Celtic Diary Sunday March 20: Finally, A Substitution That Worked

Having ditched Sky some time ago, and invested in a firestick, I was sitting watching the game yesterday with just a couple of minutes to go, and the phone went. It was Etims colleague Desi Mond, who in a calm voice , pointe dout hat “that was some substitution ” ..

Thinking he was referring to the decision to continue the game without any ort of pace, leaving Forrest on the bench for the inclusion of Tom Rogic, I murmured “aye,,,”, just as the Aussie Ardiles crashed his contender for goal of the century into the top corner.

Well, it cheered me up a bit, but knowing that i was around a minute behind live transmission, I had to keep asking Desi have they scored yet.

Not going back to Sky , though. Even if i have to wait a week to catch up.

Rogic’s goal lit up an otherwise turgid performance where Celtic looked like a team that had just met on the bus on the way to the ground.

There was little cohesion, less pace and the introduction of Colin Kazim richards up front did littlle else than put Leigh Griffiths off his natural game.

Somehow, when Kazim richards did what he was asked to do, Griffiths was nowhere near, and it has to be said that whilst it’s far too early to judge if the two can work together, this stage of the season with the games being so important, is not the time to try something new.

But it’s results that count, and coupled with Motherwell’s win over Aberdeen, there’s a little bit of breathing space at the top of the table again.

Ronny deila, the subject of a shameful press campaign, seemed a little pleased with the goal; so pleased, in fact, he allowed himself a sweary roar..

sweary ronny

..which led to Sky’s David Tanner apologising. However, no-one at Sky apologised for the much more offensive words that have come out of Tanner’s mouth this season, so we’ll leave it at that.

Deila has been accused of being aloof-I’ve checked, I can say that word- in the past, but there was no doubting the passion at full time yesterday;

“With a goal like that, it is the best way to win sometimes. We didn’t play well but we kept fighting, and the fans were unbelievable. That is a moment we are going to remember for a long time.

“I was so pleased with Tom coming on and doing that and I think the fans were fantastic as well. They are always good but today was even better because we didn’t play well but they stood behind the team all the way and they got the reward in the end. It was a fantastic feeling.

“It’s good to celebrate a victory, that’s why we do this. The fans were so good today and there was so much emotion for me and all the others so it was a good day in the end.

“You can’t control your words in those kinds of situations but I don’t think I’m the only one in Britain to have used those words.”

There did seem to be a coming together of supporters, players and management after the final whistle, and thats perhaps the biggest result of yesterday. The media campaign to divide and conquer was shattered, and there was an incident at the end of the game that typified the new mood, and may have made a hero out of one of the new players…

after the goal, as you can imagine, the support were rather exuberant, and one young fellow was huckled by a steward, and was being shepherded toward the police. Big Colin Kazim Richards intervened, and freed the Kilmarnock One, who scurried back into the crowd to safety and anonymity. Especially if he’s now deleted his thanks….

Watch the bottom left hand corner in this clip..

Scenes

The look on the stewards face is, well, priceless.

Still, who’s to say the police would have taken any action ? Their presence at games these days is purely in an observatory capacity. You wouldn’t even notice they were there…

Over in Australia, they noticed that Rogic had scored a good goal..

It was a great night in Scotland for our overseas Aussies but one name stood out as the Caltex Socceroos prepare to fly home for this week’s World Cup qualifiers.

Midfielder Tom Rogic came off the bench to score a last minute screamer for Celtic, sealing an important 1-0 away win over Kilmarnock.

The 23-year-old fired an unstoppable left-footed drive into the top corner from beyond the box, with the three points extending the Hoops lead in the Scottish Premiership to four points.

Rogic, who will join the Socceroos squad for matches against Tajikistan and Jordan, described the goal as the best he’s scored in his career post match.

“I had a good week of training, scored a couple of nice goals but nothing like that,” said Rogic.

“It’s pretty special but obviously nice to make the difference and get the win.

“It was just one of those ones you hit and you know it’s going in.

“A nice moment and something I won’t forget. It’s pretty special.”

So, everybody’s happy, and it’s a shame that the international break is now upon us, and Celtic cannot build on the momentum that may have been gained from the result at rugby Park.

The league isn’t won yet, but it’s looking a lot easier than it was yesterday morning.

Especially as there has been a problem in aberdeen, reported here by twitter’s north eastern correspondent..

Heard there was a power cut in Aberdeen, yesterday afternoon ? The lights went out, around 4.50 pm GIRUY McInnes !

however, one thing is worrying me. I’ve seen this a couple of times now…what’s with the cross dressing ?

Other players are wearing them as well.  What is it ? And whatever happened to proper footballers, who didn’t wear womens underwear beneath their tops ?

