Celtic Diary Sunday January 31: Groundhog Days

There has to be a term for it, this stubborn refusal to look facts in the face and carry on, oblivious to all around you that is crashing down.

Oh, there is.

Stupidity.

At the moment it applies to anyone concerned with the day to day running of Celtic.

The board are reluctant to remove a manager who has clearly lost his way, for reasons best known to themselves. Perhaps they want the new man to make his own decisions, but as he won’t be here for another six months, thats probably not the cleverest idea.

Then again, it wouldn’t take long to make a list of this particular boards good ideas.

We’re in a kind of limbo, a purgatory of our own making, everyone knows what needs to be done, but no one appears to have accepted the responsibility of doing it.

Frankly, it gives the impression that no one at the club gives a toss.

Whereas out in the street, the support and the shareholders grow ever restless, bombarded with the gleeful cries of triumphalism, the return of Rangers, and the Old firm rivalry.

After the biggest scandal in sporting history went unpunished, we’re right back where we started, and if that isn’t negligence, then it has to be what they wanted.

Supporters across the country vetoed the authorities plan to place the new entity into the top league, then the second tier and finally they had to start where any new club should start, if you don’t count the regional leagues.

It’s painful enough to see they appear to have got away with it, and one wonders of this seasons negligence-or, indeed, policy-to use the champions league money from next year to bail them out was the plan all along.

Or, of course, and the evidence does favour this view, we’re just shite.

The mixture of players who wanted away and loan players blocking the progression of the next generation, coupled with a manager who doesn’t actually manage and some coaches who can’t coach has led to some piss poor performances on the pitch.

Celtic have lost six games at home this season, and that itself is why there will be no ten in a row, which in itself isn;t the end of the world, but the malaise that has led us here has all the signs of leading us to a catastrophe.

It’s not a catastrophe yet, it’s just a remarkably bad season.

The catastrophe is that no one seems prepared to do anything about it.

Game after game since Ferencvaros put Celitc to the sword last summer, there have been calls for the removal of Neil Lennon, and results alone since that night have supported that call.

For some reason, he’s still here, and there is no sign of any change yet.

Why ?

There is not a single reason to keep him on, which means there must be a reason why they haven;t dismissed him.

An that reason could simply be that there is not yet a replacement in mind, or at least a replacement who could start on Monday.

Or they’re going to let him carry on, and his words yesterday certainly indicate that he thinks he’ll be allowed to carry on…

“I made my frustrations clear after that Ferencvaros game and I don’t think things have changed much since then.

“Has that been part of the problem this season? I would say it’s been one of the elements, yeah.

“There will be a rebuild of some capacity here. Players coming to the end of their contracts may be looking to move on and the club may be looking to move them on.

“Obviously, loan players will be going back. Whether we investigate loaning them again is a discussion for the summer.

“But there will be changes in the squad, there’s no question about that. We’re forward planning
now, absolutely.

“The work is ongoing and it will be prominent again in the summer when we’re looking to bring players in.

“We have already sold a player for a lot of money in Frimpong because we felt it was a good deal for the club. We have to replace him now.

“The only thing that concerns me is how the market is in the summer.

“January has been very quiet and you’re worried it might be the same because we don’t know how financially strong clubs are going to be – or even how our own position is going to look then.

“In terms of rebuilding the squad, that’s always an exciting project for me, to bring in new blood and give the squad that extra impetus and freshness which is always good for everyone.”

He’s living in his own little world, inside his own little head.

Father Ted - Dougal diagram | Father ted, Funny films, British comedy

Unless, of course, he’s been told his job is safe, which surely cannot be the case. This board have shown themselves to be detached from reality themselves, but surely even they haven’t concluded the best thing to do is let the new CEO make his own mind up on Lennon.

Surely they must have realised that should they do that, they won’t shift a single season book.

Even the Lennon CSC here in Staffordshire will be considering a name change to honour someone who has done more for Celtic, with Mo Johnston heading a fairly sarcastic list.

Lennon continued talking, presumably because he thinks, in his own world, he’s making sense… he can;t for instance, understand why anyone would want to leave Celtic, which is  possibly the main reason he hasn’t gone yet….

“It’s a different time to when I was a player.

