Celtic Diary Tuesdy June 16: News From Lennoxtown

Our Etims mole has been taking advantage of the good weather, and spent a couple of days watching at listening to goings on down at the Lennoxtown training ground, and he’s heard a few things…

You know, like he does when he rings us and says he’s got a rumour mill ready.

Image result for oh god no

He tells us …

“Tony & Neil were supportive of sports science & encouraged it. Ronny, however is a different level. Minute details of all players kept”

“Players have individual dietary programmes and are religiously checked for body fat. Ronny’s team are experts in this area”.

“Ronny has also invoked this at academy level. He wants all young pro’s to eat, train & live like first team players”.

“Ronny has also invoked this at academy level. He wants all young pro’s to eat, train & live like first team players”.

All players (inc academy) can go online 4 hours after every match & see their performance, distance covered etc. A different world”.

“Ronny regularly visits academy training to talk to players. Has made it clear they are future of club & if they impress they will play”.

“Young players over the moon with the proactive involvement from Ronny & his intent to give them every opportunity to succeed”.

“Youth coaches have been told that any players standing out are to immediately be sent to train with first team squad”.

“Players will initially train for 2-3 weeks with first team before returning to academy. Any that excel will remain with first team”.

“Youth players have 20 KPI’s they are marked against. This is judged via use of training / game video & diet evidence all stored on d/base”.

Aidan Nesbitt trained a lot with the first team last season. Ronny has very high hopes for him if he continues to progress as expected.

That is the best news i’ve heard from the club in years. For too long we’ve seen players promise so much but fail to make the jump to the first team, which has proved to be more of a chasm than a simply a step up.

If they are monitored and integrated in this way, then they will have a much greater chance of succeeding with the club, not only because they are being helped, but because they feel they are being helped.

It’s also worth noting that they are being taught to be 24 hour athletes from the beginning, and they are getting the right habits in early, so that any step up will not be so much of a shock. The idea of them training with the first team for a couple of weeks at a time is reminiscent of the Quality Street Kids , where the youngsters would be introduced sparingly, but also sent  back to the second team to avoid burn out and , just as improtantly, to keep their feet on the ground. The latter perhaps more significant in these days of highly paid kids having achieved nothing but having the trappings of success.

More and more, there’s a feeling that had Ronny Deila not replaced Neil Lennon when he did, we may have had a problem or two within the club by now. It is starting to look like action was taken before it became a problem, and it’s been averted.

By the way, we hear John McGinley, once of Bolton, has a pub in Horwich, which is where Lennon takes the players after the game….how are they doing these days ?

The draw for the qualifiers is next week. The friendlies start soon.

ronny 5

Around this time last year, we were a little nervous. Perhaps worrying that the all important qualifiers were coming a little too soon.

This year, they could start tomorrow for all I care. We’re a different team now.

Barcelona 11/4 Real Madrid 9/2
Bayern Munich 5/1 Chelsea 7/1
Juventus 12/1 PSG 14/1
Atletico Madrid 14/1 Manchester City 14/1
Manchester Utd 16/1 Arsenal 20/1
Hide
Valencia 40/1 Sevilla 40/1
Wolfsburg 40/1 Roma 50/1
Benfica 50/1 Porto 66/1
PSV Eindhoven 100/1 Dinamo Kiev 200/1
Ajax 200/1 Olympiacos 250/1
Basel 500/1 Celtic 1000/1

No matter what the bookies think.

28 May 2016. I’m booking that day off, just in case.

Okay, maybe that’s a little bit over optimistic, there are still a few flaws to be ironed out, and we will face a tougher season at home as teams continue to improve.

But there’s something about the club now, a buzz about the place even…

Number two John Collins has spoken briefly about the problems of bringing in new players this early. After all, it’s still holiday time for most of them, and they will be advised by agents to hold on and wait for desperate clubs to raise their offers closer to deadline day. Thats why Deydrick boayat is a more promising signing than most, he didn’t hang around and made his mind up quickly, intimating that it’s Celtic he wants to play for, and no-one else.

Collins said;

“Every team are trying to get a couple in and hopefully we can before the Champions League qualifiers – They come think and fast the games for us at the start of the season – We’re back next week, June 23, it’s an early start because we’ve got the qualifiers,”

to be fair, the chaps at the Scotsman paper are trying to help…

Rumour Mill: Celtic chase Djuric | Anya | Ciftci

They couldn’t think of a player beginning with “B”, but will move on to “E” , “F” “G” and “H” tomorrow.

They won’t be doing “W” though. It looks like Danny Wilson will be joining Second Rangers as new manager Mark Warburton starts his summer shopping spree with a swoop for the out of contract defender.

doomed

Hang on, after further reading, it appears that Ciftci would be a good signing for ,,,,,Second Rangers !

RICHARD Gough has claimed that Rangers should pounce for Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci.

