Celtic Diary Monday June 1: Oh, The Sun Has Got his Hat On…

Summer is officially here. And that means everyone, even me, is in a good mood.

The first signing of the summer, mentioned here weeks ago, is about to happen. Subject to medical.

Dedryck Boyata, out of contract at the end of this month at Manchester city, has seen how his Belgian team mate flourished at Celtic Park, and said,

“Ay, up, Ah’m  ‘aving some of that , lad, ” ,

showing not only his enthusiasm for the move, but also his knack for picking up the local lingo.

He was met by John Park at Glasgow Airport;

Dedryck Boyata (left) arrives in Glasgow and is joined by Celtic scout John Park (centre) at the airport

There is talk of a small fee, or a first option buy back clause, but that’s more likely to be a good natured nod of the head between pals than anything formal. The clubs get on very well, and Celtic cannot argue that are doing badly out of the deal.

One Man City fan rates him, at least;

“We want you to stay, we want you to stay, Dedryck Boyata, we want you to stay”

 Samaras, Bitton, Denaayer, Guidetti and now Boyata have all been involved to some degree at Manchester City, so perhaps it’s one of the better “business arrangements ” we’ve entered into.

Danny Wilson, of Hearts may also be on the Arrivals list, but there is nothing concrete to suggest this as yet. but this is Etims, and he’sprobably already being measured for his kit.

Away from all that , the happiest player at Celtic Park seems to be Charlie Mulgrew….

Mulgrew explains what was ‘hard’ when Deila joined Celtic

frankie howerd

I didn’t read the report. I didn’t want to.

You can , though, and let me know if it’s as bad as I fear;

“A lot has changed since last summer. It was early days for the manager and he was still getting his ideas across,” said Mulgrew

“Having to adjust to that was hard but we’re much more prepared this year and will be ready when it comes.”

Next on the list of incomings could be Glasgow boy Barry Douglas, of Lech Poznan, if reports in Poland are to be believed, with Celtic ready to part with around 700,000 notes ( I don’t have a key for the euro symbol ) to secure cover for Emilio Izaguiire. Kieran Tierney, whilst very much in ronny deila’s plans for the future, isn’t ready to step in at a high level just yet, and further options are required at left back.

 Douglas has done well in Poland, and appears ready to come home.

See, everybody’s happy.

Well, nearly everyone.

Chick young, esteemed BBC journalist is upset about something.

And a well known supermarket is ruing an investment that didn’t work out.

And despite Stuat McCall bringing happiness and laughter to thousands, he seemed upset about something yesterday afternoon.

Embedded image permalink

although one or two were less than impressed;

Embedded image permalink

Many of us enjoyed the entertainment on television yesterday with coverage of the vanquishing of the Hun. When that was finished-Chris Evans did a better job than I though he would-we could switch over to BT sports and watch another vanquishing as Motherwell set out to protect their lead over Second Rangers in the Premier League play offs.

It took them until the second half to realise that they didn’t have to defend it as vigourously as they may have feared, and eventually the Lanarkshire side ran out 6-1 winners on aggregate, showing the gulf between the two divisions is larger than many in the press would have had you believe.

Motherwell finished 56 points behind Celtic in the top league, but were still way ahead of their Ibrox opponents.

Sturat McCall, who never wins these clashes whichever team he’s in charge of, now joins the ranks of managers who will always be associated with their abilities;

Embedded image permalink

The town of Motherwell needs their team to be in the top league. The club finished in third place just twelve months ago, but had a terrible start to this season, recovering only when McCall left and they improved.

Locally, there were concerns about trouble off the pitch;

Embedded image permalink

and a campaign in the town running all week;

But the local constabulary stepped up to the plate;

Embedded image permalink

With his  club two down, McCall needed to add a bit of punch to his side, and sent on a delighted Bilel Moshni

Embedded image permalink

who, it has to be said, got stuck in,

Embedded image permalink

before being hauled away by officials

Embedded image permalink

Stuart McCall, speaking after the game, said, that he hadn’t seen the incident, and that was the “gospel truth ”

Embedded image permalink

The police are looking into the matter, which coincidentally, is exactly what the high ranking officer in the picture appeared to be doing as well.

The Ibrox support were as, er, supportive as ever, as their pre match battle fever

turned into a mass retreat.

