Celtic Diary Monday November 8: A Time And A Place for Everything

At Dens Park yesterday, the minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday was cut short, largely because for some reason, a section of the support doesn;t want to acknowledge the slaughter of the Great War.

Whilst it’s true that the memorial has been hijacked by those with little concern for those who were cajoled into a boys own adventure to protect imperial interests, it’s also true that many men, just like me and you, were butchered on European fields, something that should never have happened and should never happen again.

Thats the point that we’ve been allowed to miss, and therefore the memorial is no longer about remembering, but about arguing over who honours the dead the most.

If there’s a minutes silence to be observed, then observe it. Save your distaste of empires for another time, and not for the game.

I understand that this generation is far removed from that particular catastrophe, and the true horror perhaps escapes them, but then that’s kind of the point of Remembrance Sunday, or at least it used to be.

All any failure to take part does is harm the image of the club, and make the support look, quite frankly, like arseholes.

Keith Jackson of the Record was one of the first to step up. And what’s even worse is that it’s hard to disagree with some of what he says.

Celtic fans’ embarrassing minute’s silence disruption was a toe curling affront to decency

…..what went on before kick-off on Tayside, when a tiresome, hardcore element of the travelling support shouted and bawled their way through a minute’s silence, was a toe-curling affront to human decency and a reminder Celtic have some serious housekeeping to attend to where the club’s reputation is concerned.

Instead of leaving it at that, though, he continued….

That the club opt out of wearing poppies on their shirts is a knee bend to the obnoxious militants who didn’t think twice about doing such damage to their own club on national TV yesterday lunchtime.

I don’t wear a poppy.  Therefore, I’m an obnoxious militant.  And not someone who has tired of the glorification of mindless slaughter, which is what the whole of Novemeber and most of October has seemed to become.

As if it wasn’t embarrassing enough that they could not bring themselves to stay silent out of respect to the dead for 60 seconds, they then opened up a song book which belongs to a very different time and place than 21st century Scotland.

Quite unlike songs which have been getting criticism about immigrants going home or Glasgow streetgangs of the early twentieth century, which you hardly hear these days, unless you happen to listen out for them.

There’s the problem, by allowing the media to harp on about songs of the old country, none of which glorify murder or promote hatred or bigotry, a section of our support is legitimising the real songs of hatred and division in the eyes of nuetrals, and perpetuation the two cheeks of the same arse myth.

So, how about we grow up and show a little bit of respect ?

There are other ways to make our views known, such as, er, throwing twnnis balls onto the pitch.

The point of any protest is to make, well, a point.

And if your protest is greeted by puzzled looks and a “what the fuck was that all about ? ” line, then you’ve failed.

The car park was invented purely for protests, and the pitchfork is there to help get your point across.

Some time after all that, a game of football broke out, and Celtic stormed to a second away win with yet again some wonderful football and great goals.

Thats the sort of stuff we shoud be talking about.

Yeah, we still concede the odd daft goal, and we’re certainly missing Carl Starfelt at the back, as without him, the goals against are more frequent.  Thats because he gets to the ball before joe Hart gets the chance to metaphorically fling one into the net, as he did yesterday, and as he will do again.

Hart is a great leader, and a great organiser, but some practice at catching the ball and a little bit of work on his decision making wouldn;t go amiss.

You’re never too old to learn….

Tony Ralston celebrated his new deal with another solid display, and surely he must rue being around at the same time as Ibrox wonderkid Nathan Paterson, who is ahead of him in the Scotland pecking order.

£20 million rated Paterson is not a reference to his value, by the way, it’s how much the SFA predict he will generate in revenue if Steve Clarke shoe horns him into the national team to keep “rangers ” fans interested, with the added bonus that he’ll never miss a match as he won;t get injured because he can’t get a game for his club ahead of James Tavernier, who remains at Ibrox , along with a few others, because no one else wants him.

The protests yesterday allow the media to further ignore the good things in our game.

Such as the fans managing to compose a song for our exotically named manager, which delighted and surprised him…

“I’d say they did well.

“I thought that would be the biggest challenge: trying to fit Postecoglou into a song.

“But they’ve managed it, and credit to them.”

