Celtic Diary Sunday November 15: Lord Livingston To Resign ?

After finding himself the target of much anger from the supporters of the club he directs, well, thats what directors do, I assume, Lord Livingston of Parkhead, who voted for an increase in hunger among children at the house of Lords, has attempted to defend his act.

“I would like to see changes to the tax credit proposal to ameliorate the impact of it. However, I voted against the motions as it is not the constitutional role of the unelected House of Lords to overturn the clear will of the elected House of Commons on a financial matter.”

Holding a peeled onion, the peer explained that he was only in government in the first place

“because I was prepared to serve (for nothing) as Trade Minister and gave up being CEO of BT to do so because I felt I could help create employment and economic growth for the UK by promoting exports and inward investment. I feel I had some impact. I had little history in politics and certainly no intent to be involved in government until the PM asked me to become trade minister.”

“Finally, I know a lot of Labour peers felt differently about the role of the House of Lords vote but interestingly they did not vote for the fatal motion which does suggest they knew that there was an issue. I am surprised to see so many people think the non-elected House of Lords should override the will of the Commons. To my mind the House of Lords insofar as it has any role should be a chamber that scrutinises and amends the details of laws.”

Er, the purpose of the House of Lords is to act as a check on the Lower House, according to www.parliament.co.uk

What does the House of Lords do?

The House of Lords is the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It works with the House of Commons to:

  • make laws
  • check and challenge the actions of the government, and
  • provide a forum of independent expertise

The House of Lords Chamber spends about 60% of its time on legislation; the other 40% is spent on scrutiny  questioning Government and debating issues and policy. Committee work takes place outside the Chamber.

So, you would think that when a bill is introduced that goes against his own feelings, he would vote with his conscience.

Apparently not.

On something as important as the welfare of the vulnerable in society, the man has expressed his opinion.

It is not an opinion which sits comfortably alongside his role as a director of Celtic FC.

The petition for his resignation has reached ten thousand or so.

If you haven’t already signed it, please let your feeling be known to the man who , in his defence of his actions in the House, claims to listen to the people.

Petition to Remove Lord Livingston

One wonders if he will go with the will of the people this time, and do the honourable thing.

Elsewhere, and the EBT did they cheat?/did they cheat a lot ? debate rumbles on, despite there not really being anything to debate.

They did it, and everyone knows they did it. all thats happening now is a damage limitation exercise, led by a compliant media, in the hope that we’ll all just forget about it and carry on, presumably with a strong Rangers entity in place to ensure we all live in some sort of footballing utopia.

With various articles outling the somewhat bizarre opinion such as  that they would have won anyway, they were won on the pitch and a whole load of other hastily thrown together nonsense, it was no surprise that Richard Gough, a former captain of the old club, said his piece yesterday.

Clamouring for an end to the “witch hunt ” aimed at Rangers old club and their unique style of remuneration, which involved the delaying of paying tax, for around fifty years or so, Gough introduced an imaginary scenario….

Can you imagine if it emerged in later years that Henrik Larsson had an EBT during that season?

It won’t, because he didn’t.

If it turned out the Swede — Celtic’s key player in that title triumph — was paid via a scheme that’s now infamous in Scottish football.

Surely “illegal ” , and not infamous ?

Following the logic of the real-life never-ending EBT row, I’d be due a league winner’s medal.

For me and all the rest of my Rangers team-mates, ten-in-a-row would suddenly be a reality.

No it wouldn’t, because you’d have lost the other nine.

You’d think I’d be delighted to see my name written into the history books, right?

Not as delighted as i will, with a little asterisk next to it explaining your team cheated.

Wrong. I would have no interest in that medal. I would have no interest in seeing Celtic stripped of that historic title.

That is the honest truth. It would mean nothing to me.

It wouldn’t matter if Wim Jansen’s entire Celtic squad had EBTs, they won it fair and square on the pitch.

Ah, but you see, the entire Celtic squad didn’t have EBTS, and therefore they did win it fair and square on the pitch.

Which the bold Riachard appears to have forgotten.

Gough recently returned froma trip overseas pitching for extra finance for the stricken new Ibrox entity. Rumour has it that the trip cost more than he raised, by some considerable distance.

