Celtic Diary Tuesday August 13 2024: There’s No Pleasing Some People

On the pitch, Brendanball continues to impress, a 2-0 win at Easter Road means Celtic lead the way at the top of the league, and have still to concede a goal in this campaign, despite having a plethora of defenders who aren’t very good.

One would think that the way the team is playing, and not only are they playing well, they are entertaining, there would be much more of an optimistic feeling amongst the support.

Liam Scales would disagree, one fumble and immediately the crowds call out for less….less of Scales, that is. Greg Taylor was relieved, as it meant they were moaning at someone else for a change, though next week it’ll be Cameron Carter Vickers, already hearing rumblings that he was below par as well.

Hearing this, the Celtic board swung into action and finally secured the services of Adam Idah, who along with other new permanent signing Paulo Bernardo, combined a few weeks ago to win a double for Celtic.

Try before you buy suited both players and the club, and around £12m later everyone should be happy.

The board deserve a bit of praise for their skilful negotiation with Norwich, where it seems they have not only met the asking price, but chucked in a few add ons and a sell on fee as well.

However, had the bloke from Royal Antwerp not been injured, one suspects the price for Idah would not have been so high….

What doesn’t help, however, is the endless stream of fans complaining that Celtic have the money and should spend it. That kind of pressure affects negotiations and also gives the likes of Norwich a little bit of a heads up when they plan their own arguments…

Like the clowns who trumpet the free money and so on for refugees, which then gets printed in the Express and Mail, and vice versa, which serve only as a sort of holiday brochure for those poor sods selling everything they have to get a seat on a dinghy.

I digress…..but just as the media have an agenda in the world of politics, and play social media accordingly, maybe we should be a wee bit wiser to their tricks on humble Celtic fans.

With Matt O’Riley being hawked around Europe by all but Matt O’Riley and Celtic, the feeling is that a deal to sell him may have been arranged, if only to pay for the outgoings on Idah and Bernardo, but what they won’t say is the money for Oh and Bosun Lawwal, who joined Stoke City, more or less covers that.

Whether or not O’Riley gets an offer he can’t refuse is out of our hands, but he still has a while to go on his contract, and enjoys working with Rodgers and playing for Celtic. He’s certainly not daft enough to take just any offer that comes along, and he will consider each of them on it’s own merits.

But as far as I can see, there hasn’t been one yet and Rodgers doesn’t want to sell him anyway.

With Ange Postecoglou spending money in exactly the same way Celtic won’t, worries that he may plunder Celtic for any or all of the Japanese trio have eased, and since honour is a major part of their culture anyway, we can probably relax on that front. After all, Shunsuke Nakamura could have gone anywhere, and he was of a similar mindset, and he didn’t.

Although it’s taken probably just over a year, Rodgers has put his stamp on a team that gave the impression they weren’t overly happy with him at first. What was directionless and probably lacking in enthusiasm on the pitch has gradually been turned back into a side that looks like they’re having fun, something which was definitely lacking around twelve months ago.

We’ve a lot more to look forward to than we probably think, though, as ever, i reserve the right to change my mind after the first couple of Champions League games.

Kasper Schmeichal , the badly spelt Danish veteran keeper is an important cog in this new machine, picking up from where joe Hart left off, his experience and enthusiasm is helping the defence, which needed and still needs an old, cool head.

The goalkeeper position is hopefully sorted for the next few seasons, and there may be one or two others here for the long haul.

When Calum MacGregor announced his retirement from international football, that showed his commitment to Celtic, although in fairness he was only joing his Scotland team mates in retirement, as they had quit about halfway through the Germany game.

But we do need more depth in the squad, if we are to make an impact in Europe.

However, given the relative success of “try and buy “, I’d expect a couple of loans as opposed to outright purchases.

Unless we’re waiting on a couple of top class players giving us the nod, and in all honesty if they’re hanging around waiting for something better they can take the proverbial flying fuck at a rolling doughnut, then we will find a couple of players in, either youngsters who are surplus to requirements at their current club…which used to be Manchester City when the Younger Lawwell did the planning…..or anyone else that is fed up with Benfica.