The former Rangers skipper reckons ‘Ciftci has already shown he can cut it at the highest level in Scotland’ and described the Turkish forward as ‘ideal for Rangers.’

Gough said: “Okay, there have been some problems with Ciftci off the pitch, but he’s hardly Gazza. If you can keep him on the straight and narrow, what an asset the lad would be. Strong, powerful and with an eye for goal, he would be ideal for Rangers.”

As long as there’s no transfer fee and he doesn’t want any wages i suppose.

The summer of spin has started, even this site is in on the act-have a look at ten things you didn’t know about Warburton- and the great revival has begun… again

Another billionaire ? Oh, wait, it’s not actually his money, and turnover isn’t the same as profit…not that the last billionaire had his own money either, but you get the point.

Then there’s the warning….

Embedded image permalink

And another….

I’d expect Rangers to be Scottish champions in 2/3 yrs – then a crack at ECL – a real CV-booster

The lad with the long Gaelic name summed it up perfectly…

But there was serious stuff at Ibrox yesterday..remember the vote at the EGM ? The result was due on a vote or two…

Embedded image permalink

As the club/company/car crash is not listed on the stock exchange-in fact it’s not listed anywhere-they aren’t accountable to anyone.

so if they don’t want to tell us, they don’t have to.

With Warburton in place the hacks have forgotten about everything else, and can’t ask any questions as lamb is back on the menu and they are cramming themselves full of it.

One expert, Gordon Smith, said it could be two or three years before they are challenging Celtic for the title… he expects the clubs to make loads of new signings and romp the First division, like last year.

They couldn’t even give the new guys a scarf each.

Well, we’d better enjoy it while we can, I  suppose. The Rangers are Coming.

laughter

They’re not on the same road as us, nor going in the same direction at the same time.

But they are coming….so they say , anyway.

I’ll leave the last words to Chris Jack, who is a reporter with the Evening times…

New Rangers boss Mark Warburton: This is my dream come blue

IT IS a walk that many have dreamt of …

but a journey that few have made at Ibrox.

Through the front doors, up the Marble Staircase, past the bust of Bill Struth and then Sandy Jardine, have a glance at the Hall of Fame board, study the pictures on the wall and take a seat in the Blue Room.

It was the route that Mark Warburton took for the first time yesterday, each step along the famous path seeing the surroundings sink in that little bit more as he got a taste of life as Rangers manager.

He does know there’s been four since February , doesn’t he. and the daft bassas are still paying two of them ?

anyway, enough of them..

Tell us your story about this particular day….

ralph,

regarding the coments about young nesbitt… when the new dietian was taking the players body fat readings nesbitt walked in and the dietian refused to take his readings saying to him that he is not an athlete and he will not waste his time with someone who is clearly not a professional… not the best way to deal with a 18 year old bhoy who can score hat tricks in cup finals

I heard when Kris Commons turned up a few years ago for pre season he was 1.5 stone overweight ( his mate Hooper was 0.5 overweight after their summer antics) and the doctor openly called it out and the weans burst out laughing…cue Kris not a happy bunny.

is there a reason Warbuton and Weir ( Weirbuton in the Brangelina stylie) had to be photographed at Ibrox rather than the usual Media picture of newbies standing upon the Rangers crest taken from the mezzanine level in Auchenhowie ( Dave King doesnt call it Murray Park).

Did security holder Mike Ashley say they couldnt use it…?

Wee bit unfair on Lennon Richie. You couldn’t do what we did V Barca, Moscow and a few others without having peak fitness. I like what Ronny is doing and feel it is about time football started to concentrate on the minute details. This is the key focus in speed sports obviously but there can be just as much benefit in endurance sports if you know what you are looking to achieve.

I watched the King’s final game in the Catholic Club in Woolwich, wish he’d got a hat trick but I was worried for a while he wouldn’t score. Sad day for such a hot sunny day.

I first saw this link a couple of years ago and it left me with goosebumps. More recently I showed it to a couple of thoroughly refreshed friends just before TFOD game and they both started to get watery eyed. It kind of has that effect!

I was in a bar somewhere or other watching it. It must have been fierce smoky in there cause I remember my eyes streaming a lot. All hail the king of kings, we’ll never see his like again sadly, a genuine world star who could walk into any team in Europe but stayed with us for 7 years. He came on and scored in a friendly in Sweden the other night, at 45, what a guy.

I love Ronny, love his roar, approve of his sport science approach, wish sometimes he’d play two strikers but can we lose the “if his approach is good it must mean Lenny’s was bad” school of thought?

They’re different, have strengths, and weaknesses, but there seems to be some revisionism going on that Lenny’s Celtic was a pre historic club of unfit duds who’d never heard the word “tactic” or “fitness” and were lucky to win anything. We stayed in the game in the camp nou for 90+ minutes, (okay ignore the 6-1 the following year for the purposes of this) scored a sack of late goals right through his tenure and I m pretty sure guys like Commons were on bespoke diets while Lenny was there – which Kris would forget over the summer and come back asking for the XXXL training gear.

