Celtic Ease Through To The Quarter Finals

By Jack the Lad

An average performance from Celtic was enough to see them through to the League Cup Quarter Finals after a third round win over Raith Rovers.

Stefan Johansen scored late on to add to Kris Commons’ early strike to send the Hoops through 2-0 on the night.

Given the gulf in quality between the two sides, Deila opted to award starting berths to Nadir Ciftci, Calum McGregor, Kieran Tierney and Tyler Blackett, while the enigmatic Efe Ambrose started at centre back.

Normally I would have a lot to write in a Celtic match report, given our usual dominance over the rest of Scottish football. I mean, if we’re not thumping a team, or at least I hope that’s what the BBC commentary were trying to say, by 3 or 4 goals, we’re normally churning out a shite performance coupled with a few dodgy refereeing decisions which question the very integrity of Scottish football.

However, Wednesday’s game almost failed to produce any incident of note barring a couple of excellent individual goals by the Bhoys.

Indeed, it took 13 minutes of play before a shot on target was registered.

Wighton found himself on the end of a flicked on goal kick, but could only force Craig Gordon into a low save.

The Bhoys went on to dominate possession, but a series of square passes and lack of penetration restricted Deila’s men to strikes from distance, with McGregor’s shot on the twenty minute mark coming close to opening the scoring.

Coincidentally, it was through one of these long range strikes with which the hosts managed to open the scoring.

Commons found himself in acres of space 25 yards out from goal, and in trademark fashion, drilled a left footed strike into the bottom left hand corner passed the motionless Raith keeper. 1-0 to the men in green after half an hour.

The Bhoys upped the tempo, and almost immediately got a quick fire double. Aiden Tierney, searching for his first goal for the club, raced into the box and fired a left footed drive goal wards, but his shot was blocked by an outstanding sliding tackle, typifying the Raith performance.

Indeed, the Kirkcaldy outfit looked astute in defence, while Deila’s men were labour some and gradually turning the game into an arduous watch for the Parkhead crowd.

Rovers began to grow in confidence while the deficit remained at a single goal. The Bhoys failed to clear a throw in from the away side as the ball broke to Matthews, who really should have hit the back of the net with a free shot at goal.

Celtic looked to hit back 10 minutes later, as the impressive Tierney floated a delicate cross into the penalty area, but Ciftci could only loop his header over the bar.

With the game nearing a climax, Rovers went in search of a goal, but their desperation created space for the Celtic attack to exploit. GMS and Tom Rogic both had excellent chances to double the Hoops lead, but both seen their attempts whistle narrowly by the post.

Daly came close for Raith moments later, but he could only angle his shot over the bar from 8 yards out. A further period of Raith pressure resulted in a chance for Ryan McCord, but his shot went the same way of Daly’s.

Just as the feeling of inevitable collapse crept in, Stefan Johansen doubled the Hoops’ advantage.

A Celtic counter attack found Johansen on the halfway line with virtually an empty opposition half to run into. The Norwegian skipped passed a Raith defender, before composing himself to slot coolly into the bottom corner. 2-0 to the Hoops, game over.

A boring performance from Deila’s men but a win nonetheless against a resilient Raith side. Tierney in particular impressed, looking defensively astute and equally adept going forward, while both Ambrose and Blackett looked very comfortable. Nadir Ciftci got some much needed game time and put in a decent shift, but still needs a few goals under his belt to get the ball rolling. Overall, a lot of positives to take out of the game. Potential opponents for the next round include Hibs, Hearts, Dundee Utd (surely not again!), Morton, Inverness, Ross County and the conquerors of a measly tin pot club in the pits of Scottish football, St Johnstone.

Three very decent results on the bounce suggest that our season is finally getting underway. Up next for the Bhoys are the Jam Tarts, who after an incredible start to the league campaign have been less than convincing in recent games. Defeats to Accies and Aberdeen have somewhat derailed the Edinburgh outfit but a late win at Kilmarnock last night will have restored some confidence.

Given the almost mythical 3 o’clock Saturday kick off we should expect a good crowd to be up for a great game of football.

ETims POTM – Saidy Janko. A class above.

Excellent workmanlike performance with a second string team. I think the game of Saturday comes into the “big game” definition. I’ll be pleased to see us put Hearts to the sword. This is a team we beat easily last season when they were so dominant in the Championship. I hope to see more of the same. More laughs from Sevco when their deluded manager thought that a 3-1 drubbing at home, in which he was outthought and outplayed, was not a gulf in class, simply bad luck. It could have been 8-1 by all accounts and still he talks about how the new team could compete in the Premier. Olympic standard delusion.

Good to see mcgregor back in the side last night , wasn’t so long ago the wee man was playing well attacking on the right hand side , scoring important goals in Europe and if memory serves me right getting a scotland call up. Think he’s due a wee run as he offers more of a goal threat than Forrest. Anyone agree

Jack

I am becoming the late pensioner too often for comfort. It is a little worrying when sample long brown boxes are being brought round every day. However, given the dearth of comments today, I felt I ought to say something even out of sympathy. One thing I will say is thank you for the summary. After a rather mundane match I think it was a real labour of devotion to ETims and deserves recognition.