“The landscape in UK football and at bigger clubs in Europe has changed in the disparity in what we can pay compared to them. That’s grown over the years.

“But the excitement that Celtic brings, the chance to win trophies, compete in Europe and play in front of a passionate crowd is something other clubs can’t offer.

Er, we’re not winning trophies, haven;t competed in Europe for years, and the crowd has been banned because of the plague.

The evidence really is mounting up.

Father Ted - Dougal diagram | Father ted, Funny films, British comedy

there is a lot of noise on social media that Lennon is hanging on for a pay off. Thats not how I see it, his rolling contract of one year means he gets a years pay when he goes.

And genuinely, as misplaced as it may be, I think he wants to be Celtic manager, pure and simple.

But like the husband or wife who clings on when its clear the relationship is over, he has to be told, firmly, but surely, that it’s over.

And maybe even take out a restraining order to keep him away…..

It’s been a bad season, we can’t make excuses, referees, whatever.

Celtic fucked this up themselves.

So its up to them to unfuck it.

Not next week, or next month, or next summer.

There’s a fair bit of work to be done to halt the slide, let alone turn it around, and the sooner that job is underway the better,

The worry is that no one wants to start the process.

As crazy as it sounds, I’m reaching the conclusion that Desmond is actively trolling the support. He wouldn’t be the first billionaire with a dangerously out of control ego. Maybe he’s raging at the criticism he’s taken and is punishing us for it? How else can you explain the “begged him to stay” comments in relation to Lawwell? Even if that’s what he genuinely thought was best, he must (or should) have known that those words were like a red rag to a bull.

In an effort to even things up and complete the fusion with the “partners” at Ibrox he’s going for liquidation, halfers on the European Cup and, more importantly, the Coronation Cup. No need for super Swally as manager: we have our own legendary figure in charge.

Just in a complete state of shock how bad this is getting & the reality of what has just been lost.
I feel so disconnected it’s making me utterly disillusioned.
Neil Lennon is a man i had a connection to, an emotional attachment to a guy who has faced incredible levels of racism & hatred, physical violence & even forced to stop playing for his country of birth all because he played for Celtic.
I’ll never forget his commitment as a player.
As a manager for Celtic football club, Neil Lennon is not delivering & should be sacked today alongwith his backroom team.
John Kennedy looks completely disinterested in tbe dugout & i have no fkn idea what Gavin Strachan does.
In such an important season for the club & support, we could not have fvcked this up more spectacularly, it is bewildering we started this season with players wanting to leave, sub standard players brought in & a complacency from the boardroom in not reading the warning signs & threat from the zombie.
Our team at the start of the season should have been motivated like Ron Jeremy on a Swedish field trip.
Instead they are headless fkn chickens, i feel sorry for Calmac, Turnbull, Ajer & Soro, the rest of them are a combination of cowards, shi@e or simply PISH.
A disgrace to the shirt & the club, they can fvck off with Lennon.

Peter Lawwell is the architect of this spectacular demise, appointed the wrong man then didn’t try to balance that by bringing in a better quality of player.
Interfering with transfers, denying Brendan top targets & part responsible for not qualifying for countless CL group stages, in turn costing the club probably in the region of £200+m.
We keep hearing about how Lawwell is great at number crunching, well let’s just remember how much income has been lost.
He & Lennon are responsible for this, one is going, the other should be gone today.
Lawwell will be remembered by me for being in charge of Celtic, not fighting res 12 & ASSISTING in the rise of Newco, puting the so called ‘ Old Firm ‘ brand before integrity.

” A club like no other ”
” World class in everything we do ”
” I haven’t seen the 5 way agreement ”
” If we paid the living wage it would cost the club 500,000 per year ”

£3.5m a year Lawwell.

Hang your fkn head in shame.