By re-writing bits of the classic George Michael hit “Last Christmas “, fans have shown originality, creativity and a sense of humour.

Which is what supporting a club is all about.

The style of football being played is a joy to watch, the players in possession has plenty of options and enormous support from team mates at all times, a massive change from the sidieways hesitancy of just a few months ago.

The atmosphere is bouyant, the mood is upbeat, and there is the promise of more to come.

Oh, and the icing on the cake…..

Image

The new club/company over the river continue to rack up debt, and are on record as saying they need £7.5m just to complete the season. some reports indicate a major high street lender is going to help them out, but as usual its short on detail, such as which one.

The bottomless pit of directors money isn’t bottomless, even if the media would have you think otherwise, and sooner or later it will run dry.

Yes, we know that the authorities will shift heaven and earth to save them, and there will be more honest mistakes on the pitch, and some downright dishonesty in our board room.

If we are to let the board know what we think of them, we must do it in straightforward terms, dividing and conquering in much the same way as they divide and conquer the support.

An emphatic and plain message needs to be sent, and more importantly needs to be heard.

Boycott the stalls and shops inside the ground.

Stand next to them, facing away with arms folded in silence. I remember going to Ibrox and seeing this at the pie stalls. It’s more impressive than it sounds.

And you won’t disturb the players concentration, or attract the wrong kind of headlines.

There are great times ahead, but only if we want them.

On Thursday we pondered this….

I’m surprised Jackson didn’t mention the tastelessness of the huns opening up their repertoire on Sunday straight after their minute silence with “Rule Britannia”. Respect for the fallen is a million miles from what that song represents and shows how much rememberance day has been hijacked into a glorification of empire rather than a moment to reflect on past atrocities

Fffsk, the ultras are way out of order ,USING a hoops match to further the issue of objecting to Bernie Higgins being employed by the club ( who hire people)..without asking permission of the fans , most fans over the age of six realise Professor Higgins is NOT wanted in any position at Celtic, but interrupting the players and 95% of the supporters enjoyment is NOT FEKN ON, the ultras are shitting in their own nest and spoiling a day out for the vast majority fans , Matchday is MATCHDAY , let people think for themselves , enjoy the game if possible, and SUPPORT the TEAM

Another decent performance yesterday, rounding off a tough run of games (including H & A wins v Ferencvaros) with almost maximum points. I’ve said here before we MUST stay within 4 points of Sevco until January, beat them and then strengthen to win this league. They are skint and unless it’s a (good) loan deal, they cannot strengthen or buy unless they sell. They are shipping goals and have a tough run of away fixtures coming up and we must keep the pressure on them throughout the coming period of games. Much has been made about them going a goal down and coming back to win games, but they have been fortunate that teams are scoring almost too early against them, Hibs, Motherwell, Ross County. One day it will happen and they won’t come back in the game.

Regarding Joe Hart, on the whole he’s been brilliant for us but he’s always been prone to an absolute howler, his decision making for Dundee’s second was lunacy. It didn’t hurt us yesterday but one day it might.

As a business it is essential to keep ahead of the competition. Competition is great, but what if the competition cheats to get ahead and becomes number one. “What If” the biggest most successful company keeps the opposition in business because it benefits the BIGGER, more successful company? That’s what I see happening with Celtic plc. Swiss Ramble’s excellent looking into the window of Celtic’s business and comparing it to it’s opposition, proves the point, that there is no real business opposition. On player trading and by other means, like merchandising, sponsorship, supporters spending, we are a million years ahead of them, they are teetering on the edge of the abys…. our after tax deficit was around one half of there’s this year alone, in this most difficult year.

Celtic a year of Triumph, a weekly news special published in co-operation with…
The Celtic Football Club. A season that will never be forgotten. It started in May last year – with an unbeaten tour in Bermuda, Canada and the United States. It finished in June this year with a win in Spain over Real Madrid. In between was achieved the most fabulous record of club success. One that may never be equalled. European Cup – Scottish Cup – Scottish League Championship – Scottish League Cup – Glasgow Cup – Scottish Reserve League Cup. 1966 – 67. # The Lisbon Lions.

