Celtic Diary Friday March 18; Media Switch On Deflector Shields

With the Resolution 12 isue being roundly ignored by the media, they have been desperately searching for anyone to talk about anything. Even going so far as to give ronny Deila space to tell them what he thinks of them.

and like the traditonal circus, it’s struggling to get any paying customers.

RONNY Deila has told David Moyes and Co to keep throwing their hats in the ring – because he loves the circus of Scottish football.

The Celtic boss insists nothing will shift his focus from delivering the double and earning another crack at the Champions League next season.

Former Manchester United boss Moyes and ex Hoops defender Malky McKay have spoken about the attraction of the Parkhead hotseat this week, while a string of pundits have tipped Neil Lennon for a return to his old job.

Deila won’t lose sleep over the speculation – and even laughed out loud when asked if his current position was akin to suitors trying to take a beautiful girl off his arm.

He said: “They want to take my job and my lady? The only thing you can do is make that lady happy so she wants to stay.

David Moyes could be the next Hoops boss .” Fucking hooray “, said Ralph Malph of Etims.

“You can’t do anything about others wanting her or the club. It’s about doing your job, getting results, getting the best out of your players and carrying on.

“I have been in different positions before with the media, whether it is Chris Sutton, John Hartson or whoever, but winning two more trophies for Celtic is where my focus lies.

“There are also newspapers in Norway who have to fill pages and talk with different people – and that’s what football should be.

“It can’t always be everyone saying the same things all the time. There has to be a little bit of a circus. It’s okay.

“What can I say about others talking? That it is not an attractive job? Of course it is an attractive job. That’s fine by me. I know that and it’s why I am happy to be here.”

You learn from experience, that’s for sure. But I have always had a belief in myself.

“It’s about being in balance as a person. It’s about one thing. If I crack about something it is because something else is wrong in my life. I have other things to worry about than this talk.

“Everyone knows what will make Celtic happy this season – win the league and, hopefully, the Scottish Cup.”

Over at the Ibrox Evening times, there was consternation…

Celtic boss Ronny Deila starts planning for NEXT season as

job speculation intensifies

“We are talking about pre-season all the time. It has to be right,” said Deila.

“We are going to do a lot of the same things as last summer but try to do it even better. I think we are going to try and get a trip, while also trying to be in Scotland as well.

“I think it’s going to be a little bit different but I think it will be better.

‘We are talking about pre-season all the time. It has to be right.

“I always watch the Champions League because I love it, it’s the best level you can watch. I watch as a supporter sometimes and also to learn and see trends and what others are doing. “It’s a very good place to look at it and it doesn’t cost me energy, watching these games gives me energy. I love football.

“There is unbelievable quality in teams such as Bayern Munich and Barcelona, but you have other teams like Gent and Wolfsburg, PSV Eindhoven have also done very well.

“When you have good generations and have built something then anything is possible, especially here at Celtic where we have the fans and Celtic Park.”

Whilst there has been no public statement backing the ,manager, it could be concluded there has been a private one. Hopefully, if Deila does stay, he will emerge a more street wise boss after the summer break.

Leigh Griffiths, who has flourished under the Norwegian, added his tuppence worth;

“It’s frustrating for us because it’s disrespectful. The gaffer has got a job here and he is doing okay, we are still sitting top of the league.

“So for other managers to say they are interested in the job when there’s a guy still in charge, it’s poor from them.

“The gaffer will just ignore it but us, as players, we get a wee bit frustrated with it.”

Which, of course, is exactly what they hope will happen. There’s no doubt there’s a campaign of destabilisation underway. Apart from the usual nonsense, there seems to be a real fear that Celtic will not only beat Second Rangers in the cup, but inflict such damage that Mark Warburton will run out of Hampden after the game, and not stop until he reaches the confines of the M25 motorway.

Just as he was starting to improve the game for the benefit of all, as well.

Neil Lennon, now out of work since leaving bolton, has said he will look for work in the south. Much to the disappointment of the SMSM, who would love for him to drop even the tiniest hint he is interested in the job. He won’t say it, so someone has to say it for him…

Barry Ferguson: I’ve had fisticuffs with Neil Lennon and while he’d want to come back to Celtic, he’s got too much CLASS to say it

Well, technically, someone is saying it, the ghost writer, and attributing it to Ferguson, but the idea is the same. to get people talking about the possibility.

although the article did give me a chuckle..