Lenny had an eye for a player which to date I cant say Ronnie has demonstrated to the same degree – Wilson, Hooper, Forster, Ledley were all Lenny signings who did very well for a time and were moved on at a profit – exactly the model the board want to execute. The only player I can think of that was a Ronnie pick was Berget, and the less said about that the better (I know others have come in but I think GMS etc were collaborations, like Wanyama or Lustig)

Guys like Jim MGuiness were brought in under Lenny to specifically help young players cope psychologically with the jump to the first team.

I m not denigrating Ronnie, as I said he’s doing great, but can we not recognise the great work our last two managers have done? In fact Mowbray aside we’ve got to acknowledge the board have chosen managers well in recent years.
Sorry Ralph, not having a go, you know I love your work.

Whether second rangers have done so well time will tell, it is something approaching a coup for them, but bless them within minutes they’re all over twitter talking about “timplosions”, having a better manager than Ronnie, champions league etc, their fans really will never ever learn about humility will they. Really hope we do a ten in a row or beyond now, and force them to learn.

Just seeing the photo of the maestro in that kit reminds me of how terrible on and off the park we were back then, so enjoy these good times, but don’t take them for granted, we got our act together showing what can be achieved if the 2nd Rangers ever got money and a plan together –unlikely but not impossible.

I watched that game with my mum and normally I get upset when I see her cry. But on this day I couldn’t console her because that would only bring on more tears of my own. Never have I seen so many adults cry in unison. It was like a horrible mix of last call and the end of titanic. My sleeves took a battering that day.. took several washes until they were back to normal

Ralph

I started this ages ago but got called away – no, not to play the harp but to harp on at someone. So here goes attempt “deux”.

“TUESDY” – sounds like a good day to do running repairs round the house.

The lack of promotion of youth from “reserve” players to first team squad is something I have harped on about until I thought I would be playing one in the sky – they haven’t developed one that withstands the heat down below. I believe I am in line for the first one. So the Deila regime is sweet “harp” music to my old ears. I only hope he has discovered the actual solution to the missing step from under 19s to first team. If he has, what a future we can look forward to – Quality Street week in, week out? That will not go down well with Ronnie. Tea cakes maybe, but regular Quality Street?

As for the qualifiers, I am with you. Unlike last season there is a confidence about the games. And, even if we do not get through, which I doubt, I am certain it will be a totally different Celtic out there with great hope for the future. So, if all does not go according to expectations, let’s appreciate where we are. As you say “But there’s something about the club now, a buzz about the place even… “ and that is massive progress from last year.

Ah, the rumour mill! If any of it is true it is that Ciftci is perfect for the gasping Govenites. Not Gaza? Well he has regularly been at war with players around him so I don’t go along with that, Mr. Gough. Oh,you mean the other Gaza. Well you could be right there. But then, Ciftci is found more laying other players flat on the ground than laying flat out himself and, as yet, has stuck to beating up men. But please, Mr. Gough, keep pushing so that our short sighted scouts don’t get the weird notion, like you, that he can play at the highest level. The highest level in the lowest leagues is not quite the same. Wilson can join him too because there has to be better talent at Lennoxtown given the quality of under 19 football there than someone who was a bit better than most for a season at championship level. When the fitness regime kicks in, we will have even better in our own locker, thank you.

I am struggling to tell you what happened in the photo as my eyes were just so full of tears that day – I still had enough life in me then to get to games. It was a very sad occasion and, perhaps, signalled the end of an era. I am in a similar condition today reading the last section of the Diary, tears in my eyes, choking at each word, pain in my sides as I contemplate……..”not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is (perhaps) the end of the beginning”. Warburton’s crumbs just wont last long – and where’s “Bomber” Brown when you need him?

The King leaves the building, versus Dundee United, 2-1, he scored both goals. Larsson was maybe our only player of the last two decades we’ve had who was world class: as he later proved in the Barca-Arsenal final. He turned the match and won it. Ask Thierry Henri. He also gave us the faith that at £600,000 or so there might be another surprise out there; we’ve never lost that faith. Also, his first season we lost the first two games of the season and poor Henrik was disposessed by Chick Charnley. Little did we know…I remember a hat trick he scored against Aberdeen at Parkhead and I’ve never seen any player move like that….and I’m 65. Giving us seven years when he probably could have trebled his salary across the border was real class, real loyalty.

Mark felt a shudder go through him as he made his way up the Marble Staircase…
Ghosts of yesteryear whispered in his ear…telling him to look up and see the heroes whose names would never be forgotten.
For a second or two he was transfixed and even afraid…
But then he saw Mr.Struth looking down on him and he was energised again.
With pride and vigour he strode forward to his first Press conference…Then another voice whispered in his ear…
“That’s the wrang fuckin’ door ya Muppet…it’s ower here.”
Oh well..it was good while it lasted.
