Celtic Diary July 23 2024: Butterflies Collecting ?

Apologies for the gap of several days between the last Diary and this one, but I forgot my login details, and then forgot where I’d put them.

But I’ve found them now, and have put them somewhere safe.

One or two supporters have began to get increasingly nervous about the lack of incoming players in this transfer window, and since the object of the exercise is to be stronger when we come out of it than we were when we went in, there is perhaps some justification for it.

Especially when you factor in the struggles of our neighbours over the river.  We’ve seen this movie before, the one where we do just enough to win our league and our European memories are restricted to good atmospheres as opposed to good results.

Are we right to be worried?

Given previous windows, especially when one considers the speed with which Ange Postecoglou did his business, then probably.

But what are we worried about ?

So far, we have lost several first team players, such as Hart.

Well.

Just Hart, when you think about it.

Oh, Vata, Haksanawhateverhisnamewas, Tilio and Montgomery back out on loan, Johnny Kenny is still on his original loan, and doing well.

Let’s be honest, talented professionals one and all but hardly something to worry about.

Hart has been replaced by two goalkeepers, an experienced international and a promising young international.

Not much to moan about there.

The real issue seems to surround Bernardo , where it’s claimed a deal has been done, although we’ve yet to see actual evidence.

Perhaps, as one intoxicated individual told us, his arrival depends on the exit of Matt O’Riley, which also seems to be a concern for the support. If this is the case, then another plan has been executed which seems to have been in place for a while.

The support seems more concerned about having a quality replacement for Bernardo whatever happens to O’Riley.

The reality is that real quality will not come to be a back up, which means they would have to displace a first team player.

So Bernardo would instead be an understudy to another player, despite having done his twelve months apprenticeship.

You can see the delicate balance needed when bringing in new players…it only takes one wrong ‘un to upset the equilibrium of a dressing room….and signing players just for the sake of it becomes self defeating.

Should O’Riley go, and it will not be for pennies, then Bernado will move up a place, and another apprentice will either be promoted …hence Lawal and Holm  getting  starts and the same applies to the defence…..or brought in, probably on loan, to get used to the club.

It’s worked over the last few years, both on the field and financially.

But only up to a certain point.

If the club wants to compete at a serious level then overall quality has to be stepped up, and the difficulty there is that quality players tend to wait out the window to see what’s on offer.

We’ll just have to be patient and trust the management and recruitment teams.

Which explains the butterflies….

Elsewhere, and by that I mean Lalaland, where the little pixies live, the problems at Ibrox Stadium won’t go away.

Back in December 2016, the Diary noted;

….stories circulating that Ibrox is again in a state of disrepair, prompting some supporters to decide not to go anywhere near the place on Saturday.

Me, for instance. And quite a few others I know.

The word on the street, courtesy of Irish reporter Phil MacGhiollabhan, is that the club will put nets under the roof to catch any bits that fall off, but not until after the game, as presumably the structure won’t become unsafe until Sunday.

Which means they think all the noise and jumping about will knacker it further, or, more worryingly, it means the place is already fecked and they need the money from the game to pay for repairs.

You know, in the way a similar club once needed European revenue to stave off administration.

We can only hope that the story has been fed to MacGhiollabhan to undermine his credibility, and its completely false. He’d be happy with that, but he also has a tendency to be rather accurate where the big stories around Ibrox are concerned.

Whilst Celtic have said they are aware of the rumours, it appears they are willing to take the Ibrox clubs word on the safety of the ground, and in fairness, there’s little else they can do.

These days, the big hoose is shut.

Some steel didn’t turn up, and someone got sacked. It was in all the papers.

Except, we never found out who got sacked.

We never found out what steel never turned up, what it was for, why it was late, when it will arrived and who they had ordered it from.

Oddly enough, they didn’t try to source any from anywhere else.

what’s not so strange is that no one in the media has asked any of those questions.

Maybe they have, and they’ve not been given answers, which is pushing it a bit when iot comes to giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I’m trying to be fair and open minded.

As it stands, ( or falls down ..lol ) Ibrox cannot be used and no one knows why.

Yet eight years ago, they were thinking of putting nets under the roof to catch falling bits of whatever was falling.