But what really annoys me is the queue of would be candidates all lining up to throw their hats into the ring. That’s sleekit, slippery behaviour as far as I’m concerned

Sleekit , slippery behaviour ? Please explain, Barry…

Anyway, we’ve told you the plan as far as the management goes.

Notice Michael o’Neill, who somehow managed to get his name in the fame, has now signed a four year deal with the regional Irish team, and thus has ruled himself out of the running…

Moyes, Mackay, Rodgers  and all the other hopefuls haven’t gone anywhere yet, but thats because no-one has asked them. And frankly, after his racist outbursts last year, Malky Mackay will be very careful what he says these days, even if its only “Do you want fries with that ? ”

There was more advice from Stuart McCall, who so nearly got Second rangers into the top league at the first time of asking should Deila wish to take it. give or take five or six goals , that is.

“There’s no doubt Rangers have got real momentum now, Hearts and Aberdeen are getting stronger too so it’s got the makings of a really good season. It all depends what happens in the summer. Rangers will have lots of sell-outs next season and with things like corporate hospitality their finances will be strong again.”

“It was only two months ago Rangers punters were saying they hadn’t spent enough money, but they spent what they needed to. I remember saying to Dave King at the time that you don’t need to spend fortunes to get out of the Championship.”

Well, he’d know, I suppose.

Frank McAvennie has given the club some sound advice,

“There are a lot of very average players at the club just now and someone has to put their hand up and take responsibility for that, The signings need to be players that excite the supporters,”

He’s right, but I include the comment simply because it shows that the media are now lowering the requirements for quality input. Of course the club needs “exciting ” signings, but a trip to the real world wouldn’t do McAvennie any harm now and again. These type of players do not want to come to Glasgow, and thats the reality of it.

And Graeme Souness thinks that Neil Lennon would be a better manager after his Bolton experience. Lennon, of course , quit Bolton when he found out that not all managers continue to get large tax free lump sums from previous employers.

All of course to avoid talking about Resolution 12 and the corruption at the top of the Scottish game, and the collusion directly below them.

Dortmund fans have the right idea.

Those in the SFA need to be removed. Either that or..

Nobody won the caption competition yesterday, after the replies descended into a bit of a rabble, so I put on the first episode of house of Cards instead while I had my tea.

Stop fighting amongst yourselves, there’s bigger battles to fight.

So, here’s todays…

What is the point in talking about Managerial candidates, who is staying, who is going,The C.L.or Europa League if the game in Scotland is corrupt. Why would you go to a game if you believe that everyone is hell bent in promoting only one team.
We either have to get Res.12 sorted or Fuck them and walk away. The time for action is now,not keyboard punching, someone has to get things organised,be it protests, boycotts or whatever, then the message has to go out to the broader support.I would gladly contribute to whatever is needed, common lets go.

i like many, i think hit the panic button after we drew with Dundee a few weeks back not so much about not winning the game it was more about how poor we were and had been for alot of this season and thought we need to change manager…….
now with the media’s treatment of Ronny has got my back up and i am going to give Ronny my full support until the end of the season….all this talk of a new manager must stop now.
moyes is talking about massive investment in the team, meaning going into massive debt and wages increasing to a level where we would end up like rangers….dead.
talk of Lennon coming back…..really ? how many young players came through and were given a chance ? not too many plus he was totally show up at Bolton and dont give me any of this but money restraints there pish…..a good manager can combat that if he knows what he is doing and how to get the best out of players….no way would i want Lennon back.
and to be honest all the names being mentioned actually worry me.
if Ronny can win the double then i will be behind him again and back him for next season.
time for all us fans to focus on the team and make sure we win the double….and then we can ram that down the media’s arse.

