Celtic Diary Wednesday July 17: A New Direction ?

The first Celtic player to score in this seasons Champions League is Johnny Kenny, on loan at Shamrock Rovers, who beat Vikingur Reykjavik 2-1 last night in Dublin.

That gave them a 2-1 win on aggregate and they now face Sparta Prague in the next round, after which they’ll drop into the Europa League.

Whatever way you look at it, we have the luxury of a champions League level goalscorer out on loan.

So if we don’t get Adam Idah we can always bring him back.

Three players are in, with Idah still either under negotiation or not, depending on who you believe, but the switch of attention to the fellow from Antwerp could well be an indication Celtic have dropped their interest in the Norwich forward.

The squad have flown out to the US, and as expected, Matt O’Riley was on the plane.

Image

That means he isn’t angling for a move, and no one has put a bid in that Celtic are taking seriously. Lawwell wouldn’t pay someones fare halfway round the world if he wanted out.

Paolo Bernardo is happy enough with his deal it seems, reported in Portugal as being around £16,000 a week, though the clubs are still arguing over percentages of a future sale, with Benfica clearly remembering how much Jota went for.

Viljami Sinisamo is done and dusted, he joins as back up keeper from Aston Villa, and despite a crude video of a couple of his mistakes he made, presumably when he was in his school team, the reaction from Exeter City  , where he was on loan, and Aston villa fans , suggests he is certainly one with potential.

And he’s a likeable lad as well.

In fact, he was keen enough to get ready for the trip to america before the deal was announced.

Celtic TV has an interview with him, and he went through the usual niceties of being excited about joining a big club, but stopped short of saying he used to watch our games growing up in Finland.

At least the weather won’t bother him. Compared to the Baltic state, where it really is baltic, Glasgow is a virtually a tropical paradise.

Kasper Schmeichel hasn’t had his medical yet, but it isn’t seen as a problem.

Speaking of Celtic TV, if you subscribe to them there’s all sorts of footage from the current tour. In one fascinating clip there was film taken of a plane window, and another shows the players walking into a hotel.

Mind you, the blue chip signing may be closer than we think….

Image

And Fabrizio Romano, a journalist who doesn’t work in Scotland, added….

Aston Villa want more than initial €55m bid from Al Ittihad for Moussa Diaby. He’s considered as important player by Unai Emery, talks will continue with Al Ittihad. More round of talks are also needed on player side in terms of financial/contract agreement.

If this is indicative of Al Ittihads plans for the season, then poor old Jota, who must be feeling that if he fell in a bucket of boobies he’d end up sucking his thumb, might well be available on loan.

Or he could just run away, and grow a beard or something.

Though he’d have to take a wage cut.

Elsewhere, and the deal that allows “rangers ” to play at Hampden in case their own ground falls down has raised a couple of questions.

Not in the mainstream media, obviously, to think they’d want to get involved is naive at best and downright silly at worst.

But since no one is asking any pertinent questions, such as how much they are paying, when they are paying it and where the money is coming from, suspicions of dodgy handshakes in the corridors of power are rising again.

Perhaps we should openly ask them……I’m sure they won’t mind telling us, not just in the interests of transparency and good faith, but because there are around 50 000 Ibrox season book holders who don’t seem to be getting any information from their club, and it’s the responsibility of the governing body as well to keep them informed.
Simply because given that lot’s refusal to accept one or two home truths over the last few years means the dopey feckers will probably turn up at Ibrox anyway for their first home game.
On a more serious note, public acknowledgement of the deal will help to blow away any clouds of doubt surrounding the deal.
Given their previous collusions over the last couple of decades, I wouldn’t be surprised if the SFA/SPFL have sold or leased Hampden to them in a cut price long term deal, as there is still no notice of when the work at Ibrox is to be completed.
Or even what that work actually involves, come to think of it.
In other news, Gareth Southgate, who led his country to two succesive European championship finals, despite playing a style of football that would get football stopped, has resigned as England manager.
Elsewhere, Steve Clarke, who adopted a similar stupifying style gets to stay on, despite none of his players  even scoring a goal, or looking like they might, which led to Scotland being eliminated early, and  looked on by others as the sort of party pack that takes your mind off the serious stuff, keeps his job as Scotland manager.
When there are more capable candidates around such as , well anyone.
Absolutely anyone, in fact.
Here’s a bit of fun…..clearly designed to wind us up.

Bit cheeky of the English…..it’s not like we go on about our only major international trophy that we won around sixty years ago.
As the new season draws closer, one can feel a little more optimistic as each day passes.
Maybe we are investing to move up a level.

There are signs, maybe only small ones, but they are there.

However, having said that, i think we have to go some way to match the optimism shown by this fellow….

Though I think I may have spotted the guy who should be on the end of the phone when clubs ring up to ask how much we want for our players.

Yesterday, we had this….

Jeez, my caption comment is still ‘awaiting approval’ 6 hours late and not the first time it’s happened.

Credit to Rodgers for returning. He was on a hiding to nothing if he had not won the league. He obviously believed he would. I like that confidence. Last close season we lost Starfield, Mooy and Jotta. So far no significant outgoing and 2 keepers in.
Given the disaster that is Homeñess Athletic. What could possibly go wrong? They will probably play better away from the poisonous midden that is Ibrox, full of asbestos and subsidence. Apart from that let us hope for a much better European run.

3? According to the Beeb (I know), its only 1, so are we counting Schmeichel and Bernardo as done deals or have I missed some of our activity in this fast moving window?

Who has your Premiership club brought in & let go?

The new lad might turn out to be good but so far he’s only played for Exeter, so not sure why Villa fans would’ve a view and we’ve signed hot properties from the EPL before without much success.

Hello, Cha, that’s what I’ve been getting but strangely enough I can see your comment on the page, even though it says it’s ‘Awaiting For Approval’, which is grammatically incorrect anyway.

Strange and unpredictable site this but your comment about Celtic and our signings makes a good point.

In other (Celtic) news; Kasper the Friendly Goaltender has finally signed, Bernardo is inching closer, not so Idah but hammered DC United 4-0, so no need for any new faces.

Bring on the City and Chelsea!

Ha.

I wonder if they may have played a weakened team, as they’re in the middle of their season.

Good result but City and Chelsea will be a whole different kettle of fish.

Yeah, tomorrow night’s game should be interesting. City will be without all their internationals that participated in the advanced stages of the Euros and the Americas so will field mostly youngsters, very talented ones though. Let’s see how Scales gets on against Haaland.
