Celtic Diary Wednesday September 9: Young Forward Attracting Attention

Maybe the real reason that Celtic didn’t sign a second striker-Nadir Ciftci was the first-in the transfer window was that there’s a young fellow about to be given a shot at breaking through the ranks.

On current form, Aiden Nebitt could well be making his debut very soon. Although usually a winger, he keeps scoring goals…

It’s not since the days of Charlie Nicholas has curiousity about a promising new goalscorer been so intense. Nesbitt scored the winner against Dundee in a development game at Cappielow yesterday, as the young Celts came from behind to secure a 2-1 win.

It was his third goal in four games, which immediately thrusts him into contention, having proved that he knows where the goals are, putting him in a different category to some of the other forwards.

Sure, he’s young, but he’s already doing at least one thing reminiscent of another great Celtic forward;

And a whole host of others.

Mor interestingly, it appears the club are keeping his presence a secret from any interested English clubs who might be thinking of doing a “Feruz ” on him. This is what “Soccerbase “, part of the Racing Post network, have on him;

Games played by Aidan Nesbitt in 2015/2016

Aidan Nesbitt has not played any matches in 2015/2016

Quite right , too.

Although the official website didn’t seem to be on message with that in their match report;

Nesbitt the difference as Young Celts down Dundee

Which, considering the others in the team, is no mean feat…

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Breslin, Kelleher, McCart, Tierney; Thomson (Hill 64), McGregor; Nesbitt, Allan, Stokes; Ciftci

Like everyone else, except maybe hack Gordon Waddell, I’d prefer kids to get a crack at the big time.

Nesbitt’s shot might not be too far away.

His coach Tommy McIntyre seems to think so as well;

“He’s always had talent He was out for a period of time and he’s come back stronger and has been a fantastic player for us.

“You can see what he gives you and I thought he was fantastic tonight and deservedly scored the winning goal.

“The players help him and he has a lot to live up to playing in that environment with the first-team but it’s great how the first-team players are and how they look after the younger players. But it’s also important for the young players to stand up and be noticed.

“I thought he took the game by the scruff of the neck at times and he wasn’t the only one. A lot of the young ones did really well and guys like Nesbitt and Kieran Tierney were outstanding.”

Speaking of strikers, for most of us it was a little bit of a mystery why Leigh Griffiths wasn’t given a run out for scotland when they needed a goal against Germany, or why he didn’t start against Georgia when instead, for some reason, Steven fletcher was given the chance to add to his paltry career scoring record.

Mark McGhee, who would be washing dishes in a motorway cafe if it wasn’t for his friendship with Gordon Strachan, bumbled a response;

“Leigh is an option and has become more of an option this season. We’ve been impressed with the work Celtic have done.

I saw him a while ago and some of the things they were asking him to do were right. He wasn’t doing them. I remember speaking to Chris McCart at Celtic last Christmas about Leigh and made an observation that every time the ball was coming towards the box Leigh was running away.

He was either running to the back post or if it came to one place, he’d be at another. They seem to have reversed that. He’s running towards where the ball is going and finding himself in better areas with better scoring positions.

So, he’s doing what he was asked, and scoring goals….

At some point we’ll benefit but at this point Gordon judged Fletcher is still ahead of him. But he’s getting closer.

If I was a striker, and Steven Fletcher was judged to be “ahead of me ” I’d want to be washing dishes in a motorway cafe.

Fletcher not getting a goal is not the be all and end all. We need a goal and if Fletcher keeps the ball and gets us a goal some other way that’s fine.

If Fletcher could get more goals that would be great for him and great for us but I don’t think we should get hung up on that because he does make a contribution and if you are talking about guys like Kris Boyd or Jordan Rhodes, they are fantastic finishers but they might not link play the way Fletch would, or even Chris, to get us up the field and keep possession.

Goals win games. Not possession, not holding the ball up, and not linking the play.

He’ll make a huge contribution without scoring goals, so we shouldn’t get too carried away.”

He’d make a bigger contribution if he wasn’t fucking playing.

I suppose when the camera cut to the vacant stares from the three, during the Georgia  game and we saw three great minds pondering what to do next the writing was on the wall;

One of them even forgot his trousers.