I have only listened to the match on CTV and I got the impression it was a typical early round cup drag. I am not so sure it is so much the second stream team as the draining of enthusiasm that steers these games into the doldrums. No matter the reason, it is commonplace in every league in global football. For me that means anyone criticising last night’s performance is oblivious of the history of early round cup matches between top and lower ranked teams. The only time such games rise above the dose-off level is when there is a shock result such as that on Tuesday night on the south side. That seems to raise the temperature, especially in BBC studios, way above the level of comatose. For us it was more than anything about getting through and we did comfortably if not excitedly but that is what has pretty well become the norm in these games. Be happy about that. It could have been – and in the past sure has been – a shock!

Thanks again for standing in for Ralph and being prepared to carry out the mundane tasks rather than seek the limelight like some with their Dairies or Diaries or whatever they want to call their daily opinionated productions 🙂

Managed to finally get a stream yesterday and saw the match (minus first 15-20 minutes). Considering all the changes, especially the young lads, I think we played well within ourselves and were pretty comfortable. If we had won 5-0 nobody would have been ecstatic or praising the team anyway “‘cos it wis only Raith”. File it under satisfactory result. I’m already looking past the Hearts match to Fenerbache..that’s gonna be a different kettle of fish. A good victory could set us up for a charge to the knock out rounds..it’s gonna be a key match, as will the next one and the next one of course.
You see Monti…every cloud has a silver lining, you’ve just got to look for it!! HH

Good report on a poor game, but a victory at least and with two really good goals.
Nice to see both young full-backs (Tierney and Janko) look so comfortable.
Not nice we could’ve easily lost two goals to throw-ins, one from either side of the park before Jo closed the door.
Onwards and upwards and at least we wont need to suffer Sevco any time soon.
Better we never had to see them again, ever, and that remains a distinct possibility.

Will somebody at Celtic TV take Tom Boyd aside and tell him that it is totally unnecessary ( and probably grammatically incorrect ) to say the phrase ” at this moment in time ” almost 100 times during every match commentary !
Over the past few years this appears to be his stock phrase whenever he is co-commentating or being interviewed and I can only imagine from the number of times he repeats it that he thinks it makes him sound profound.
Sorry Tom, I think you are a great Celt, but please ditch the phrase.

Delbhoy. Either you have been sampling too much of what Amsterdam has to offer or you have a major problem with alcohol suggesting cal mcgregor is more of a threat than James… Now I think Callum is a decent player but miles behind jf in terms of ability. Notice all the James haters going quiet recently.

Of course I wish McGregor all all the best as I would any Celt and I try my hardest to get behind any player without too much criticism, but (there is always a but) I think he has peaked and should maybe be moved on. Too many poor performances.

James Forrest along with Samaras carried Celtic for roughly 6 weeks in Lennys first full year in Management I seem to recall.
We had a horrendous injury crisis that resulted in a full month of chopping and changing which in turn resulted in a poor start to the Season allowing Rangers to get an early lead.
Both the aforementioned players particularly Forrest upped their game and more or less single handedly got us back on track with some brilliant performances.
However subsequently he then got injured again and his troubles in that aspect started.
McGregor has yet to achieve that sot of Level at Celtic though I gather at County on loan he put in some match winning perfomances in his time there scoring fairly regularly from midfield.
McGregor initially made an impact in Europe scoring 3 goals fairly quickly and this is where I think when you draw a comparison Delbhoy has a point.
McGregor has been on occasion effective.
If both players were on their game I think Forrest is the better player but I also think they are two different style of player.
One comfortable on the wings the other more suited playing through the middle.
I suppose it’s great we have 3/4 decent young players coming through now at once rather than just the one who we ae pinning all our hopes on?

As I’ve made abundantly clear on many occasions, on numerous sites, I’m no backer of bean-counters, lawyers, and the myriad mis-named ‘respectable businessmen’ who permeate football today.
They’re NOT fans. They’re just parasites. After a ‘quick buck’.
That shower have insinuated themselves into football and they’re far from welcome in most fans’ minds. I don’t know one real football fan who would have them.
Anyway, for some reason your post put me in mind of a wee incident in Partick many years ago.
A guy had insinuated himself into company in a Partick bar.
Like Mr. Lawwell, he wasn’t very welcome, but no-one said anything. In due course, whoever’s round it was duly went to the bar, leaving the unwelcome guest out of the round. He brought drinks back for everyone else. The unwelcome guest then asked “where’s mine ?” He was told, in good old Partick fashion, “don’t worry pal, you’ll be gettin’ yours shortly”.
Well, PL has burnt a lot of bridges with the fans.
I believe he’s generally (perhaps universally) unwelcome.
I also believe he’ll be “gettin’ his shortly”.
HH
PS The guy in Partick (sensibly) walked before he was pushed.
I doubt PTL will do the same, but, BF, he should.