Though Benfica must be fed up with us just now.

With Champions League rules limiting non Scots, we may be forced to shop locally, especially as currently we are very light on local players…..that’s why Scott Bain is still around.

Well, probably why he’s still around.  Him not being very good could be another.

To build a team to compete at the highest level takes time, and probably money, neither of which Rodgers has in abundance.

Under Postecoglou, we seemed to be getting somewhere, the margins were becoming increasingly finer, and there was a feeling that we weren’t too far away.

We’re probably still , european wise, at the first and most basic stage, but there is evidence to suggest that we’re moving forward.

It’s not a matter of getting in top quality players, although that would help, and they probably wouldn’t want to come anyway, and even if they did they would demand wages that would disrupt any feelings of unity in the dressing room.

Even finding a quality back up player is going to be more or less impossible, Adam Idah being the exception, and that’s probably why we paid a little bit more for him than we wanted to, he’s the man for the job, and he’s already shown that.

Which is another reason to suspect a couple of loans might be next on the managers list.

We may not like it, but both on and off the field, it’s working.

Last week, we had this…

I think you’re too lenient on the Board. They’ve (or rather HE) have/has a huge amount of history here and none of it is good and our 2nd half performance was awful against Hibs. I felt if they manage to score once they’ll probably do so again and we drop points. Let’s not pretend otherwise. I hope there’s more to come in this window as we’re short on cover all over the place.

While I agree that we would all like our transfer targets in for a full preseason I understand that that is not always possible, but the issue that I have is that whoever did the Idah loan deal dropped a big bollock in that they did not include a buy clause at the end of the loan deal. If they had I can only speculate but can’t imagine that we would be paying anywhere near the £8.5m plus add ons quoted.

Could it be that we were just as crap and last minute in the last transfer window that Norwich refused the option to buy aspect and we were desperate so accepted it at the time? In other words it may be a deeper issue. I often wonder if Lawwal and the board still thinks the Sharp Suited Man approach of the naughties still works when in fact things have changed dramatically since those days and the club haven’t moved with the times.
‘We tried really hard but just couldn’t get them over the lines they are oft heard to bleat – maybe that’s true but what if they are trying really hard using the wrong methods?

Ralph think you got the diary right on most things from the Facists against refugees to the boo boys moving from Taylor to Scales.
I was critical of Hatate but I think he is a smashing player. It is the continual homing in on the same players makes me wonder is it coming from genuine supporters. Peter Grant, Boyata and Forrest got it week in week out.
Some supporters only want exotic imports. You wonder how a Lawal or Kelly would get time to settle. The club has spent big but we have two players who made a contribution last season, they will settle quickly. It is daft to demand young talent gets a chance at the time we should spend big. Brendan is shaping his squad, I hope he adds two more.

Ideally a few more additions will come to the playing squad, but I do like the idea of more loan signings provided they come with options to buy at the end of the season a-la Bernardo, Jota, and CCV. For the kind of money players of that caliber cost both in transfer fees and wages, It has the potential to be a real blow to Celtic’s balance sheet and future income statements (read: UEFA FFP compliance) if the player doesn’t work out and is another Burke or Barkas. Loan with option to buy essentially gives the club a mulligan and the ability to undo the deal at the end of the season if the player doesn’t work out. From a pure risk management standpoint these kinds of deals are absolutely fantastic, particularly if the players are really young and don’t have a long track record of playing at Champions League (or Premier League) level. I kind of wonder if there aren’t some deals being discussed in the background with Manchester City for one or more of their academy players… the last one we got from them turned out to be okay.

And last thought: I wonder if going to Chelsea and trying to bring in one of their players on loan wouldn’t be a crazy idea. Their squad is bloated beyond belief, and a lot of those players are costing them a small fortune and can’t even get on the bench because of their squad size. As long as the financial arrangements (wages, loan fee, purchase option if applicable) make sense for all parties of course.