Still, there’s a parody  opportunity waiting for someone who writes for Only An Excuse if they ever decide to include characters from post 1990.

The Evening Times “understands ” that Scott Brown may be rested as he isn’t fully fit. For the Ibrox based paper to understand anything is quite an achievement, but it’s interesting that they have picked up on a number of murmurs that all is not well with Brown, who has been below par for the last couple of games.

 Combined the the heavy knock he took a couple of weeks ago, maybe it would be prudent to give him a break until the Ajax game, where he will be needed if Celts are to make any impression on this group.

Come to think of it, maybe Stefan johansen, who has also been complaining of a poorly leg, presumably to deflect attention away from the fact that he’s only been using it to run around aimlessly with, and maybe utilise the plethora of midfielders at the club for the upcoming game against Aberdeen.

 Ahead of the Pittodrie clash, we asked an expert what he thought, and he told us what he ” facking fort.”

 “It all looks a bit tasty ap norf wiv plenty of claret on offer if the lahds start to mix it up a bit. Know wot I mean ? Fackin get in. Sorted. “

He’ll be editing the Daily Record before long.

There was a bit of discussion  ( No, Danny, leave it out mate. he’s not worth it. You can go now.  you need to practise your cliches in time for tonights Eastenders. ) in the replies to the Diary yesterday as to just how Celtic should approach the trip to the hill of dung. Which is just the name of the ground translated from the Gaelic, and not where the MSM get their stories, so for what it’s worth, here’s my thoughts.

 The system, which a few of us would like to see altered now and then, won’t be altered. All the players, from senior to the foetus squad, play the same way. That’s what probably helped to defeat Dundee united more than anything else, as everyone knew what they were doing, and unusually, went out and did it.

 Gordon, Janko, Boyata , Mulgrew, Izaguirre, Rogic, Biton, Forrest, Commons, Mackay Steven, Griffiths. With Ciftci and Scott Allan getting a run out , and Efe Ambrose taking the place of whichever defender looks likely to make the biggest arse of it.

That’s of Stuart Armstrong and Mikael Lustig don’t make it. If they do, then the big Swede goes to right back, and Forrest gets a wee break to allow Armstrong back in.

Meanwhile, in Ayrshire, the twenty first century is here, as crowds gather for the unveiling of a new horseless carriage in Kilwinning

If you want a more detailed run down of why Rangers are not the same club as the one plying it’s trade as the one at ibrox , then have a look at this. Calmly and rationally, the Hostile Monkey provides sensible and easy to explain to a thickie reasons to put a stop to all those silly arguments you get when you point out to someone from the darkside why they are supporting a different club, in fact, why they are paying for a different club.

Hostile Monkey. The same club myth Debunked

which ties in nicely with the picture evidence from this site;

sahses to ashes in pictures

The picture yesterday, here it is again, because you will want another look at it when you realise that it is Gordon Strachan signing for Aberdeen, with then manager Billy McNeill doing his best to ignore the beard. Seriously, if I had ginger hair, the last thing I’d do is grow it all over my face as well.

 Right, obviously this game isn’t tomorrow, but in what year did this price list apply ?

Oh, and on what is a historic day, congratulations to Queen Elizabeth the Second for making it into the record books.

No chance of Aidan doing a “Feruz”.
I know him.Playing for the Celtic first team is his dream.He will be on the bench soon for Ronny’s team.Furthermore,his Dad goes everywhere following Celtic,and doesn’t miss a game.He would not let Aidan leave.
Although he plays as a winger,it’s so he can cut in and have shots at goal.He is a good finisher.
He prefers playing behind the striker.
Aidan will get his chance,and is definitely one to watch.
Nothing better than a young Celtic fan,living the dream,and playing for the team he loves.

I think Lindsay and Tierney will both make the grade at Celtic.
Tony Watt had the ability and the killer instincts of Nicholas just not the mental capacity to screw the nut and get on with it.
Still think he will become a quality striker in the future.

