Celtic Diary Wednesday December 23: Keeping It in Perspective

Before we start, yes, a few posts have been removed.

Then I thought, fuck this, i’m not coming in from work and spending time deciding who is upsetting who, and should I allow this one, or that one. The rest of the Etims crew are probably the same.

So its dead simple.

Stop calling each other names, this is a grown up site, and start behaving like grown ups.

If you can’t play nice you won’t be allowed to play at all.

Actually , I was out visiting relatives last night, and amidst all the doom and gloom associated with this time of year, I’ve a wee uplifting story to tell. My wee nieces wee daughter was out doing her christmas shopping the other day with her dad, and saw a homeless lady sitting in the street.

Her Dad, lets call him John, because thats his name, explained that through no fault of her own, the lady had fallen on hard times, and there but for the grace of god, go all of us.

Upset at the thought that the lady had nothing , no-one and nowhere to go, she persuaded her dad to buy some crisps, a drink and a couple of other things which she humbly presented to the lady, and received gracious thanks.

When I went to see them last night, the wee lass went to get her piggy bank and asked me if I had some change I could give her as she was collecting for the Salvation Army.

You know something, I was so happy to see that there are still kids out there who get the true meaning of christmas, and are thinking of those less well off instead of themselves.

It made me feel a little better about things. Well done Ellie, we’re proud of you.

So did this;

CELTIC FC Foundation are completely overwhelmed and exceptionally proud to confirm the wonderful success of our 2015 Christmas Appeal.

A remarkable total of over £110,000 has been raised in less than two months through the collective effort of so many people including supporters, the Club, players, Directors, Trustees, partners, sponsors and funders.

As well as direct donations, we held four key fundraising initiatives this year:

– Our inaugural Celtic Sleep Out on Saturday, November 14.
– The Ghirls for Good Ladies Lunch on Saturday, December 12.
– Our annual bucket collection on Saturday, December 19.
– An eBay Christmas Appeal auction.

The backing we received in every area has been just magnificent.

Thanks to your incredible support, in honour of our founding fathers, we have now assisted a total of 250 local families who are faced with poverty and hardship. Santa will now visit those children and keep the magic alive. They will enjoy the kind of Christmas most of us take for granted.

The money has been spread amongst several charities and individuals, full details here..Celtic charity News  and no doubt the papers and the tv will be praising the foundation and the support for all their efforts.

Peter Lawwell even came out from protective custody  to add;

“Celtic FC Foundation’s Christmas Appeal resonates so closely with the origins of our Club, and supporters should be rightly proud of their magnificent efforts.

“It’s wonderful to see so many individuals and groups coming together to help those who are struggling this Christmas time.

“That unique sense of unity and purpose is extraordinary and supporters should never underestimate the difference they have made.”

Shall we keep with a nice christmassy theme ?

Everyone still feeling pleasantly disposed towards one another ?

Good, then we’ll continue…

Whats that christmas song, you know-“there won’t be snow in Africa this christmas” ? Well, there won’t be any food, cures for endemic diseases or peace either, but I’m sure it’s the lack of snow thats getting them down.

Thats my point, its all about perspective.

Like the homeless lady mentioned above, christmas is a time for being thankful for what you have, and not rueing what you don’t.

Which reminds me, of someone else having a particularly difficult time this  christmas, and I wonder if you could offer some thoughts and prayers for her, as she attempts to muddle through a problem which is becoming all too commonplace these days

Poor Esther. My heart goes out to her, as I can’t reach her with my boot.

Perspective. Lets keep things in perspective, like  this on line petition, apparently set up by a Celtic fan, calling for the removal of Ronny Deila, which is now being dealt with by internal security.

And Scott Brown had a few words to say as well.

“It’s very harsh. We are top of the league, we are a point clear of Aberdeen, who are having a good season.

“We are in both cups and yeah, we were disappointed with Europe but there is nothing we can do about that.

“We just have to concentrate on the three tournaments that we are in.

“We know we aren’t playing the best but you go through patches like this and the fans’ support is vital.

“They are brilliant, they support us week in, week out home and away. They give us 100 per cent and we give the same on the park.

“It just didn’t happen the other day against Motherwell.

But we will bounce back from that and this is when you see what a team is all about.

