Celtic Diary Friday October 23: What Now ?

Celtic improved hugely last night…oh, stop it.

We were bloody awful again.

Milan took a 2-0 lead and then spent a while wondering what the ground would look like with people in it.

Celtic sort of looked a bit hungrier but only because the Italian side left some food unattended at the table.

The game against Aberdeen on Sunday now takes on an enormous significance, but very little will change unless the manager finds out what is wrong.

And there could be any number of things on their own, or everything coming together in one big tsunami that threatens to drown any ambitions of ten in a row.

In any normal season clam heads would prevail, it’s still only October and there’s plenty of time to sort things out, but with the clubs already discussing what to do in the event the league is cancelled or postponed, our own club needs to be prepared for any situation.

Everyone has his own ideas about problems and solutions but most of it is knee jerk and overly critical.

There is an awful lot of bullshit doing the rounds, which may actually be the product of fertile imaginations, but may also have a little bit of a bearing in truth.

For example…

Image

Let’s be honest, it probably didn’t happen like that. It seems like someone has taken a lot of rumours and written a synopsis for a comedy sketch, yet there is little doubt Lennon is under pressure, and as for a dressing room split, there are whispers about loan players being paid an awful lot more than regulars without actually bringing anything to the table.

Players that cannot get a game for sub standard EPL sides turning up and expecting to be part of a historic achievement may well have realised that it’s not as easy in Scotland as they thought it might be.

Shane Duffy added Vassilis Barkas to his list of victims last night, and with Chris Jullien unlikely to be back any time soon after the Irishmans intervention it seems our new hero has caused more damage to Celtic than any defender since the unfortunate Willie Garner all those years ago.

But hey, he’s Irish and a fan, so let’s blame that poor sod of a goalkeeper who hasn’t played behind the same defence two games in a row since he got here.

And at least he committed himself for a few years, not a few months.

Then there’s Ajeti, who finds it easy enough to score domestically, often joining a game when the defenders are tired, but struggles against better opposition. Again, only a loannee , like his international comrade Mo Elyannoussi, who runs with his head down and manages to lift it in time only in tandem with the ball which he usually lifts over the bar.

These three have failed to impress, and are included ahead of others such as Klimala, Soro, Turnbull and of course, Griffiths.

Though Griffiths did start last night, but was exhausted after running out to take his position at the start.

And Griffiths starting shows just how much the manager has lost it. Maybe he’d got him ixed up with anthony Stokes, who single handedly saved him his job a few seasons ago.

The transfer window, roundly hailed as one of the best in recent years , is proving to be a disaster.

Only Uruguayan Davie Hay Diego Laxalt looks anything like the real deal, and he’s more of a forward than a defender, which is where the problems lie.

Look at this, the defensive “wall ” before Milan’s first goal…

Image

Was only ever going to end up one way….

Image

Complete shambles.

Don’t be fooled by the second half performance, Milan could have scored at will last night.

If the dressing room is indeed a little disjointed, then what of the management team itself, seen here, well, I’m at a loss to see what they are doing….

Image

Is he taking orders for the half time carry out ?

The look on their faces and their body language suggest they are not focused on the pitch, which is where the action is. Action in the loosest possible sense of the word.

One of the biggest changes in football over recent seasons is the reliance on data, on models and projections, when in fact that might be useful when picking a team for a computer game, it’s only a guidance for the real thing, for instance if you want to know how tall a player is so you can order the correct size jersey.

Data is retrospective, and as football has so many variations on play, it’s bloody useless when planning a match, as when things don’t go to plan, the damage is often done because it’s too late to change.

Sitting trackside with a laptop serves no purpose whatsoever, as it distracts from anything thats going on in the real world.

Pencil, paper and a voice are all thats needed, and the pencil and paper is only in case you need to mention something at half time.

Since the arrival of Strachan, the team has not functioned.

There’s an obvious solution to that issue.

Since the introduction of several loannees, a system which failed under Tony Mowbray, the tam has not functioned.