Desmonds statement was an actual disgrace, the support are thinking there is finally some forward thinking with lawell going then read him saying he wanted him to stay. I heard a story on one of the podcasts from a guy close to those circles who said that on the day of the smoking ban in Scotland he walked into the lounge lit a cigar and demanded an ashtray , said he is a thoroughly arrogant individual and the way the board have acted this season would seem to back that up. Apparently after having a contract ready for gus huiddink he walks in and says no , I am putting martin O’Neil in charge, now we have him putting his son on the board . When did celtic football club become the property of dermot Desmond, he should walk out the door with his pal lawell. Keep hearing oh hes the money man he bank rolls this and that , does he? . I would be interested to know just how much of his own cash he has put in . I suspect not very much , the club should never be in the hands of one person or family

Fine post Delbhoy ,

think a lot of fans have forgotten the Hiddink thing ( often wonder ” what if ” particularly re CL ).
I believed Desmond’s plan was a return to those days with a strong “old firm ” , by whatever means .
He’d argue – ” but in those strong “old firm ” days , you had the likes of O’Neill AND Hiddink vying for the Celtic post ; what’s not to like ” –

However , if that is the plan then he seems to have lost control of the vehicle and crashed it with TOO MUCH severity , – ( I posted before that the UNFORSEEN consequence of severity of crash would be the FORCED sacrifice of Lawwell ), – making a strong Celtic unlikely at least in the short term ( every chance of no European football next season ) unless he bankrolls it ( he’s given little past evidence of being willing to do that ).

If the above is wide of the mark then I confess to ( like most onlookers ) having no other idea as to what the eff is going on !

Not trying to make excuses….but Bobby Madden did what Bobby Madden always does…3 times Celtic players being pulled back by the jersey, once inside the box and once when Eddy is running to take part in an attack, plus a hand ball in the area…Bobby Madden gave nothing. Meanwhile in another match one of his fellow *rangers supporters in black calls a deliberate stamp a “tangle of legs”. We were never gonna be allowed to win the 10 but we have made it easy for them.
I don’t want to imagine the headlines, double-page colour spreads, Gerrard interviews, the media frenzy with their stories of the “Remarkable resurgence of Rangers”…”fighting back from unjust relegation”, 55 attained..etc etc etc
If you think we’re hurting today, it’s gonna get a whole lot worse and I already feel the nausea in the pit of my stomach. The Lisbon Lions and Jock are immortal for what they achieved…..this manager and team are in danger of being remembered as infamous and inept.

The shambles that is Lennon has been going on since he returned. The Scottish Cup Final was not a triumph, but he still got the job on the Brendas ashes. He then is clueless in Europe, time after time, Copenhagen, Cluj, Ferencvaros, Sarajevo, breakaways do Celtic. Against the zombies he is embarrassing, the Wall last year saved his bacon in the BetFred Cup. His total attitude/arrogance stinks, he blames anyone and everyone, but at no time takes responsibility. The majority of teams played in Scotland including the Wankers are journeymen, he makes them look good, yesterday his substitutions, the ramblings of a clown, his constant badmouthing of the team, classless, behind closed doors is where a good manager takes up his issues.
The Greeen pound is the mainstay of Celtic Football club, not the Wankiers, Wilson’s, Ferguson’s or Lawells, Desmond can fiddle as Rome burns but that was an unhappy ending. As of today I am switching off Scottish football till there are major changes in the thinking. The new CEO seems to be the same old, same old.

I don’t think he does Jimmy. He’s at it. I think of Big Billy and Tommy getting sacked, they were everything that epitomised what Celtic were and should be, but this guy couldn’t hold a candle to them. If he and the powers that be don’t understand the damage he’s doing, or indeed he’s simply holding out for his entitled payout, then shame on all of them for letting this tear the club apart. These chancers are hiding behind Covid , this situation would never be allowed to fester if the fans were able to attend matches.

Alex Dyer has resigned as Killie manager.

Gary Holt at Livingston and Stephen Robinson at Motherwell resigned earlier in the season.

Stuart Kettlewell was sacked at Ross County.

None of these were legends at their clubs but the first 3 decided it was best for their clubs and Ross County decided for the latter.

Relative to size and expectations none of these clubs were in as bad a state as we are.

Lennon is sticking around for his own selfish interests and knows that he’s doing damage to the club every day he remains.

That’s not the actions of a club legend, so lets hear no more talk of that in relation to him.

