Celtic Diary Wednesday February 24: Strong Leadership Required.

Confusion surrounds the current situation with James Forrest.

The Daily Record claims he has instructed his agent to find him a club in the south. Norwich and QPR, curiously exactly the same clubs who were listed when Gary Hooper wanted to move south, are the named sides.

This, according to the paper, is why he turned down the new contract.

Here we go again…

He hasn’t, he didn’t, and he doesn’t want to go anywhere.

Now, wouldn’t it be odd if Ronny Deila were to deny having actually said that Forrest had turned down a contract ?

The poor kids head must be fried. If i was him, I would instruct his agent to make a statement along the lines that due to all the “confusion”, he will not be commenting on his contract for six weeks to allow him to concentrate on winning the league and Cup with Celtic.

The problem here is that , in my eyes at least, is a much bigger one than whether or not Forrest stays.

As we know, the board, lets refer to it as Peter Lawwell for simplicity’s sake, decide on who gets paid what, and for how long. It appears they also decide on who comes into the team. As they decide on the value of a contract, then no matter how much the coach wants a certain player, its ultimately their decision if he gets him.

Or if they go. Rememebr Ciftci and Nesbitt on the bench, against Partick ? Twenty four hours later, they were sitting in their new digs….

Lets be honest. Lawwell, and undoubtedly his support act as well, are good at what they do. They are what we might call money men. They are not people men. They are not football men in the sense that it is their primary industry.

So therefore, they should not have so much of an influence.

Ronny Deila has made his name as a coach, and despite what you might think, he’s good at it. However, the position he is in requires considerable man management skills, which thus far he seems unable to show he has.

We have , at one end of the room, a board concerned with share prices, dividends and balancing the books, and at the other, a man charged with putting a product into the market place for the consumer.

Or , we have a man who wants to build a football team which plays attractive and entertaining football, who wants to win domestically and rebuild a reputation in Europe. And we have a boardroom which will not allow him to make the crucial purchases required to move the business to the next level.

What we don’t have is a manager who can move n=between the two and get the best out of both.

And the thing is, those who can do that, wouldn’t come to Glasgow to ply their trade. The board wouldn’t pay the going rate, and the major selling point of Celtic, to anyone in the football world, the support, is being largely disillusioned with the current set up, and is beginning to drift away.

Or stay in the pub because its raining.

In business, a company must have something that the customer wants. something that makes the man in the street decide thats where he wants to spend his money, and for too long this boardroom has taken the green pound for granted.

If the product is poor, then no matter how loyal the customer base, sooner or later they will shop elsewhere.

Empires always crumble from within, usually due to a lack of strong leadership , and thats whats happening now.

There is no communication between customer and provider. the company’s PR hovers between non existant and even more non existant, and mean while, the customer grows more and more disaffected.

From my own observations , in the press and in the room, the current stewards at Celtic believe that all will be better when the current incarnation from the other side of the river arrives back on the scene.

It isn’t going to work out that way. The board have completely misread the support on this one.

But then, they would.

They have no people skills.

Well, that turned out a lot more depressing than I intended it to, so we’d better start to liven things up.

If you thought our board were leading us a merry dance, how about this, from the original soccer sensei, Mark Warburton, who dragged Brentford from obscurity and breathed life into Scotlands newest club ?

Hang on, that augars well for the future of Scottish football as the Murray Park Marbels are currently struggling in the Development league, which means the other teams must be fantastic.

“I want our players to be challenged as much as possible to prepare for the first team.” said the the new football visionary.

After 19 games, with just three home wins, his “colts” are sitting in 8th place, out of 17.

Yeah, they’re ready to step up.

It would be churlish of me to suggest that for Second Rangers to scrap their B team, and make everyone else scrap theirs too, is because they cannot afford to run it.

After all, this is a club with a world wide support, who are willing to put money in at the drop of a magic hat, a multi millionaire owner with a war chest so big they can’t find a ship or a plane big enough to bring it over from south Africa yet.

In fact, they are sitting on a pile of money so big, they didn’t even have to sell any of their squad last month, which is the first thing a team in trouble financially would do, wouldn’t it ?

So it can’t be that….can it ?

When I say B team, incidentally, I mean the reserves, because technically, the new club, if clubs playing out of Ibrox were to be numbered alphabetically, the first team would be the B team.