“You use your squad, you use your players and the manager will do that wisely.

“He will get the best out of the bunch of lads that is there just now.”

Manager Deila chipped in as well, and he seemed very rational about it;

“I follow football all the time and I have seen this before. There are always ups, very high and very low, it’s never something in between. But if you see the overall situation when you are leading the league and into everything. I cannot understand everything is so unbelievably bad.

“It’s about getting clicks on the internet and it’s about selling newspapers, because it is unbelievable.

“It just shows how crazy it is because there is so much emotion, so much focus around football nowadays.

“There are hundreds of media and everybody needs a story and everybody gets caught into this and it affects everything.

“It affects the players, it affects the club and we need to stay calm inside. That is the most important thing. We need to be together and that’s what I feel. I feel united with the players and with the staff and the people in the club.

“Yes we have challenges that we need to do better but when we stay united and are going forward then we can do it.

“We have not played well in the last two games but every team goes through periods like this. You have to see the whole picture. We hadn’t lost in the league since September, now we have to get back on track and we have been very good at bouncing back from a bad result in the past.”

Welcome to Glasgow.

Where turning a drama into a crisis into a catastrophe is a national pastime.

Keep it in perspective.

Mind you, he’s right about the media. They do need their stories.

Here at Etims if we haven’t got any , we just make some up. Same with our opinions. They aren’t worth any more than anyone elses, and we don’t pretend otherwise.

But at last we’re honest about it. The red tops and the radio still like to pretend they are telling the truth, and that they have opinions that count.

As does the Irish Post, which noting that everything else that can be criticised about the club has been criticised,  found an unusual stick to beat us with;

THANKFULLY, Celtic’s official Christmas advert for their merchandise superstore hasn’t made it to terrestrial television this festive season.

Instead it can be seen on the club’s own internet channel Celtic TV and, quite frankly, we’re glad that’s as far as it’s gone, because it’s certainly no Coca-Cola advert.

On the other hand, it’s so bad it’s actually quite amusing, and thanks to YouTube you can judge it for yourself. Have a look at Celtic captain Scott Brown’s acting skills in the video above.

Yes, they do need their stories. We hear at least three papers are going to run with another exclusive, as stories circulate that a prominent Celtic player didn’t leave his bins out for collection the other day, and will now have to wait for the New Year for it to be taken.

And finally, can I just mention Jimmy Hill, the tv pundit who passed away this week. He was a man who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. As a player, a manager and latterly a television expert, he may well have upset a few people, even featuring in a popular ditty amongst the Tartan Army, where they completely misjudged him, claiming he was aloof.

He was anything but, and leaves behind a remarkable legacy, probably having had more influence on the game than any other individual.:

  • Born in Balham, London, on 22 July 1928
  • Played as a forward for Brentford and Fulham
  • As chairman of Professional Footballers’ Association led the campaign to abolish the maximum wage, which was scrapped in January 1961
  • Became Coventry City manager, leading the club to two promotions before leaving for broadcast work with ITV in 1967
  • Presented Match of the Day for 16 years from 1973
  • Returned to Coventry as managing director in 1975, later becoming chairman
  • Made Highfield Road the first all-seater football stadium in the UK
  • Credited with introducing three points for a win instead of two

He’ll be laid to rest at the family plot on Easter Island .

We haven’t had a caption competition for a while, so here we go..

I’m not suggesting people should change their opinions but in the spirit of Christmas could posters put aside the debate for two days starting tomorrow? Even the British & German soldiers were able to do it in the 1st WW and have a game of football.

Don’t know what everyone could talk about though. I’ve almost forgotten what the comments were all about before the Ronny in/out campaign. 🙂

Seems the message isnt getting through and the insults are again in full swing. Charlie may have a drinking problem and his comments may come across as lacking guile due to being pished but have a heart . Its xmas

As for the petition a massive 200 hundred signatures. Hardly a class action . Its starting to make me feel sick. Put it in perspective we are tiop of the league . Sevco are in the division below …a treble is on the cards . We mostly have all our faculties and a roof over our heads. On a personal note i have a daughter in hospital with a schizoid psychotic disorder beautiful girl with lityle insight of who shr is ive been derailed by a cunt of an ex but i wish her well (do i fuck )
Hamnering each other isnt the way forward .