With respect, the guy’s you mention above, will be on a pittance compared to Lennon. It’s been said that Lennon is on £300,000 thousand p.a. They would probably be on something like £75,000 p.a. Lennon will probably not get another managerial job as big as the Celtic one. Its been well documented that Lawwell and Lennon are very close. It’s Lawwell that gets paid to make the decisions not Lennon, it’s up to Lawwell to sack Lennon. Lennon sounds as if he is on a course of deludamol and he will cling on until Lawwell or Desmond takes the decision out of his hands. I thought that second place would be a probable, now I have changed my opinion. If we do not get the opportunity to get into next seasons CL qualifiers, that will have a bearing on any manager and player, that want’s to come to Celtic. It seems to me that they had hoped to wait until the summer before appointing a new manager, making a complete clear out, but circumstances are now changing after each and every game.

According to various sources Lennon earns £2.4M per annum. £100k less than Slippy. If that is the case then is it any wonder he’s giving us the single digit. It should also be the end for anyone who sanctioned that obscene amount for a guy that was out of work and with limited abilities. Just noticed McInnes supposedly earns £750,000 per annum………….wow. I read that too, but could not believe it. I think if you base it on the average player salary plus 25% it would be more credible, so, £1,125, 000. pa. The £300.000 was when both he and Lawwell took substantial pay cuts because of Covid, as reported by the BBC. The AGM report does not show individual salaries, except the directors remuneration, everybody else’s just speculation.
A £59.00 Mill. cost of the whole fitbaw department (huge) was more than the whole Romanian League 1. And yet Clug, anyway that you look at it, there’s SFA value for money, just a squandering sinkhole…

“Frankly, it gives the impression that no one at the club gives a toss” – for me this line sums everything up. No one, not the owners, the technical staff, the manager, the players – none of them seem particularly bothered by this astonishing and humiliating decline. Have they no shame? Have they no self respect or pride? It seems not. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so low about Celtic. The first game I ever watched was a pre-season friendly against Liverpool in 1974. I was ten years old and my uncle lifted me over the turnstiles. In a way I’m glad my old uncle is long dead and didn’t live to see this shambles. It’s heartbreaking. It’s not the losing (all teams lose at one time or another), it’s the not seeming to give a toss that really hurts.

Didn’t know about the year contract pay-off guarantee; that’s even more confusing as to why Lennon hasn’t walked (if he doesn’t need to hang on for a pay-off). Unless he gets severance pay too when he’s sacked. Either way, it’s up to the board to relieve him and like others, I’m guessing they haven’t a scooby who would take over right now, even with some of the names being mentioned!

The new CEO will not thank the current board if they leave him a dogs mess to pick up in terms of appointing people etc. Lawwell, Bankier, Desmond et al should be on the phone to MacKay, running the options of a new manager past him, set up a Zoom interview with MacKay leading it, appoint whoever we appoint, Howe, Raganick, Bobby Davro for all we know but I don’t think a new mgr will come in for another couple of months, in order to set up their own coaches, contracts, get a house for the family, etc etc, etc. So bring in someone solid who doesn’t want the gig long term but fancies a couple of months being paid lucratively to cajole our misfiring Hoops into some sort of tactical mindframe. Literally, go get I dunno, Riykard or pay £1Million to Sacchi to come over and manage us for 2 months until the new manager is installed. Having sold Frimpong, I’d happily see a mill of that go to a top coach to reinstall some self respect in our duds!

Lennon…..I mean seriously, what is he being told by the board? That he’s safe for now? Are they speaking to him? Just put the guy out his misery, make the decision for him, painting of a spitfire, Bully’s special prize and a new coat for the wife. Done. Sacchi in, win some games. Done. New manager smoothly enters around Easter time with plans already in place for recruitment, who’s being horsed out the door, new coaching set up.

It’s not rocket science is it? How can we all come up with these ideas and suggestions but the board offer none? If they really are arrogant enough to ignore logic, common sense and the fanbase, the only option is hold off on renewals until money really talks

Grabbing the jersey of an opponent in the middle of the park results in a free kick……in most leagues around the world.