The press, of course, won’t even enter into discussion over the possibilty that its merely a finacial issue. which is a shame, especially given the brave stance on immigration from the Daily Express, which not only condemns the influx of foreign parasites, but pictures one, who has an enormous family which is draining the benefit system,

However, there was something in the paper which means that maybe,  just maybe, there is a chance the game in Scotland might be turning towards a new policy where incompetence is dealt with severely, and the old order may also be going the way of Empires of the past..

SFA decide to axe Willie Collum over fears for whistler’s confidence after high-profile blunders in recent Premiership matches

Yeah, alright they mis-spelt competence, and used confidence, but the point is he’s been dropped for a while.

Hopefully, the pupils at the school he teaches won’t go out and buy several copies of the paper and paste story all over the school. Or the town, come to think of it. Kids can be cruel.

Collum has been more useless than usual, which is saying something, and he perhaps does need a breal to , er, refresh his memory on the basics.

Say, around thirty years or so.

News now, and this is a bit of an exclusive, on next seasons kit.

Designed in mind to help make it more difficult for opposition forwards to ease past our defenders, it looks like we’ve got a winner.

Right, your turn….

more like all of those books are the full list of EBT recipients!

Or: Warburton searches for and fails to find a book on legends from TRIFC. Reason being there are no legends, and the club is only 4 years old. And they are shite.

Or: Bomber brown continues to search for the deeds of the “ground I played for”.

I bet you’re the life of the party though Monti. Proselytising in your pished-soaked George By Asda jeans as alcoholic slevvers stain your chin while drunkenly slurring some insult about Ronny Deila and/or Peter Lawwell as though they’ve somehow personally wronged you.

Nice work with the diary today, Ralph.

If Jamesie doesn’t want to leave he needs to come out publicly to clarify.

Speaking of public – you are bang on re Celtic’s PR. It’s pathetic. Constantly allowing enemy forces to control the public agenda, often to the detriment of our own interests.

Unless the ‘board’ stand up to the corruption of the SFA and SPFL as regards Res 12 and the LNS abomination ‘the games a bogey’ and their legacy will be seen as, the board who put us to the back of the bus. An honest game, honestly governed. Is that too much to ask for in this day and age. Only my opinion. HH

Oh its only imagining now, Barry! Did you trip up doing that U turn? How many times have you been on here spouting about what the players really think because you are their mate and we are not? Ralph writes a humorous diary which is free of chat about how he is friends with the players or reminiscences about being allowed to sit with them. I mean, who could forget your imagined sources telling you that the Celtic manager was getting sacked…twice in one day? I don’t recall Ralph claiming to be the bestest supporter ever because he has been to more games than anyone else, do you? And just to finish, only an idiot such as yourself would believe that you either have to hate the Celtic manger or you love Peter £1M Lawell…and you say you won’t go back until Celtic approve your choice of manager and your choice of formation? Way to go Celtic “fan.”

Bgbhoy
Reply to  Whoriskey

I stand by the fact that he was due to be sacked. The problem was bringing in the man that they wanted mid season. And they have gambled that he would bring in 5 in a row this season. If you think that after Ross county and Aberdeen that they did not want to act then you leave in an alternate universe

Now onto your point about me and my ‘sources’ let me get one thing clear. I buzz off the fact my mate plays for Celtic. I live and breath the club, and I don’t enjoy anything more than going to the games and see us scoring a few goals a all round good performance. Now the difference between me and most fans at the moment is thanks to current situations I know why they haven’t played well. Or the reason for another poor performance. I know what is going on at the club and I’m worried. I’m worried we are sleep walking into the oblivion. That 10 In a row will not happen. And this is down to the way our club are treating there staff. It’s easy for you to give me abuse for saying things that go on and peoples feelings on the matter but I do it because I care and I want other fans to know exactly what is going wrong

Duncan…
This famous Anglo-Scottish surname derives from the pre 7th century Gaelic male given name “Donnchad”, related ultimately to “Donncatus”, a Celtic personal name of great antiquity. This is composed of the elements “donn”, meaning brown, and “cath”, – the warrior.

Some live up to their name in life whilst others through ignorance or whatever fail to do so.

Every time all the time.
There are those who talk about such things, there are those who fantasise about such things and then there are those who just do such things.
The Moniker is a reference point it has no substance, has no personality and therefore in reality is nothing.
I only use a Moniker to remain anonymous as my life outside of this medium is a totally separate thing.
You have used my full name on here previously in an effort to troll,we had a discussion the owner of the site interjected and you were told not to use it again.
Yet here you are trolling again bud.
I don’t mind banter,a bit of give and take because like you I am a big bhoy now and moe than capable of dealing with such things without reorting to trolling or any other sleekit underhand ways of gaining one upmanship?
I have quite willingly suggested binning my moniker and using my real name on here as I have nothing to hide.
I was advised by Ralph that there was no need and to carry on using the Moniker folk know me by on here.
You evidently for whatever reason take umbrage to the totally fictitious name Charlie Saiz?
God knows why it really has no relevance at all.

