Celtic Diary Friday October 25

Manager Neil Lennon has more or less given up on keeping Fraser Forster at the club. With interweb rumours linking the big keeper with some of Europes wealthier clubs, it does seem like he’ll be celebrating his last new year in Glasgow come January;

“People might say I am biased but over the last two seasons in the Champions League he has proved at the highest level that he’s a fantastic goalkeeper and he’s still only 24. For a keeper who is still so young. He’s got so much more to come.

“The way he’s playing at the minute and the fact he’s knocking on the door to be England’s No.1 playing in the Scottish league, that speaks volumes for his talent.”

“Sometimes it is very frustrating as a manager, as you are trying to build something, you are trying to progress the club but it is a huge compliment about what we have
done over the past two or three years and it has
really put the club on the map again.

“People are talking about us down south in more glowing terms than probably for a long time and that’s down to the performances of the players.”

He’s more optimistic about keeping some of the others though, but ominously, Anthony Stokes, still to sign a new contract, isn’t on the list;

“We have a core – Brown, Ledley, Commons, Samaras, Lustig and Ambrose has just signed a new contract.

“It is important to keep that core together while one or two individuals may move on.”

Forster himself has spoken of his England ambitions, and revealed he has not been told whether he will feature in any friendlies before next years World Cup;

There has been no mention about me being used [by England] in the friendlies which are coming up,

There is still a lot of football to be played between now and next month and your club form has to be good before you can even think about playing for your country,If it happens then it happens and it would be terrific but, until it does, I’m just concentrating on Celtic.

The whole England thing is a bit of a bonus at the moment, For me, it’s all about playing well for Celtic and, if I can do that, the rest will take care of itself.

Apart from a short period in the early 2000s, Celtic have been a selling club since the fifties, with players usually tempted south for more money, and although its hard to take, the gulf in wages continues to grow, and unless players gain a particular affection for the club, then it isn’t going to change. Celtic cannot match the inflated wages in England, but if a player could be swayed by a higher signing on fee when his contract is up, then the club should try a little harder to find the money.

A settled and experienced team would continue to progress at the highest level, and the resultant financial spin off would more than compensate. Its just a matter of whether we want to be successful on the field , or off it.

The board should remember that supporters don’t sing songs about bank balances.

Someone who has appeared on the radar of those who, er, look at radars at Celtic Park is Craig Bryson of Derby County.

This, from HITC Sport;

The small in stature midfielder isn’t a huge physical presence on the pitch but lets his feet and intelligence on and off the ball do the work. He has an incredible long-range shot on him when he gets a bit of time on the box but will not waste chances if he doesn’t fancy himself.

He is a box to box midfielder, neither out and out attacking or overly defensive he will always make himself an option and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. Perhaps one of the hardest working players in the Championship and seems to cover more ground than anyone else on the pitch in any given match day situation, he empitomises consistency and hard work.

All they had to do really is say he’s cheap, there is apparently a £750,000 buy out clause in his contract.

The  Glasgow derby is on Sunday, and as we mentioned earlier, there will be collections at Firhill to support the foodbanks throughout the city. The club should be reminded of its roots, and publicly lead the way in supporting this appeal.

Maryhill Food Bank

French magazine So Foot has published a list of the best fans in the world. Celtic make the list with a more than respectable third place;

1. Boca Juniors (Argentina)
2. Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
3. Celtic Glasgow (Scotland)
4. Raja Casablanca (Morocco)
5. Napoli (Italy)
6. Galatasaray (Turkey)
7. Athletic Club Bilbao (Spain)
8. Red Star (Serbia)
9. Urawa Red Diamonds (Japan)
10. Saint-Etienne (France)

Ally McCoist has demanded to know the names of the people on the jury.

Notably, there are no teams from the English superleague on there, with thousands of  real fans being priced out of the game down here, although Liverpool do get a mention, as the magazine says that their version of  “You’ll never Walk Alone ” is not as good as ours;

“If this hymn is adored by “Scousers” of Liverpool, at Celtic Park in Glasgow they have a cappella version which is better.”

