Celtic Diary Friday May 7: The Players Who Played Us

It may be, and it almost certainly is,  that the board had decided they didn’t want to spend any of the clubs money in retaining the high standards on and off the field, or maybe even improving them.

It may be, and it almost certainly is,   that the board have colluded with the new club/company at Ibrox to ensure that there is a club/company operating out of that place.

It may be, and it almost certainly is,  that to ensure that the board have put the best interests of the shareholders to one side, or possible that they genuinely believe that by perpetuating the same club myth they actually are acting in those interests.

In fact, they may almost certainly have made decisions amounting to gross negligence over the years that played an enormous part in the catastrophic decline that has taken place over the last couple of years….but they don’t put on their boots and take to the field on match day.

The core of the business, results, is delegated to fit, well, mostly, young men, well, mostly, who have shown a level of skill in their chosen profession that had elevated them to a position at a club that had previously won twelve consecutive trophies domestically.

And no matter how you dress it up, they failed , as a unit, when it came to doing their jobs.

We have three goalkeepers in the first team squad. They all had a crack at making the jersey their own this season, and none of them could show the consistency or desire needed.

And lets be honest, none of them inspired confidence as they took it in turns to fling one into the net to liven things up.

Bain Barkas and Hazard.  there’s a one liner there somewhere using those words that sum it all up.

A failure to pick one of them and stick with him , and establishing a proper pecking order has meant all three are not only unsure of who holds the jersey, but have been banned from carrying the coffee back to their table at the Lennoxtoen cafe.

We could argue that they never had a settled defence in front of them, and that the defences they had were sub standard and error prone, but their job is to organise and control that defence, which none of them did.

By not imposing their personality or authority, they added to the confusion.

Frankly, if we sold all three of them and played a sort of backie in -closest to the goal become goalie-set up, we’d probably do much better.

The defence, if I may call it that, has been little more than shambolic, it never operated as a cohesive unit at any point in any game all season. Personnel changes won;t have helped, but with three positions often filled by loannees -Kenny, Laxalt and Duffy, it’s hardly surprising.

Whilst it can be down to coaching, surely at some point the players could have taken the initiative and tried to stop the other team from scoring ?

They could have picked up a man each, or a zone, or even just predicted where the ball was going and make sure one of them was there to meet it.

Instead, they just got in each others way, and looked around befuddled when whichever goalkeeper was on duty picked the ball out of the net.

Of all the defenders we havem, only Stephen Welsh and perhaps Greg Taylor  come out of it with any credit, and their development will only be stunted as there is no one to help them settle in the team.

We don’t have a single experienced and reliable centre half, we have no one willling to impose their personality and authority in the area, and playing midfielders, such as Ajer and Biton, in that position is reminiscent of the days of Brian O’Neil and Tom McAdam.

Yes, they all do okay, but they aren’t defenders. they’re players who did reasonably well every now and again and somehow that meant they were happy to get a game and everyone else was happy that money could be saved.

Keep Taylor and Welsh, the rest can go…although Ajer i’d try as a midfielder. Largely because thats what he is.

And no more loannees. Defenders need trust , understanding and consistency. you can’t get that immediately, and there is no incentive to develop it when you know the loannee is away in a few months.

And if he’s on considerably more money, that isn’t going to help either.

In the past we’ve had defenders that were average, but their hearts and desire were far far stronger, and that led to a meanness and pragmatism that has been missing this season.

And that guile needed to be a wee bit flexible where the rules are concerned has been non existent, but you have to expect that when you have no experienced defenders.

Then there’s the middle of the park, where Celtic have talent in abundance and Scott Brown, the seasoned warhorse who leads by example.

However, they also have Calum McGregor, who left Celtic a while ago, Ryan Christie who thinks he;s bobby charlton but will prbbaly end up at Charlton, and David Turnbull, who can play, wants to play and is effective when he does. but i’m not sure he;s one hundred per cent after his operation, and therefore we may be storing up a wee bit of trouble here.

Lets face it, the medical side of Celtic is not great, and players who have left, Keiran tierney, for example, have spoken of the contrast elsewhere, and how injuries are treated proeprly, with the appropriate rest and recuperation.

At Celtic, you get the feeling that some players get their boots and shorts sent straight to their hospital room for when they can stand up unaided again..

Again, there has been little consistency of selection in this area, and again, no one has dominated the game and directed traffic-except probably sideways- with any sense of purpose.

Scott Brown, on whom the team had relied on, and with great success, over the years, was a little more subdued than he has been, and no one stood up to help him out.

