Celtic To Move Into Franchising ?

Monti has some thoughts on the Celtic plan for global expansion…..

It has been reported in the last couple of days that Celtic are looking at the possibility of having a franchise club in North America ( NASL)  and Asia.

This is something I have always wanted the Celtic board to pursue as this could unlock the revenue streams denied to us by a decent broadcasting deal.

Ironically, without Regan and Doncaster involved in negotiations, it would probably be worth more to the club than the current deal.

Some have said on here that Celtic is only a big club in Scotland, I think that is a lot of shite and I’ll use Sir Alex Ferguson as an example.

Prior to facing Celtic in the Champions league at Celtic park ( Nakamura)  Ferguson said

” Financially Manchester United are in a different planet from Celtic, both in terms of the EPL and the T.V. income that goes with that.

However, as a global fan Base Manchester United could not cope with Celtic”.

Look at that statement again ” Manchester United could not cope with Celtic “… that makes me proud to read that, it also makes me impatient for our board to get to work on tapping into these revenue streams.

After hearing Charles Green speak of the 500 million worldwide supporters that the old Ranger were supposed to have, maybe Celtic have been a little cautious about making such bold statements.

There is no denying, however, that a substantial support exists overseas, in places such as the United States, Canada and on the other side of the world , Australia and New Zealand. These are not isolated pockets. The North american Association of supporters clubs alone testifies to the interest in the club abroad.

By setting up a franchise, possibly in Boston or New York, there is an enormous potential to tap into third or fourth generation Irish, who are noted for their love of the old country.

Well, if we can’t get the money from television, its obvious we need to look elsewhere.

The Celtic Nation experiment in England failed, largely because the Carlisle base was perhaps a little to close to the real Celtic.

That wouldn’t be the case in the US, and although it would be seen as some as a pale imitation of the real thing, there’s a chance that it could also hbecome a home from home for the exiles. somewhere that they could meet up, in the way their ancestors did at the real Celtic park, to find like minded souls and forge new friendships.

All of this would raise money, which could be used to help Celtic reach its full potential

I want Celtic to reach that  potential in my lifetime, let’s rebuild the main stand, get a team on the park who can reach the Champions league quarter finals at least every year, the time has come to raise this club to where we belong.

So Desmond and Lawwell get your passports out and make this happen. HH!

It is Ralph and I appreciate the fact you have chosen to come out and voice your opinion on it.
Opinions are why we are all here opinions about Celtic primarily of course but also on other subjects.
I don’t come on here to discuss Celtic as an Ex squaddie I come here to talk about Celtic as lifelong fan.
If you take umbrage to that fine but like I say my private life away from football is exactly that.
Hence my stance on the Tory Director.
I don’t share his views but he’s entitled to them all the same.
As a 4th Generation Irish Scot who came to Glasgow in the mid 1880’s during what is now known as an Gorta Beag’ I have nothing to be ashamed of.
3 Generations all served this Country in some Capacity during that time and it was never an issue to any of them.
Even my Grandad Pat who drove into Berlin in a Tank fighting Nazi Germany.
He suffered terribly as a result but never regretted a moment of it.
Some folk talk about doing things others get off their arse and do it.
I fall under the latter just as the 3 Generations did before.
Hate me for it by all means I really could not give two fucks bud.
For what it is worth I believe in a United Ireland it never should have been split in the first place and the UK Government really should be handing control back.
Just like they have in New Zealand,Australia,Hong Kong,India and countless other Countries round the globe.
Again it has nothing to do with Celtic Fc but if you want a debate then fine fire away as they say.
Either way all the best bogbhoy I hope yer shite is a hedgehog 😉

Monti, these avenues are worth visiting, but I don’t see this as being the answer. Americans or Irish/Scots Americans want the real thing, with real players, not what would amount to a tribute act.
Breaking into the American market in any form of business is extremely complex and difficult and numbers would have to be crunched to ascertain any realistic viability.

Nothing ventured, definately worth a cost/benefit/analysis job.