Have to say , Charlie, Watt wasn’t in the same league as your namesake.We had all been told about this kid ( Nicholas) , in the reserves , who was going to be a superstar.
From day one ,we saw it wasn’t just hype ; that this guy was genuinely special.
Only McStay comes close to him for pure natural talent.
If he’d stayed longer , he’d have been another Dalglish.
I’m afraid all the boys who’ve followed , (excepting maybe McGeady), have been pale imitations, Watt included.
Feruz may have been the next “great” ; the pre-1st team hype being similar to Nicholas’s , but it wasn’t to be.
I have seen the name of Calvin Millar being flagged up as one to watch; let’s hope !

Gerry Brittain, Mark Burchill, Simon Donnelly…..

I have seen it all before but hopefully a gem or two can be developed into first team regulars.

Hi,folks.

I just want to post my thanks to BGBHOY,a fine Ayrshire Tim-no,he’s not in that photo allegedly taken in Kilwinning-for helping out my mate in Belfast,and another in Cambodia with tickets for Amsterdam.

Absolute star,that man.

Aiden hadn’t figured on my radar before,I hope he becomes the next big thing up front. I used to think that a Celtic striker who couldnae quite hit twenty a season was a waste of a jersey.

Now I’d buy one wi his name on the back!

Thinking about Aberdeen on Saturday. We have several new signings but I don’t think this is the right game to blood them. We’re not spoiled for choice up front but everywhere else we are. I assume we’ll stick to the 4-2-3-1 setup:

Gordon
Lustig (if not fit, Janko) Boyata/Mulgrew/Izzy
Brown/Bitton
Forrest/Johansen/Commons
Griffiths

subs: Bailly/Ambrose/Armstrong/Rogic/Mackay-Steven/Rogic/Ciftci

The battle of the unbeatens. Hard fought 2-1 to the bhoys.
Questions:
Is Simunovic ready?
Is Blackett ready?
Is Lustig fit?
Is Armstrong fit?
Are Brown and Johansen match fit?
Is Ciftci ready to break his duck?
Can Commons keep up his usual good form versus The Sheep?
We can expect some heavy ‘tackles’ and lots of clogging and provocation. Can the match be refereed fairly allowing us to keep 11 men on the pitch?
Are Aberdeen as good as their unbeaten record?

Devoy,
You are aware it’s Pittodrie we are going to to play Aberdeen?
It isn’t the Nou Camp or the Vicente Calderón.

If Simunovic is fit I’d give him his debut without blinking, Aberdeen 1 Celtic 3!

Broonie is captain of his country. An immense honour and achievement for any individual in any sport. Whether you agree with internationals or not.

I’d love to see you tell him directly it was meaningless.

pulling players from the Scotland team is something walter smith used to do, if we go down this road we can expect to say goodbye to any cash we get when Parkhead is used instead of Hampden.

Devoy45

I agree with Deadhead. But it’s up to our players if they want to play internationals or not. Myself, I would be honoured to play for Celtic, not Scotland— and I bet many of our supporters feel the same. But we can’t speak for Broonie, Mulgrew or Forrest.

Forgot to say to Monti. I would never confuse the seagull shite of Pittodrie to the grand cathedral of Nou Camp. But don’t you feel a bit nervous about our team lately? Hey man, I hope you’re right about the 3-1 but my emerald coloured specs got cracked in Kilmarnock and Broken in Malmo.
I’ll maybe buy a new pair— after Saturday.

Devoy,
I wouldn’t say I felt nervous about the team at the moment, we aren’t settled defensively I agree but we will be fine.
The media and Derek Mcinnes talk a good game about Aberdeen, but we will see HH!

You suggest that if Armstrong is fit…then Forrest gets a wee break.
Why just a wee break…?? Why no an extended one…?
His performance the other night matched his usual one for us..
How he gets a game is beyond me.
And before any flak comes my way…
You’re wasting your time.
We’ve all got opinions…and that’s mine.
Everyone else,naturally,is entitled to theirs.

Monti, I like our team, Ronny and our general approach to the game. However, we need to bed in several new players and there might be glitches with that. Your 3-1 result sounds good to me. One bright part of our play is Griffiths. I’ve always rated him as a finisher and I think Aberdeen will find it hard to contain him. It is always hard to predict who Ronny will put on the pitch—and why! I’d like to see more of Allan, Blackett, Simunovic and Janko at left back. Blackett can also play there. We’re also at Ajax next week! All systems go.