Great teams help eahc other out when things are going badly, and one aspect of Celtic this season has been that no one wanted to take responsibility.

A fact that becomes even more bewildering when you remember there were no fans at games to shout at them…althpugh there were more than a few on social media who vented their anger, which was gleefully picked up by the media, and then read by the players, who seemed to shrink into their shells even more as the games flew by.

The forwards are an unusual bunch, for me the owrst moment of the season was when i realised that we;d actually bought Alben Ajeti , and couldn’t send him back.

Oddsone Edoaurd, a flawed character when he joined from PSG, came apart at the seams as it became obvious he wanted to be elsewhere, and Leigh Griffiths…dear god, if ever a player made a complete arse of a golden opportunity to be a bona fide legend, it’s him.

Patrick Klimala, nicknamed the Tank by team mates in pre season training, showed effort and enterprise, reminding us of john Hartsons strength and the mobility of Henrik Larsson, but that sort of effort wasn’t condoned by team mates, and if you look carefully you’ll see he was largely ignored by them on the pitch….

In summary, very few players played with their hearts this season, Taylor, Welsh, Turnbull, Forrest, when fit, or at least when they told him he was fit, perhaps a few others , such as Christie, and yes, Duffy, tried too hard, but overall should any of them be sold, then i don’t think we’ll miss any of them.

In fact, the club should acknowledge this and when it comes to the awards this year, this guy should sweep the board…

He’s loyal, reliable, faithful and got a lovely shiny coat.

As for the players, they let themselves down.

Managers, directors, coaches, fans, they can all share a wee bit of blame, but ultimately, they neither score or prevent goals.

And goals are what the game is all about.

You’ll notice I mentioned fans there….thats right…you’re getting it next.

Tech Tch Ralph’s Friday blues. I still am not sure what went wrong this season The nonsense that it was all Lenny’s fault, he started and finished the 9, but ran out of road this season. No one saw it coming even if they didn’t care for him. Don’t know a thing about the Board, still think PL will remain there maybe as Chair. Again the trophies wouldn’t suggest incompetence but Section 12 ….. there is something wrong about that.
.I hope Howe comes but clearly he still tied in with Bournemouth or some of his team are. The eight year olds who want their Christmas presents NOW can’t wait, I can. I want the right decision not the quickest.

Shane Duffy has had his loan deal cut short apparently, the big guy has had an awful time of it on the park this season, but he has also lost his father which can effect someone incredibly hard.
Good luck going forward Shane, all the best big fella!

You cannot mention team affairs, without apportioning blame, no team manager should have to put up with accountants determining which players comes in or goes out, that is the crux of the problem, any team manager who puts up with that, is relegated to just being a team coach. There will be no autobiographies coming out from any of these board members, because their legacy is one of failure, it could have, should have been very different. A succession of third rate loan players, an aging captain, failure to invest in quality players, players who just failed the affordability test, a failed team manager and his positioned assistant, gearing up to replace him, when nepotism replaced professionalism. Point the finger at those whose failure it was, the failure to make it the ten IAR, belongs up in the stands, sitting in the comfy seats, hoisted with their own petard, the bomb went off at the 2019 AGM, it was called the 5Way agreement. Roll on July, here’s hoping that our great club returns to being professionally run both on and off the pitch. #Shackles off.

Every orchestra needs a conductor, its the same with every football team. The new DoF will bring we hope, some years of expertise to this crucial position. But its the manager who will be pulling the most important strings, we must get that position 100% right. After criticising the fast track last method of appointing the previous manager, my only concern is to take the time to get it right this time. Good managers can effect change really quickly, instilling confidence into the players. Celtic News is filled with players who could play well for the team, we invested millions on the players that we have, those players leaving will be the Christmas stocking fillers, for purchasing new players enabling the team to move forward quite quickly….

Ajer, a “centre half”…..can’t time a tackle, heid like a biscuit tin…..FFS Des, gie’s a break.
Celtic PLC looked at his stature and DECIDED he would be a centre half, sent on loan to Killie to try to learn the rudiments of being a centre half. HE ISN’T, not even fukkin close.
But he IS a talented footballer and Mid is where he’ll flourish.

Agree, Ajer is no midfielder, doesn’t have the engine, awareness or turning circle. Have it on good authority that Turnbull has no issues and that Christie has been playing for himself for months.

Can you suffer PTSD from your team having a bad season, well not just bad but catastrophic? I still haven’t come to terms with how much of an erse we made of it. How in the name of the wee man has it gone so wrong.