Where do the authorities get off telling me what I should or should not commemorate? As far as I am aware it’s not a mandatory commemoration. Here’s a radical idea why don’t the government fully fund the poppy appeal, since it was those leeches that sent the servicemen to fight in the these wars. Since when has a football ground become the appropriate place for commemorating anything other than football. Any vaguely famous celebrity now has a good chance of being remembered in silence at football matches these days once they pass on. A nonsense.
Ralph if the place for protest is the carpark it should also be the place for commemorating remembrance day. Put a memorial up to the Celtic players who lost their lives in conflicts around the globe and have the chairman and/or fans lay a wreath before the game. I’d hope that could all get behind commemorating our own. Men like Peter Johnstone.

Come out dear, this is not The future of Scotland

Great read Ralphie, but in relation to Sevco the truth is their VIP fans, note Brondbys comments after their game about the security concerns over these so called VIP fans as the Sevco board advised Brondby. The canker runs from top to bottom, also are these VIP fans funding the entity that calls itself Randers, sorry Rangers.

Regarding the minutes silence debacle, there are people that do not understand what a human being is. Many decent Irishmen, Scots and Celtic supporters were lead to their deaths by a corrupt nation that now wallows in poppies. They are as the so-called poppy Police that demand it should be worn, they do not realise they are the same as the clowns at Ibrokes yesterday parading their toy soldiers and guns.
The British state or Empire has much to answer for, but a few loons baying at the silence only justifies more diarrohea being flung at decent supporters.

Yesterday was the day when politics try to control football . Surely, if buying a Poppy and maintaining silence is not a voluntary event , what is it. We are preached to non stop about the British Soldiers giving up their lives , for freedom of small Nations & our decent people . If we are forced to wear Poppy & maintain silence where is the freedom . People get up on their hind legs & ridicule those who perhaps remember the deeds of British Army ( including Scottish Regiments ) in the N of I when being Catholic was enough to be delayed , maimed or murdered . Now we must remember fallen soldiers , but can’t attempt to bring their murdering colleagues to account in Court

But I must ask since you’re here, what is John Kennedy’s role on the coaching team if not defence coach?

You disputed this claim twice before but refused to elaborate and instead ignored the question.

So what does John Kennedy actually do at Celtic Park if not coach the defence?

And if he’s not defensive coach then who is?

You are aware that the poppy and all that remembrance palaver doesn’t relate solely to World War 1…aren’t you?

The poppy is a symbol, and the month has become an event, to remember all Britain’s oh-so brave soldiers who fought and killed in Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Argentina, Kenya, India and wherever else they put boots on the ground since 1918.

It it was to remember World War 1 alone, perhaps supporters would have less of a problem with it.

There’s nothing Great about war.

But what is great is that Celtic have stopped besmirching the Hoops with that horrid imperial symbol.

Those who died fighting the Kaiser, Hitler and Franco deserve to be honoured all be it the International Brigade probably don’t qualify. Freedom is exercised by guys like James McLean who has a very specific and valid point to make, no one has to wear a poppy.
. Perhaps if the GB had the faintest notion about the real danger Fascism represented they would think things through. Standing respectfully to honour the fallen with a banner making a point about the less praiseworthy elements whether in Ireland, Iraq or Afghanistan would be more acceptable. Ange called it about right as he did in his selection and the teams performances again.

DJ note your comments, do not disagree about respecting the butchers apron, but many were conscripted to fight in so called just and unjust wars. Regarding NI they were not conscripts but soldiers paid by the crown. Too many people do not realise that many that died were forced to fight, these people should be respected, not the British Crown. As for the poppy that is another issue altogether, it is used by the media to flag wave their support and denigrate anyone that opposes it. As for the army in NI they murdered innocent people, but then again the British Army is famous for its arrogance towards what they regard as colonials all over the world, look at the issue inKenya

Why don’t they have a Remembrance Day for the Opium Wars when Britain imported millions of tonnes of raw opium into China so they could wipe out the populace and gain total control of that massive country and therefore the entire East?

Indeed, that could well have been the forerunner for what we see today except now thye just use the media to terrify everyone into being injected with the innumerous toxins in the poison.

Worked then, works now too.
