Celtic Diary Sunday August 16: There’s a New Scapegoat in Town

Poor Deydrick Boyata .

You’re teams winning 4-0. There;’s a big game on Wednesday coming up, so you don’t want to do anything silly and hurt yourself, and you spot an old pal in the crowd. eye off the ball, and it’s 4-1.

A few minutes later. you are determined not to repeat the mistake, and you notice your bootlace is coming undone.

And it’s 4-2.

Still, not everyone in the squad was unhappy.. in fact, a couple of players were positively delighted.

Well, they’ve been getting a hard time from fans of late, and they’ll be glad it’s someone elses turn.

When the full time whistle went, Ronny saved his roar for the dressing room.

Afterwards, pausing only to place a large , body shaped package, wrapped in a carpet, into the boot of his car, he wiped the blood of his hands and told the media he wasn’t too concerned about the lapse in concentration that turned a relaxing and pleasant Saturday afternoon into, almost, a but of a palaver.

Today I won’t focus on that (conceding), I’ll focus on the first 71 minutes because that was a very good performance from us We defended well and had high tempo in everything with good, quick reactions. It was a very good team performance and I’m very happy to see that today.

“The response after Kilmarnock was good.

“It (mistakes) doesn’t concern me. That hasn’t happened very often. I think it’s the first time for a long time I’ve seen that so that will always happen in football games but this was in the wrong areas and we got punished very hard.

“It’s a warning, of course, but the players know that. What we take with us now is the 70 minutes where I think we were very good.”

It’s a good point. because as the season progresses, the periods of pace and domination are getting longer, and thats a good thing. Although the switching off is a little worrying, it’s nothing that can’t be addressed.

Have to admit though, I was a little concerned that Celtic may well snatch a draw from the jaws of victory in the closing stages of the game. Thankfully, though, Inverness seemed a little shocked at how easy it had been to get the two goals, and by the time they realised they could have got more , the game was over.

The “match day ” experience started well, with new signing Scott Allan being presented to the crowd to say hello hello. Probably for the last time in his life.

Ronny seems pleased to have got him in, but not because it will hurt another club across the city, as when it comes to comparisons on the park, they really are in a different league. Allan is a playmaker, something Celtic don’t have at the moment, and if he can get quickly up to speed with the higher level, then he will be ably supported by Brown, Biton, Armstrong and Johansen, and it gives the side another option in going forward.

When Celtic get to the tenth consecutive title-by no means certain as Hearts, Aberdeen and even Dundee look like they have progressed again this year, then who knows, it may well be a midfield of Allan, Armstrong, Mackay Steven, Henderson and Forrest that takes us there.

There is clearly a plan in place to use Scottish talent as far as possible.  Not exclusively, but the circle has turned, and now it appears a promising or talented Scot, whatever his background, will be preferred to a foreigner.

Thats not to say continental players will be excluded, it’s just that the club have now decided that there are good players closer to home, and if Celtic pursue that line, and continue to dominate, then others will take their lead. Which can only be good for the game.

Who knows ? Maybe a Scotland side, largely composed of Celts, can do something in next years European championship finals….

Back to the game, and after just twelve minutes yesterday, Celts were two up through Mikael Lustig, who now looks a little more like the player we know he can be, and Leigh Griffiths, who just can’t stop scoring.

With the bookies not accepting bets on the elusive 7-0 at this stage, it seemed like it was a just a matter of picking the correct time for the seventh one going in. Perhaps even wondering if Celtic would declare at half time, like they do in cricket when one of the teams is so woefully bad that they just want to get it over with, and keep the game down to less than a fortnight.

Sturat Armstrong grabbed a couple of goals that went towards securing him the sponsors man of the match award, and showed exactly what he does bring to the team.

A lot.

He was everywhere all at once, and will be a key player against Malmo.

Scott Brown was also immense, with quieter but equally effective performances from Lustig, van Dijk and Biton, but that sevetieth mnute switch off, and  couple of substitutions brke the pattern of what was probably the best effort of the season.

It’s coming together, and common sense should dictate that whilst it’s not acceptable to let other teams back into the game, if you are going to make an arse of something, then I suppose doing it whe you’re 4-0 up is as good a time as any.

