Celtic Diary Wednesday March 16: Moyes Panics As Lennon Leaves Bolton.

With Neil Lennon having already stated publicly that he would like to go back to Celtic one day, and we hear he’s getting ready for a return after he heard about the Scottish cup draw…

…Davie Moyes felt he’d better get his cv in quick;

DAVID Moyes has suggested he would consider the Celtic manager’s job – but only if the club relaxed its financial philosophy.

The former Hoops player said that he would ‘want to be able to manage the way that suits me’, adding: “I’d want to be at a club that would give me every chance to win and be involved in the Champions League and be at the top level.”

The Scot has been out of work since he was sacked by Spanish outfit Real Sociedad, after a forgettable spell as Manchester United boss.

‘I want to be able to manage the way that suits me,’ the former Everton and Manchester United boss told PLZ Soccer. ‘I think I build clubs, I think I improve them over the years.

‘Everybody knows my time at Celtic was great. I was a young player and played with great players at Celtic. Celtic’s been a great love of mine.

‘Who knows, who knows, I would never say never but obviously I’ve got ambitions to win things.

‘I’d want to be at a club that would give me every chance to win and be involved in the Champions League and be at the top level.’

Er, you had that chance in Manchester and made an arse of it.

But thats not the issue here.

Celtic have a manager, and he’s on course for a league and cup double.

Honestly, you’d think that there was an agenda to destabilise the club.

What we need is someone without an agenda to talk about Deila and his players. someone we can consider to be a balanced man, who can look at things from more than one perspective.

Someone who can offer two opinions..

ANDY GORAM reckons Celtic are running scared of Rangers ahead of next month’s Scottish Cup semi-final showdown.

The former keeper insists the Hoops will be more worried about Rangers than the Ibrox club will be about the team across the city.

The pair clash at Hampden on April 17 and the Goalie believes Ronny Deila and Co are living in fear.

Goram said: “Celtic will be more worried about us than we will be about them given the way they are playing.

“They are certainly vunerable. I would love the game to be right now because I thought Rangers’ performance against Dundee in the last round was sensational.”

Presumably the pants were removed to enable him to talk out of his arse.

He didn’t disappoint.

“We were nowhere near it last year but the team is far better equipped and the players are all together now.

“The manager has done a fantastic job in getting the team to where it is at the moment.

“When Celtic turn up they are a right good side. But everyone knows they are vunerable at the back.”

Celtic have conceded just 23 league goals in 29 games.

And vulnerable has an L in it.

Agenda ?

Have a look at the BBC’s top four “gossip ” stories;

David Moyes would seriously consider becoming Celtic’s next manager if the club agreed to change its long-standing strict financial philosophy, the former Everton and Manchester United boss having been made aware of an interest in him from the club should they sack Ronny Deila this summer.(The Herald)

Former Celtic players David Moyes and Malky Mackay have refused to rule out taking on the manager’s job with the Scottish champions in the future should the opportunity arise. (The National)

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon intends taking a very short break and then start job hunting in England, contrary to speculation that he was on his way back to the Scottish champions after his departure from Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday. (The Times, print edition)

Neil Lennon has emerged as the bookies favourite to return to Celtic as manager after he left Bolton Wanderers by mutual consent. (Daily Record)

Lennon has at least had the respect to distance himself from the job. He knows more than most the pressures involved as Celtic boss, and Ronny Deila is under more pressure than most.

With Moyes more or less saying that if he got the job-heaven forbid-that he would rebuild the team, maybe the players will start to play for the manager in situ at the moment..

They can start with a convincing performance against Kilmarnock at the weekend. we need them to send out a strong message that we are all in this together. Not like the Better Together campaign of the first independence referendum, but really in it together.

They are determined to stop Celtic from winning the double.

We must be equally determined to ensure it happens.

Kris commons is looking forward to the trip to ayrshire;

“We’ve had good times and bad times there to be fair But it’s a ground I enjoy playing at. We usually get a good following as it’s not too far for the fans to travel to and, although it’s a pitch that has changed quite considerably over the years, to actually play on a surface that you can pass the ball on will suit us better.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing Kilmarnock. I’ve scored a hat-trick there and scored some good goals there so it’s a ground I’m comfortable at. There’s never a hostile environment. It’s just somewhere I enjoy playing and the pitch at the minute should be good for us to pass and move on.