One thing I do know is our player recruitment is dreadful. We have spent good money on players that shouldn’t be anywhere near the team. We needed to strengthen our defence but didn’t. We signed 2 US full backs who couldn’t find Lennoxtown even with Google maps. Why haven’t we developed these guys? We signed them and abandoned them in the lower reaches of US soccer.
If we aren’t developing them, why sign them?

Since Forrest’s injury the team has played narrower than your average Brexiteers mindset. Can someone explain Marian Shved to me? Yes it’s clear he has issues, the Belgian coach chewed him out but now he seems to be making a regular contribution. We just washed our hands of him. Jack Hendry too, by all accounts he’s one of the best defenders in Belgium at the minute. We could have been doing with both of those guys. But who knows we’d probably never have got the best out of them anyway. We can’t get the best out of Griffiths.

Over the years we’ve always had width from our full backs, a real attacking threat. Gemmell, Craig, McGrain, even Morris and Rogan. Most recently with Tierney. We’ve never had any full backs this season worthy of a jersey. Laxalt? Have you ever seen a worse Uruguayan defender? Most defenders from those parts would kick the eyebrows off you. Laxalt looks like he’d rather bore the arse off you about the effects of global warming on wading bird migration in South America. John Joe Kenny, just reiterates my belief that if your name is John Joe you should be a jockey. Have you ever seen a full back lose so many 50/50 challenges. I wouldn’t bet on him in the coin toss.

And Barkas, I’m sure he actually made a save once, it was at Dingwall I’m sure. Since then I don’t think he’s saved anything that was on target, not one. We can blame the coaches etc for a lot of things but for God’s sake Barkas that’s your job, keeping the round thing out the big rectangular thing. Try it I’m sure you’ll like it. Maybe he just can’t do it on a wet Wednesday in Dingwall, or is it the opposite.

Have we got a DoF yet, a manager? For the love of God show us some signs of life for next season Celtic. I think the nurse is on her way back now.

Sorry, if Taylor is a part of the the answer to our problems, they will continue. Being unable to tackle or head the ball are just two faults. Being able to run 70 yards with the ball only for everyone (that’s everyone) to know he’s going to pass it backwards, does not a full-back make. Ditto Laxalt, Boligoli and Kenny.

Darren O’Dea in commentry said it so well. It’s not just that the crosses are killing us. It the fact that no-one stops them coming in.

Sadly, Board, management and players haven’t given a flying f@@k about this season. We just kept on digging the same hole deeper week after week.

That’s it. Back under the bed.

If Welsh and Taylor are the future there are bleak times ahead.

Both no more than ordinary.

Welsh’s main asset is he’s not Shane Duffy
Taylor’s main asset is he’s not Boli Bolingoli.

Fully in – what is says on the tin.
Backy in – nominated guy who plays sweeper and goalie and can come up for corners and then run back like feck although there was often a gentleman’s agreement about big punts into an empty goal.
Spot on – anybody can save it.

I posted this on the other thread but only noticed last night that CELTIC HAD A CHANGE OF OWNER IN 2018.

Full Assignment RC000115952 received on date 30/10/2018 has been recorded, resulting to the change of ownership from Celtic F.C.Limited (id: 218706, country: GB),The Rangers Football Club plc (id: 613657, country: GB) to Celtic F.C.Limited (id: 218706, country: GB),Sevco Scotland Limited (id: 613831, country: GB). The effective date of assignment is 14/06/2012.

Anyone know anything about this ..?

Who owns Celtic?

I’m aware of that, Monti, but in this instance I’m far more concerned with who exactly took over the ‘new ownership’ of Celtic in 2018.

Is it possible that we’ve already been victims of a hostile takeover?

For it clearly stalest in that joint Old Firm quote above that Celtic changed ownership in 2018 and no one has mentioned anything about it.

I don’t think ‘resulting to the change of ownership from Celtic F.C.Limited ‘ is mistaken or picked up wrong, it’s right there in the line in The Old Firm trademark page …

resulting to the change of ownership from Celtic F.C.Limited ‘.

You can see it in context in the full quote above.

They’re telling Celtic changed owner in 2018.

Why can’t any of you understand what that line is telling us?

FFS Gringo, re-read my comment. Celtic FC Limited is NOT Celtic Football Club, the PLC IS, and that’s who’s registered. There are other Celtics including what you’re on about but it’s NOT the football club, just another subsidiary of the PLC. If you can’t handle this okay Pal, but I’ve better things to do than argue the rudiments of Celtic PLC. And breathe……….