Embedded image permalink

much to the delight of one viewer…( I know, he’s been on here before, but he loves his football on the telly…)

If you have any doubts as to who you really wanted to win, the scenes after all the fuss died down would have sealed it. motherwell fans sanf the old classic ” Twist and Shout “, dancing and laughing, whereas we suspect the hordes from the southside would have perhaps reminded the world the famine was over, their knees were covered in a sticky substance unlikely to come out in the wash, and their father once wore a bright coloured sash.

Although I may have heard one  brave chap trying to get in the mood with a chorus of  ” Come on baby, do the no promotion. ”

I do hope he’s okay.

Image result for manchester 2008 rangers

We’ll discuss the imminent league reconstruction at a later date.

What now for the second incarnation of the Ibrox club ?

Well, there’s the small matter of another season where income won’t match expenditure, and the major creditor, major secured crditor, is already after his money…

And a dozen players out of contract…

The debt is secured, which rules out administration.

Which means liquidation is a real possibility.

Which means the SFA/SPFL , will, not next season, but the one after, try to shoe horn the latest entity into the newly expanded SPFL.

We need to act now. We need to take action.

Look at Aston Villa.

Outraged by the allegations of corruption in the game, they refused to play in the English cup final as a protest.

Thats the sort of commitment we need.

Mick McCarthy brought back a few memories over the weekend, including the time when he punched an opposition player, which shows exactly how fickle we can be.

After the game yesterday, which ex-Celt took to social media to offer his thoughts ?

It looks like you are going to spend one more year trying to get back right @RangersFC?

Meanwhile, there’s a joke doing the rounds

Quality all the way Ralph bravo.
I often wondered what could be the lowest point as a rabid orc during the last 3 years of quintessential catastrophe?
I think Motherwell fans of all people singing “SPL yer huvvin a laugh” must top it surely.
Had a rather large portion of Submarine Sundae for my pudding last night 😉

I actually heard an apparent Celtic diehard say on Saturday

“I hope the Huns win 3-0, I dont want them being able to claim they have won every league in Scotland which they could do next year!”

I might have been in Deadheads coompany and not known it!

Hats off to Stephen McManus, he wanted to win so as the staff who don’t work in the football side of Motherwell would not lose their jobs. Humility still exists in football. Give Blatter a call Stephen.

I have a confession to make, the tele was shit last night, unless you like dancing dogs etc, so I spent the night on the dark-sides websites playing a game mates of mine have being doing for years. You go on and praise the team, I suggested that McCulloch should be made player manager for next year, because of his outstanding service to Rankers. Leave it for a couple of seconds and the raging mob come at you like a Mohsni. They called me names that I have never even heard before. Then you ask them where they expect the money to come from because you heard that King has no money. Wait ………more names, more raging, this is brilliant. Give it a try!!

ralph, i hope all this chat of being able to watch yesterdays game on tv was not coming from your household after the cancel sky campaign 🙂

hilarious scenes yesterday and great being able to walk into work wearing a smil and watching the sevcolites sink behind there desks..

just hope our manager has learned from mistakes and we get to the group stages of the champions league and put them another 5 years behind us… if not then im afraid ronny is just another lennon and the club will be going backwards… however if the last 6 months is anything to go by then we will once again be enjoying trips to lisbon and barcelona!!

Marc Crocas was the man if that is how you spell his name. Yesterday was indeed a spectical for all.Jelly and Ice cream all round. Cammy Bell will be thanking the Lord for Moshny or whatever he is called. It is going to be a long hard year for the hoards. Maybe we will see Mr kings true colours sooner than we thought. HH

Marc Crosas is the quote, top trolling there. On Sport scene last night they did the pre game montage thing showing the goals from Ibrox last week and text coming up on screen saying “Rangers..Motherwell…one last fight”. Subtle, but hilarious

What a time to be alive! Boyata is a pretty good signing, don’t think he has the class of Denayer but is a proper defend first type defender with reasonable pace and scope to get better – he could do with getting his feet moving quicker from what I recall of seeing him play at City – he had a bit of a run in the first team when Mancini was there.

I get the feeling Celtic really are going to try to make CL this season rather than just say it as in other years – buying players early, not selling key men before qualifiers, obviously time will tell but the omens appear good so far.