All this speculation regarding a change in manager ,disharmony among the support etc is a determination to destabilise the club and an attempt to level out the ‘playing field’ at a time when we have a credible challenge in the league and the emergence of the zombies in the spl

We need to try and show a unified front, our support can push us to the title ……and I for one want us to fucking crush those odious c*nts in the semi , i’m sick to fecking death of hearing how great they are ‘cos they beat Dundee ffs

Any less than 4~0 and I would be dissapointed

Rebus67

Ewan,

I have a brother named “Ewan” so therefore I like you already!
To be honest, I have some sympathy with your point. The media do sicken you sometimes, but do not let that cloud your judgement.
Winning the league and cup double is a red herring. Notice how our manager adjusts his objectives as we are eliminated from a competition. Out of the CL, the. It is the Europa plus a treble. Out of the Europa, disgracefully, it is the domestic treble, and so on. Even now he is hoping for the Cup…see how that has loosened up as a priority?
It is never enough for a club like Celtic to just win the league, or even a double. It is how they play as well; it is making a reasonable fist of it in Europe. To call winning a domestic double, or even just the league, the sign of a successful manager, is dummying down expectations. That is what he is doing, and, do you know what? He will do the same thing next year! He has no long term plan, other than keeping his job.
There, I have gone and done what I swore that I would not until season end. Fiddle dee dee!
I am just so frustrated with the hypocrasy of it all! Fit to burst!

Rebus…i hear what you are saying and its a very valid point.
what i am really saying is that between now and the end of the season we as Celtic fans must rally together and show unity and give the team and manager total support and stick up 2 fingers to the media.
as for next season what i am saying there is that if we win the double i think Ronny deserves 1 last chance unless we can find a much better candidate to take over….and none of the names being mentioned in the media come close.

Can’t disagree too much with what you say. I do intend to get behind the team and I shall try and shut up about the mgmt team until the end of the season. However, As Oscar Wilde said on his dearh bed in a cheap hotel, when he looked at the wallpaper, “one of us will have to go!”

I shall not hang around for next season if nothing changes. As the Stranglers said, “Something’s got to change!”

Southside,

True I do not know all of our history but I have a fair idea of it since the sixties when I started following the team.

It is not an easy thing to decide to withdraw support, nor is it a decision that should be made when emotions are high. I have seen some poor teams in the past but I always felt they were trying to achieve something worthwhile in terms of style of play. I do not feel this with the current set-up.

I am not just a fair weather fan. I have shares that I shall never sell and will pass onto my sons. So, please, do not write me off as shallow. Besides I never liked Jim Reeves….reminds me too much of closing time!

The current Celtic squad has. No leaders, irised to be when the team went down to ten they would fight and win, now it is capitulation.
Everyone blames Delilah, but he is one cog in the machine, the real fault lies with Lawell and a board that appears not to believe.
They have allowed a great club to drift, not following a proper PR stance with the media, not standing up to the SFA, or the SPFL, not demanding that clear action is followed regarding Sevco.
Agreeing to pay the extra six pounds for the fans at Kilmarnock is a cop out, they should beta King action to ensure fairness for the fans and the team.
If they continue along this path it leads to disaster, as the majority of fans are realising that the performances are not worth paying for.
Arsenal played Delilahs favourite system against Barca, they were blown away, another team with no spunk.
Celtic need a celebrity out of the bottle merchants and a rethink of where they are going!

Seen Barca last season and they were superb. Seen them recently on t.v and they look even better. Wenger knows they were gubbed as did Ferguson and said as much.. They have build a system of play, arguably since Cruyff and shell out for big additions when needed which is exactly as we should have been doing but didn’t. We could have attracted really good players because we would have been really good ourselves and promoted coaching staff from within (I know Barca and Madrid carve up the t.v. money but this is changing) They planned for the loss of Xavi and have maintained their relentless success. If you had those three would you not play 3 up ?
We could have been contenders instead of the bums which we are.

Rebus67

Steve Naive,

I agree Barca are a superb football organisation. Not just because of the quality of their team, but because of how they can seemlessly replace elements of their team, including their coaches. Is that three in three years? Even coaching changes like that have not disrupted their machine. When Ronnie arrived I thought that is what we would get….a new system of doing things that would be long term. All our teams playing a particular style…..4231. Our youth players slotting into the first team as we sell players on. Trouble is I do not believe that he can do it in such a way that he gets us playing attractive football. Pity, it is a good strategy but………

I kept hoping it was just a bad spell, had them before and no doubt will again ad Hamilton was the turning point but it gradually dawned on me that it wasn’t. Barca front three have hit 106 between them and Messi says this morning that it’s not them it’s the team. Win the double and change the whole fuckin set up, forget Europe and fix it here and now.