If his sales pitch was as well thought out and precented as his “scenario ” above, it’s not too difficult to understand why he failed.

The press continue with their policy of deflection, and whataboutery, and it is all reminscent of the death of a similarly named club, with similarly named directors, just a few years ago.

Celtic’s response to all this, of course, was measured, calm, amd direct.

Whatever is going on behind closed doors, I think we can safely say that moves are afoot to finally put a stop to years of institutional favouritism, and if those responsible don’t walk away, then clubs and their supporters might.

This is the beginning of the end, and not the end of the beginning, as churchill would have said.

Thats if he was alive.

Actually, if he was alive, he’d probably say something like

“Oi, let me out of here “

Right, now here’s a picture to test you from years gone by, following on from Kenny Dalglish and Tom Rogic, the time travelling Tim in Fridays diary.

Name the Celts in the Scotland under 18 squad from 1982…

Thanks to Lisbon Lion for the picture.

Finally, one or two readers have mentioned the replies in the Diary veering away fro  talking about football or anything else raised that can be deemed relevant.

I’m quite sure that some of you little digs and in jokes are amusing for those involved, and no doubt great fun to partake in.

And I’m also sure there are other forums where that sort of discussion is welcome.

Have a look for them.

And we don’t do personal insults on here either.

( you have no idea how difficult it was not to add the word “muppets ” at the end of that sentence, but I managed. )

Churchill said a lot of things in his time that you seldom hear repeated now.
Like this for example:
“I do not admit… that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia… by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race… has come in and taken its place.”
Churchill to Palestine Royal Commission, 1937

Can you imagine Cameron coming out with that in present times?

On Livingston I don’t want anyone rail roaded out of Celtic by mob rule mentality to me it undermines the whole “A Club for all” mantra.
That’s why I won’t be signing it.

Charlie Saiz,
He might not be at Celtic park in a political sense, but the way he supported the tax cut measures, is against the clubs moral and social position.
So let’s say at worst, he has acted in a manner that has no connection with the Celtic family, that for me is a cause for concern.

Like I said earlier Charlie, he has made a decision that makes the most vulnerable in society worse off?

I’m for him going…..

The petition to ‘remove’ Ian Livingston is an affront to everything Celtic stands for. He has already explained why he voted with his party on this issue. I’ll take him at his word despite my revulsion for the proposed legislation.

Celtic is rightly seen as a Club open so ALL with no regard for Creed or lack of it, ethnicity, or political persuasion. Even SNP members are welcome. Let’s ditch this pseudo-facist attempt to railroad a valuable club servant because you don’t agree with his politics.

This would be a sad precedent to set at the whim of the politicos who frankly are becoming a pain in the bahookie.

Have argued in a similar vein since this whole non story broke. See my previous posts on this . On this premise we should have petitions against all SNP , Labour Lib Dem Directors fans etc etc. The only people then suitable for The Celtic Board are non politicised individuals ,try finding some ?

Very good Andy but that won’t be enough for the anti board brigade who post on this site . Remember Livingstone might well have all those characteristics but he is a Tory Lord who voted in line with his political leanings and we have a petition to have him removed. Tell me how you get people on The Board with no political slant.? Even Charie Saiz idea of Supporter Ownership is fraught with difficulties. The truth of this whole matter is that if the Team performs and gets results all this Board nonsense will disappear. Fickle lot football fans. or what.

Bob,
Are you familiar with Ferrero Rocher?

‘ Open to all ‘ is being manipulated by having cretins like Ian Livingston on Celtic’s board.
No matter how you try and give this fellow a glossy makeover, he HAS voted in favour of making the poorest in society, worse off!
Celtic were formed to give people something who otherwise had literally nothing.
Food in their bellies, clothes on their back and most importantly of all…HOPE for their future!

That was our clubs aim and hopefully still is, we are still handing food out to the needy, foodbanks are relied upon more now than at any time in recent history?
Has Ian Livingston had to use a foodbank?
Has he ever had to go hungry?
Has he ever felt the shame of having no money to give his family a better life?
Has he ever been without hope?