Having said that, I have always thought we should tell the TV companies to GTF until they spend some real cash. I’m convinced Celtic would make more with 3 o clock Saturday KO’s.
I’d have my 2 season books back in a heartbeat, but bollox to paying a grand for 4 Saturday games a season.
Europa is also a pain in the Nads and that should be worked at as well, time we got OUR game back.

In terms of Asia I was disappointed we didn’t keep kicking on in Japan, especially after the success of Nakamura.
The interest in Nakamura was phenomenal from the Japanese and Celtic must have done well off the back of him.
If expanding our global reach to America, North America and Asia, helps finance a Celtic side that COULD become a CL regular side, then it has to be done.
Let’s grow our club, the Celtic family is a wonderful thing to have in your life, let’s take Walfrid’s mission to the world!

This is at least some vision from the Board like we have been asking for. There is a huge Irish and Scottish/Irish diaspora here in the United States and Canada. Branding a team that way would certainly gain it support. Boston, New York and Chicago are the obvious three places and they all have MLS teams at the moment. If I were Mr. Lawell I’d look at a partnership with the New England Revolution in Boston, owned by the Kraft family who also own the New England Patriots and one of those Fantasy football sites. I live in Boston and I am unable to find a place where I can buy a Celtic strip! I asked at the New Balance shop where I was buying some very snazzy training shoes clearly meant for a younger man and they had never heard of it!

Cannot blame anyone joining the army, navy or RAF, they are recruited via the school system. Many of th she young children have no other avenue open to them.
We live in an unequal society, and anyone that has Celtic values deserves respect.
The cannon fodder did not make policy, it was the so called leaders, remember Georges Square 1926, as well as tO Connell street in 1916.
For years the poor and the disenfranchised have been split into opposing sides, a trick every Empire employs.
Any how good result at Tyne Ashley, I thought Sparky’s booking was a joke!

I think thus could be a really good idea.while I can understand the comment that people want the real thing rather than a tribute act I would ask if a team wearing the hoops playing in say America was a conduit to players actually becoming full Celtic players would people not support them? There’s only so many places in the unders and the development squad, why not have coaches and teams in other countries developing playes by playing games in those countries? If there’s money to be made for ensuring the future development of Celtic over and above having this potential stream of players then all the better.

As a US based Tim, I really don’t think there’s money in the NASL. The average attendance (I hate the “attendance” conversation and don’t want to sound like a hun) in the NASL is about 5-6k a match which is less than the SPFL. MLS averages about 22k a match with almost 30% of tickets being FREE!

The average MLS franchise loses $7-10 million a year and that’s WITH a TV deal. The NASL does not have a TV deal.

Also, there is no shot at moving from the 2nd tier of US Soccer (NASL) to the top tier (MLS) because there is no promotion or relegation here.

That said, there is ONE reason why this might work…

Right now Celtic have been extremely aggressive in getting US soccer clubs to partner in order to start moving players towards the Celtic youth system. I’ve even hosted one of the trips for the club to invite my son’s club to join Celtic as a “partner club”. But, could you imagine what a parent would have to go through to move a kid from the US to Scotland to play in a youth academy? Whereas a US based side would give kids here the opportunity to play within the “Celtic Way” here in the US and then try to make the jump across the pond.

This may help unearth and develop the next big US star. And THAT would help drive interest in the club.

If you want to, you could head over to the Spreaker website and search for Hail Hail Media – We have a podcast (Smell the Glove Celtic Podcast – STG) made up of North American Tims and we discussed this issue at length last week.

just awee thought on charlie saiz we all make mistakes in life,on the revenue stream the american idea does deserve some merit as we are dieing on our feet with the traditional streams,we have no chance of breaking into England so it could be our our only chance to realize the finances to put us where we should be competing successfully in the champions league , a while back on the site i read a comment about sticking two fingers up at the splfl and doing our own broadcasting of the games without involving a third party, then all the clubs who have no love for us would be crying when nobody wants to watch the shite they serve up.

Monti, franchise a great idea. If thought through, what’s not to like?