They didn’t mention the awful “Fields of Anfield Road”  But then, nobody does.

With the extinction of the club formerly known as Rangers, it seems the royal family-not the one one the telly with the lazy bloke and his dysfunctional clan who do feck all all day but sponge off the state, oh wait, it is that one- are trying to drum up support from the more traditionally Republican club in Glasgow.

With the Queen already scheduled for a visit to Celtic Park next year-probably a champions league game-one of her kids, or grandkids, I get mixed up, released this picture yesterday;

This is William, destined one day to be King William, so he does have a bit of work to do to win over the crowds at Celtic. The overly long dress on the baby is to hide its unfeasibly long legs, anomolies which are common in families that marry their cousins.

There was an attempt to move away from this tradition a few years ago, but it didn’t really work.

Etims reputation was in tatters yesterday when the Scotsman gave credibility to something that appeared in the Diary a week or so ago.

Remember this ? From Charlotte Fakes ? Then a drunk guy confirmed it to us last week.

from charlotte Fakes

Or did we give credibility to the Scotsman ? Tell you something else, keep an eye on the keeper who got injured, also mentioned on the front page. Injured ? Is homesickness an injury ? Ach, nonsense. Its not like Steve Bruce, the Hull manager, ever goes to Celtic Park..

Meanwhile, all is not well over at Ibrox. No, really.

The bold Charlotte Fakes has tweeted this;

Authors of Purchase Agreement. Asset purchase clause inserted by Aidan Earley (aka Chad Edmund) and Rafat Rizvi.i.imgur.com/lOa0wk2.jpg

Seems the CW payment to Imrans Mum can now be reconciled as 50% of £250k exclusivity fee/deposit and 50% of £25k FFW fees to date = £137.5k

Rafat Rizvi ?

Is this the same guy ?

Today , apparently , Rangers supporters will be told who is behind the mysterious Marguerita and Blue Pitch companies. Can’t think who it might be, but it definitely isn’t this man.

Thats despite Hugh Keevins saying it is. Actually, because Hugh Keevins says it is, it won’t be him.

Hugh Keevins feature in the latest Etims podcast, and the story within may actually explain the hacks ramblings in the papers.

John Paul Taylor.Celtics Supporters Liason Officer took a couple of hours last night to talk candidly about his role at Celtic. He answered all our  questions fully and frankly, and told a few funny stories as well.

Credit to him for being so honest, and the link can be found on the site today.

We can spend our whole lives moaning about the match day experience, but the man genuinely wants to improve it. Have a listen to what he has to say, and if need be get in touch with him about any concerns you have.

We might even get toilets outside the ground for kids , and although mine have all grown up now, its still a step in the right direction.

Alan Hansen was one of a few that got away in the seventies. Sean Fallon , in his book, reviewed elsewhere on here, mentions that not only would we have got Hansen, but Dalglish could have been tempted to stay, and Ronnie Whelan wouldn’t have been difficult to get, especially as he was offered to us.

History could have been so different…but thats what happens when you sell your best players and replace them on the cheap. Oh hang on, thats where we came in….

Odd one out time…

Alex Ferguson has a new biography out. In it are such jaw dropping revelations as Wayne Rooney has difficulty in learning, and David Beckham thought he was bigger than the club. If Davie Moyes carries on the way he has started, the tea lady will be bigger than the club.

Lambert was only one who the ITV commentator thought was a French midfield superstar called “Lamberrrrrrrr” when he marked Zinedine ZIdane out the game for Borussia!

I know the answer is SLigo related but also wondering how many have managed teams that played against Celtic..might be a wee different odd man out there too.

“The board should remember that supporters don’t sing songs about bank balances”

If they did we could sing Bank Roll of Honour or the Boys of the Old Threadneedle St Brigade with the full backing of the suits ! There must be a few others ?

Is the quiz answer -as you progress down through the pictures they will eventually morph into Martin O’Neil ?

Just listened to the podcast – good work lads.

I couldn’t help noticing the Ralph’s accent resembles like a well known Glasgow based, banjo playing comedian.