He wants the poorest to be worse off…go think about what type of person that is!

Bob, since when has not giving someone something that isn’t theirs “making the poorest in society, worse off”?

You can argue they should be given it, and more, and I’d probably agree with you, but you can’t argue you are making people poorer when it was never theirs to begin with.

You can argue we have an unfair allocation of resources and badly skewed priorities, but we do have a wealth redistribution system in place and the poorest are less poor because of it. Of course we could, and probably should, do more.

Livingstone is right in as much that the Lords are not expected to interfere in bills which involve finance. The real issue for all of us should be living with a system of government which has an upper chamber composed of unelected and in some cases hereditary people answerable to no one.

The Cha

Reply to  Southside

Again, not true, as it wasn’t a finance bill. I agree on the bigger picture of the unelectefd HoL, also the total hypocrisy of those that support and sit in it and then claim they can’t take part as its “undemocratic”.

Marty

Is he not correct in saying the lords check whether a bill is legal, and should have no say in whether they like it or not. Therefore a vote in favour was only a vote to state that it was legal to make the poor even poorer – it was not a vote in support of it.

To have a petition against someone for doing their job is shameful. Livingston didnt create this legislation, he wasnt elected to influence this legislation, he was chosen to double check its legality and thats it. We should be looking to attack those who created the legislation (the tories) and everyone who did not speak out when it went through commons (every MP).

If we try and remove everyone who has a different viewpoint from us we have sunk to a mentality that is more akin to the WATP brigade, than the Celtic i know.

Marty

Surely before people should be encouraged into signing a petition to remove someone from their job they should be clear on exactly why?
Livingston did not create this law, he had no part in its writing or presentation to the commons – that was the job of the tory government.
Livingston did not vote on whether it was appropriate, or use his position to open a wider discussion on child poverty – that was the job of our elected MPs.
His role was to check it was legal. Which he voted it was. As distasteful as it is, im willing to take livingston at his word that this legislation is legal.

To consider removing this man for doing his job does not seem right. To have a petition to force this through does not seem fitting for Celtic fans. To do it while blaming him for aspects that are nothing to do with him is verging on a WATP attitude(ie he may well have bern disgusted by the law but recognises his job requires himself to put his personal opinions aside – no different from a lawyer defending a criminal – he doesnt support the crime but recognises his role in a system of checks and balances). Our anger should be directed at the tory government or our elected MPs, not the house of lords – they are unelected specifically to avoid the risk of influence, they need to rise above their own opinions and vote on legal or illegal, much like a judge.

We are asking for someone to be removed from their job, because we perceive their views to be different from ours. His views might not be different, but rather than check, or take him at his word we are just going to demand he leaves our club.

Devoy45

The House of Lords should be abolished. No politician who believes in democracy should become a ‘Lord’ or sit there despite it being a nice wee money spinner for Labour politicians. I won’t sign the petition because Lord Livingston does not serve our club in that capacity and he probably has some business acumen which might help our club keep afloat. Our club has a strong political identity but it is supposed to be inclusive and our backs are broad enough to carry a few Tories. Hell, Di Canio was a fascist but I’d draw my line at fascism!

That is a good question Monti; even though I was in Seville I would still say my best day was beating them 6-2; perhaps it was the horror show of the previous season culminating in a 4-0 (going on 10-0) battering at their midden, but the win was so unexpected never mind being so emphatic. And it was a glorious day in the August sunshine. Back to pub after, lots of drinks with family and friends, an dlot sof singing….superb!!
As for the worst, probably helicopter Sunday and no title stripping will erase the pain of that time. I remember going to Hampden for the final the week after and not giving a toss despite getting the trophy.