And our Glasgow neighbours, dearie me, shown up by a pretty average Motherwell side, not even reverting to Super Salary’s trademarked big boot towards the box tactics helped them, they were truly rotten and after an initial 20 minute surge had no legs or fight left, except Moshni obviously, and Motherwell won in a canter. And just how funny was the attempt by the goalkeeper to catch / punch/ blow away/ cry at that looping deflected shot that was in the air long enough to allow tims everywhere to fill up their lungs with oxygen as it rotated before thelong long peals of laughter that followed? That’s what I call an honest mistake

A lot of tims getting excited saying this will mess up Dave kings plans. I hate to disappoint them, but Dave King hasn’t got a plan! How they ahem “plan” to hold a successful rights issue, get approved onto a share trading platform, hire a football management team and board executives, recruit a new playing squad, increase season ticket prices and uptake and hit the ground running in time for the new season is just a little beyond my comprehension. All this stuff about transfer tug of wards etc, please! 1) Scott Allan isn’t good enough for us at the moment, 2) 2nd Rangers haven’t paid a transfer fee since Templeton in 2012, and nothing happening from there indicates they’ll be paying transfer fees any time soon. Mere fantasy bs from the laptop loyal. Celtic are forging their own path, we play in a league free in the main from the bitter, horrible sectarian sh*te that mars the West fo Sctoland too often and if we ever need a chuckle 2nd rangers always seem willing to oblige. Long may it continue.

One last thought – I tend to stay out of debates about conspiracies etc in Scottish football – mainly as I don’t massively believe them, (bar the odd Hugh Dallas type situation – but this I d class as one bitter bigot as opposed to institutional bias) and so I d like to say that any fears about “honest mistakes” from the referees in these play off games were unfounded, some mistakes were made but they were seemingly genuinely honest and the 2 games were played without any noticeable favouritism to one team in particular. As it should be of course, but thank goodness that’s how it was nonetheless, imagine if some how a few “honest mistakes” had got 2nd rangers over the line, the ill feeling there would be. Maybe this sporting integrity is catching on!

Elcormaco, there is a video on sabotage times through newsnow, that shows Boyata playing against Bayern in a preseason friendly. He looks the part, reads the game, fairly quick, can tackle and head and pass a ball.
I am impressed we are sorting out business like this early in the window and not waiting til August

Yes Ralph there is a lot of comment on the fact that Sevco will need to spend at least another year in the 2nd tier of Scottish football;
they have no money and they owe a whole lot to Ashley
their Chairman is a convicted felon
their manager is clueless
their players are really poor and mostly out of contract now
the club (clumpany?) will need to rebuild, again
they were completely outclassed by a really poor Motherwell side
once beat one of their players assaulted a fellow professional (sic)
their fans (hordes?} are revolting again
however nobody but nobody has yet mentioned this…….
Paul Murray has a fabulous head of hair, there I said it!

All jokes aside, people from all over the world weer watching this match, and after the scenes at the end it was shown by the media globally. Is this the view that we want the world to have of Scottish football? Too often the SFA have supported this shower. Time to cut them loose once and for all. No more thugs in Scottish football!

The task facing the lying king is gigantic and will not be a given that they come up next year either. If big mick decides to put the put it in could all end in tears for the plucky minnows of the south side. Just wish my dad was here to see this.

Live in deepest Ayrshire, normally travel to Glasgow for the Celtic games but decided to visit one of the hovels that passes for a pub down here. What a tremendous afternoons entertainment, better than Seville.
How they hate us and when Ainsworth crossed himself after the goal, mighty me.
As usual brilliant article, Boyata looks a good investment for the upcoming games.

There is a surprise.

Some contrasts over the last week:

– Celtic Park and Ronny Deila and his daughters walking round the pitch after the trophy presentation.
– The smile on big Yogi’s face (and his daugeters too) on winning the Scottish Cup (yes, I know, it should have been us, but it does no harm for the longer term benefit of the game for others to win the cups now and again)
– St Johnstone’s hospitality for ICT fans going home on Saturday.
– Fir Park at full time: I rest my case m’lud.

Four reasons amongst many why we don’t need now or at any time in the future Sevco or whatever incarnation they assume anywhere near the SPFL (or Scorrish football more generally.)

‘ I’ve heard people say that this is just the way it is in Scotland but I don’t know if you know this , he’sactually Tunisian so you can’t say that’ Honest to God he did !
Guess which club Peter Lawell’s son is employed with in a scouting capacity ?

A few post Fir Park musings..

It never ceases to amaze me that, even those Tribute Act fans who, at least on the surface, appear to have slightly more brains than a half-wit (2 or 3 of them at least) seem to be totally incapable of understanding why they are so despised by the rest of football.