“It would be brrrrilliant if we could get a toilet at the coachpark. Then I could do a weeee jobby when I arrive”.

Just a note on the man by man from Ajax. Dissapointed that you let the report on Mulgrew on. Apart from VVD thought he was the bes player on the park and so did many others. Not champions league class as the article called him bas unworthy after a briliant performance

Its all about opinions ( copyright Hugh Keevins!)…if we all agreed it really would be a dull place wouldnt it. Nae hymn sheets here ( Atheist CSC!) and we actively encourage that we all have a different view. Thats how it should be, all open to argument and none of this toeing party line like other clubs.

Hope you added your Chuck defence in the comments on the Man By Man article page itself.

As for Mulgrew…Chuck gives us his all and thanks to him for that but he is NEVER the midfield answer long term in the CL for Celtic which is a given it seems but it also shows how people see games with different assessments. Look at Ralph Malph and I’s differing views on Sammi…its all productive in the end as it shows we all just desire whats best for Celtic on the park.

Willie McStay is the only one who has a brother that’s a better player than him.

I used to play fitbaw against wee Joe Coyle in Old Crocks games at Giffnock. Joe was once at Celtic then more known for Dumbarton, even Oweny would concede Joe was better than his brother who went on to a fine fitbaw career.

Dalglish is/was brought up as a hun, but I don’t think that’s the answer….

Has anybody else mentioned that Willie McStay is the only one of the 4 never to have earned a full international cap? – BTW Coyle played once (only) for the Republic, coming on as a sub in a friendly against the Dutch

Did you lock my comment in the toilet? Ach, it was a load of sh** anyway as usual. Had me flushed for a bit but got over it now. Could still be in the pipeline, mind so hold your nose. I did not get p***sed with you though as i had great sympathy with your bladder problems in Glasgow. Those folk have never been sympathetic to a Willy, especially one filled with orange.

I give up for the good of my health. Can I just congratulate the team again on a smashing interview with JPT. Very informative and funny. By the way, did the concrete post claim due compensation from HK?

I think Celtic fans have got to accept that we will always be a selling club until we move to a different league. It’s the only way we can survive. I don’t have any issue with this as long as we keep on bringing in other players.
I would love us to build a team worthy of really mounting a challenge in the CL, but I reckon we only get to sign the players we o on the proviso that we won’t stand in their way should a decent offer come in for them. I honestly think this is one of the reasons we get some of the players we do. They know they’ll get a couple of years of winning things, a good chance of competing in the CL and a move to the EPL should they perform well.
Unfortunately with the limited income stream that we have it’s the only way we can survive.
Time to stop moaning about it and just enjoy the players for the time we have them.

I accept fully we have to be a selling Club Andy and have no qualms about punting our best players when a large offer comes in…
However what I do take umbrage to is the concept of replacing these vitally important players with sub standard or mediocre replacements.
In my honest opinion only Wilson has been truly replaced by a player of equal or as it is now looking like superior quality.
I think yet again we have messed up with the signing of Balde because at £1.7m or whatever he cost he should really be fighting for a spot in the side at that price.
Instead we have comments like “work in progress” coming out of the managers mouth…Johnny Russell at half the price would never have been a “work in progress” and Finbogasson at 4 times the price would have been “banging them in” like he has been doing every week since Big Pedro gulped and headed for the next flight to Germany to pick up Shalkes 3rd choice striker for £3m.
We raked in over £20m for players bud and spent half that bringing in One player of real quality, one Free Crock ,One Expensive Crock,One Cheap Youngster with potential,One “PROJECT” and one is he or isn’t he the real deal front man.
We need quality to compete in Europe whilst making a few bob wheeling and dealing in the meantime bud a balance I don’t think MrLawwell has quite reached as of yet.
Had Shagpile Parahandy put either of the 2 late chances away at Celtic Park our approach during the last window would have looked very foolish indeed.
£15m nearly down the swanny thanks to our tight fisted approach to replacing our main Goal threat and Midfield General in Wanyama mid qualification.

Don’t recall any of the Lisbon Lions being sold for big money. They stayed until Big Jock decided he no longer needed them. It should be the same today!