There’s an obvious solution to that one as well.

As for the shape and formation, it’s not working.

There’s an obvious solution to that, and a pattern emerging….

Several players have been affected by the Covid virus, Edouard and Biton apparently have had it bad.

Along with Forrest and probably Julien we can forget seeing them at anything like their best …if at all…this side of Christmas.

We’re in trouble, a lot more trouble than we think, and it can be fixed, but it’s going to have to be now, and it’s going to have to be decisive.

At the moment we’re still at the angry stage, when the gallows humour kicks in, then we’ve lost it…

I think it was around 70 minutes before I realised John Kennedy was even there last night. Is he out in the technical area giving instructions, if not, who the hell is rather than sitting on their arses watching the wheels wobble round and round.

We picked up, albeit when Milan were in cruise mode. Brown off helped Ajer and Ntcham move with the ball whilst keeping Duffy the Caravan towing Football Carthorse far away from the ball as possible. The key was Christie running with the ball and moving for the return. Rogic calmness under pressure is something for Mo and Ajeti to emulate but there were some small glimmers that we can get it right, dig, determination and drive are needed at Pittodrie…not a slow sideways 3-5-2…play that and most Celtic fans will decide enough is finally enough.

I mean i’m not a rocket scientist but if the ball is coming into your box, you just position yourself so you can get to it first in order to head or kick it as far away drom your

In the half a dozen games we played 3-5-2 before the suspension of the league, how difficult was it for other teams to suss it out and evolve their game plan when facing us. We have been wide open and very poor in a fair few games this season, gifting chances galore and that includes when we had more or less a full compliment of mainly expensive acquisitions available. Last season after the winter break 3-5-2 was implemented against the might of Kilmarnock, St Johnstone, Hamilton, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Livingstone with the exclusion of the Copenhagen game (4-2-3-1) Your theory that it will be alright on the night with players coming back doesnโ€™t wash. Just another deflection from the inadequacies of the manager.

Exactly, was thinking that earlier, play the same system every game then the opposition teams know how to set up against you. Add into the mix opposition teams finding out what players you are playing (mole) then the opposition knows who to pick to play against them. Unless you vary your system and tactics then you are stacking the odds up against you.

Exactly Mike. Play to the strengths of the players you have available from the off and try not to play catch up after the horse has bolted.

The geniuses that want Lennon out ,also thought Ajer should be dropped and we should play 3 5 2. Now Ajer is by far our best defender , 3 5 2 is certainly not our best formation and at this moment we are missing 3 centre defenders , so our defence will be under pressure until we get a couple back . At the other end of the field we are missing our most creative player Forrest & the best player in Scotland Eddie . N L and club havenโ€™t to look far from difficulties & getting rid of NL wonโ€™t clear these problems.

I canโ€™t recall anyone on here wanting Ajer out. That boy has a big future and is one of our prized assets. You really have to stop and wonder why so many players seem to want to move on. Could it be down to the manager? Just saying.

There is nothing wrong with 3-5-2 if you have natural players in their natural positions.
I doubt if we will see 3-5-2 again this season.
The team looked more like themselves when they went to a back four.
Surely you could see that on your live stream?

I hate to say “I told you all so” but, prior to the new huns game I suggested a 4-4-2, and I still think it would’ve done them. NFL chose seriously differently, I went Oh! FFS, not again and we all know what came next. NFL’s now proven he’s not up to managing our club. JK has had years and years to sort out a central defence and we’ve not had a decent one since VVD and Jason. I’ll repeat (if my earlier comment ever sees daylight),
get NFL, JK and GS tae fukk and immediately replace them with 3 proper Tims, Myself, Ralph, and Monti. For, er, em ‘technical’ reasons only Monti’ll have his boots ready. :–)
THEN WE’LL GET THE TEN. This will NOT include any form of leniency towards PTL. He owes us, BIG STYLE. Me? I require that he pays.

