A Picture That Sums Up Celtic’s Defence Under Ronny Deila

From last night. Aberdeen keeper has just launched a free kick 60 yards. This is the ‘shape’ of the Celtic team as they prepare to defend the ball.

To avoid confusion, here it is again:

im not surprised, when we have a midfield that consists of 2 diddies in brown and bitton, one of the most ineffectual CM pairing i can remember, what is it brown does apart from give away stupid fouls?

lustig is done we need a rb asap, and boyata is a diddy so our ability to defend a simple ball doesnt surprise me. The vast majority of our team dont posses a footballing brain and lack the intelligence required to play for us.

as for the 2 diddies from dundee, if there is a wrong choice to be made they 2 will always take it!!

Until the split, Aberdeen have 9 games. 3 home and 6 away! Aberdeen is much poorer on the road than at Pittodrie. We have the best away record in the league. We have 4 at home and 5 away. Last night was the last hurrah for the sheep and as good as it will get for them. We will again win the league by 10 points or more, then we will have a settled team for the CL qualifiers. We will qualify and not do badly in the CL and we will have some big nights against the usual suspects at Celtic Park. Be of good courage us Fenian bastards. Until our defence is finally sorted, our best central pairing appears to be Ambrose and Sviantchenko and we should stick with them for the remainder of the season. I am disturbed by the lack of fight/grit in our team though and thought we caved in too easily last night. Broonie, sort it in the dressing room. To get rid of Ronny now would be a panic move and disrupt our team and our ten in a row. Last night will prove to be our last bad night. We will win the rest of our matches. We are purged. Now,full steam ahead. HH

I’m not one to follow those who are quick to call for the manager’s head, particularly when the media headlines are being scripted by unscrupulous characters with a clear agenda…….bad Celtic, good Sevco.
However when I’m being told that the team is improving, despite the evidence before my eyes, I’m concerned.
When we sign 3 players from Dundee United, none of whom will improve on what we already have, It’s a concern.
When we sign a clearly unfit striker in Calton Cole, it’s a concern.
When we bring in another striker, Richards, who has caused trouble wherever he has been, and could easily have been sent off last night, it’s a concern.
When Boyata continues to get a game, it’s a concern.
When Simunovic appears to be made of glass, it’s a concern.
When we revert to lumping long balls it’s a concern.
When our corner and free kick set pieces are abysmal, it’s a concern.
When the opposition have a free kick or corner, it’s a concern.
When no definitive playing pattern is obvious, it’s a concern.
When the bench regularly appeal to be tactically inept it’s a concern.
When our board is complicit in not pushing for title stripping due to the actions of the cheating club from Govan it’s a concern.
When our board is complicit in the fraudulent UEFA licence awarded to Rangers in 2011 it’s a concern.

Apart from the above all ‘ s well.

Dan, stripping titles has nothing to do with the appeal.

Players contract details were not lodged with the SFA, hence the Bryson ‘ improperly registered’ sh*t.

Even if the EBT’S were legal the improper player were improperly registered…..every game any one of them played in should be awarded 3-0 to the opposition

I’m wi you Devoy

We had a season look this before when we kept having full backs injured. Having a settled, fit, back 4 spreads confidence, we’ve not had that this season yet.
I know it’s a difficult concept to grasp but when our team NEED support, where are ye’s?

Have followed bhoys for 60 years and it has been a rollercoaster but we should have learned some lessons by now.
Ronny is out of his depth, Lustig is defensively a weak link, Bitton chucked it against Ross County and ran into trouble multiple times at Aberdeen.
Central defensive pairing has been a disaster all season, no creativity in midfield. The surprise is that the league has not gone already!
Will never lose the faith but sorely tried at present!

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  Jimmy

And in those 60 years were we ever that bad and still sitting on top of the League after 24 games?
Lustig has been rank for nearly 3 years he’s an average FB who is injury prone.
Hence why he probably cost us nothing to acquire.
It seems to have escaped some on here Brown has been off form and injured this Season,
Commons injured
Johansen off form and injured
Armstrong off form
Mackay Steven off form.
These guys were crucial to the team performing well in the second half of last season and since we don’t have an abundance of quality at Celtic contrary to some who believe we do then this has caused us major issues this Season.
Did I mention losing our entire Central defence in the Summer and the effect that has had ?
Yet there we sit 3 point in front without even having slipped into 2nd gear.
These factors are being conveniently ignored by the Ronny oUt Brigade.

