Celtic Diary Tuesday September 8; Scots Unique Amongst UK.

International football is a different game from that which we see every week at domestic level. Still, congratulations to Scotlands first artificially created club who managed a friendly against an artificially created country.

Scotland didn’t bow out of the euro’s last night, but most of the players can probably relax and start to look for bargains amongst the early booking offers for two week breaks next summer. Not surprising really, although the Scots did put up a fight, they were still comfortably beaten by a German side who didn’t really have to play at anywhere near their capability.

And as for Scotland, they had a keeper who insisted on palming the ball back into play, a defence who stood around admiring the German forwards, a midfield that kicked anything that moved, except the ball, and Steven Fletcher.

Celtic nearly bought him. whoever suggested this must be a fucking idiot, or a season book holder at Pittodrie. Or his agent.

For me, and probably countless others, when Scotland were chasing the game, and remarkably in with a shout of geting something out of it, Gordon Strachan, aided by Mark McGhee and Stuart McCall, ( I might be on the point of spotting the problem here ) decided that in form Leigh Griffiths should be left on the bench, and Chris Martin and someone called Ritchie were what was needed to swing the game.

Chris Martin plays for Derby, a team that’s not even sure of its pronunciation, and I haven’t got the faintest idea who the other bloke is.

Strachan talks a good game, but thats about it. Still, at least he watched the game in the same way we all watch Scotland games;

International football brings us all together, come to think of it, maybe thats what the better together campaign was all about, as all the other British regions will not only have a team out in France next summer, they could all end up topping their group. The idea, of course, is that Scots have someone to cheer for.

Frankly, the only person happy with the last two games was probably Paul Lambert…and he had to sit next to Neil McCann.

Mind you, perhaps everyone forgetting club loyalties for a moment and getting behind the national team isn’t such a bad idea.

Someone at the SFA ticket office obviously has a sense of humour. And he doesn’t like disabled fans either;

Or , knowing the Scots had decided to pick players such as Hutton, Hanley , Morrison and Fletcher, perhaps he thought he was doing them a favour by putting them behind the hoardings.

Wee Finlay didn’t think so.

This was his view;

The bottom one is hurting my eyes just looking at the picture. It must have been awful during the game.

Celtic supporters will be familiar with this, having been stuck behind these boards on more than one occasion. Time to ditch Hampden, and play internationals s around the country, picking venues to match the anticipated crowd. That way, the atmosphere will be better, and bigger nations will fear coming to Celtic Park, which can be an intimidating place for anyone to visit.

Use Murrayfield for cup finals, Edinburgh is, after all, the capital. Hampden just hasn’t got it anymore. Sell the place, and divide the money up between the clubs.

Incidentally, I know Sean Maloney scored, and Strachan likes having someone even shorter than him around in case he fancies hitting someone, but when he justifies picking some of the diddies he does by claiming they play in a more competitive league , it’s worth remembering that Maloney, who must at least be  in his forties, was blowing out of his arse after singing the national anthem. That’s because he has been playing kickball, in the USA.

Still, at least we can feel a little bit of comfort in knowing that Steven Fletcher isn’t at Celtic. Based on his performances in the last two games, Poland probably won’t bother with a defence, or a keeper, and even Gibraltar will fancy their chances of a clean sheet.

Ach, enough of that. At least Griffiths only had his pride hurt, and hopefully he’ll take it out on Aberdeen on Saturday. So far, the international break hasn’t left us with any extra work for the medical staff, but perhaps Ronny should give Stefan Johansen a kick up the arse, after the Norwegian , who hasn’t had the best run of form in a Celtic jersey, told us why;

“I’ve had a tough, tough week. I was very close to missing both of the games against Bulgaria and Croatia, but I made it.

“But I was driven to play well because of the thought of qualifying for the European Championships.

Maybe he should be given a rest, and Kris commons can play against Aberdeen.

For all the talk of a one team league, Saturday’s game is crucial. The Dons ran Celtic a lot closer than the eventual seventeen point gap suggests, and this season, their form is even more impressive. five games, five wins and incredibly, just one goal conceded.

Celtic tend to miss a lot more than they score, and the game is shaping up, even this early, to be one which will determine how the season goes.

Should the dons win, their fans will be rustling their sweetie wrappers well into the night, whilst Celtic’s already fragile confidence could be shattered.