For me, no.

There won’t come a day when Forrest fulfills his potential in a Celtic jersey.

jintybhoy, i dont disagree with you, i think its the right time for both to part for the following reasons

1) the personal abuse he gets every game after a misplaced pass from the greatest support in the world

2) the management team have told him he is not rated (so why does ronny let the club offer him a 4 year deal?)

3) he only wants to play football and hes behind an 18 year old loan signing and a guy whos just been arrested for drink driving

4) fellow team mates are allowed to assualt him in full view of other teams and no action is taken

BGBhoy, I agree it’s time for him to move on, but I don’t subscribe to the JF as victim routine. Your questions could equally read:
(1) Why should the fans not boo or abuse a player who is one of a group who sit in the dressing room laughing at the fans, drip feed gossip via thier mates to undermine the manager, and generally show no respect to the fans or club?
(2) Is Ronny trying to do the kid a favour by hinting that he will punt him at some point, but has allowed the board to offer a new contract to get a bigger transfer fee?
(3) He’s behind a guy who is better than him (albeit on loan) and a guy who appears to have bought into the managers ways of working, or at least doesn’t drip feed gossip to his mates to undermine the manager and doesn’t sit around laughing about the manager with other players who equally may find themselves on the way out of the club? Or even just behind guys who train and play better than he does?
(4) I’m inclined to give you that one, but we don’t actually know what caused the incident, and it may just be a “griffiths is worth more to the team than JF, so let’s let it lie” in the way the Larsson – McKinley headbutt incident was handled. Favouratism, yes, but happens at every football club.
I’ve said before, I have nothing against the guy, I just don’t think he works hard enough for the team out of possession. And if what BGBhoy has said before is true, I am sceptical about the respect/loyalty he has toward the club and the fans. So I agree, it’s time to part ways and it’s regrettable that it is on a sour note for JF.

You clearly know more and feel James is hard done by, which is fine, but don’t be expecting us to wholeheartedly support him on the basis of cryptic statements you make. P.R.your having a laugh, the club seems to be run by an individual who makes all the decitions, just shy of picking the team.Fergus made one or two minor decisitions wrongly including the appointment of Jock Brown as Director of fitba. It seems that we now have our own D.of fitba. To much power for one individual me thinks.

The board are waiting to see how many season books are snapped up for next season. My money is on at least an extra 8,000 as the ‘best supporters in the world’ welcome back their second team to Celtic Park. Sad but true. The numbers will be increased regardless of the quality of football on offer. The greatest fans who cannot get it together for 3pm kick-offs on a Saturday will return for the hate-fests that s are so dearly missed. For me, I will not return, as I feel betrayed by those at the club who have done nothing about corruption and want ‘them’ back more than ‘they’do. I will not pay to watch them defile Celtic Park.

I don’t read the MSM but I saw a picture when I went past in work, one of them had a picture of Izzy suggesting he was leaving in the summer as well?
I’m surprised that very little chat on here has touched on Izzy; he (like James) may not go down as a Celtic legend but he has put in some really good years of consistent service, allowing for a period of time where he was recovering from a serious injury. I’ll always have a place in my heart for the guy, who honestly looked like he loved being here and tried his best in every game. Perhaps because we appear to have a replacement who looks better we’ve already said farewell to him, but I’d struggle to name a more consistent player for us in the past five years or so. Defensively found out (in Europe particularly) at times I suppose, but always willing to support an attack and one of the better crossers of a ball. Perhaps my favourite moment as a lung bursting run followed by a pinpoint cross to Hooper to score in a 3-0 game at Paradise? Might not have a correct recollection but I’m sure some will know the game I’m referring to.
Would keep as experienced cover for our new left back hero at least.

Ah well, looks like the monitor isn’t a fan of my Izzy post.
As for James is it beyond the realms of fantasy that his agent has informed him what the offer is, he’s cordially thanked the club, and is taking his time to consider any potential alternatives should he feel his career could be best served elsewhere? Truth be told I’m glad there’s no rash statements in the press from James or his agent, they are conducting business with the club and we’ll be told when they conclude that business. In the meantime the manager has informed us regarding the status of one of our players, let’s move on until there is something to report.