There it is, CS. We don’t have an abundance of talent but we should have. We, the paying punters, are paying handsomely to fund acquisitions and, if they’re not good enough, it’s the manager’s fault. If he’s delegating this responsibility to others, that’s still his fault.

If lots of players are off form, that’s also the manager’s fault. He’s got to get them back and performing as quickly as possible. If he can’t do that, he’s deficient.

If players are injured, that can often be the manager’s fault, too. The types of injuries we’re getting sniff an awful lot of overtraining to me. Forcing players to perform in different ways from their natural approaches, suggests crap coaching skills. Good coaches focus on strengths not on trying to eliminate weaknesses, KC’s never gonna be a tracking back kind of player. The manager’s got it wrong with training.

If there are no many problems with the manager’s approach and he can’t/won’t listen or change, what’s the answer? Give him another 6 months?

When Lenny left I thought it would be a goon idea to appoint a young, progressive continental coach who would bring fresh ideas to the club and the eventual appointment of Ronny Deila seemed to fit the bill. His thoughts on diet, being a 24-hour athlete etc made sense but then, after an abysmal showing in the Champions League qualifiers the doubts began to set in. For me the worst was realised when, after losing at home to Hamilton, said he could see “a slight improvement.” From then on I was convinced he was living in La La Land – and he’s still inhabiting it. Last night he just stood stock still on the touchline looking as if he hadn’t a clue what to do and hoping someone would come along and tell him. Well it would need to be the Tooth Fairy because Collins and Kennedy just sit there like dummies. I said here a while ago that this season could go tits up and nothing has convinced me otherwise. Change is needed NOW, not just to prevent further catastrophe this season, but also to make sure we have a decent crack at the CL qualifiers. Another failure to reach the group stages would be a financial disaster which could reverberate around the club for years. Only problem is who is there out there who is wiling – and able – to take on the task?

The most disappointing thing about the defense for me last night was not that we had went back to zonal marking, or players positional sense in open play, it was the distribution. Under NO pressure from the opposition, the defenders where just lumping aimless balls up the park, really disappointing and played right into the Dandy Dons hands. My heart sank, when I realized this was by design.

Iv’e been thinking about from last night and i’ts something I’ve never pondered before and it is, what is the ideal or optimum setup within the management team. It seems to me presently, that we have three very similar characters within it, is it not best to have differing coaches with characteristics that compliment each other. Good cop bad cop’, I’d also like to add, is it possible that we have 3 coaches in their mindset quite good with the stick (working them hard) than they are with the carrot (making training fun).

We have RD a proponent of the ‘pressing’ game, we have JC that is reportedly a proponent of the ‘possesion’ game, but we have no one who is s proponent of the ‘passing’ game. JK as I’m led to believe is the defensive couch, “if I was in charge”, I’d send JK back to the development squad to manage it and to learn how to set up a back 4. Harsh, maybe, but as we’ve seen with super salary, couching isn’t finishing school for management. Managers need to manage and making their mistakes out of the limelight.

I would be getting JC, to use every dirty trick he could think of, to get his pal John Hughes to come and be a part of the management team, with his remit being, to help RD and JC to get Celtic Football Club play the ‘Celtic Way’. I believe he is the last manager in the game whose proponent, is to play the game ‘The Celtic Way’. His ideas and training methods needs to be documented and put into practice for the future of this club. As well to the fact he is a great big guy and would bring a different ambiance to the management team.

Aberdeen have beat us twice in a season, once in the last 25 year, a quarter of a century, I welcome the competition. HH

The one thing I kept thinking about last night was Nir Biton talking recently about how he had sat down with Ronnie Deila and Ronnie had pointed out he had to step up his game and increase the number of forward passes in his game.

Watching him last night he was back to old self…sideways and backwards.
With the defence punting it and midfield and forwards being made of straw, I just sense they all look terrified.

As for Broonie doing that “Neymar” bump…just sad.

How can you tell, in that shambles, whether it’s zonal or man-to-man marking?

Good post Joe! I think concern is the right word and the Board need to have a discussion with Delia and his staff and share their concerns just as Delia and his staff need to share their concerns with the playing staff. Certainly he is close to being shown the door and that is fair in my view after losing two games which if we had won would have us in a final and 9 points clear. That is the stamp of winners. This team needs more heart and soul. The question is, is Delia the man to inspire them?