The players are easy targets.

Nevertheless, the players are usually not responsible for making decisions about
A. Squad composition, including the drafting in of individuals whose skills are, let’s be charitable, pitiful.
B. Team selection, including playing loan-ins in place of existing squad members whose commitment and skills levels have been developed and demonstrated previously.
C. Team match preparation and coordination. Yes, they can make onfield adjustments IF there’s a plan or system there to adjust in the first place.
D. Key performance targets. And
E. Management and coaching staff.

All of the above are decided by company officers who don’t appear on the field of play. It’s my view that players who have performed extremely well for Celtic have been set up for failure this season and the ludicrous displays in many matches have been due to some players demonstrating their disgust with company management. Granted, some players have seemed to be “swinging the lead” and looking forward to being elsewhere. Others, guys who’ve given great service over several years have shown their contempt for the deliberate crashing of the season by management by spraying passes into the stands, out for corners when forward passes were available, missing open goals from 3 yards &c.

And then if you fondly imagine that maybe the TV pundits might address some of the issues, who was trotted out at Ibrox last week but the dad of one of the board’$ current 3 stooges to bamboozle with BS.

The players receive instructions from their employers. They don’t have to like the instructions and if they have good track records they can show that they don’t like what they’re being told to do.

Two further points.

Indeed it becomes more difficult to extend a long series of title wins but please don’t bracket us with Juventus, probably the most corrupt club in the world.

Rosenborg lifted the Norwegian Title 13 times in a row. That should’ve been Celtic’s target.

A quarter billion quid in Operating Expenses in the PAST 4 YEARS would make a man with a brain in his head realise what’s really happening at Celtic Park.

I’ll repeat that ..

250 million pounds of Celtic FC’s money has been spent in the past 4 years alone.

On what, Duncan?

Do YOU feel like the Celtic support have got a Quarter Of A Billion Quid’s worth of value in that 4 year period?

And you know I can’t show you where the Operating Expenses goes BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ITEMISED.

You know this because you have looked at the Celtic PLC accounts on numerous occasions and you can see that the Operating Expenses are obscured in every way possible and that this lack of clear Itemisation of every penny spent is self evidently covering up where that 84 million a year is actually going.

Because unlike you I don’t deal in theories, Duncan, I deal so
ely in facts and it is a fact as plain as your idiot brain that over One and A Half Billion Pounds has been removed from the Celtic finances in the 25 years of Dermot Desmond’s reign and THAT can easily be proven BY ANYONE simply by adding up the Total in each year’s Operating Expenses, a task which you yourself have already done.

It doesn’t require a head for figures, all it needs is a calculator to add up each year’s Total and you will see that the figure of One and a Half Billion is entirely accurate.

And that, my dim witted soldier boy fool, IS A FACT that even a halfwit like you can verify with your own two eyes.

So go and do it.

I’m being aggressive because I’ve already presented you with the links & proofs on TWO separate occasions and you keep reverting to your stupid ‘conspiracy theorist’ bullsh1t HWEN THE PROOFS ARE IN THE ACCOUNTS THEMSELVES.

Of course they don’t itemise them so I can’t show you where all the money’s going, they hide them instead, and it’s this hiding of the Itemization that creates the problem:

Because I’d theyve gor nothing to hide why do they hide them?

Football is more corrupt than ever and you don’t need me to tell you that once a board of directors become used to their Operating Expenses soaring by 30 to 40 million quid a year AND IT GOES UNNOTICED & UNQUESTIONED then would it really be beyond anyone, far less a money mad billionaire, to dip their hand into the biscuit tin knowing there would be no questions asked nor repercussions after?

How do you think Rangers died and STILL no one is questioning that, in fact, all they’re doing is telling even more lies to cover up Murray’s guilt in that vast rip off.

And you think such greedy actions are beyond the millionaires and billionaire of the Celtic board, that it’s not money that drives them?

Get a grip of yourself.

So this is why I’m being so aggressive.