Nothing has been done about it, and it looks like nothing will.

There are, of course, several theories floating around, as tends to be the case when no one wants to tell the truth, some of which are borderline bizarre…such as the one about some steel being late…..and some which may hold a little more water than others, such as the one about the concrete….

Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete was quite popular between the 1950s and 1980s. In short, it had big holes in it , which should have made it stronger, but as concrete is porous, it allows water in, then it wears away over time as anything does when water runs over consistently.

It’s why several buildings, such as schools, have had to have work done on them to improve safety.

I asked an expert if Ibrox was built of this stuff, or at least had quite a bit of it in there, and he replied ;

How the fuck should I know ? I’m an accountant ”

Well, I think we’ve all had enough of experts, so we’ll go with a somewhat soaked seer who says he clearly remembers delivering sevral hundred tons of the stuff to Ibrox when it was being rebuilt.

And what’s more, he clearly remembers warning them that they were doing it on the cheap and within fifty years they’d be playing at Hampden.

He was told in no uncertain terms that the club would be dead by then so it didn’t matter.

Then Charlie Green bought it on the cheap, largely because the place was about to fall down, and he didn’t give a toss either becuase he knew he’d be out of there soon.

He might have been drunk and perhaps exaggerrating a bit…well, a lot, but incapable of coherent thought or not, he may have had a point.

Of course, simply opening up to the media and telling the truth is also an option for the beleaguered Ibrox board, but that isn;t going to happen soon….perhaps because they, too, in the old Ibrox tradition, know they won’t be there for very long either.

A lot of people are misremembering what a Clusterduck the first transfer window under Ange was like. That window was a horror show until the last 7-10 days. Ange even publicly complained about not getting the players he needed AFTER THE SEASON HAD STARTED, and the CEO was effectively fired soon thereafter. Mind, this year doesn’t seem to be any great improvement beyond replacing Joe Hart, but what we’re seeing is hardly some regression from what it’s been like for the better part of a decade-plus.

My 2¢ on the matter is that we have a title winning squad, almost all of whom (sans Hart and maybe O’Riley) have returned for this campaign. I’m not content to stand still, but lack of incoming transfers in mid July is hardly a crisis. It’s going to take quality players to improve this squad, and at the prices Celtic are willing to pay, that’s going to require patience to get the deals across the line. Looking at the fixture list, there’s 3 competitive matches before the window closes: home to Kilmarnock, away to Hibs, and away to St. Mirren. The current squad is more than capable of comfortably getting 9 points against those 3 opponents. If waiting until the last week to get deals done means that we get better players than the ones who are willing to sign today, then waiting is the right decision IMO. Having the right players for the last 35 league matches (plus Champions League and two cup competitions) is far more important than getting warm bodies in – who we may regret signing by October – for the first 3 matches. But above all, I trust Brendan to get these decisions right provided he’s the one actually empowered to make the final decisions.

Trying to bed in new players after the season has started is a damned sight more difficult that getting them in pre Season and bonded, getting them match fit and identifying any issues, minor injuries etc. Even harder still is trying to get them settled into their domestic / family setups when the pressure is on them to hit the ground running ‘3 seconds ‘after the starting gun goes off.

Arse to elbow as usual.

The been counters don’t want them in early in the window as that means paying them from day 1.

Lawwell’s DNA is in every strand of the Club’s systems and processes.Every Senior Official recruited by him. They know what he wants. How and when he wants it. Until he’s off the premises for good the Celtic Hierarchy will be cast in his likeness and impervious to change.

Bedding the players in is a valid concern, but that shouldn’t be the overriding factor here. And I’m not a huge fan of Lawwell, but I don’t think the slow start to the transfer window is his doing (missing out on some potential targets altogether because he’s too cheap to pay for quality is another matter entirely – that absolutely IS his fault!). The reality here is that players who are good enough to walk into Celtic and be good enough to displace a current starting player are going to have ambitions of playing in a better (read: more lucrative) league. That’s just the reality of the SPFL and the economics Celtic face. The players who will enthusiastically jump at the opportunity to join Celtic in mid-July realistically have no shot at ever reaching that level in the future and should be avoided, generally speaking.