Hi Ralph..how ye doin mate.
See an old Celt Brian McClair mentioning he thinks we should be signing Ryan Porteous transfermarket value(€3.00m)and Luke McCowan(€600k).I like both players and agree with Choccy.Porteous has that Broony attitude that Brendan could reel in just enough to still be effective..he passes very well and is strong in the tackle and in the air.Luke McCowan has impressed each time iv seen him..again a great attitude, always available for ball and excellent vision and first touch.Theres a left back at Copenhagen,Birger Melling(€3.00m), who im sure James Forrest will try to forget as he never gave him a look in at Celtic Park when Rosenberg last visited.i thought the guy was MOTM.he’s 29 now but still plays for Norway.just a thought

Don’t see many agreeing about Porteous but but think he could do a job for us.

No offence to Ralph and others but this article could be accurately titled “Why Celtic fail in Europe”

When (yes, its still not over the line) he signs then hopefully Idah can be a major success on the pitch but that won’t detract from such an awful, dysfunctional performance from the totally unfit recruitment team.

Lest we forget, he’s filling the vacancy created when Giakoumakis left, 18 months ago. The fact that we persisted with a clearly not up to it Oh for 12 nonths, is wretched.

In January, Idah had been bumped down to 5th choice at Norwich and was surplus to requirements, as he’d been there for several years without consolidating a 1st team place. He was their Mikey Johnstone.

I would’ve thought a fee of £2-3m would’ve been enough to buy him then, as there were no other interested parties, including Norwich.

Fair enough, we wanted to ‘try before you buy’ but that only works if a fee is set at the outset, otherwise you stupidly bid up the price that you end up paying. Dumb.

Over the summer, it was clear that Norwich had an unwanted, unhappy player but only 1 suitor for his services, so you can’t have a bidding war in that instance, can you? Unfortunately, if the suitor is Celtic then that’s what you get. Any professional run club would’ve seriously pursued other targets, which would’ve concentrated minds at Norwich but that’s not the way we roll.

So, it seems like we’ll have expended a lot of time and money (almost £10m for a 5th choice lower English league player).

Of course, we’re ‘rolling in it’ so does it matter that we’ve spent a significant sum of our surplus cash?

I think it does, because we’re only going to spend a finite amount and the excess spent won’t be available for other signings.

It also needs to be stressed that we’ve not improved the team and only replaced 2 goalkeepers and converted 2 loans to permanent signings. We’ve also got rid of about a half dozen squad players without replacement.

We don’t need more squad depth for Europe, we need proven 1st team quality, if we’re to improve on our dire record of the past few seasons. That’s what the current and former managers have demanded but unfortunately, they don’t call the shots.

I suspect the board will drag out O’Riley’s departure to the last minute to extract a £1m or £2m more for a ‘record fee’, which will then leave us insufficient time to prepare for Europe.

Financially, we’ll be a stunning success. In Europe, we’ll be in danger of becoming a permanent embarassment.

Too much money for Idah. Remember how the fans greeted his arrival in January? Most thought he was a cheap option. You certainly can’t say that about him now and all based on half a season of games.

Not saying Idah’s a diddy but 9million for a back up striker who was only here for six months? I feel sure there must have been better value for that money than a guy who was warming the bench at a side like Norwich. Anyway, I’ll be glad to be eating my words if he works out.

A Chernobyl experiment fails again, bit like the Crumbledome repairs.

Too many supporters have had it to good for so long, when u go to a game at Celtic Park come the eighty minute mark masses start to leave. These are probably the same that whinge about the team, the manager, the board, the food, you name it they moan. Do they want to follow the example of Murraymint, look where that needed up, the issue that Celtic Football club has, is the quality of the league that provides opposition.

The Cha

I really don’t understand this attitude.

We’ve been very poor in Europe for over a decade but we’ve ‘had it to good for so long’.

Its also the case that all of the investment into the club comes from the fans, which enables a successful domestic team, garnering increased sponsorship etc.

Yet, despite funding/bankrolling the club, fans have no right to criticise poor performances, on field in Europe and off-field in recruitment etc.

In contrast, the board put in nothing and take out a pretty penny but shall not be criticised.

The reference to Murray is also wide of the mark, no one wants to spend money we don’t have but spend that that we do have to improve the team, especially in Europe.

The quality of the league we play in almost guarantees us Champions League football, the easiest qualifying route of any team on Europe.