A new defence, a misfiring midfield ? We’ve got it all.

For Aberdeen, this is exactly when you want to be playing Celtic. For Celtic, well, it could be a bit nervy.

Remember when we called for more competition in the league ?

I’ve changed my mind.

Though I guess it is nice to be looking forward to what should be a cracking game.

Chris Sutton, who knows a thing or two about playing up front, has offered Ronny some advice for the game.

Ronny is a stickler for this 4-2-3-1 formation because it has suited him throughout his managerial career,”

“But I believe there is still a place for two strikers and maybe Ronny should think about going this way with Ciftci and Griffiths.”

“When you play 4-2-3-1 the best player in the team has to be that centre-forward,

“The best striker I’ve seen playing in that position is Didier Drogba at Chelsea. Celtic – like a lot of teams – don’t have that kind of player.”

It couldn’t hurt to occasionally try something different. Even if it’s just to appear less predictable. The other teams in Scotland are learning how to play against Celtic, something which Age Areheid of Malmo mastered after just ninety minutes.

With four consecutive titles in the bag, it’s the best chance we will have, certainly in my lifetime, of rectifying the wrong caused by David Murrays artificially created nine in a row by going one better.

Of course, Murray used a somewhat unique fiscal policy to attain the funds for his  nine in a row, and  replacement club Second Rangers may have missed a trick with this superb marketing idea as they stumble through what appears to be a permanent cash flow problem.

Surely it should be ” Wan A Ra Peepil ” ?

Football is a funny old game. congratulations have to go out to Airdrie, formed in 2002, who secured a trophy no less than twenty seven years before they first saw the light of day.

Well done.

Thats from the SPFL website.

The picture yesterday showed one of the more despised images in recent times with a Nazi flag flying over it.

Today, and this is a proper quiz. anyone with the name Celtic collectibles on twitter isn’t allowed to enter.

What is happening here ?

I’ve had few laughs— thanks Diary. Each laugh prolongs life by several seconds evidently.

All of us need to thank Sevco for prolonging our lives! A Sevco mate told me recently they would demolish us in any future cup draw. They are “unstoppable” he said. I replied that getting awarded two penalties every match is pretty useful and reminded me of a team in the past that also had that privilege. That old team was stopped by greed. The new team has been unstoppable playing Peterhead, Alloa, Airdrie, etc. Who knows, the tax man might stop them as well? But back to the Champs in the top league:

Aberdeen Saturday. Following that, Aberdeen is away to Hearts and soon after we are at home to Hearts. I agree with Sutton about a plan B.
I like the idea of two strikers up front occasionally. We are not scoring enough goals for the chances we get. Commons is always good against the Sheep so should start. Here goes: (4-4-2)
Gordon
Lustig if fit (or Janko)/Ambrose/Mulgrew/Izzy
Forrest/Brown/Bitton/Commons
Ciftci/Griffiths

subs: Bailly/Boyata/Armstrong/Mackay-Steven/Allan/Stokes/Johansen

A draw wouldn’t be a disaster but a win would put down a marker. It already looks like Aberdeen and Hearts will be our main long-term rivals. We should let Mulgrew take more corners and free kicks. He is the best we have at that.
It will be a tough match. Our defence hasn’t settled and we don’t score enough but I think we can edge it 2-1.

Was more gutted about Murray losing in the US Open than the Scotland game, don’t know what that says about me; hopefully that Celtic football is the most important football!!

Wales have improved dramatically since leaving the Millennium Stadium, Hampden had a great atmosphere last night but against wee teams its not so good.

Paul

Keep hearing this argument of playing 2 up front and even posed this question to Big Sutton on his Twitter .
Who drops out of the team to accommodate the extra striker ?what formation do we play ? And here is the big question … IF WE CANT SERVICE ONE STRIKER HOW DO WE SERVICE 2? We are having problems creating chances … Wingers can’t cross the road ? Hear some praising wee Forrest one second and in the next breath say we should play 352 which takes him out of the side entirely!

Paul:
We can play 4-4-2 sometimes and it would work against Aberdeen:
Gordon
Lustig/Ambrose/Mulgrew/Izzy
Forrest/Brown/Bitton/Commons
Griffiths/Ciftci

The usual subs.Bailly/Boyata/Allan/Rogic/Stokes/Mackay-Steven/Armstrong

4-2-3-1 is knackering our players and leaving us open. I think it also knackers our front four. We can play our usual 4-2-3-1 in Europe.