 Scott Allan also spoke to the media yesterday;

Embedded image permalink

He probably stayed home last night, maybe just got a pizza and watched a movie.

After the long drawn out campaign in the papers to allow him to leave hibernian and switch to Ibrox, it was a bit of a blow for those who once had a bit of influence in the game.

Allan not bowing to pressure, and Deila refusing to rule out signing him because of his background shows a significant shift in the heirarchy of Scottish football.

The old establishment were given free reign to try to bully the lad into going to Second Rangers. New and old media alike combined to put an unprecedented agenda together which varied from encouragement and praise to vitriol and hatred.

Even when it became clear Celtic were involved, they didn’t relent;

Embedded image permalink

Humour did feature , though, but noticably only from one side of the divide…

Mark Warburton: “We only want players who want to play for Rangers”

Ronny Deila: “Us too”

MSM: “Scott. Are you worried you’ve let down all those who prayed to see you in Light Blue?”

SA: “I don’t give a toss about the press pack”

Although there was one from the other side who was a little more mature about the whole episode, so credit where credit is due.

No revisionism. I wanted Scott Allan to sign for us. I’m not happy he is joining the Tic (for obvious ‘banter’ reasons). We gave it out..for years. Let’s take it with dignity Bears. A promise of good young talent & better football to come for us. Eyes forward & chins up

When their club was killed, and their support fleeced by the shysters, it’s guys like him I kind of feel for.

But only kind of…and the feeling passes quite quickly.

There are others you fell sorry for, but in a different way, for different reasons;

Embedded image permalink

Merry45bhoy said all that needed to be said there.

Another attempt to coerce the bhoy to join the Warburton Wizards came when the football authorities, unsurprisingly,  allowed a blatant attempt to unsettle the player before a Cup game between Hibernian and Second Rangers, causing the player to sit the game out, which allowed the Ibrox side an advantage before the game started.

No action was taken, and the campaign was cranked up a notch when Allan apparently handed in his transfer request, but in the background, Celtic, who had been asked to be kept informed-its in a previous Diary, so it must be true-were, er , informed.

Whilst the Parkhead club were entirely professional in their dealings with Hibs, the Ibrox clubs time honoured technique, well, the old clubs time honoured technique, of using the laptop loyal to help persuade club and player failed miserably.

We knew the old club was dead when it was liquidated. The new one died a little when it became apparent they don’t have the influence of the old one. Fankly, no-one gives a toss about them anymore.

It’s not hate.

It’s indifference, a far more damaging reaction.

The new club is an irrelevance, languishing in a lower league with an unproven manager and cast of players.

Make no mistake, Allan chose Celtic as the best option for him , for his family, and for social acceptability. But compared to Ibrox, it really is chalk and cheese.

They didn’t have anything to offer him. and that’s that.

Welcome to Celtic. You’ll be grand.

There is one concern though.

Should Celtic overcome Malmo in the qualifiers, there is another part of the team that needs attention.

Quickly.

Embedded image permalink

Only Grifiths is capable of scoring goals regularly out of those four, Ciftci has yet to settle, Scepovic wants to be elsewhere, and Stokes has been told he can be.

There are several rumours about incoming, from Zlatan to Hernadez to a guy who texted an Aston villa player on a plane to say he was heading to Celtic for talks.

Truth is , we don’t even know if there are plans to add a quality forward.

but you’d have to hope so…

I said quality forward.

Sorry.

Now, a word about Friday’s Diary, and one of the responses and subsequent apology.

Daviebhoy is no racist, his comments have previously been of quality and interest.

A wee mistake, thats all.

The chant, originally a retort to racist abuse suffered by Paul Wilson in the seventies, is now out of time and out of place.

Tell you a wee story.

A few years ago, we were on the bus on the way back from a game. After pretty much exhausting current ditties and the entire rebel song book, songs from yesteryear were offerd by the older memebers of our CSC.

“We all live in a catholic housing scheme,” “Jimmy johnstone on the Wing ” and so on.