Iancelts comment about the cats pretending to be the Lisbon lions won yesterday, and will be added as soon as Charlie saiz checks his twitter account.

Today, I’d like an explanantion for this, if you could oblige…

Bondi, If you watched the game, you would have seen a team who

played pretty poorly,Rogics goal was a belter,a star in a black sky.(Artistic) with the emphises on the tic.
Without his goal, a draw would have given the sheep a big lift

Celtic can’t keep playing like that. No leadership in the team and we’re just lucky we got the goal and Aberdeen went and blew it. The league is not yet won because we are simply not good enough. It will be a stagger to the finishing line. Confidence seems to be low and it will be very interesting to see what the reaction will be if we go a goal down. We’re just lucky the Dons are as hapless as we are.

Apart from a cracking goal to grace any game, that performance yesterday was, sadly, the same as too many before. Utter dross and we are lucky that Aberdeen lost to Motherwell but the fact we haven’t won the league yet just shows how badly we are performing. Every week down the West London CSC I hear “that’s the worst performance I’ve ever seen”. Every week. When will it change, how will it change and who will change it? It’s not just the press who condemn Ronny, plenty of diehards are too.

Terrible all round performance yesterday, would struggle tae find a man of the match in a green shirt, midfield looked lazy and why the hell do we need 2 holding midfielders now in Brown and Biton, gone are the days of pearcing runs intae the box by Broonie,Richards didn’t have to bad a game but he’s certainly no Harston or Sutton but that’s probably because we actually had to spend money on them 2, the one thing that does do my heed in is the quality of oor crosses, whether from corners or open play, either it doesn’t get past the first defender or its lobbed in the general direction of the penalty box and hope somebody might be on the end of it, but a stunning goal,3 points and the sheepshaggers bottling it, so happy days…KTF

With 5 mins to go, I was wanting a drink! 5 mins after full time I was wanting a drink! So apparently I only want to drink on two occasions – when I’m happy and when I’m not.

That last 5 mins were critical. The mood around me was getting a bit hairy as some were REALLY pissed at Celtics performance. A lot of the shouts were not particularly supportive!

At full time everybody was bouncing and singing. That one goal not only got us 3 points but will keep us together for the remaining games. I don’t even want to think about what a draw would have done to us.

A big crowd and a big performance against Hertz will cement what we had at the final whistle.

our supporters were fantastic yesterday and the unity of fans, players and management at the end was brilliant…..oh how sick are the media now ?
i think i have the answer to whats wrong with the team right now…..Brown should be the most influential player for us driving us on from the middle of the park, but actually he is doing none of that, looks a yard of the pace and is a weak point in the team at the moment.
last season when we were playing really well Brown was the driving force but maybe his legs are starting to slow down and his engine is coming to the end of its prime…….the good thing is we have the perfect player to step in and take over and even though this player has had a loss of form and confidence this season…..which is because he has been played out of position……step forward Stuart Armstrong….

I suppose Celtic arn’t the only team playing since last July whovarecatruggling, Man U,Spurs and a few others would sign up to the impact of a 9 month(so far) season. Convenient if you have all your European football in August.
real spirit yesterday playing for the shirts, the supporters each other and the manager. Delia went with a different game plan, Richards physically won practically everything even at times he didn’t get there first but came away with the ball. Mulgrew was excellent at centre half and despite pace problem covered well for Tietneybwho I think is being used too much, Izzy should be in for some games to give KT a break as he learns his trade. Brown, Lustig, Commkns Bittia are not as effective as they can for whatever reason, recovering from injuries, long season or loss of form or a combination of all. They are grinding out the results and the support is back to its best again. Winning the league together is the priority, in fact it is the only thing.

A lot off clubs that have played in europe this season are struggling Man Utd, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea , Celtic have been playing since mid July and it shows. Those whose European challenge finished in August must feel a bit lucky. To be fair to Ronnie he brought Richards in and he had some freedom to move around winning a lot of the ball even when a Kille player was first to it, it may not have yielded anything directly but they had to be 100% every time, as the stats showed it was one way traffic. The team played for the jerseys, the magnificent support and the manager.
We need to keep on staying together until the title is won especially at Celtic Park where the home support needs to match the travelling support for loyalty and patience, it is not won yet but if we stay together it will be. Brown,Commons Bitton, Lustig seem to be still revering from their injuries.I think KT should be tested more with Izzy getting a few games. KT is young still developing and the coaches need to be aware and not sacrifice him for short term gain.

GREAT to see the return of the roar, especially the sweary part. Some of you need to get off the press bandwagon and start acting like proper Tims again. Agree that Broonie struggled yesterday. Spot on
The delivery was rank rotten that’s why Commons was rightly hooked at half time.
Doubt very much Lenny would have hooked someone that early unless injured.
Deila might not be everybody’s cup of tea but he will remove players when not performing regardless of who they are and do it swiftly.

