather handsomely to do so has an OBLIGATION to turn up for EVERY GAME and GIVE YOUR BEST.
No matter how well you are playing at that moment,no matter what shite is going on in and around your life both in or outside of the Club once you take the RESPONSIBILITY of wearing that Jersey that so many have worn before and so many out there could only wish they had you MUST put in a performance, try your hardest and come of the Park knowing you have left NOTHING on it.
The shit I have read this Season regarding the players “not being up for it” or not being “Motivated” makes me wonder what the fuck some within our fanbase expect from these CHARLATANS?
I say CHARLATANS because I have seen players go out there this Season not putting the REQUIRED EFFORT in.
If any of these well paid players need a Manager to get them motivated or up to play for Celtic then I suggest he/they are at the wrong Club.
The Manage certainly isn’t because he is at the very least passionate about us and it.
These players need to step up to the plate, own their own shite and get on with PROVING that they DESERVE to be here.
If not do us all a favour and FUCK OFF.
The bhoys and ghirls who spend their hard earned cash deserve NO LESS than 100% EVERY GAME.
If they do this we will win this League comfortably and put that Scottish Cup back in it’s usual spot.

do you think the manager has given 100%?? did he give 100% when he took the team training in gran canaria for a week and instead of taking the double sessions himself he was out in playa del ingles with his new burd? does he give 100% when were goal less against dundee with 10 mins to go with 8 players on the touchline and he is hiding in the dugout?? a teams passion and fight comes directly from the manager and funnily enough it is 2 qualities that we do not posses

Charlie Saiz,
If you could bottle what Celtic means to us and transfer that into new signings, then maybe then we would see a performance that is befitting of our great and famous shirt.
The problem is,is that it is just a job to some of them, not all of them but some.
Look at the level of performance from young Kieran Tierney since he broke through, he plays with a great pride and passion and his application is always spot on, he is motivated.
We need more like him coming through but only if they are good enough, I’m not interested in playing the young players just because they are young, they need to be excelling at their level first then push for the first team.
I’m happier when a Tierney comes into the team, stays there and performs well, rather than buying a player of a similar age from abroad.
Loyalty and ability should be the end result of Lennoxtown.

Great post Monti therein lies the problem the wee man has shown most of them up in this regard.
Griffiths is the same no matter how bad a game he might be having he still puts a shift in.
That should be a basic requirement of ANY FOOTBALLER.
I would punt any of them who do not provide this level of commitment on a daily basis.
We are fortunate in a sense we have a clutch of younger bhoys coming through Kelleher Wardropp Lindsay Breslin Nesbit Miller all these kids will be bursting their arse this Summer knowing there could be an opportunity to break through like Kieran like McGregor and Henderson done previously.
These friendlies could be an ideal stage to let some of them shine like McGeough did against Madrid before he was taken out.
Deila will blood them not so sure a new face will knowing winning in Europe is the be all to some.
That’s why I think if he does secure the double then he should be given till January.

I read a post on a blog the other day,he said, next year we will bring in all the young players and ditch the auld yins and we will sweep all our competitors aside, best laugh i had in ages.
Interestingly the current Celtic Manager, when the going gets tough,KT aside ditches the new Young Players and reverts to the OAPs to bring us over the line.
Of course Development is crucial and we need to see good young players, but its a fine balance to integrate young players into the first team, especially when the pressure is on to win the league.

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  mike

You are not wrong there Mike it is a difficult balance to find but being let down so often this season I think he decided to let the likes of Mulgrew Brown and Commons prove they still have something to give when the pressure is on?Which is was.
Mulgrew stood up to the challenge the other 2 not so I thought.
It could as well have been Brown instead of Commons who was hooked at half time.
I can see a changing of the guard this Summer with Broonie and Co being gradually phased out.
Lustig Izzy Brown Commons Ambrose etc are not producing the same levels they were 3-4 year ago now.
This is why I think we need to bring in 2/3 proven players instead of the usual “potential” that we have been getting in recent years.
It all needs to be balanced better.

mike

Reply to  mike

Its not often we agree charlieS,but we do on this, read a report the other day that the club were interested in the Dundee full back, the brother of Mcginn at Hibs, who was also touted as Broonies replacement. My own view is that i would like to see Bigger, more athletic defenders, especially in defence and mid.
Yesterday i highlighted the abundance of players we have in the squad,a lot of them i think will be sold in the summer to enable us to bring in some 7/8mill.for player purchase, like you i hope that it is for more experienced pros.