As one who is undecided about Ronnie, I’d say what would convince me would be a clear plan about what would happen then. Who would (realistically) replace him? What would our strategy be with the new man (do we stick with current, albeit scattergun, approach of buying the “best” young Scottish players, supplemented by our own youths and some foreign players/projects, or do we move onto a new strategy and if so what does that look like)? What we would expect of the new guy over 1;3;5 years? What that means for our style f football, based on the new man’s experience/track record?
The first question is the most important, everything else flows from that. Otherwise, for the ‘oysters’ it could be a case of winning the war and losing the peace…

Spiderman,
Evening.
I can only speak for myself but I want to see a Celtic team on the park that plays with a real hunger and appetite for the game…minimum.
I believe firmly that if we had seen clear progress in the side over the last year, we would get behind Deila.
The fans aren’t daft, we can see what is wrong, the performances and results in Europe are an absolute embarrasment, we are getting worse in Europe not better.
The fans can agree and disagree about where we are as a team, that’s fine, but you have Peter Lawwell coming out with this, ” We are a Champions league club” and ” we try to be world class in everything we do” shite.
Where is the evidence, Peter, that we are ” world class in what we are doing “?
Where is the evidence that ” we are a Champions league club “?
Is it in bringing Champions league level players to the club?
Is it in bringing external money streams into the club that can allow us to pay higher transfer fees and wages on players who can deliver in the Champions league?
Is it attracting a manager who is respected throughout Britain and the continent who can attract a certain standard of player?
Is it paying all our staff a wage higher than the minimum wage to help their families have a greater standard of life?
Those few things I’ve listed would fall into the ” CL club ” and ” world class in what we do ” category!
The fans are being fed crumbs by the board, scoffed at by the board and treated with utter contempt by the board.
Celtic shouldn’t be Downsizing, we should be aiming a lot higher! HH

Spidey100

Reply to  Monti

Monti, can’t disagree with any of that to be honest. I think we’re a victim of circumstance around transfer fees and wages (ie inflation of those, driven mostly be Sky money in England) but that aside I agree – I want attractive football, commitment drive and passion. I want us to pay the living wage (it’s a travesty that it will take the Tories introducing a (reduced) living wage to force our club to pay staff more). I want us to be winning the Champions League – not gonna happen but I’d settle for somewhere between being tough to beat and holding our own.
Above all, I want a clear plan on recruitment – some players will be bought to sell on (it’s the difference between profit and loss at the moment and with the Coop loan looming, will remain so) but I want us to be strategic about it – we all knew Virgil and Denayer were off this summer – why weren’t Jozo and Erik in last year in preparation for that? Look at the squad, pick players who will form the core of the team (Brown; Gordon; Jozo; Erik; Tierney; Griff; Christie; Allan) for the next two years, then build around that. Underneath that, have guys being developed as natural replacements for when Jozo/Erik move on. Hardly rocket science – have the replacement in place before you sell.
I’d equally apply the same to the manager – the current guy doesn’t enthuse me at all. But do you trust the board to get the next appointment right? Or will we end up with another inexperienced guy learning his trade (Tom Boyd?) or a fans favourite that doesn’t work out (a la Mowbrey)?
Effectively it boils down to – is Dermot interested enough to get involved in the appointment (MON; WGS; Lenny) or is he content to leave it to Lawell (Mowbrey; Ronnie)?
So like many I’m on the fence – prepared to be enthused by an alternative candidate, but suspect we’ll be disappointed with how it ends up. So that’s why I will not jump on board the out bus yet, but I am at the bus stop should the right bus come along.

Bloody hell! Monti I sent you a longer reply which is lost in the ether. Basically, I said I don’t disagree with any of what you said, but the reason I am not in Ronnie out mode is because I worry about what’s next. Specifically, whether Desmond is interested enough to get involved (MON; WGS; Lenny) or Lawell (Mowbrey; Ronnie)? If not, I don’t think things will get any better. Some might think anything would be better – I disagree (Collins; Kennedy; anyone?).
So I am not on the out bus yet, but certainly at the bus stop should the right bus be on the horizon!

Monti the only and the one and only thing “world class” about Celtic is the support,we through the years have allowed ourselves to be treated as muck it is the same to-day,we have nobody else to blame,we have never presented a united front to them and they have and do still pick us off, they invite chosen ones up for tea and coffee with PL knowing it splits the ranks, this is a tried and trusted tactic throughout history,we are easy meat.

