Time to sell Celtic Plc?

Desi, Ralph and Hector get together with Michael Greenwell from Scottish Independence Podcast site to discuss:

Where next for Celtic Plc? – Is our club being primed for a big sell-off?

Where next for Neil Lennon?

Where next for Barcelona?

That Referendum thing and Celtic connections within!

Oh and there may be quite a bit of chat about Celtic under Ronnie Deila…Disaster or Patience needed?

If that wasnt enough we also have 20 minutes impersonating Radio Clyde Super Scoreboard…Michaels “Derek Johnstone” is a joy to behold!

Our glorious leader really hasn’t done much since he had that hit with ” The Israelites ” way back in the 60’s.

For some reason, I’ve never been able to play the Tom Boyd podcast up there on the left of the page. Is that available anywhere else? Spreaker? YouTube?

I think it is though I suspect they will wait till 2019.
That’s when the final payment is due to the Co-op.

It’s in this years Financial Report:

http://www.celticfc.net/downloads/SE_notifications/results_30_june_2014.pdf

7. BANKING FACILITIES

Following a review of potential future banking facility requirements, the Company entered into a new lending
agreement with the Co-operative Bank effective as of 30 August 2014. This new agreement has a combined
borrowing facility of ยฃ20.40m which consists of a ยฃ6.00m revolving credit facility and ยฃ14.40m IN LONG TERM LOANS.
The revolving credit facility will bear interest at base rate plus 1.00% and will reduce by ยฃ0.50m after
year one and a further ยฃ0.50m after year two. The facility will be repaid or reviewed after three years.

The long term loans will bear interest at London Inter-Bank Offered Rate plus 1.125%.

They are using the Clubs money to service the Debt whilst making plenty meanwhile and when it comes to July 2019 they will sell up and make a killing.

After all that’s why they Invested in the first place..to make money.

As much as I back the board with how they manage Celtic I’m under no illusion about the people who make up that board. We are being run as a PLC/Brand/Corporate whatever hat you want to put on it. Every one of us including myself are entranced by the CL franchise. So, if that’s a given then you need to act accordingly, in a business sense. Waken up at the back!
I haven’t been to a game since LNS and I’m confident that my prediction that Resolution 12 would find the long grass will hold up. This board sees our Club as being one half of a duet and until that is rectified I won’t be back.

There’s a Sugar Daddy, called Honest Dave, wanting to buy into a Glasgow club.He has wealth off the radar, although in his case,
it is well hidden. There are chancers everywhere, and if our club,
ends up in wrong hands,it could be disasterous.
In saying that, our club is now run,to suit the fat cats. The fans are the club. And a fan-ownership model, would be ideal.

Great topic for the podcast on ownership of our great club. Perhaps it is time for Dermot to sell off his shares and for us to get new investment. The problem is that nearly all spectacularly successful clubs these days have a very rich benefactor willing to shell out his/her own money for success and to boost their own egos. Even willing to pay the silly low fines handed out fro breaching the “fair play” rules. Maybe a salary cap is in order like in USA. Fan ownership is a wonderful concept and even mighty Barcelona are struggling these days to get that right with 100,000 season ticket holders in La Liga. They are now selling the jerseys to Qatar!. Outside football Operations one area that Dermot and the Board could have done and still can do a much better job is getting more commercial tie ups and revenue raising partnerships with other sports clubs and/or various brands. There is a massive Irish and Irish/Scottish diaspora out there based in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England that we are losing to the EPL and the teams that play in it. This is not helped by lack of TV appeal of the SPFL overseas. I feel the board can consider doing a lot more commercial activities and hook up joint merchandising and other deals with partners e.g. the Boston Celtics, any Boston sports team actually! Any Chicago sports team, Any New York sports teams except New York Rangers of course The GAA. The point being more cash better chance of winning more trophies, tons of cash better chance of winning trophies in Europe.

Be careful what you wish for!!! The board have done a brilliant job with the finances. Who is going to fund huge spending in our league? The FOD did it and look where they are, completely donald ducked! As for Ronny, I am not convinced, but who else would take the job.

Interesting airticle in Outside of the Boot blog on Porto the most financially efficient club in Europe.. Well worth a read.
Celtic could take a few lessons from this ‘small’ club. And develop their buy low sell high policy. Interesting how Porto buy the best local talent boost it with young South Americans ( political situation allows this) give them an avenue to bigger leagues at massive fees.
Don’t Know if Celtic could use the contraversial shared ownership of players in the lean times to see them through non CL years? This is a club which depends on it’s quality scouting system to sign players in volume to find the gems to sell on at ยฃ20-ยฃ30m. The trick is maintaining a club that regularly gets to the Last 16 in the CL.