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  mike

I agree I like the CB’s to be in the Kelvin Wilson.Mjalby,Bobo molde too.
Strength bit of pace and a thou shall not pass mentality.
I think Bitton may well be sold possibly even Griffiths if a serious bid comes in (cause that’s the kinda shit pistol Pete pulls every summer now).
A clearout of the slower less useful players and perhaps a mass reduction in playing stafff could well make oom (and wages) available for 2 or 3 ready made ready to go experienced men.
The spine of the team ie 1 CB 1 CMF/DMF and one 1 Striker/Winger.
With the ability of our fringe guys we could well have the mobile side Deila has been looking at building.
There is ability in the squad it just needs a bit of calm and effective support from quality experienced guys.
Those who have in recent years been supplying that have failed to produce this season.
Mulgrew could be the one who survives the drop he at least has delivery and a pass that can be effective.
I hope we target some and finally put some much needed Investment in.
Otherwise like this Season I will expect more of the same.
Regardless of who is in charge.

i am now totally on the fence over the whole should Ronny be in charge next season, i can see both sides of the yes/no debate……if we win the double gubbing the huns on the way i would be ok with Ronny having another shot at it next season, but if we dont improve over our remaining games and limp over the line then i would be worried if Ronny was still in charge for next season….
i really do feel sorry for the guy, he has put everything he has into us and he has been abused unfairly…..but we need to see the team getting better so i think the last 10 games of this season will be make or break for Ronny

Reply to  ewanbhoy

Ewanbhoy, he has been doing his job to the best of his ability, I am happy to concede that, but since he gets well paid for it I would suggest that doing that has not earned him another shot Europe , we should gub a lower league side made up of unproven younger players, unwanted elsewhere English journeymen and an over the hill, not particularly good in the first place striker so I am not factoring that into long term planning. We have seen no sign of any coherent long term TEAM planning or effective short term crisis management from him.
As for the unfair abuse it goes with the job , the fact that as an empathetic human being with feelings means you feel sorry for him is a natural reaction but unless you can honestly say you can see things being better next year you need to get off that fence mate

Ewanbhoy I am happy to concede that Ronnie has given his all for the team, however given that that is his job for which he gets well paid I would fully expect this.
He has failed time and time again to influence the course of big matches, his team selection is baffling, he appears to lack any motivational abilities whatsoever.
If we beat Rangers comfortably next month so what, they are a lower league side with journeymen who couldn’t get a team that wanted them in England. younger players untried at a higher level spearheaded by an over the hill, not very good in the first place, striker, we should be beating them ffs. You should not let the fact that as a decent human being you feel sorry for a man losing his job confuse the bigger issue here, do you have any real confidence that Ronnie will do better next term that the team will be any less of a chore to watch, that they will not embarrass us in Europe, if the answer is no,even now with hopefully ten games to go in his second season you need to get off that fence mate

Ewanbhoy. For me it is much simpler. He needs to be making the correct decisions. So far this season he has made life very difficult for himself by sticking to a role selection (inside forward/half-back) etc that plays right into the hands of these bus parking teams. I have tried everything I can think of to make it clear that Stromgotset won the league as underdogs with almost no teams parking the bus, but Celtic are not underdogs domestically and what worked for Stromgotset is not going to work so well at Celtic due to the difference scenario. He needs to be more flexible and accept his glorious tactic is for the underdog.

For the record if Celtic did decide to twist Manager wise in the Summer I would not be averse to Strachan taking the reigns again personally.
Yogi Hughes would also be an acceptable appointment too as I think he would demand the players fight for every point regardless of form.
Bottom line is though we need a clearout of dead wood and to sign several players with proven ability.

He has presence too and knows the script at Celtic not too mention the fact he has brought them success.
He’s honest and forthright and probably commands respect.
Put it this way had he been in charge when Commons pulled his puss in Europe he would no doubt have been wearing his baws as ear muffs next morning.

…for some reason CS it sort of reminds me of sevco running for the cardigan when things went belly up. Ah like Strachan but don’t want him back ( don’t think he would come anyway ) anyone else on this site remember abuse Strachen he got from some on this site?

I think that day is coming bud Brown is struggling now I think to produce the same levels of drive and energy.
I can see him retiring early to go into Coaching/Management myself as he has put some mileage in by comparison to others older than him.
Could he be a future Celtic Manager?

Dermot,
If you are reading this in-between teeing off at Marbella or somewhere equally exotic, I have a request…
I wish to see the Celtic manager replaced by an Irishman, Martin O’Neill, assisted by Roy Keane and Neil Lennon.
Please, pretty please.
Also Dermot, could you sack the striker scout and invest in somebody who knows what the fuck they are looking for?
Could you inform Peter Lawwell that he will not get his £500,000 bonus if we fail to reach the CL group stages.
Also Dermot, the PR department at Celtic is in need of a clearout, may I suggest Liam Neeson and Bobo Balde replace the current PR team?

Finally Dermot, could you and your fellow billionaires on the board find it ( cash) between you to clear the co-op loan and put four or five top players on the park?

What we will give in return? Pretty much fill out Paradise for every game, buy loads of merchandise and get pished in the Kerrydale suite before every game?

How’s about it Dermot? You could make this a great Easter?