Monti, great post again. We the Cellic supporters seem to like being the victim.
What sickened me was knowing that the SFA have shafted us for years,20k turned up at Hamdump to watch the recent semi final.Surely that was the day to BHOYCOT,given what we know of their complicity with the DEED club,it would not have impacted massively on the club and would have been a kick in the balls to the bigoted SFA.

Spidey,
Cheers!
I think we are close to bottoming out now, the support is dwindling and the fans are watching a shadow of a Celtic side on the park.
I see Deila talking about how much he likes plastic pitches?
For fuck sake min….somebody take him away!

I do think that Brendan is not far off the mark though. I was all for Ronnie leaving and think he may well do so (I think what we are seeing is Lawell’s attempt to shore up his man before Dermot gets involved – if Ralph’s second coming story is true, I think Lawell may find he’s in a difficult spot what with MON not rating him and Ronnie being his second solo appoinent (Mowbrey the first) which isn’t a great record).
However, I am now starting to think longer term we should back the manager. Part of this is, I think, because the out campaigning reminds me a bit of the tail end of Strachan’s time – it’s all footballs turgid, not developing, anyone else would be better. That turned out poorly, and the absence of a proper plan or suggestions as to who is next concerns me!

I’m not convinced Ronnie is the right man, but the whole situation reminds me of the tail end of Strachan’s time – turgid football, n

Hit the post button too early. Anyway in short it reminds me a bit of Strachan’s time – anyone but Strachan. And look how that turned out. We need a plan for what’s next – that’s what might make the waverers plump for out.

Spidey100 thanks for your reply and I can see the sense in your position, on a personal level I am just entirely scunnered with ronnies whole approach and find it inconceivable that a replacement would not bring about immediate improvement but as I say its just my opinion

Maryhillbhoy, I get that people are fed up with the poor quality fare on offer, the lack of development and the poor results in Europe and at home. I share that, especially the lack of development – the purple patch was this time last year and we have regressed considerably since then.
I agree that there are folk out there who could come in and improve things, but equally there are folk who would be no better and potentially much worse than what we have. I also have no confidence in the board to get the right person – I could see another inexperienced man (Tom Boyd perhaps) so we’re back to a guy learning the ropes, or a fan favourite (Alan Stubbs) who probably isn’t ready for it yet.
As I said to Monti earlier, I think we really have to hope Dermot is interested this time round. When he has been involved, we got MON, WGS and Lenny. When he hasn’t been, we got Barnes/Dalglish; Mowbray; and Ronnie.
I also think, based on no inside knowledge at all and really just a guess, that Lawell is trying to shore Ronnie up a bit, if only to deflect from his own failings. The signing of Erik and the Norwegian player, bringing in his own physios, suggests Ronnie has been given more latitude to do things his way. I reckon that’s probably as a result of the Dermot/MON/Keane story Ralph broke – if Dermot is planning this and is biding his time, I can’t see MON working under Lawell without big changes, which is bad news for PL. Much better for him to shore up Ronnie’s position and try to persuade Dermot to give him one more chance. If he qualifies for Champions League, PL is vindicated and it’s back to business as usual.

Maryhillbhoy, I get where your coming from – games are a chore to watch these days, and we seem to have regressed from our purple patch this time last year. Where I disagree is with your assertion that it’s inbelievable anyone couldn’t improve things – there’s someone out there and this board would find that person.
Really, the only way we’ll improve on our current position is if Dermot takes charge in the appointment of any new manager. When he’s interested, we get MON, WGS and Lenny. When he’s not, we get Barnes/Dalglish, Mowbray, and Ronny.

Spidey thanks for the reply can I re-iterate I can see your rationale and agree with most of it especially the need for TO Desmond to be more pro-active.
This summer should be an interesting time one way or the other as I genuinely feel a large part of the support will vocalise heir opposition to the possible Lawwell master-plan in a way not seen since the days of the od board

Forrest is the best wide player we have at the club. In comparison to GMS, Armstrong or whoever else you want to play there james is top of my list. He needs game time.
With regards Collum it’s long overdue that poor performance is punished, however we need clarity and transparency. The SFA need to come out and make the point. There is a sinister side to this though. He is the only referee who appears to have been punished and this after he has handed advantage to ourselves. Mclean gets the League cup semi-final after his horrendous performance in the Scottish semi-final and Thomson gets the other one probably in view of his performance at Pittodrie against us.
We need to put pressure on SFA to be more transparent with regards referee performance and selection for big games.
