Looking Back, Through Supporters Eye’s

After the success of a recent thread where readers shared their memories of listening to the games on the radio, monti wants to take it a step further  . sorry it’s a bit late, but I’ve been busy-Ralph.

Morning fellow E-Tims, As I seem to be being portrayed as a bit of a moaning Noel Hunt, I thought I would break with tradition ( taking my Victor Meldreth hat and coat off)  and suggest a bit of fun. I would like other Tims to look back into their Celtic history archives and give us a memory or a news snippet regarding Celtic on today’s date in history? It might be fun….( Bah humbug)!

I’ll kick it off,  04/11/1982 Celtic beat Rangers (IL) 2-1 Paul McStay’s first trophy win in his debut season. Goals by Charlie Nicholas and a missile from Murdo Macleod. Not sure who scored for the Huns though I think it may have been Jim Bett. That’s Bett not to be confused by the other Bet, Ian Black. On the personal front, 04/11/1982 I was about 3 weeks away from being expelled at my High School ( I was a right cheeky bastard at school), the 3 weeks duly came round and out on my arse I found myself. There was probably a lot more happening with Celtic in 1982 ( I was 12)  but too much Stella Artois and Morgans n Diet coke have fucked my memory a bit, although I still seem to remember Mowbray and Gillespie together at the back ( ultra slow partnership).

So come on Tims, your Celtic memories from this day in Celtic history. HH

Of course, as this introductory post is a lttle late, we’ll start with todays date, the sixth of November. i’m sure there are happier ones than the one we’ve got this year

Remember the occasion very well. Was in the Celtic end with my lifelong pal Martin. It hosed in down from beginning of the match to the end, we started like a train and I was dreaming of a 5 or 6 goal horsing of the “Hun” but it kind of petered out and as you say it ended in a 2-1 victory. In the good old days you would have a carry oot! on the way to Hampden then squeeze into the Montford bar and take libations until you were mangled then onto the final. None of this seating pish! standing in the crowd singing your heart out in the pishing rain! no carry out in the ground anymore due to the 1980 final, another day I wont forget! but that is for another time. Class players in Charlie, Murdo, Provan, Danny, The Bear,TB ( God Bless Him) and not forgetting the “Rubber Man” aka Frank McGarvey, I thought the game was played on 4th December 82? Happy days when we had real Celtic men who would have died rather than give in on the field of play.

Been a bit distracted with work life recently so just caught the reference to radio memories relating to Celtic so apologies if I am going off piste and dragging the discussion in a different direction.
However, I have on tape ( reel to reel ) a recording of the Celtic- Rangers New Years Day derby at Celtic Park when we won 5-1 ( 1-0 down at half time on a snow/ ice covered pitch and Stevie Chalmers got a hat trick ). Think the date is 1/1/1965.
Charlie Gallagher and Bobby Murdoch, if memory serves me well , got the others.
Some tasty singing on that tape from the Celtic support which would not require current legislation to act against the singers. Must do so etching with that tape so Erie. My long term aim is to give it complete with tape recorder to the Celtic Museum.

The 1982 league cup final was indeed 4/12/82.

Ir was absolutey peeing down.

We went on the Glasgow Uni CSC bus to the game after they had organised a pre match rock against Rangers event in the QM.

Great day in a great year, got to see the Jam three times, should have been four but it clashed with the when its spring again, we’ll sing again, 2 1 in Amstedam game .

Beat the horribles three times that year, by one goal in each game. 2 1 at home in April 82, 3 2 in october 82 and the above league cup final. A fantastic year

Yes it was December rather than November and it was one of the wettest and coldest days you could imagine. It was pishing down, a mixture of sleet and rain and we attended the game in our strips. All the guys in the bus thought we were mad,but when they all got back to the bus soaked through, we got back to the bus we simply got the strips off and nice, dry clothes back on.
Myself and a couple of other lads went to the Feyenoord tournament that summer and witnessed one of the best games I’ve ever seen when we played the hosts in the final with Ruud Gullit showing just how sensational he was going to become.Tam Burns was absolutely outstanding in the both games against Austria Vienna on the Friday night and Feyenoord on the Sunday. Four or five weeks later, it was back to Amsterdam as Jvr says, for that never to be forgotten night in the Olympic Stadium.

On 7/11/1984, a Wednesday night, we played Rapid Vienna in the 2nd leg, home match to try to reach the quarter finals of the cup winners cup. Although we won the game 3-0, we had to replay game after someone threw an empty plastic bottle onto the pitch and a Vienna player feined injury. I remember this well as I had to miss the game cos my first daughter was being born that night….I’ve been telling her to this day that this is how I remember her birth date. I remember waving to all the fans’ buses as I walked home (there was a game on thesouth side that night too) and noticed that the blue-scarfed buses weren’t waving back.