Footballs, not football anymore, its an investment for the few. For the Celtic small shareholders, it is an emotional investment, nothing more, if you invest in football to make money, you are ‘aff yer heid’. Ask the Thomson family that spent a lot of their fortune investing in Dundee Utd.
The Champions League, is not the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, its money-ball, ask Sheik Monsour, or ask the Russian billionair. Cyclying isn’t cycling, ask Sky, or Lance Armstrong. Their is always cheating, ask William Struth the bigot who managed the Huns, he was a stone – mason, who ran part time and wasn’t averse to moving the length marker posts, to cheat, take the prize money and then eff off, once a cheat, always a cheat. Clippity clop; Is the billionaire pack horse, packed with cash as it rides around football clubs, looking for a safe haven to shelter his cash, it also stores cash for hedge funds, if the share price reaches giddy heights then ‘Eureka’, but that seldom happens. Dermot Desmond IMO is sheltering cash in Celtic, PL is his place-man, the cash protector, but I do believe that DD is enamoured with Celtic, because if he wasn’t, he would find another, better, money making vehicle to shelter his cash. The share price rose from around 100p recently and now sits at 125p, in the crazy world of the money-ball it just needs a whisper of a British league for the share price to rise. Not all Celtic shareholders are in it for the dough, some of the bigger shareholders are doing what DD is doing, gambling that the share price will rise, patience grasshopper, leave it in the shelter, hoping that it grows, if it doesn’t then no worries, something else will become available… Look at other clubs, less rich clubs, who are in football, investing but mainly for their communities, a League Cup win, is manna from heaven.

Desmond is NOT gambling with his Celtic investment.

He’s using it to extract massive dividends from the club year on year and hiding these in the accounts.

This is without mentioning what they’re up to with the Operating Expenses.

They’re sucking the club dry.

ALL shares are a gamble, you have your opinion and I have mine, this is what I read…
Celtic FC has 1,019 employees.
Football and stadium operations – 35.80 million – down 17.24%
Multi media……………………………- 19.39 million – down 12.17%
Merchandising ……………………….- 15.04 million – down 16.78%
Turnover for this year past £70.23 million.
DD s; shareholding 32,772,023 shares 34.7%
He says, “My shares are not for sale, any suggestion that he is not a Celtic fan is contemptible”. “We realise that we have under- performed this year.
Of course he gets some cash every year through a part of his shareholding, do I believe everything he says? – nope, but neither do i believe that they are sucking our club dry, that might be your opinion, but its not mine, my opinion is as i said ^.
and I’m not going to argue about it.

Aye, 666 quid’s worth of value.

Other than that the fans mean less than nothing to them.

So I recently broke my Fibia in one place and my Tibia in 2 places with one of the breaks going into my ankle 7 hours of surgery, a titanium rod in my tibia, plate on my ankle and multiple screws later, I figured I was going to spend more time on my back than an Essex prostitute I downloaded Football Manager 21. The game came out in November with most of the stats decided well before that. I’ll tell you what, when I saw the state of the backroom staff, medical staff and recruitment staff compared to the rest of the league was bloody horrendous. It has taken me she’s to sort that out, I’ve had to replace about 50 percent of the staff with Gavin Strachan being the first out the door. It’s made me wonder if Ralph’s piece on cronyism hit the nail on the head. Rangers had a much better staff coming first in everything with other clubs forcing Celtic into 3rd in many areas. Now I know it’s just a game, but it’s got one of the largest scouting networks out there and is often deemed the closest to actual real player’s ability. If they are half as good at knowing the staff as they are at players we were seriously shafted by our backroom staff.

Oh I just sacked Craig Strachan who is a scout, and a poor one at that. I’m just going to sack everyone with the last name Strachan.

Losing 2 quality keepers for a complete unknown probably cost us 9 to 12 points.
Not signing Toney probably cost us the same.
Title could have been ours.

I did sign Heurelho Gomes on a free for the first season and so far he’s been sensational. Bain and Batman don’t get a look in. They are playing in the U18s and reserves working on their command of area. I signed Ivan Lopez Mendoza RB for free, Ermin Bicakcic CB for £2.7M, sold Edouard for £18M +£2M add-ons with 30% sell on clause, bought Shankland for £1.7M and Nicholas Gioacchini ST £3.2M. Klimala is my top scorer with 5 goals from 24 shots closely followed by Gioacchini with 4 goals from 6 shots (all against Dundee Utd). I’ve got too many injuries and am about to overhaul the medical staff.

No- where did I say that Lawwell’s unpalatable salary, bonus’s, shares in lieu and other unseen benefits was acceptable, some would say that they are obscene. They might be more palatable if they guaranteed silver-wear success and entry to the C.L. Qualifiers every single year, but plainly he hasn’t delivered on that, he has failed that litmus test, so they aren’t. He is though as I said the cash protector for Desmond. Lawwell’s largesse and benefits are more suited to the EPL. which is awash with cash. But they are completely OTT with regards to the SPFL.

Peter Lawwell – Unfit for human consumption.