Ive spent time in hospital myself due to emotional abuse from abovementioned cunt and havr found some pleasure from watching our football team. But our sense of entitlement of where the club should be is embarassing. Wear it !!! I think the point ralph is making is about inclusion especially at this time of year. Some comments on here beggar belief and im not a newcomer ive sourced this site for years now and have nust summoned the courage up recently to post.

Not after pity here but endless negativity and personal attacks dont get you anywhere . Life is good you could be a montrose supporter or dare i say it one of them . But at the end of the day we are all fucking people regardless of creed religion or colour .

Which thanks to a certain member on here revelling that is now probably common knowledge.
Seems kinda pointless having a nameless moniker if someone then takes it upon them self to put a real name to it?
So much for privacy eh.

Think we need more than ryan christie to placate thr masses. If brown is injured long term a solid ecperienced midfielder leader type player should be sourced and signed. A quality central back and another striker if stokes doesnt get his act together . I think there would be a problem with pulling power if our infrastructure is in question re the unsureness of the current manager’s impending sacking as its all over the press.

No one would want to come to the club on a whim and find they are out of favour with a new manager. Its a self imposed crisis. The club reeks of instability.

Either fully get behind the guy or fuck him off

charlie

iancelt67ft

My reference to stokes as being the answer is that i think he is better than ciftci or cole
The manager just doesnt like him
Ive played the game albeit at a much lower level but ive experienced coaches who have liked me or didnt. And its natural to go all inward and have a bad attitude because you feel victimised. My gut feeling tells me that this is what is happening with stokes.

So i dont think stokes will feature regardless of his quality. Same thing happened with commons and griffiths but they forced the managers hand. Stokes didnt

So a new striker who fits into deilas plans most likely will be brought in hopefully one that will fit in. I may be wrong i often am

mike

Reply to  iancelt67ft

Agree with that Stoksey to start against Hearts.
I see that Age Hareid the now Ex Malmo Manager has taken over the Danish International Team,
vastley experienced 50 International caps for Norway, intelligent and could handle the gutter press, someone that new football inside out, better qualified than some of the pish mentioned on here,he wouldnt have cost a fortune either we missed a great oppertunity there
Well done Celtic.

He has won 8 Titles as a Manager in 30 years.
4 League Titles in 3 Countries
4 Cups in 2 Countries
Ronny Deila sorry the much maligned Ronny Deila has won in 7 years
2 League Titles in 2 Countries
2 Cups in 2 Countries
So in effect half the success gained in less than quarter of the time in Management.
Make of that what you will.

Keep it going Charlie, you forgot to mention that he pumped the much maligned Ronny in the C.L. on a fraction of his budget, out thought him and outplayed him after the first half hour, every comment he made, about Celtics fitness levels (even without chips) and that Molde would pump him was true.
Thats what i made of Age, and no i am not his agent, just an admirer and respect his opinion on football related matters.

Charlie Saiz

Reply to  mike

Yet another comparing budgets.
Our best players in recent years have cost us next to fuck all.
Gordon free
Lustig Free
Mulgrew free
Matthews free
Ledley free
Wanyama 800k
Bitton 700k
Commons 300k

Our wages are steeper and we pay more for the same level of player as they do in Scandinavia.
We do not buy top quality we buy average to good with a view to improving them.
In Europe if we have injuries to 2 or 3 key men then we become a very average side.
Now factor in losing our Central Defence then factor in a poor Lustig a poor Izzy a poor Broonie and a very poor Johansen then that average European side we are then becomes poor by our own standards.
He’s no genius a monkey could see where our frailties lay it’s been well documented mike.

Have had this conversation with Monti 2 weeks ago ,why would you want a manager whose team got pumped in the groups and ended up bottom is he any better than Ronny ,no and he is about 40 years older too . If we do not have any realistic alternatives leave Ronny alone and get behind him and the team ,we have a league and two cups to win.☘☘☘

Eh, because he got his team into the C,L.
Merely pointing out to all the posters that there are alternatives to David Moyes,Brendan Rogers et. al. that wouldnt cost a fortune and that know fitba.