Then a pause, and someone declared he would rather wear a turban than a sash, another chant which is out of time and out of place amongst the support.

Remember that film “Life of Brian ” ?

The stoning scene ?

That’s pretty much what happened next.

Image result for life of brian stoning

We have moved on from those days, and we will move on from Friday.

short again today, that garage won’t convert into a room by itself. Especially with me doing some of the work.

So, a caption competition, what’s going on here ?

apart from the fact it appears that I’ve managed to get a video to load ?

Just been reading back to Friday’s Diary and fair play to Davie for his admission of wrongdoing and apology.

However I have only just about dried my laptop after splurting tea all over it when reading that frank exchange of views between the Celtic Lassie and the hun fud.

I am considering calling them “rangersfanny” from now on, or should that be sevcofanny?

Comedy gold. They just cannae help themselves.

Once again really sorry it will not happen again.

I loved the frank exchange of views (in Fridays Diary) between the Celtic lassie and the hun fud.

” rangersfanny ” could well catch on as their new name.

Or should that be sevcofanny?

The idea we had 71 great minutes is a laugh,we chucked it after about 30 mins in the first half, and were poor for another 20 mins of the second half, exactly the same as the last 2 away games, the so called managers team selection and crazy substitutions, have already cost us a point at the useless amateurs from ayrshire, the dropping of players who play well Forrest was ripping killie apart till he was taken off,and he,s benched for Mackay stevens who,s been rubbish all season,no doubt griffiths eill be on the bench on wednesday,Boyata cost 2 goals and nearly a third in the first half, but the crowd that goes apopleptic when EFE MAKES A BAD PASS ABOUT ONCE A SEASON THEN APPLAUDS BOYATA NEXT TOUCH,seems double standards, and yesterday was not Boyatas first offences,he,s a regular bombscare, probably thinks it,s all to easy in scotland, well being left out on wed,s for the more reliable and probably mor talented AMBROSE may teach him a lesson.

Deadhead, you’re dead right about Forrest. He can be awesome. He just needs to shoot more instead of passing. He did tear through Killie.Maybe Ronny was resting him a bit for Malmo? I think wee Forrest can turn a game for us, even in Europe. I’m also a fan of big Efe. Defenders are like goalies: when they make mistakes, everybody remembers.

I think Efe has probably cost us at most 10 goals in a Celtic top through bad mistakes.
Now considering he has played 140 games (31 0f those in Europe) I don’t think that makes him a bad defender.
Boyata has made two errors yesterday that cost us two goals.
He’s played 3 games.

Going off fan logic Ambrose should start on Wednesday.

After all fair is fair no?

For the record I would start Mulgrew alongside Van Dijk that way he can cover Izzy’s are on the left side.

Ralph

I have just had half a dozen garages delivered from ETims. Is someone dropping a hint?

First of all, I would like to mention that the immediate chastisement, willing apology and ready forgiveness of Daviebhoy is simply why we are Celtic – no acrimony, no banishment and certainly no execution. So, any who had their knitting out , please put it back in the basket. I am not so certain such understanding is available throughout Scottish, or maybe any other football. I think andy docherty’s comment in the wee sma hours of this morning in Friday’s Diary says it all. I am of the generation andy refers to and have had to root out some very ingrained phraseology which for most of us had no racist connotation whatsoever but was simply every day terminology we grew up with. One has to think twice sometimes, even in the course of normal conversation, not to refer to, for example certain small grocery shops by the name we innocently called them back in the day. There was nothing derogatory about it and certainly no racist intent but, in the light of the blatant insinuations these terms contain today, then such terminology is totally unacceptable. It is equally understandable, if not excusable, that people of our generation may slip up now and then especially in the maelstrom of the internet world. Thank you to everyone for the mature and considerate way in which this matter was resolved. Ralph, I have always been proud of the Diary (No, I have not gone senile) but this has to be up there with the proudest.