I have been saying for the past 5 years we need to invest in quality in order to compete in Europe.
The reason we needed to change our approach is BECAUSE WE HAVEN’T.
We needed a new system and approach to Europe due to the ever widening gulf between the have’s and have not’s.
Our failures this Season have been down to 2 main issues.
1 Losing our Central Defence
2 Losing our key men to injury and loss of form.
Not tactics, not formation or Managerial incompetence as some are claiming on here and elsewhere.
Barcelona operate on a different planet in football terms they could play almost any system and still be 10 times the side we are because they have players of the up most ability.
We don’t we have mediocrity SPL Level bolstered by experience.

Steve, how would you propose how that kind of approach would be funded? I’m impressed with the aspiration to be more like Barca and one reason they are Barca is that they have oodles of cash, over 100,000 season ticket holders and they carve up the TV money with Real Madrid excluding other teams. They are truly a global football brand and make oodles of money more from merchandizing. Like it or not we are in a very different world and we have to deal with the world the way it is rather than the way we would like it to be. We are unable to afford to compete with these types of teams. outside the occasional outlier the richest clubs win the most and the most often. That said can we do better absolutely yes and the Board do have a role to play in setting bolder aspirations that we seem to have today. no doubt they would be well advised to step up!

BroxburnBhoy,

What you say is correct,we are in a completely different league compared to Barca, however the auld adage, success breeds success is still true.Steve is also correct if we had better investment and a better plan with a board that actually gave a fuck then you would add better players and the spiral goes up.
When Fergus gave his sole time to the Tims he had a vested interest in Celtic being a success. Now we have a major shareholder that has not got the time to give us and so we are suffering IMHO neglect, nothing will change untill that changes.

Hi Mike we have been very successful for most of our history. How far back could we have foreseen the way football was going and put in place the long term investment idea? I’d say that even the best of boards would have missed that. How could we have predicted that the Oldco would have ended up liquidated? How could we have foreseen the rise of the EPL and it sucking up the lions share of TV money? What kind of investment plan could have foreseen these events. What we are essentially asking for is for DD to spend his money with no real hope of getting it back. Like the Russian at Chelsea or the Arabs at PSG. DD is also out of that league. I want the same as you for sure, I want to compete on the highest stage and have a chance of European glory and I’m wondering how that can possibly happen given our circumstances and short of a sugar daddy.

Hi Boston, Did you enjoy the celebrations?
Nobody can predict the future, thats very true.
It was good to laugh at thems though, what bugs me though is this, look at Hertz with a commited owner.a Footballing Director of Fitba and a young Manager, with a good strategy. We had an owner Fergus, who had a strategy and cared about the club and was willing to fight for it.
For me its not about winning the C.L.its about qualifying to the group stages to help our club that and having someone who is fully commited to the Tims. Willing to fight for us with good P.R. and an ethical policy with a winning team that we can all relate to.Thats all. HA.HA.not much.

Dave,

As I wrote it, I was aware of your point. i hoped nobody would notice! What I mean to convey is that the manager seems to accept what happens too easily, and adjusts his objectives accordingly.

Any idea what the average tenure of a Celtic manager is over the ladt 10-15 years. Without doing sums, I’d think it was around 4 years, excluding Mowbray. So we can expect two more years of RD according to the trend from the past. So, he is half way through a typical long term strategy for Celtic. How is it looking so far?
However, I shall cheer on the team until the end of the season. I think they really need our support. Oh, what I would have given to be in their shoes, err, boots. I’d have had green and white ones! Was it Sammi who green ones…..I miss him, and I suspect he really misses us.

As we look forward to the year to come, I am delighted to welcome Ronny Deila to Celtic. The Board is fully supportive of the philosophy and long-term approach of the coaching team. We look forward with anticipation to the development of a new team on the pitch that will, no doubt, feed from the passion and dedication of our supporters, and to the continued development of the Club to maintain stability and success for the long term.

Ian Bankier Sept.2014

Celtic have money, they are richer than Gent, Lyon, Sparta Prague, Braga and others who qualify consistently in Europe but they put it in the tin when oldco died figuring we will win the league every year, should win the cups and anything in Europe is a bonus. It’s the way it has panned out, they are still making a profit and point to the ‘constraints’ should anyone ask for better. What a glorious chance we had to really develop the team on the free flowing football philosophy we pioneered in the mid sixties,
Carlton Cole is what he is but for me he encapsulates all that is wrong with Celtic just now.