Cortes

For a management team supposedly emphasising fitness, the teams fielded have all the physical attributes of the cast of It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. Gloria McKay-Stevens in particular gets wafted off the ball at the slightest breath of wind, Boyata is a Cowardly Lion and Lustig is focused on auditions for the role of Capt Bellamy in the remake of Upstairs Downstairs. Kazim-Richards and Sviatchenko may be the first of a batch of sturdier harder players but they’ll be targeted by referees. The rest, Brown included, need to be much, much stronger on the park. If Bobby Murdoch and Bertie Auld etc knew that your first responsibility as a player is to win the right to play your superior football, why do the current much inferior journeymen think they just have to swan about like wannabe superstars to exhibit their underwhelming skills?

To be fair we were playing a back 3 at that time and were on the attack when the Dons keeper got the ball.

I would like to sees change in manager n coaches, but I would also like to see the greatest supporters in the world show up for the team when they need us most when any player puts on the Celtic jersey we should be there to let them and the board know what this means to us all lets us not be led by the SMSM we are Celtic supporters faithful thru n thru ,but we want improvement. We want better manager repay our faith give us what we deserve ,but in this bad time let us carry our team to the title

i am sorry o agree with the moronic media but Delilah,JC and JPK have been a disaster. overall we will probably win the league and possibly the cup
But and it is one big BUT. what about Europe, without qualification Celtic Football club could be relegated to the same level as the also runs of SCottish Football.
We have players ot on oan that would do better than the ones brought in
Yes think Henderson and Stokes, why Oh why have we brought in a disaster like Richards, why do we not have a player like Sammi that can pick up the high balls and knock them down to Griffs etc:c
I am sick to the teeth of he mediocrity brought in by the current custodians of a grand idea that is Celtic Football Club

Totally deluded, Andy Walker is just man enough to say what we all believe — Delia is out of his depth and should go! We are a laughing stock. I have never known a manager to not inspire a team at half time until now. That is his job surely. Aberdeen came out fighting the second half and we were hopeless. You can tell that McInnes inspired his team and Ronniw didn’t. Shocking for a manager.

HS, it just proves that they have absolutely no idea. I was talking to one of the players no more than 2 hours ago and he said that the players are absolutely bamboozled by the lack of planning, the lack of any motivation and the continual tampering with the line up.
I asked him what was said in the dressing room after the Ross County game and what were the repercussions. His reply was there were no raised voices, no arse kicking, nothing and very, very little said. It all seems to be acceptable to the coaching staff.

Conceded “40 goals in all competitions this season and already two more in the league than for last season’s entire Premiership campaign.”

A major problem is obvious then if that’s correct, especially given the fact that Celtic have scored more goals than nearest contenders Aberdeen. It’s the defense.

Simonuvich being injury prone hasn’t helped, Efe being disaster prone hasn’t helped, Boyota being too unwilling to get hurt hasn’t helped, Lustig playing at less than peak fitness hasn’t helped, Mulgrew out hasn’t helped, Brown out for periods hasn’t helped. What became evident during the Champions and League qualifiers and Europa League matches has continued into the domestic league as teams realize Celtic are vulnerable.

When was the last time Celtic made a really good come-back under Deila’s tenure?

I think other weaknesses are set pieces and one has to ask do we need to bring in a more experienced defense coach?
Deila doesn’t seem able to motivate players but could anyone motivate these players?

There’s possibly a contradiction in Deila’s signing policy – he buys domestic players from Dundee United, for example presumably thinking them good enough for Celtic yet he buys players from down south who haven’t really done too we’ll in terms of scoring down there yet presumably Deila thinks they can do better in the north’s inferior league. But if it’s inferior why buy players from there and expect them to take you into the Champions League? Is he deluded in thinking he can turn sow’s ears into silk purses?

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  iljas Baker

You are spot on regarding the defence (I have been saying this all season btw).
As for the signing policy…
Perhaps if the fans woke up to the fact our overseers have no interest in bringing in proven quality capable of Champions League but would rather bring in guys who are SPL level and players with potential then the bulk of them might not be expecting a silk purse from a sows ear?
Scott Brown was our last major investment t Celtic.
That was £4.5m 7 years ago.
Scott Brown would be lucky to get a game for Watford right now.

btw Ronny Delia has a specific type of player he wants it is the Board however that tell him if we can afford them or not.
Pretty sure if he had the option of Zlatan over Kazim Richards then Zlatan would be at Celtic Park?
We have to be realistic here and accept he has limitations ENFORCED on him by where we are at in the big scheme of things.
We are not a CL level Club we are an SPL Club with CL aspirations there’s a world of difference between the two.