Many Irish heroes served in the British Army, right up to now. Nothing wrong with being a squaddie. It was often the only ‘career’ path available to this country’s poorest. At least we could fight.
James Connolly, and a lot of the old Fenian brotherhood besides learned their skills there. I believe that auld Fenian John Devoy learned all his politics in the British Army, from first hand experience.
Like many on this site, I lost family members in the fight against fascism 1939-1945.
The trouble with honouring James Connolly in Edinburgh is the bigots who keep tearing down or defacing his memorial plaque.
By the way, I feel I’m missing a lot of the ‘back story’ on this website. Maybe just as well!

These remembrance day ‘ celebrations ‘ over at the rat pit is a disgrace, a fucking comedy show!
I have elder brothers who went into the army but I couldn’t do it, I wouldn’t want to do it..
.I couldn’t go to Ireland wearing their uniform and I’ll never wear a poppy!

Meanwhile back at the farm, The board must have done some research into the franchise thing because apparently talks have already taken place with the North American association, I find it quite exciting actually and looking forward to developments.
Our own t.v. Deal has always appealed to me, the Kilmarnocks of this world will miss us…shame that!
This bigoted wee country called Scotland will do nothing for James Connolly, because they don’t have the balls for it.
But they allow thousands of DOB to walk and disrupt our streets and towns every summer!

As a lifelong Celtic Supporter in my 7th decade and US resident / citizen of nearly 40 years I think this is worth a try. I believe there are 40 million plus Americans of Irish decent who are fiercly proud of their Irish heritage. Thats your potential market. It would take some doing though. First of all as soon as they hear Scotland there is a negative response as they know of Scotland’s involvement in the Irish Plantations. I always start by telling them it was the clever Irish who went to Scotland during the famine, Scotland being 11 miles by sea vs 3000 to New York. That alway brings a smile, an understanding and sometimes even a pint. However think about this, when a University football team in the Mid West, founded by French priests, clad in Navy Blue and gold, whose greatest coach was Norwegian, can call themselves “The Fighting Irish” what could Celtic do?

Brendan

Monti, great article. For once I’m with you all the way.

Charlie saiz – I tend to agree with your posts but would like to take an exception today. I’m sure you’ll be aware of this and merely used the term “famine” for convenience, however this term in relation to Ireland in the 1840’s and beyond is exclusively inaccurate and 100% Brit (auto spell won’t let this go without caps) propaganda.

During the second half of the 1800’s Ireland fed three quarters of the globe (empire as the books refer to it).

Im sure you’re well aware of policies of the day, of the failure of the potato crop alone, and the subsequent starvation, degradation and desperation that matches Syria today.

Not seeking to be disagreeable, but not correcting the use of “famine” means some of our younger readers might think it was an accident. Imagine that Ireland had a larger population in 1840 than it does today. That said, we wouldn’t have Celtic had it been different…

It was a continuation of this policy that led to the particular assignations writhin the Partition of Ireland – which same propaganda refers to as “treaty” .

If you read my post above Southside Tarriers Brendan you will see I was referring to the 1879 Famine which I believe is referred to as ” an Gorta Beag” The mini famine.
I am in no way plain g it down or deflecting any blame from anyone I was merely replying to Southsides post which suggested my Great Grandfather came over due to the earlier Great Famine an Gorta Mór in 1845-52.
Though obviously they being Farmers in Rathmullan would certainly have been affected by it at that time which is perhaps the main reason they headed for Glasgow at the onset of another in 1870’s.
Who could blame them.
My point was they came to Scotland for refuge and as a result hee I am talking about it because some dick took umbrage tome having served my Country.
My Country being Scotland now thanks to history.

As someone who lives in the US, for me personally I would love to follow a Celtic franchise team, playing in the hoops of course.
OK, its not actually Celtic but it would have enough ties for me to feel bonded. In Atlanta we have an MLS team starting in 2017, I already have some merchandise and plan on being a fan as I get to see live games with an interest. However, if there was a Celtic franchise team it would be a no brainer and I truly believe most Tims over here would lap it up.
I also believe we would grow that support from the yanks, I personally ran a CSC here in Atlanta and we ended up with quite a few Yank supporters because they loved the passion we showed and our history.