The Coronavirus: Infections, Care Homes for the elderly, Lockdown, Track @ Trace, Deaths.
And if that does’nt affect your mental health suffer then what does? Answer…
Stuttering Celtic. Just when you need your club to lift your spirits, the team starts to stutter and adds to your mental health tribulations. I wonder how big Fraser Foster is getting on, warming the bench at Southampton, does he regret his decision to turn his back on Celtic after being promised ‘a chance’ to take the goalkeepers place from Hasenhuttle? At Celtic he did us proud and he did look and sound happy. He had the continuity of 39 Steps in goal, twice as much as he had in two seasons at Southampton. He made his choice, but….
All this doom and gloom, common Desi-mond, my challenge to you is to provide us with one of your uplifting articles, give us a funny, something to make us smile….go on, your audience awaits.

Ralph you are quick to blame quite a few players for the turmoil thatโ€™s going on inside Lennoxtown, but exempt any blame towards Lennon who after all along with his coaches pick and say what tactics the players have to play to,and Big Duffy isnโ€™t the answer to the defence far to slow,on other blogs I have been saying Jozo Suminovic still hasnโ€™t found a club,Celtic should contact him and see if he could come back on loan ,for all he is injury prone he is miles better than Duffy.

Good points but if Milan ( or Saturday) could have ‘scored at will’ they would have. Anybody would.
These are professional footballers here, many who have played at International level and understand the basics of organising themselves. Here is the formation now go out and play it. Have we reached the point where the players are actively disobeying the manager and/or coaches to prove a point ?

Cartvale88

Again starts with 3-5-2 Ajeti and Griffs upfront neither fit. Ncham and Brown cannot play together, Brown is now running on empty. As for the defence, Welsh did his best, Duffy is so slow, he turns like an oil tanker, Ajer reasonable, still believe with his runs would be better in midfield or upfront. Laxalt shockingly our best player, says it all.
There appear to be serious problems in the dressing room, Lenny and his merry men appear to have lost it.
One of the first Euro games that I turned over to look at the other games, Celtic are nothing without the fans, Lawell and Hammond are to blame for this pathetic team.

Listen, regardless of all the variables that surround this situation, the fact that the huns have had back to back wins against us,especially with that last performance was the final wake up call and sackable offence for the manager, there has to be a manager and his team who can walk into this situation, see the huns for what they are and get the best squad in the league back on top again, that is the job of the board and its time they earned their money again.

l never cease to be amazed as how any Celtic supporter can talk about back to back H.ns wins against us when these victories took place in different years 9/10 months apart . Itโ€™s the type of comment I would expect from a low life Rangers2012 fan. We really need to grow up & realise as Celtic supporters we need to encourage & support our club , our manager & our players . It isnโ€™t easy to go out on to Celtic Pk & instead of 55,000 Celtic supporting & maybe 1,000 abusing & ridiculing our players ,there is almost stony silence

Well, Iancelt67 did say the Milan game was not a priority and I stand by that. I am still trying to see what Elyannoussi brings to the table. His touch has the subtlety of a barn horse. Watching Duffy, I know now why Ireland will not be European Nations winners this year. He simply must realise he is not playing for Ireland or Brighton when he pulls on the Hoops. And football is a team game, though Callum Mac was doing too much when they got in each others way for the second. On top of playing goldson onside. He simply must do extra training with the defence and work out his role at the back and have some confidence, which seems remarkably low right now. Barkas simply does not ever get to those shots no keeper has a right to get to. Forster and Craig did. He just simply cannot get to those shots that need you to stretch except for picking tham out of the back of the net. For goodness sake Lenny, put Bain back in until Barkas is more settled into Scotland, a spell on the bench and watching and learning may bring him on. Are the ‘Do Not Use’ stickers a reminder from Lewwell who to pick? Strachen is clueless and looking up to Lenny the same way Barnes did to King Kenny when the players sussed him out. Is The Wiz of Aus our saviour? Is Mikey nearly fit? Far better than Elyannoussi. Where does Turnball fit in the scheme of things? Green Brigade, does Laxalt have a song yet? A real challange with his name, but if he keeps this up, he might just need one! Roll on Sunday and the Dons, and roll on November. We are being laughed at, so now is the time to raise it. Finally bought the Hoops Adidas no ads or logo on the Celtic website, please Lenny it will be with me in a few days. Give the Bhoys back their swagger, or I will be using it to dry up my tears! Long way to go yet, we need a boost! HH!