Look at the signing dates of the current players or those who have recently left: Holm, Tilio, Bernabei, Liam Shaw, Yang, Iwata, Kwon, and Nawrocki were all signed in July. Complete waste of money – every one of them. But at least they were bedded in to rot on the bench for opening day and collect a wage for 5 years! In contrast, the players who were signed in the last week of the August transfer window are: Haksabanovic, Scales, Turnbull, Palma, CCV, and Jota. Not a 100% hit rate to be sure, but that list of players signed in the last week of the window looks a million times better than those signed in July.

Given the choice of signing someone like Tilio, Holm, Yang, or Nawrocki right now or waiting and being able to sign a better quality of player a month from now, it’s not even a close decision. It is exceptionally rare that players signed in July don’t end up being a colossal mistake waste of money. History has shown that the current squad is already better than the kinds of players Celtic have signed in July. Signing more bad players to long term contracts should be avoided, and lack of transfer activity right now I would argue is a GOOD thing because it means lessons have been learned and current decision makers (whether that’s Brendan, Peter, or the CEO) aren’t making the same mistakes as they have in the past.

That’s an interesting observation on when players are signed. Perhaps there’s still some hope then if we don’t rush into hasty decisions.

We had Idah and Bernardo at the club as well as the 2 mentioned.
As every day goes by it looks less and less that those two will be donning the hoops anytime soon.
Our fckn useless board don’t give a shit about the manager’s ambitions at Celtic, the fans are shafted every spring when STs are to be sold with empty promises coming and going and lastly the fans’ European ambitions are again ignored.
The ONLY way this will change is to stop buying STs, which will never happen, so our board will carry on as ever.
When we receive this season’s CL money there will be c.£160m in the bank, not one top or ambitious european club run with that kind of bank balance, they spend it on the team to improve!!!!!

Very good comment but there’s more than one way to skin a cat or a CEO or Chairman!

Justshatered

Reply to  Benjamin

The CEO went but more importantly Lawwell had also gone. The next two windows we had players in before the windows even opened. Then the Dark Lord returned and since then every window has been the same.
People continually say the Chairman is an honorary post as if Celtic operates in a normal manner. Newsflash: we don’t and cannot while he is anywhere near the place. For example a normal organisation would not have a CEO removed after an internal inquiry and then appoint that very same person as Chairman six months later.
This under investment has gone on long enough. It demoralised the entire club and causes needless divisions among the support. Meanwhile bonuses continue to be paid to the Board. Here is an idea, why don’t we focus the Board’s minds by telling them that no bonuses will be paid if we ro not win the league.

The Ibrox chairman told us why
The roofs won’t fall down from the sky
And from this fact it’s very plain
Don’t go to Ibrox with your wean
A brick, a bolt, a bar, a girder
Might crush your skulls
It’s bluenose murder!
And even stupid huns can savvy
You’re probably best locked in the lavvie
At Ibrox half the fans or more
Are shitting themselves ’til their arse is sore
So let your watchword be ‘take care’
If you’re a zombie, hun or bear
And wear a hard hat on your head
Lest, like the club, you end up dead

Reply to  BJF

We also lost Giomakis, Juranovic and going back to what Ange had to rebuild, we lost Ajer, Edouard and Christie.

That’s a hell of a lot of quality and I doubt if we’ve replaced all of it.

Also, that lost quality wasn’t good enough for Europe, so needed added to or improved on and not lessened.

We also need to acknowledge that transfer windows are simply for registering players and scouting/recruitment should be year round activities, ready to put into action when windows open (witness Hatate/Maeda signings).

Others have mentioned the drawbacks of signing players last minute (not fit, not integrated, not Euro ready etc) but we also need to add that what you usually get is other teams cast-offs, unwanted players etc and not prized assets.

Yes, you can sometimes get a good bargain, uncover a nugget etc in the remainder/leftover bins but that’s the exception and not something that a club with the muscle of Celtic needs or should be doing.