Happy Birthday Bertie Auld. I saw an interview with him a few years ago he was asked ‘of the two teams -the Lisbon lions and the Seville team- which would win?’ He thought for a moment and answered “well I think it would be really close it might even end up a draw but you have to remember we’re all in our sixties now”.
Thanks for the diary.

Well said Ian in Alberta,I was always a big fan of Bertie, the cheeky wee Gallus Glesga Bhoy,i remember him being hard as nails, but with great skill,we could be doing with his skill and leadership today.
Happy Birthday wee man and hope there are many more.

Monti, good post. Who knows? Billionaires can do whatever they want. However, why would MON come back here? Likewise, Lennon would never be an assistant and why Keane? You’ve overlooked Michael O’Neill. Strachan would turn us around. Yogi Huges? Why the hell not? I’d still like Ronny to prove us ALL wrong.

What a job he has done and humped the zombies too.
Didn’t he have a job with us not so long ago

Devoy, your faith in boak Ronny does you proud, mistakenly unfortunately,Montis post was on the button, his is a firm conviction based on experience,he could be right.I like the thought of WGS also, with J.Hughes as his assistant.Peter Houston i also like as a number 2,but dont think he would revert back to that.Mon and R.Keane would be my preference, the thought of the Keano stare at the Scottish Media would do it for me.Disciplin ill gie you Dicsiplin ya daft xxxx.
So Devoy sorry but its back behind the sofa for you.
Peter Houston was a scout at Cellic and a good friend of the club.

Given the quality of the opposition in the SPL for the last two years, failing to win the title for Celtic is a sackable offence. Therefore if RD secures his second title this season (and I think he will) he is only achieving the bare minimum. He should be judged on his achievements in Europe and the other Scottish competitions. I think we all agree that our European performances in the last two seasons have been a disaster. In addition, we have lost to ICT and Ross County in the Scottish Cup and League Cup. He has only delivered the League Cup last season. I have never seen so many empty seats at Celtic Park as I have witnessed this season and we are no certainties to beat this new team from Glasgow next month. The quality of the football each week is dire. Go Ronnie, go – pleaseeeeeeeee!

there are more empty seats because of celtic plc doing fuck all about res 12 than because of the performances on the pitch and honest mistakes beat us against ict and ross county

Lennon didn’t get into to Europe in his first 2 seasons, OK after one of the most embarrassing performances ever against sion we sneaked through the back door and he lost major finals and semi’s to lower standard opposition, did we not stand behind him? Yes we did, however you knew there was something there, with Ronny as much I love him there is no passion, there is no drive, there is no giruy! Never mind that our players can’t actually pass 5 yards to each other. Rogic’s goal the other day was actually meant to be a one two with mcgregor!

one of Ronny’s biggest failings is that we cant defend….especially corners and free kicks, and how badly did that cost us in Europe ?

Reply to  ewanbhoy

Ewanbhoy defence was terrible agreed m8. But to me the midfield have been dire far too easily pushed around in games.
Also when you go back to the Malmo game from our corner they score. It’s 2-0 to us why play the same set piece as we always do. Keeping the ball is key in any game of football but more importantly in Europe. Ronnie should have told his defenders to stay put and take short corners. No leadership on or off the park.
We need some strength in there time to get tough tackling no nonsense midfielders who win the ball and pass it on to the flair players.

You think losing our Central defence in the summer helped him then?
Then the injuries to Mulgrew Jozo Janko and Lustig?
We broke a 96 year League defensive record last Season btw.

Back 4 issues in Europe this Season.
Fist off Boyata never played a game and Boyata as well as being raw had little experience in Europe neither had Janko or Tierney.
Stjarnan Home Back 4
Lustig Boyata Mulgrew Izzy
Stjarnan Away
Lustig Boyata Van Dijk Mulgrew 2 changes
Qarabag Home
Lustig Boyata Van Dijk Izzy 1 change
Qarabag Away
Lustig Boyata Van Dijk Izzy Same
Malmo Home
Lustig Boyata Van Dijk Izzy Same
Malmo Away
Janko Boyata Van Dijk Mulgrew 2 changes
Ajax Away
Lustig Boyata Simunovic Izzy 3 changes
Fenerbahce Home
Lustig Boyata Ambrose Tierney 2 changes
Molde Away
Lustig Boyata Ambrose Izzy 1 change
Molde Home
Lustig Boyata Simunovic Tierney 2 changes
Ajax Home
Lustig Boyata Simunovic Tierney same
Fenerbahce Away
Lustig Boyata Simunovic Tierney same
Also bear in mind Lustigs form has been poor due to recovery from injuries.
As a result of the above Gordons form was affected as is often the case with a continually changing back line.
Hardly ideal conditions for a European campaign.

Dunno if it’s just me but when you see pics of the lions don’t they look like their hearts are going to burst out of their hoops.
Looking at the pics of Bertie today he looks 6ft tall beaming with pride. That’s what that shirt should do to players, not make them hide or be fearful but be mighty and proud.