There was signs in the second half that Celtic had found it’s fighting spirit, i don’t buy all this it was because Milan took their foot off the gas plsh.
We started to play better because OUR players were working harder to play better, let’s give our players some credit.
We lost a goal at the end with Duffy again looking to be on the wrong side of his man, Duffy hasn’t looked the part at Celtic & we need to go to a four & forget the three.
Ajeti is a goalscorer & we need this guy in & around the box, not out wide chasing wing backs, we need to provide the ammo for him, this should be assigned to Rogic.

When all is said & done Pittodrie is a must win, if we lose then Lennon has to go!
Peronally i think Celtic will win in style!

Tend to agree with Monti about most points, first time ever I promise. I thought Duffy would be brilliant alongside Julien, didnโ€™t anticipate the injury or how badly Duffy has played. We all know a result against Aberdeen will buy time but only that. Havenโ€™t heard any names of an alternative to Neil Lennon. Every organisation has an At Risk Register, losing the manager for a football club is probably the number one risk. Lawwell must have an alternative, it might change monthly depending on availability but he must have one. As for those who know what is going on in the dressing room or can tell from a picture what is going on in someoneโ€™s mind, ignore them as clueless.Let us focus on Sunday.

Mike

Looking at the manager recently he seems just to sit there looking disinterested, I compared his body language to the AC. Milan manager who strode along the line giving his instructions when he felt they were needed. No sign of that in our camp, never tweaking his tactics, which only changed at half time. No sign of the old passionate Lenny. Supporters for one watch the manager just as closely as they watch the players, looking to him for guidance and support. The great managers are great tacticions, they can change tactics during game time, they know how to construct a team, difficult if someone else is bringing in the players, especially difficult if those players don’t fit into the managers system, even more difficult if someone else ‘picks’ his assistant. The buck stops with the manager, but who is really to blame?
Fragile last night, in Europe we always seem to be fragile and cannot cope and with zero confidence, it was mostly thus. How to change that? it starts much higher up in the food chain, until that changes, nothing changes.

The manager has to go.
It really is that simple.
We are going nowhere fast.
Is someone looking for sevco to go into administration no chance of it happening.
The more success they generate at home and abroad the more the coffers will come from investment.
We have allowed the dead to rise from the grave.
The writing was on the wall with the friendlys in France Sevco defeated all that we couldn’t. It had shown they were ahead of us for the first time in their short existence.
The scouting network is a joke and the appointment of lennon to continue a disaster.
We are second best accept it and do something about it before its too late.
Stop kidding yourselves on and having blind faith in a manager who has served us well and with distinction, answered the call but like Big Jock Tommy Burns ,David Hay, no one is bigger than the club.
His time is over

A couple of things no one is talking about the penalty we shouldโ€™ve had arm extended and by the new rule itโ€™s a penalty. And Duffy he nearly gifted them another goal with a comical back header across the goal. He canโ€™t jump โ€œ Irish guys canโ€™t jumpโ€ starring big Jim from the bogs. The current Brighton manager has a football brain and if we are to get anything out of Duffy itโ€™s with extra โ€œ haunersโ€ ie a back four. He has strengths but no commanding presence his huge frame should warrant. Julienne is the man when he gets back. He has skill and vision. Ajer was really good last night as was Laxalt. Frimpong 5/10 because of wayward passes in dangerous areas. So Aberdeen. Itโ€™s looking 50/50 this one. You wouldnโ€™t have said that in the last 5 years. We have been a bit spoilt.