“They’ll be fighting for their lives to stay in the league and every point is crucial for them so they’ll look back on their experiences of playing us this season, drawing both games, and try to take a bit of confidence from that.

“They can play and have good technical players, and when people are fighting for survival they always turn it up a notch, especially when it’s Celtic coming to town.”

Well, Celtic , too, are fighting.

And there’s an awful lot of things we are fighting against.

So today, I’m going to remind you, courtesy of colleague Hector Bandido, of a chap from yesteryear, who epitomised the fighting qualities needed today.

Legendary Patsy Gallacher born in Donegal today 1891.

Nicknamed the Mighty Atom, Patsy was regarded as the Jimmy Johnstone of his era and is considered by many historians  as the most talented player ever to play for Celtic.

Patsy played 464 times for Celtic and scored 192 goals. Not bad for a winger!

He’d have been 125 today, and probably still have been in better shape than  Derk Boerrigter

His attitude, summed up here, is exactly what we need now.

Instead of pinning the anti-Celtic stories on the Rugby Park dressing room wall, pin that up , and inspire the players.

Use inspiration from the past to inspire those in the present to create history for the future.

Finally, a wee word about Resolution 12, a series of articles about which have appeared on the site this week. Normally, the diary would comment on the articles were they written by someone else, and refer the reader to them.

However, as I put them together, it would be a little weird to say anything, except thanks to all who have helped to raise awareness of the issue. and thanks to all those who have emailed the SFA.

The hard work is just beginning though so your continued support is much appreciated.

Keep it going.

and thanks, again, not only from me but from those involved in pursuing the matter from the very beginning.

Moyes and MacKay can both do one. A pair of complete and utter failures.

One who refused to learn Spanish while managing a La Liga team and spent £45m in combined fees on Marouane Fellaini

The other who is a proven racist, sexist bigot.

But Ronny out aye?

Monti

Plum,
You going to pick up the gauntlet or not?
Malky Mackay does not interest me in the slightest but to describe Moyes as a failure is just wrong.
It didn’t work out for Moyes at Old Trafford and a number of results during his time were not good enough, not arguing against that, but there was also a bit of undermining of Moyes being done in the background by the likes of Giggs and his pals, this could not have helped.
When judging Moyes maybe you should consider his work at Goodison park, over a decade, which most certainly wasn’t a failure.
You don’t get offered the Manchester United job if you are a failure.
Of course, Louis van Gaal and £300,000,000 later is doing a much better job isn’t he?

Deila out? Fuck aye!

Who are the alternatives to Ronny then?

Lennon – Spat the dummy when his budget was reduced and ran off like a ginger Dick Whittington to earn his fortune in England

MacKay – Disgusting racist, sexist clown with a terrible style of football.

Moyes – Has somehow contrived to win bugger all in over a decade as a manager.

Monti

Plum,
Depends on how ambitious you want to be, let’s put it this way, if the board decided to put a team on the park worthy of the shirt, I think there would be a high number of excellent candidates for the job.

Martin O’neill, David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Gordon Strachan would be on my own personal wish list, I would be happy with any of them.
Also remember when you are criticising Moyes for not winning anything, remember he did take over a Man Utd side clearly in decline and when Giggs wasn’t shagging his brothers wife, he was undermining the new manager.

Your tragic one word reply suggests it is entirely true.

Away back to pretending that finishing fourth (twice) in England in over ten years is an achievement for a manager just because he has a tenuous link with Celtic.

If Ronny was called Ronny O’Deila and played 300 games for Celtic we’d need a spelunking team to retrieve you from his ringer.

Sorry, but David Moyes is 10 times the manager of Deila. People point to his supposed Man Utd failures but he worked wonders with Everton. Never had anywhere near the backing LVG has had and you could argue he done a better job and was unfortunate to get sacked.

Ronny on the other hand has been an embarrassing failure in Europe when we’re play below average opposition with 1/20th of our budget. Domestically? Not much better. We should be 20 points clear of Aberdeen. I don’t buy this ‘we’re not entitled to win every game’ patter that’s been spouted in the comments section of this site. Aberdeen struggled badly to put together 200k for Greg Tansey in January, while we can easily fork over a couple of million quid for a player no questions asked. Not good enough.