Monti I didn’t want to mention it as we were piss poor but there was some decisions that was cheating.
We shoukd gave had a foul and I think it was in the lead up to the livi goal. Ellynoussi was clearly fouled but play on, A corner should have been given when Duffy header was saved near the end. Edouard fouled not given, Ellynoussi fouled nit given lots of little decisions in their half of the pitch which shoukd gave went punished nit given.
Cheatin bastards but we were mince

I’m at a loss to understand what’s happening, it’s making me dizzy. I’m sixty-eight years old now and have seen some awful stuff, but can’t get my head around what I watched yesterday. Some of these players ought to hang their heads in shame. They have the privilege of wearing the green and white hoops but they are a disgrace to the jersey. Just where do we go from here? Is it acceptable to be also-rans, it looks like it. The collapse in morale, don’t forget it could get much worse, is totally unacceptable to the support. The only saving grace for the whole club is the absence of the people who matter, us. We cannot let this go on any longer. Change must happen NOW.

Why the fvck are we trying to bring players in? Lennon and Lawwell should not be in situ making decisions of any sort. This is getting more bizarre by the hour.

It’s all part of the grand Old Firm plan, Henke.

That’s as plain as day now cos billionaires don’t become billionaires by letting their companies go on like this.

I’ve heard rumors that he’s staying and has been allowed to do so because everyone has realized that John Kennedy has been a major contributing problem with the last 3 managers “leaving” and they don’t want him as caretaker.

Get any players that don’t want to play for Celtic out the door, why should Celtic supporters pay for the wages of those that do not want to play for us. Lennon should be out the door as well, but I suspect that he is going to stay till the summer, leaving hand in hand with Lawwell. Bring in loan players to make up for those that leave, its time for a bit of passion, skill and physique. The sleekits are having a field day, going under the radar and escaping critisism for their sleekit behaviour. Like Sargent Shultz, they know nothing, they see nothing, ironic that now of all times Morelos gets a ban, when it means SFA. The Scottish game will always be bent, bent in favour of the cheating Huns, aided by this Celtic board. The main protaganists are falling by the wayside one by one, Regan – Lawwell – Riley – Bryson et all. But there is still some to go, like Petrie and Doncaster and the rest of the chairmen who facilitated the 5Way. Scottish football needs to be cleansed.

Where’s the review that was promised? Fvckin rats the lot of them. Absolute mugs they take us for and I will not be back or spend another penny on anything associated with the ‘brand’ as they like to call it, while Desmond and the rest of those cvnts preside over Celtic Park. As for players chucking it, I don’t see it entirely that way. Yeh, some might look at what they’re paying Duffy and say fvck this for a game of soldiers, first team players getting £7/8k a week and that have performed consistently over a sustained period, must think to themselves, what a fvckin slap in the chops. If your going to bring a high earner in, he’d better dam well have the attributes and abilities for these guys to look up to and think to themselves, yeh, that’s the level I need to get to. Duffy, ffs, they’ll be looking at him and thinking £40k a week…….what!!! He’s shite. Lemon is the disaster that was predicted, he is an embarrassment and he should be long gone.

The review will be like the review into Torbin and his Pedo pals, somewhere over the rainbow. Make no mistake, it will be extremely hard to give up paying into the club and why should you give up on the club that you have bought into so for so long? its them that should be the ones to go, not you. I stopped my season ticket in 2019, Res.12 – 5Way put a stop to that, I had given up Sky years before. It has been really difficult to do so and I have a feeling that there will be many, many like us before this season has stopped. While the 10 was hugely significant, its the knowing that you are watching a bent game, that has done for me. Scottish football’s governing bodies and, this Celtic board who have destroyed the clubs ethos and raison d’etre. Imagine being remembered for that? what a legacy to leave.

As I spoke with you before Mike, the 10 was no biggy, though lovely to achieve,
That one day in May 1967 means more to me than every other title put together.
In fact, if offered the choice of Lisbon and the other 110 titles, give me Lisbon every day of the week.

Celtic FC……..Champions of Europe 1967.

…… and although not foremost in my thoughts when I think of Lisbon, it’ll always give me a warm glow to think that Sevco are a product of that very day.

My favourite picture. That team, that manager will live forever in our hearts and souls, for me, they set the bar for all others to follow. Big Jock and his players still managed to achieve the highest honours despite the ruling families. What we are watching just now is nothing compared to them, a fraud, they darken their memories. You are correct, that what the Lions achieved, they destroyed the Huns, that is a fact bourn out by Murrays ego and largess in trying to match their achievements. Thank’s for posting it, made my morning.