Good piece Monti

Hats off to you all love reading the banter.

With regards to the franchise… Other than raise our profile I don’t understand how we can make great amounts of money from this. The american club would have to be a real success at the very least, as I cannot see the fans over there accepting it as just a feeder club to the real thing. Also do we syphon off money from their TV deals and sponsorships etc?

Could some please explain how the financial side of it would work? As I am incapable and in awe of your knowledge.

Charlie Saiz, you don’t need to apologize for being a squaddie my man. Just as the dark side profile us all as fenians, Irish immigrants, papists etc etc, we have to remember the reality…we are a mixture, a variety, an assortment of faiths, colours, creeds and political beliefs.
I hate getting pigeon-holed by someone who discovers I’m a Celtic supporter. They think about the hun-made profile above and put me in that wee box.
Yes, I’m a Catholic (by birth, I had no say in the matter)
I have supported Celtic since I was a wee boy because of the football they played.
I am not pro IRA…but I recognise that Irish Catholics had a just cause,
The British government should have let Ireland be one independent country.
I don’t hate the British army, and I have had close family members who were in the army, navy.
I despair that we have allowed, in recent years especially, the huns to hijack the armed forces as their propaganda tool “look at us, we’re patriots not like them Catholic traitors”.
I couldn’t vote in the Independence referendum ‘cos I have been out of the country for so long, but I would have voted “No” to Independence…we should have stayed independent 300 years ago, but unfortunately the rich class made the decision to form the Union, based on financial and commercial gains for them. The world has changed too much, and we’re more secure defending an island with a combined army/navy/air-force….and I don’t trust the Scottish Nazi Party as far as I can spit…therefore, better the devil you know in my opinion.
So I find it ironic that while I form my opinions, not based on the team I support or religion, the knuckle dragging bigots on the dark side form their opinions about what’s best for Scotland based on one thing and one thing only…a Protestant Monarch reigning over them fenian b*stards. I find it ironic and amusing that if they had more than one brain cell each they would realize that an independent Scotland would favour them more than us, since the “Establishment” here is run mostly by them and for them.
In what other country in the world would you see that country’s own citizens manhandling the flag like the clowns did in Glasgow the day after the referendum?
Anyway, I was raised in a mixed family and never heard a bigoted word uttered by any them…plenty of great banter though.
I didn’t mean to ramble on so much, but I wanted to tell Charlie he has nothing to apologize for.

Good read as usual, I thoroughly enjoy the articles you post, it’s a pity that some have to resort to f’ing and blinding.

It would be interesting to find out the feelings on this from Celtic fans in these countries/Regions.
At the end of the day, it’s those supporters who will determine if this is a real goer..

Only really post on diary after european games when am pissed and raging after a bad night in Europe and come on for a drunken rant lol but I do read it daily and enjoy reading the comments especially Charlie’s even tho I don’t agree with his view on things sometimes but he speaks sense and is a intelligent guy with a great passion for our club.

Bogbhoy shame on you pal your comments regarding Charlie are piss poor, wtf is Charlie serving in the army got to do with him supporting celtic or posting on here, your attitude is that of a hun,

Am catholic and have Irish grandparents and republicain but a celtic supporter is a celtic supporter nothing else matters and that’s what makes our club special any man is welcome to supporter or club no matter what race or religion, Charlie’s a ex squaddie sound like a wean on the play ground.

Ronny showed them that his bite is worse than his roar!!! I’ve been waiting for him to get a bit tougher and ruthless and not be such a nice guy to everybody. They saw him as an easy mark…they wouldn’t have dared try it on with Fergie, Mourhino or Van Gaal….those guys don’t suffer fools lightly.
Now he has to transfer that to his team talks..”nae mair fekking slackin” (translated from the Norwegian!!!)