Hey wouldn’t that be novel, a plan B.
I’m neither for or against any particular system but I do think we need more than one option for the times plan A doesn’t work.

Let’s talk about Sevco. A Sevco supporter I know said they will tear us apart if we draw them in the Cup. I said that it might be easier for them to tear us apart if:

We are no better than Peterhead, Alloa, Raith or Airdrie

If they always get awarded two penalties every game, especially at home.

If their fullbacks can run up and down at will
against part-time players.

If they or their new manager are never ever criticised for anything and have the whole referee establishment fully behind them, home and away.

If they continue to play inferior opposition.

That it is easier to beat teams that have one hundredth of your playing budget but that our budget is just a wee bittie bigger than Peterheid’s or Alloa’s. (that’s why WE often lose to Barcelona or Juventus)

I also told him he should learn the cost of arrogance like this other team that died in 2012 and that Sevco’s illegal entry in the Scottish Football League may still cost them in a court of law.

He was not right chuffed but he is “ra peepil.”

Paul

Yeah but the 442 formation is now out of fashion … Hardly anyone uses it these days … 442 has been proven to weaken the midfield … One usually has to sit deeper … You then have 2 against 3 … Most teams these days use 3 in midfield .. Either with one sitting deeper and two “box to box” or as we use more often than not 2 deeper with one just behind the striker .
Forrest is a game changer I heard someone say ? But how exactly ? What apart from running with the ball does he “bring to the table ” ? What is the end product of his runs ? A cross ? A chance ? A corner or throw in ?

Paul

An alternative could be to play a diamond style 442 or 433 however you look at it which would still have the 3 fighters in midfield with either 2 up front and one behind … The width would have to come from the full backs of course and would take out the “wingers” like Forrest

timbuffy

4-2-3-1.
4-4-2.
4-4-3.
A diamond.
How about being really radical and trying out the good old-fashioned 2-3-5 with two full backs, three half backs and five forwards deployed in the W-M formation (younger readers ask your granda)? Might not work but would sure confuse the feck out of all these modern coaching gurus.

Monti

Martin o’ Neill 3-5-2 formation.

Gordon

Lustig Simunovic Boyata

Forrest. Mackay-Steven

Brown Bitton

Johansen

Ciftci. Griffiths

Maybe Mulgrew before Boyata

Paul

Reply to  Monti

So the wingbacks are Forrest and Mackay Steven?
Umm they are not the best defenders … Agree with the rest of the team just not the wing backs … Maybe the thinking is moving that way … With the two youngsters we picked up from Man U filling either flank ?

Monti

Reply to  Paul

Paul I was thinking of Forrest and Mackay- Steven in those areas because of their pace, Brown Bitton and Johansen should be able to dominate midfield, domestically.
Defensively thinking, Janko on one side and Blackett on the other for European games and places like Pittodrie may be a better option.

One up front does my tits in, I have to be honest.

Devoy45

O’Neill’s 3-5-2 was pretty vulnerable to counter-attack. The Hun Lowenkrands carved us up several times and if I recall, we had to finally alter that formation when we played the FOD, then we got better results. A few pacy European teams also exposed that system. Maybe it would work better with the personnel we have:
Gordon
Ambrose/Simunovic/Mulgrew
Janko /Brown/Bitton/Rogic/ Izzy
Ciftci/Griffiths

Worth a try?

Always the pessimist, I fear the worst at Pittodrie, Aberdeen will be fresh as a daisy, whilst we may have a defence that haven’t played together before, plus most of the rest of the team have played two internationals in the last five days!!

Geo

Fear Aberdeen !!

Aye their players will be fresh cause none of them are internationals and their all shite don’t forget that.

Were celtic we don’t fear anybody.

Systems ? Celtic should always have two up front playing in scotland that’s all I can say on that.

Lovenkrands only did it once or twice against us. Martin O’Neill had him sussed out pretty quick by putting quick men on him. After that his effectiveness disappeared as he had limited ability. As a winger you have to be able to change your game and that’s what Forrest must do, get the head up and look for options but also for support from others. A good midfielder in support of him and he would definitely be a great asset to us. I can see Rogic being just the guy, given the chance.