Charlie Mulgrew is a Left Back so he had cover with Mulgrew.
This is the bonus of having a utility player like him in the squad.
Ambrose can also be deployed in 3 positions on the right hence why he has been retained also.
That’s the RB RCB RDM LDM LCB and LB positions covered just by having those two available.

True enough charlie, but with a squad as big as ours, where is the planning?
C.M. centre back or left back,he cannot play in two positions at once.
Boyata and Efe are no longer first picks, what does that tell you about who is picking the players.
S.Allan,R christie,Tom Rogic, along with the rest of the squad and players out on loan, means the squad is a, to big and b unbalanced,it needs a large clear out with experienced players brought in,hopefully in the summer.

To me the game turned into a war of attrition with patches of good play. I thought kaxim did some good things and tried to grt himself useful in a new team. Hes not brilliant but did ok. He needs time though unfortunately the season is in its latter stages griffiths lay off to commons was superb and a goal should have been scored. Sometimes a sub has a better perception of whats needed and to me rogic knew that it would take a long range effort would do the job. Apart from commons mcgregor ot forrest rogic is one who can pull a goal like that off. The man id hungry to prove himself and he has done it with aplomb just like he did against hearts. Ronny you need to get a settled team out there and if rogic isnt one of our best 11 then i think its a joke. Commons is useful but his best is over. Players need consistent runs to play with confidence without taking it for granted. Squad is too big and ronny is too indecisive which is a recipe for disaster.

Mulgrew is a good composed footballer with a football brain. When boyata came on he nearly cost us the game. Whether he is bereft of confidence or he is out of his depth he isnt cutting it. Get it fucking sorted ronny and get the team in good form for the hun game because they will be asking more questions than killie

Rebus67

Turgid is a good word to describe Celtic’s play for modt of the match yesterday. The first 15 minutes could be exempted from that, but by minute 18 the rot set in. Then of course there was the goal and the few minutes after that when we controlled the ball. In between these periods the performance was very poor, bordering on clueless.

We have seen this time and time again this season. I do not think we can blame it on an extended season. We have a large player pool and rightly or wrongly, RD has rotated players in and out of games. The problem is that performances are so poor that cannot bring himself to try players like Allan, Christie consistently.

I believe that there are two main reasons for the many poor performances that we have seen domestically. I like the number “two” because it seems so much more impressive than “one”, and it does not place a strain on the auther that a “five” would do!!!

Firstly, The management team cannot read a game as it progresses. They are not good at spotting what the opposition is doing to nullify our efforts. And more importantly, they are not good at figuring out what needs to be done to adjust our efforts. Substitutions are usually a similar player doing the same as before, only with a different face and pair of legs. An exception was Rogic yesterday. Incidently, while we are basking in the afterglow of his goal, think about what he did for the twelve or so minutes in was on the park before he scored. Oops, is it not PC to say that?

Secondly, comes the great mystery. The way we play on match day is determined by what happens during the week…..in training, in practices, in special instructions given to individual players about their role on the park. So, just exactly what is going on every day of every week of every month during these sessions? I do not know the answer to that, but everyone and his/her dog can see it is not effective.

The results on match days are merely the outcomes of these daily sessions, plus a bit of luck or bad luck, as the fates decide.

The real ROAR that was heard yesterday is that of Timdom uniting behind a piece of brilliance associated with the Greats of our heritage.

The fact he took the innefectual Commons off at half time say’s to me they were aware of the fact the delivery from set piece was shite hence bringing Roberts on.
Bitton was also not imposing himself enough so dropping McGregor in alongside Brown and putting Rogic in front changed the dynamics slightly as we had a bit more energy and urgency in Central midfield last 20 minutes.
I would pefer we stick with the 4-2-3-1 and leave the 2 up scenario till the Summer Pre Season and go from there to see if Griffiths and Richards can operate as a pair.
The evidence so far would suggest this is not going to work as well as the 1 up Griffiths.

Rebus it’s number 1 I keep harping on about this; by playing the way we play we are compacting entire teams in the 18 yard box we need to have width on 1 side or the other with an attacking player (not just the full backs Charlie Saiz). Alas I doubt anyone will actually listen to me until a spend hours trawling through out poorest games this season taking screen shots and putting all of the evidence into a piece. Something that will take hours upon hours. Incidentally does anyone remember how Nigeria have Germany a scare in the last World Cup? That is because they Played very organized and defensively. All the other teams that tried to play their game got beat down. This tactic with 2 inverted wingers is not terrible, it just doesn’t work well against busses.