Watched the game as I’m on holiday. Nodded off a couple of times so a merlot stained opinion. I’m not a fan of modern refereeing when your first missed tackle is a yellow but reflecting on how it would be in SPFL if every wee currant bun that dines out on kicking us would fare in a game played austensibly with skill rather than aggression? Loved guys like Alan Thomson but that day is done. Except for our local opposition.

Didn’t see it but pleasatly surprised by the result.

Not getting carried away, as only pre-season, against under-strength Manchester City (Beeb report), who could only rely on inferior players like Haaland, Grealish, Phillips, Lewis and Bobb.

Hopefully the up-tick in mood with the last 2 games will act as a laxative and get much needed signings unblocked.

In other news, Dinamo Kiev spanked Partizan Belgrade 6-2 in 1st leg and are in pole position to become Hampden Heroes.

I must admit I came on here looking only for positive news regarding new recruits to our 1st team squad. I hadn’t bargained for a pile of crap, including much about ‘them’ almost inferring the old “two cheeks of the same arse” craic, which we’re NOT. (‘they’ died in 2012, remember?)

Great result last night with quite a few encouraging signs. The goalkeeping situation appears to be sorted but other quality signings are badly needed soon. Looking forward to catching the Chelsea game in the pub on Saturday night.
Btw, I believe we had a top secret closed doors friendly against Burnley shortly before the Bhoys flew out to the States. Does anyone know how that game ended up?

For those more temperant drinkers, Celtic TV are doing a PPV for £9 (ko 9pm BST). Seems a lot for a pre-season friendly (City charge £5pm, which would’ve picked up last night’s game but perhaps they’ve got dodgy subsidies underpinning this, perish the thought).

The only reference I’ve seen to Burnley game was the following, where we were rumoured to have won 301 with Maeda and Hatate taking part.

How’s it goin’ Charlie? Aye, the boy Dodgson did pretty well at Dundee in the second half of last season but has just signed a new deal to keep him at Burnley for a few years. I’d prefer us to bring in a new LB on a permanent deal or at least with an option to buy if it has to be a loan. We’ve got a couple of young LBs coming through (Frame and Anderson) who might well turn out to be good yins but I reckon they need another year or so to develop before becoming serious first team material. Enjoy the Chelsea game the night bro!

We’ve been linked again “Celtic pushing to sign Bueno on loan” according to Beeb.

According to his wiki page, he’s played in 21 league games in each of the last 2 seasons. Unfortunately, it doesn’t state whether these were starts or subs.

Amusingly, to me, in contains the following update that’ll sadly get deleted:

July 2024 Bueno made his intentions clear he wished to join the sporting wing and play his part in the republican movement, he also was quoted advising the orange order to “take a tent”

Seems a decent enough prospect but Wolves won’t offer any option to buy on any loan deal and a straight purchase is definitely not on the cards either. Like the name though. Here at Valencia CF they’ve got a lively young forward with a similar name, Hugo Duro, which sort of shows you’ve got to be both ‘good’ and ‘hard’ to make it in football,

This was a great old ETims blog, discussion, argument and debate!

With some modicum of sense also, which is aye too rare in this modern world.

Now I myself

I was thinking, my son used to play this song called Butterfly Collector, by The Jam, iirc …

Is this by any chance the reference here or am I getting confused with the extra largesse of the Pamela Anderson?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference, as I’m sure we all know, although some idiots never will.

At least we’re all well, or we’ll enough, which is funny as I’d close family burn in Well Street, now sadky gibe.

Still, Hail Hail, if only we’d friends now here, as the past is now over and too few are the scenes between the old ones as the new way asserts itself upon us, if anyone who watched that Olympic ceremony last night with the white horseman can testify.

Next up is the red, green & black, just like the Palestine flag, so God alone knows what they have in store for us, though I’ve heard some terrible beyond horrible rumours about these Protocols of Zion everyone seems to ve talking about.

You can read it for yourself sure, as my wife has arthritis and I myself suffer from terrible terrible piles, piles without end, but that has nothing to do with supporting the famous Glasgo Celtic, thighs my wife, and my wives’ thighs, American an sexpot sexology sufferer test she is, would be more than apt to disagree with that, though sometimes she likes to swing the other way, apropos as to where I am, if that helps.