I have only heard the game on “my beloved” CTV so far so definitely do not feel confident to comment. However, it would appear that, in spite of every effort, including some honey liberally spread by Big Peter Latchford, CTV could not overlook the two distinctly different performances between the first 70 minutes and from then to full time. It seems, therefore, all reports in the Diary and comments are on the button – well except the empty vessel making traditional noises from the grave. You would think someone as miserable as that would actually be quite content being dead to the world. I really can not fathom how players can be so professional for such a long period and then just switch right off and it appears to be RIGHT OFF. I feel there is more psychological work required that football training on this one. Running out of steam is one thing and drifting to other things in a game when on top is another. But every week is mind boggling. I fear Ronny needs to get several heads in Quarabang away mode for Wednesday or we might well be doomed, aye, doomed!

This Scott Allan lad seems to have some promise. I confess to not knowing much more about him than what I glean from comments about reports from the media. So, I know nothing or even less than I did when I knew nothing. I accept it is a not a bad thing for Scottish clubs to look to developing young Scottish talent but I would also still like to see better progression among youth players so that that development can be more and more in house. However, I accept it will take some time and a great deal more effort to get to that stage. I guess I need to be a s patient when it comes to waiting for the new lad to shine. No matter, welcome to a unique club, Scott. I wish you all the best and look forward to sharing in your success.

There really has been some utter nonsense said and written about his transfer and you have captured it admirably in your summary, the tweets you posted, but, perhaps just as much in your own incredible statement,

“It’s indifference, a far more damaging reaction.
The new club is an irrelevance, languishing in a lower league with an unproven manager and cast of players.”

I had to have a laugh at that, even though I agree whole heartedly, when I noted you spent about half the Diary talking about it – irrelevance? 🙂 But seriously, even though we would love them to be completely irrelevant if not non-existent, I do think social media needs to keep them in check. Free even one red hand and before long we could be facing a caged beast let lose on the rampage.

Which brings me to one of my smoothest links ever.

was it definitely Boyattas’s mistake for the 2nd? It looked like it from my seat in the front stand, but my sons who were behind the goal thought it was Janko who caused it.
Should have been a 7 – 0 game, but with Wednesday’s game so important, can understand why we downed tools so early.

Reply to  andy docherty

To me, for the 1st, it was Janko’s initial error – but then Boyata was the last line of defense, and he wasn’t committed enough at all.

On the 2nd, the usually fabulously awesome Biton played a cross-field pass, which put Boyata in danger and he didn’t deal with the danger well; I reckon Biton plays a human pass once a game to stop us getting transfer requests for him; as otherwise, he is fantastic.

I am glad Ronnie told Chico after the game that he was going to talk about the first 71 minutes; and I am glad Ralph didn’t bring anything up about that either 🙂

Boyata loses concentration far too easily and his distribution is woefull,
I am sure this will improve given time , however whilst I would most likely make him first choice rs Centre half on Wednesday, part of me would consider Ambrose or even Lustig with Janko at rb …. Too risky ? …. AHH Feck!!…. I don’t know … I just want to qualify !!!

Give effe a break . After all the abuse and catcalls I hear at games I am beginning to wonder if I know anything about football. I think he has “cost” us only one game (juve) .any mistakes he has made seem to get over exaggerated.there is always a whipping boy at Celtic park and it looks like it’s him.but I suppose when he leaves and does great in management he will be thought of as a Celtic great .like Davies moyes

Boyata has to start against malmo, it’s going to be a high intensity game from the off and I have no doubt our defence will thrive under that pressure and will raise their game to a higher level because of it, if we could keep Virgil and Boyata for a year or two a think they would turn out be the best two centre halfs we have had in a long time, lustig is the best right back we’ve had from Agathe and Izzy is the best left back we’ve had since Tosh McKinlay, keep the faith guys this is a young celtic team that’s going to go places we will take knocks along the way, we just need back Ronnie and the bhoys and am sure the good times will come. Only my humble opinion.

HH

Devoy45

Your humble opinion is a good one, in my humble opinion. We are mainly a very young team, work in progress. Unlike the past, we will be able to hang on to these young players: Mackay-Steven, Armstrong,Johansen, Forrest and so on. This is the best back four we have had for a while. Boyata is young and will learn as he goes. Denayer had to settle in as well. Like all of you, I am nervous about the Malmo game but I think we are the better team and I expect us to win over the two legs.