However, for a little while that torpor was lifted by the excitement of Rogic’s thrust to the hearts of those that wish Celtic to lose the league!

Reply to  john young

This has been my argument all along we have numbers,we have players on high wages by comparison to the sides we struggled against in Europe but we do not have any better quality when you watch these sides they can all pass trap and control a ball to a decent level meaning when our better players are under performing (as has been the case this season-all season)then the replacement coming in is of a poorer standard.
If we wish this to change we as is always the case need to be investing in better quality to start with.
We haven’t done this for years hence why we have gone backwards as a Club at the higher level.
It’s not rocket science the Board are ultimately Culpable for the level and standard of recruitment.
We have paid too much for too little.

Spot on charliesaiz, and I do not understand the logic behind this, they have absolutely no sell on value,so we shell out money on contacts for players that will only move to the SPL so apart from the money used in siging this type of players you then have fcuk all return,C Cole an 18month contact not even on the bench, even at 10k/week that is 1 and a 1/2 mill down the stank, yet we can pay PL a huge bonus very year, monetary madness.

A happy Palm Sunday after the weekend results. I agree with Ralph, great to see the fans, team and management celebrate.
Yeah, it was a lacklustre performance, but on plastic against a team that wanted to spoil, it was a brilliant result.Love Delilah s passion, also Kazim Richards actions.

Cartvale 88 spot on. I also want to see more of Allan and Christie. Man Utd Arsenal etc probably have big squads too.
The pint about Mulgrew having a football brain spit on, often compensates for lack of pace, just breads it well.

Those who say Scott Allan is not the answer are probably the same know alls who never wanted griffiths when we signed him. These guys and Christie need a chance in the team and it’s time brown and biton were left out completely. Brown is wasting every ball now and his touch and drive are away. So let us judge when players get a run of games but deila will not change a thing team wise. Just look at Johanson, he has been terrible.

Shocking performance yesterday, however I would take a 1 nil and playing crap for the rest of the season just to get over the line and win the league. But if we play like that for the rest of the season we will be lucky to win any game unless it’s against the blind no hopers 11! Great goal though, and it set me up for a great weekend of partying! Thanks Tom. I still love Ronny, but he has to go in the summer, I can’t watch that standard of football for the next year.

All he has to do is play with 1 wide man on his natural side and make all of those target men fight Tom Rogic for that spot and we will be enjoying our football again. We will need non-target man backup for Griff next season though. Guido Marulingo (free agent unless anything has changed) and Venton Berisha (Norway U21) should do nicely. Two players cut from a similar cloth as Griff 1 will bring technical prowess to the squad and the other youth.

saturday was again on of the worst performances of the season… again the manager can breath a huge sigh of relief because of results elsewhere… never looked like scoring and things need to change fast before its too late

Monti

Bgbhoy, Andybhoy,
Saturday once again was an complete, inept, dysfunctional performance yet again from this side and puzzling team selection once again.
The choice to play Kazim at the expense of Forrest, Armstrong or Roberts is just fucking wrong.
A 90th minute wonder goal from Rogic was all that separated Celtic from three draws with the mighty Kilmarnock?
I still believe Deila will give Aberdeen at least one more chance to get back into the title race, simply because this Celtic side are a defeat waiting to happen.
Scepovic, Ciftci and Stokes out on loan is utter fucking nonsense, I have said all season we are over dependant on Griffiths, Kazim is all we would have left to pin our hopes on should the worst and probably expected injury to Griffiths happens.
I see the Ronny whimper returned at the weekend?
Fucking cringeworthy nonsense…

DEILA OUT!

BroxburnBhoy

I celebrated the goal with gusto! That goal irrespective of other events or how the team played got us 3 points. Who cares what Aberdeen did or anyone else did. 3 points in the bag, a great goal and four points clear with a game in hand. Yes the team played poorly, yes there must be changes at the end of the season and lets win the league and cup.

Hector,
It’s a great feeling when you hear Celtic scoring a late winning goal, but almost immediately you are brought down to earth, because we should be making lighter work of teams like Killie!

Charlie Saiz

Are you really asking that question?? Your literally the only person who thinks he should get another season. Of course your right and every paying customer is wrong

Monti

Because he can’t put a team on the park that can win in Europe, or play decent football against SPFL opposition.

Simples.

So we are now in the frame of mind where a League and Cup Double is no longer classed as acceptable at Celtic.

I wasn’t there bondi. Haven’t been to rugby park since the vote in 2012. I just didn’t jump up. I was pleased obviously but I had been hands over face for the last 89 mins. It was poor as I have ever seen. Remember. This was Kilmarnock. Same group of players that have shipped 6 to Dundee and 5 to thistle.