“supposed Man Utd failures” ?

Took over a team that won the league by 11 (ELEVEN) points and failed to make it into the champions league places. That is not a “supposed” failure.

What about his record at his next team? Won fewer than a quarter of his matches.

Now he wants to come to Celtic, blow the finances out of the water and play the worst brand of football that we could go for.

You obviously can’t read ya fanny, I said results weren’t good enough, did you read that bit?
Man Utd were in decline, I’m sure Fergie would agree the team could and should have been left in a far greater position than it was when he left.
If you can’t remember this or deliberately choosing to not mention these facts, then you are indeed a plum.
LVG? You having a fucking laugh?

I think all three names in the frame are poor choices. Moyes is used to big spending and by laying down that condition rules himself out. He has previously stated that his heart is in the premiership – the English version. Malky Mackay – no for so many reasons of competence and character. Neil Lennon, look for a job down south and spare yourself the bile and bigotry of coming back to Scotland. We have time to keep looking. In the meantime there is a manager and a team that need support to win the double and beat Johnny “basket of assets” while doing it.

Monti
Reply to  BroxburnBhoy

Moyes is used to big spending?
He built Everton up over a decade with a fraction of other clubs spending, this is a sign of a good manager in my book.
Some on here have their eyes wide shut when it comes to Moyes, it’s time to open those eyes.
We currently have a man in charge who is shite and will end up at Stromgodset or some other obscure shithole.
Moyes has proved he is an excellent manager in the top ( arguably) league in Europe, not Norway, not Finland, in England.

BroxburnBhoy

Hi Monti, he spent a total of 131m pounds managing Everton. He sold 112 million pounds worth of talent as well so in balance he spent 8m ++. 131m is a large number and I would suggest we are in a very different league in every sense of the word. He did well keeping Everton mostly mid table a few top ten finishes in a very competitive league. So yes he did a good job at Everton. The job here is different, dominate domestically and qualify to CL groups every year on a very limited budget. Deal with bigots and bile, deal with a system that is dead set against us. Any semblance of fairness out the door. Would he do better than Delia, probably and would he stay if he had one good season and was offered a job in England probably not.

Monti
Reply to  BroxburnBhoy

Broxburnbhoy,
I don’t give two fucks how much money he has or hasn’t spent, the point is he got Everton performing to a relatively high level, consistently punching above their weight, look at where Everton were before Moyes took over.
No one season wonder, no flash in the pan, just a consistent team getting better each season.
The argument some are puting up about him not winning anything is absolute shite, he was up against Arsenal, Chelsea, the two Manchester clubs and Liverpool, so winning things in England should not be expected.
I firmly believe Moyes would get our team and club fired up for the challenges ahead, I will stick to my conviction on this one.

Interesting suggestions as possible replacements for our current manager, assuming that he is going to be replaced. I know as much as anyone…..and that is zilch. However, I do not feel that it will be any of those suggested. These are all old school. The exception would be Lenny but I think it is unlikely that he would put himself and his close ones through that again, especially so soon.
Moyes is a good manager. He was set up to fail at MU…..who could follow Fergie in that job? Whoever directly replaced him was doomed to fail simply through comparison. Now the fans are so cheesed off that they will accept anyone that will give them some form of success. Conditions are now right for someone to thrive there. Macdonald, MON are yesterday’s news. The Board will not and should not be looking at them. What might change that is DD if he fancies MON for another go round. If that has happened then it will be MON the older. Should it be? IMHO, it should not. RD was a brave appointment by the Board. Correct type, wrong man! I hope they stick with their philosophy and appointment a young manager with fresh ideas that fit with the modern game. However, they may feel thst they had their fingers burnt with RD and go for a “safe” appointment that is good enough for the domestic game, but lacking in Europe. Where they should be looking is at young managers coming through the Scottish game and ditto in the Championship in England, plus leagues like the Dutch, Swiss or Czech.
You cannot go forward efficiently by looking backwards!

PS. I have an itchy, uncomfortable hunch that they may consider McInnes. He does not fit into any of the categories that I discussed above but he has achieved success. Could he be the Simineone of Scottish football?

I shall be shocked if I do not get a response to this!