I try not ti create trouble but I one tine heard that God created Man, and when He saw that he was happy he created a woman to mess everything up, though I can’t speak fir that as I wasn’t there and nit were any if us I have serious doubts if any if them were, if ever.

History is written by the victors after all and despite my six decades and over 50 years of studying I can’t find anything else but absolute useless lying nonsense.

My fifty cents, after some ‘keyboard warrior’ challenged me the other day.

If he met me in the pub he wouldn’t be so bold, this ‘Frank Wright’, I’ll tell you that, nighnon 90 years old or not.

These bootlicking youngsters in their 60s and 70s couldn’t lick my generations shies unless we forced them as they’re so up their own baleful arses that they’ve no idea what it once looked like, though they’ll learn soon enough, if it’s not bloody here already, is it not?

Bloody Frank Wright, a fair swift boot up his arse he’ll be getting, from myself, the young fellas and the grand grand grand fellas an all, if they find out.

I only hope they’re not looking in as they’re terrible sharp in tracking folk on these computers nowadays, so I demand that Frank Lloyd Wright come out and fight me like a man, this non entity on this blog, before insulting me, and me only after sending a dozens messages and less than half of them got through!

Try living in North America, Frank Lloyd Wright, where the people are starving and ting and being killed off by the minute, as the last four years programme showed, and let’s we how smug you are then.

Then we’ll see, even if you cannot, you snidey little man you!

My grandfathers fought the wars fir fools like you and so did yours and theirs, you pompous unctuous little horror story you.

Why, if this was the real world you would never say that to the likes of me, you little self indulgent self important monster you.

No concept of respect is the problem nowadays and and this bill and unctuous Frank Lloyd Wright should try living the life in my shoes, the arrogant little cheeky bastard, my.

Anytime, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Well, as pre-season games go, that was a decent watch tonight. Very close to our best starting 11 and some classy stuff from MOR and REO and Kasper looked decent. I’m afraid tho’ there was further evidence that Greg Taylor and Liam Scales are not really Celtic quality. We could’ve conceded at least 2 in the opening 15 minutes and yet went one up but we’ll pay in Europe if we don’t sort that defence out. Anyway, very satisfying to gub Chelsea tonight and score a dozen goals in 3 games and get 3 victories against top opposition.

PS, I hope TF that CCV isn’t injured as he took a knock and then went off a bit later, early 2nd half. I think he’s one we cannot afford to lose for any time at all really.

Didn’t see the game and another pleasing result.

I think that was CCV’s first pre-season game so, I assume, it was always the plan for him not to play the full game.

Hopefully, that was all it was and not another injury.

Hopefully indeed Cha and it was his 1st game so I’ll join you in hoping he wasn’t hurt.
We were pretty much outclassed in the first 10 to 15 minutes IMHO and lucky not to concede but after Matt’s classy goal we grew into it and flourished at times. Amazingly when a load of young guys came on, Anderson 1st and then a few including Donovan, Turley, Holm, Lawal (sounds too much like my arch-enemy but looks a player) and more, they really looked good, aggressive and going for it without the god-awful side-side-back crap. Yes, it was a good watch and a great result. We need more aggression and forward play (thinking) in the transfer market and, if so, we can be a joy to watch whilst winning matches with style. After all, it’s what ‘being Celtic’ is all about. HH

An entertaining game with sheer brilliance and clamorous errors in equal measure. Particularly pleased with our ball distribution from the back and the danger we caused them on the counter, not to mention Kasper Schmeichel’s performance between the sticks. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he turned out to be one of our best ever signings. Imagine if he can keep this form up and stay with us for another 3 years! Certainly not out of the question.

If he turns out to be half as good as the £30m rated Butland then that’ll do me. 😉

Butthole’s confidence has been shot since that cup final and no fewer than 4 goals flew in his net last night. Whit wis he daein’? Doubt if the cheats would get much more than 28 mill for him now. 😉

Another one from that dark club that is progressively rotting away from the inside and getting worse and worse as time goes on. Talking of which, expect Clement’s inane drivel to become ever more frequent and ever more extreme as the new season kicks on, until he’s finally put out of his misery.