Monti

Gerry,
Seville was such a fantastic experience for the Celtic supporters that I can’t put it down as a disappointment.
I remember sitting at the edge of the pool, in the park in San Sebastian on the Tuesday, looking up and seeing blue skies and palm trees, thinking what is going on? Are we going to do this?
I met Billy Mcneill there as well with Charlie and the bhoys. Brilliant.
6-2 does take some beating as being 3-0 up against them after 11 mins was the stuff of dreams.
The biggest disappointment for me though isn’t actually losing a game, it was seeing John Kennedy lying on the Hampden turf with his career over.
I think Kennedy would have been a captain of Celtic and Scotland for many years, still gutted! HH

On his Grace The Lord Of Parkhead. I’m entertained by the notion that we are open to all points of view and those views can be held even if they conflict with the ethos and original purpose of the club. Of course they cannot. if I am on the board of a company dedicated to vegetarianism and I vote in another capacity for a law to impose meat dishes on society, I compromise my belief system to the point where I would likely be called a hypocrite. Secondly if I use the excuse and say that the House I am a part of has no right to contradict the other elected house, then I give up on the courage of my convictions and I put forward a cowardly excuse for actually voting for what I actually believe. Imagine him voting with a labour government on renationalizing the railways for example. The same logic would apply and I think we all know how he would vote. So for a number of reasons his Grace has compromised his position at Celtic Park. His hypocritical ability to penalize the poor while serving on a Board with a mission to help the poor and his cowardly excuse on why he voted the way he did concerns my greatly about th character of this man. He should do the decent thing. I signed the petition.

BroxburnBhoy

The gist of my post was that Lord Parkhead is a hypocrite and too cowardly to vote based on his strength of conviction if his story is to be belived. That is cause for character concerns about this man. I for one would prefer that he was brave enough to say I voted the way I did because I believe in the policy and then I feel the need to resign from Celtic because they are trying to help those less well off which I really don’t believe in – my post was better this this one and that was the gist

Hi Monti like the daily ranger I’m a day late in replying but time difference etc.11 hours.no hun here, been a Celtic fan since a15 year old.i came late to the game.first match v Sparta Rotterdam 5-1.suffered through some really crap times early to mid sixties.worked in fairfields,a hotbed of hunnery.hun scarves everywhere but the first time I wore my Celtic scarf to work was threatened by somebody they would drop a bag of bolts on my head.got the bag for jumpin the wa’.best thing that happened to me.went to the caterpillar at tannochside, great job great money plenty of tims there.emigrated 1969 never looked back.oz the best country in the world.been back a couple of times it was as bad as I remembered.first time 1994 went to parkhied just in time to see the great Wayne biggins…not .could not believe how bad we were, shades of the early sixties.i follow the boys here on bein sports which took over from setanta two years ago.celtic’s form has been erratic to say the least since nfl quit but we live in hope.we should still be strong enough to do ten in a row at least but let’s not get blase about it.hopefully Ashley will serve the sfa their arse on a plate dave cockhead king.enough waffling from me come and see Tasmania a lot of similarities to Scotland but few Huns.map of tassie covered by female equivalent of budgie smugglers.tassie also known colloquially as the land of the abc…apples ,beer and c..t . Question:
If we lose to Ajax and Fenerbahce, going out with our tail between our legs, apart from bottom of the group, where does this leave us?

P.S. Don’t want to get into the old arguments about Deila though, I want him out because I believe the football club is big enough to do well in Scotland and compete in Europe, at the moment we are not competing.

If we lose these next two games, should we start again with a new manager? I would!

if we win the treble surely it would be wrong to sack the manager no ?? if we don’t win the treble I can see ronny getting the sack and someone else brought in. just my opinion of course

Selkirk,
Where I’m coming from is this, Celtic need the finances associated with European football in order to grow the team and the club.
Would you accept a treble at the cost of European football?
Is the domestic treble enough for the supporters?
Is Europe something to not bother with?

Ronny Deila this season is showing up badly in Europe, I would give up both domestics cups every season if we were winning the League and getting into the CL.

If European Football means making up the numbers in a second rate tournament, it may well not be worth bothering about.

Tom,
I agree, Celtic are a Champions league club, unfortunately at the moment we aren’t a Champions league team!
The team needs a few quality signings to bring on the best of the young players already here.

The Europa league isn’t to be sniffed at, but Thursday, Sunday football is a pain in the back side……or should that be pane!

Great news today..the G20 agree a massive increase in Airport Security…I mind Private Eye highlighting that’s why you had John Reid on the board back in his day, for those Airport Security contacts……you will be quids in now son!