Plum you list a very short list of candidates considering that there are 54 members of UEFA, if we concentrate solely on the top league in each country that’s around 600 managers not counting international managers or the rest of the world. Its not your job or mine to be familiar with their various abilities and qualifications but please don’t tell me that we have to have Ronnie because there is no alternative,
Out of that list of at least 600 managers the vast majority are being paid less than will be on offer at Parkhead, have wage and transfer budgets far smaller than those available to a Celtic manager to create a team to play for fewer fans all of which makes the Celtic post if/when it becomes available very desirable.
Therefore I would suggest that the line of thinking you seem to be following with your “Where are the alternatives to Ronnie? question is deeply flawed

Mike,

I see that MON the younger has signed a new 4 year contract with north iron, so cross him off the list. We are slowly narrowing this down.

I suspect that the wheels have already moved on this and a choice has been made. A short while ago another blog that may have the CEO’s ear and, perhaps, other body parts as well, was calling for patience and that we should wait until season end when we shall see what we shall see. Maybe I read too much into that but I think it was a coded message from a source that tends to echo messages from the club.

Could be totally wrong, of course, and I deny everything. Anyway I was only joking! Am I OK legally now?

Mike if DD is working through the prism of ‘bringing in an irish manager to move things forward’ then I fear for us as a club, ah really do. Ah don’t think DD has such constrained view of the modern gemm. Lets see, eh.

Bondi, I would not have a clue on who we would bring in,Rebus is right the names in the frame are gradually being reduced,
Yet all we can do is guess, listen to what is being hinted at by club insiders and make an educated guess,i have my own thoughts but wont share them, then when the decision is made i can say to myself thats what i thought and pat myself on the back, simples.
Have a guid yin the morra with the family,Happy ST PATRICKS day.

Why don’t we appoint craig white, huge hit with the fans!!! 5 year plan, get him driving the youth team bus for nothing and let him work his way up like warbie, would be good to see those finance boys go head to head, no chance warbi.

Q. If Dermot Desmond and the rest of the board decided to change direction and finance a new era, where we have a team on the park that has regained the fear factor, who would you like to see drive this at the helm?
Who would be your choice of manager and what is it that that is missing at the moment that can re- invigorate the club?

My first choice would be a return to Celtic of Martin O’Neill, with Roy Keane and Neil Lennon assisting him.

What would they install and introduce to Celtic? Passion.
They would bring fighting spirit, desire and a never say die attitude to the team, all the attributes and qualities that are synonymous with Celtic.
These three men would immediately impact on the club and I believe the fans would return to Celtic park in our droves.
There is no greater feeling in football than a full Celtic park, getting right behind the side and willing them on to victory.
It’s supposed to be entertaining and passionate, both of these elements are missing.
I don’t think we need to spend massive amounts of money to get into the CL, we just need three or four CL level experienced players who can walk into the team and bring on the quality young players I believe are here already.
A complete rethink by the board is desperately required, because it hasn’t and isn’t going to work under Deila.

Celtic need to get serious!

My first choice would be OOR Willie, with Desperate Dan as his number3, cos you would be no2.if the number fits wear it.

Oh ah think ah do know what am talking about Monti its simply such a prolific poster as you, some of your post are insightful, others spiteful you are leaning more to the latter these days. Its all a matter of opinion Monti. It would appear anyone with a different opinion to you is not deemed worthy of a respectful response; ie being called ‘a fanny’ this really does say more about you than others. Of course, that’s just ma opinion. In other words Monti..grow up and stop being so precious, you are is serious danger of becoming a bore, now that would be sad.

Bondibrian,
I called Plum a fanny because he is, also my little surfer troll, your fake moral high ground pish doesn’t wash, because you only pick up on my posts when there are other posts on here that can be quite unnecessary, personal and insulting, yet you don’t raise an eyebrow to them.
Which all considered, makes you also a fanny.
I stand firm that you have no clue in what you are talking about, there is no evidence to the contrary.
As for not accepting other people’s opinions, I find this odd because a number of my posts are asking posters for their opinions??

So as ‘ Bricktop ‘ would say ” Fuck off “!

He fell upon old vinegar hill an Irish volunteer,
Then raise the Harp of Erin, boys the flag we all revere,
we will fight and fall beneath its folds, like Irish Volunteers.