Hi Mike , not having a go but just noted that Malmo finished the season in fifth place in Sweden and did not qualify for Europe next year . Is it any wonder there manager has left and is now the new National manager for Norway. By the way Morten Weighorst is tipped to take over from him .
The point I am making is that although he qualified for the ECL where is the success in finishing last and completely out of Europe the following season . Now that would be a reason to sack Ronny but why would you replace him with someone who is a total failure?

Dan,
hes the new Danish manager,he has 50 caps for Norway and at 62 he is not in the first flush of youth. However he is vastly experienced and his knowledge of football is second to none, otherwise why would the Danes appoint him manager.
Thats hardly failure,my own view is that C.L. entry would help the club raise much needed funds to strengthen the team.

Ok Mike I got that badly wrong in Norway/Denmark and I know where you are coming from about the money but unless RD and the team get this domestic season wrong I believe

As I have said before until Ronny and this team make a complete a— of the domestics stay with them that is what is known as supporting your team .If he does not win the treble or at least a double this season that is what I consider will be going backwards ,then it is time to start asking questions but not now. Some people starting to act like the Orcs on here Charlie as indicated in the piece above . Seeking and searching for ‘The Haters’ Take what people say at face value under whatever name they wish to use and as long as it is legal (whatever that means now) then argue your point but there is no need to dig into people origins.I f that continues this site is dead meat.☘☘☘

‘Dig into peoples origins’…WTF.
I was not digging into anybodies origins and if you are inferring racist undertones to point score, then you are a fucking arsehole.
I was accused incorrectly, of running multiple identities by CS and I was raging. My own background is Italian on my fathers side and great grandparents from Kilkenny.
So stop the holier than thou finger pointing you condescending twat.

The origins I was referring to were only in the context of User names and real names Andy. Racial background s did not even enter my mind and I certainly would not post anything on any forum which was remotely racist .☘☘☘

I agree Dan. I’m Half Scottish, half American (whatever that really means because it doesn’t mean Hopi or Chakta) from Aberdeen, who was brought up in an Aberdeen supporting household. I got sick and tired of hearing about 1982 all of the time and got really pissed off at my uncle coming into our living room the “louns” (our TV was huge for the 80s) and changing the channel to watch Aberdeen pass the ball backwards and between defenders for 90mins. One day I decided flock that and said I was going to support Celtic ’83-84 season if I’m not mistaken. My support has never waivered and when I was old enough I was able to make trips down with fellow supporters. Now I live in Germany and pay my Celtic TV subscription and catch European matches however I can. Now if any of you think that makes me less of a supporter please let me know because I will no longer read your posts as it will be obvious to me that you are not Celtic.

andy if every Celtic fan in the World was to attend games we would need a Stadium the size of London pal take no notice of anyone who asks such things it’s a sure sign they are short of an actual life away from the game.

Ralph some very good balanced diaries recently. Can understand the frustration of the “Ronnie out brigade” After Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Molde (twice), second half c Malmo, too often. Yet I was at the San Siro, Ajax away(and even at home in terms of fight )Fenerbache and St.J were good for half an hour but the result was ours, so bottom lime I will persevere until the end of the season. No one seems to
think Lennon should come back, Moyes will believe he has st least one more chance at the big time, an affordable coach with s bit of a European pedigree might be Michael Laudrup.

Time will cure all, either way.Peace, good will and prosperity to you all. Be kind to those around you. I’ll take some mince pies around to the auld Sevco neighbour the morra. Like hell I will!

Wish me luck. I’ve just finished a biography of Bobby Evans, and I’m really pleased with it.

Unfortunately, tomorrow morning I’ll be in the Civic Hospital in Ottawa and undergoing an angiogram and/or open- heart surgery.

As I said, wish me luck – and for heaven’s sake, get behind the team.

Tom Campbell,
Did you do a book in the 80’s with Pat Woods, called ‘ The Glory and the dream ‘?
I loved this book and kept it for many a year.

Good luck to you and to your health!

Yes, we did, The title, suggested by Pat, comes from Wordsworth

Where is it fled, the visionary gleam,
Where is it noe, the glory and the dream?

Thank you for your good wishes. The triple-bypass is set for 27th December at the Heart (!) Institute.