I can only assume it must be some genetic brain deformity similar to the lower amygdala volumes in criminals, which – when combined with their innate Wee Arra Peepil superiority complex – precludes the possibility of either admitting they’ve ever been wrong, or understanding the concept of “you reap what you sow” .

For example, 1st Rangers apologist @Moonman1873 tweeting yesterday before kick-off that the rest of Scottish football “Would rather see empty seats than see fans attending games” suggests a massive disconnect with reality.

He later also suggests adding Motherwell to Celtic, Aberdeen & Dundee Utd for “disgusting levels of hatred” towards them.

However, unlike our blue proboscis friends, I do have the cojones to admit when I’m wrong and I’ll even admit it if I think they have a point, so…

I have to say that over the 2 legs, I can’t complain about the referring of either Madden or Thomson.

Also, I do think that – given the situation – I have to question why Motherwell fans were allowed on the park to taunt the remaining remnants of the hircine hordes. – Not that I grudge the Well fans the chance to celebrate staying up, but, in the interests of consistency – and in a far less volatile situation – you’d have to ask why such a fuss was made last March at Firhill about some (over bhoysterious) Celtic fans trying to get on the pitch to celebrate such a trivial matter as winning the league? Surely that was far less a threat to public order than taunting wounded bears or zombies?

Excuses for ending on a slightly sour note, but would I be right to suggest that the imminent arrival of Boyata means that Virgil’s departure – hopefully not before the CL qualifiers – is now an absolute certainty?

I’m in a “told yeez so” mood today so…

1)When RD was going through the difficult start in his job as Celtic manager and fans were getting disappointed, worried, angry and even abusive towards him, I predicted on another forum that he would come good, win the league by at least 8 points and win one of the cups (there wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that he was going to be “allowed” to win the treble).

2)I also wrote way back when sevco were starting at the bottom tier that it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that they were just gonna win each league successively and return to the top. I said it wasn’t gonna happen that easy. Their fans, and many others, really believed it was only a matter of a few short years and they’d be back where they belong (?). Well it may be a matter of “time”…a bloody long, long time before we see them anywhere near the top division…if ever.

3)Now they think they’re certs to come up next year..well I’ll stick my neck out and say St Mirren have more chance of winning that division or being in the playoffs next year.

One day our grandkids might be asking us “Who were sevco?” and us 95 year olds will chuckle!!

Flann1gan

Hibs, St Mirren, QoS and Falkirk in that division next year – I wouldn’t bet against Sevco spending another season in the Championship.

A great day of entertainment yesterday as the punching above their weight SEVCO crashed to earth again! The next few weeks will be interesting as big Mick demands his money back and the current incarnation of the South Side minnows goes tits up again leaving creditors unpaid including the Queen’s tax collectors. Honestly once again it would be hard to make this up and yet here it is – jelly and ice cream again thanks

Scottish football ‘shame’ games: rangers v Celtic, rangers v Aberdeen, rangers v Raith Rovers and now rangers v Motherwell.

I think I can spot a pattern here, shame the authorities can’t.

andy docherty

liquidation isn’t going to happen.
MASH have them by the short and curlies – 7 year rolling contract on the retail.
if sevco keep running up debts and try to liquidate, MASH will just pay the debts and take ibrox & murray park as security.
The only way they’ll get rid of MASH is to pay them £30 million and they do not have that kind of money.
MASH will now strengthen their hold on sevco and king will eventually scurry back to SA.
Next season in the championship will be really difficult – QOS, St Mirren (with a real manager), Falkirk with a years more experience and Hibs will all be wanting up.
It’s all getting very interesting again.

The old bones have been letting me down of late and I am having a bad night so thought I’d read the Diary to cheer me up. Loved today’s, especially the faces. Even KB’s horse looked depressed and has decided to turn it’s royal baggage to the left. That sign outside Motherwell has been there for years. I wonder if there is a Motherwell Seer. The Moshni stuff and McColl’s “cross ma hert ‘n hope tae die” stuff then the photo, were simply brilliant. You and the comments might keep me up till dawn now but what a fun way to spend a sleepless night. Giving the ice cream a miss as I have had a sore belly laughing since yesterday evening.

I notice the comments by Alan Burrows Motherwell General manager.
” There were significant police presence almost double what we would normally have for a game and way more than we would have for a Celtic game because of the fact that we thought there may be a bit of a difficult atmosphere”
He also criticised rangers for openly commenting on the behaviour of the well fans no doubt trying to deflect attention away from their own players behaviour.
Gives a lie to the usual comments of ones as bad as the other nonsense.
